The Preservation of Sign Language by George W. Veditz
-
0:18 - 0:24Friends and fellow deaf-mutes:
-
0:28 - 0:36The French deaf people loved de l'Epee.
-
0:36 - 0:43Every year on the occasion of his birthday
-
0:43 - 0:52they gather together at banquets and festivities
-
0:52 - 1:01to show their appreciation that this man was born on this earth.
-
1:01 - 1:13They journey to his gravesight in Versailles
-
1:14 - 1:19and place flowers and green wreaths on his grave
-
1:19 - 1:27to show their respect for his memory.
-
1:27 - 1:38They loved him because he was their first teacher.
-
1:38 - 1:41But they loved him more
-
1:41 - 1:49for being the father and inventor
-
1:49 - 1:54of their beautiful sign language.
-
1:54 - 2:05For the last 33 years, the French Deaf people have watched
-
2:05 - 2:11with eyes full of tears and hearts broken
-
2:11 - 2:22as they have watched this beautiful sign language snatched away from their schools
-
2:22 - 2:35For the past 33 years they have fought for the restitution of sign.
-
2:35 - 2:58Their teachers have cast them aside and refused to listen to their pleas.
-
2:58 - 3:01But their teachers would much rather listen to the worthless
-
3:01 - 3:05and cruel-hearted demands of people
-
3:05 - 3:11that think they know all about educating the Deaf!
-
3:11 - 3:18But they know nothing about their thoughts and their souls.
-
3:18 - 3:24They know nothing about their feelings, desires and needs.
-
3:24 - 3:34It is like this in Germany also, as Deaf Germans and Deaf French people look to us American Deaf
-
3:34 - 3:40with the eyes of jealousy. They look upon us Americans
-
3:40 - 3:52as a jailed-man might look upon a free man able to wander around at will.
-
3:52 - 4:12They freely admit that the American Deaf people are superior to them in matters of intelligence and spirituality.
-
4:12 - 4:26They freely admit that this superiority can be credited to one thing.
-
4:26 - 4:33It is the allowance of our use of American Sign Language in our schools.
-
4:33 - 4:45The French Deaf People base their inferiority on one thing.
-
4:45 - 4:49It is the fact that oralism (the use of verbal communication only)
-
4:49 - 4:54must be taught in their schools! They have eliminated fingerspelling,
-
4:54 - 4:58They have eliminated signs as well.
-
4:58 - 5:13But we American Deaf are rapidly approaching some bad times in our own schools.
-
5:13 - 5:22False prophets are now appearing
-
5:22 - 5:36They say that our means of teaching Deaf children are all wrong.
-
5:36 - 5:54These men have tried to educate and make people believe that the oral method is best.
-
5:54 - 6:08But we American Deaf people,German Deaf people and French Deaf know the truth.
-
6:08 - 6:14The truth is that the oral method is the worst.
-
6:14 - 6:25Our beautiful sign language is beginning
-
6:25 - 6:29to show the attempts of their efforts.
-
6:29 - 6:33They have tried to banish sign language from our
-
6:33 - 6:41schools, from our Churches and from the earth.
-
6:41 - 6:47Yes, they have tried and so our sign language is deteriorating.
-
6:47 - 6:56From the olden years, our masters of this sign language,
-
6:56 - 7:10the Peets, the Dudleys, the Elys and the Ballards
-
7:10 - 7:16are rapidly disappearing!
-
7:16 - 7:25We, in past years, loved these men.
-
7:25 - 7:34They had a precise command of sign language.
-
7:34 - 7:38They could communicate to us using only signs and
-
7:41 - 7:46we could understand them. But fortunately
-
7:46 - 7:54we have several beloved users of sign language still with us.
-
7:54 - 8:15Edward Miner Gallaudet who learned this sign language from his father, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet.
-
8:15 - 8:21There are also others who are
-
8:21 - 8:41still with us Dr. Hotchkiss, Dr. Edward Alan Fay and Robert McGregor.
-
8:41 - 8:52They will help preserve these signs as these men now use it.
-
8:52 - 9:01This will continue its' passing on from generation to generations to come.
-
9:01 - 9:17As many men have learned this sign language
-
9:17 - 9:25we must preserve our precious sign language.
-
9:25 - 9:37There is one known way to insure this. It is through motion picture films.
-
9:37 - 9:45Yes, the use of moving picture films. Our National
-
9:45 - 9:59Association of the Deaf has raised a fund of $5000 for this purpose.
-
9:59 - 10:17We have films of Edward Miner Gallaudet, j. Hotchkisss, and McGregor.
-
10:17 - 10:38I regret that we do not have $20,000 for we might have used it all.
-
10:38 - 10:44If we had this amount of money we could have
-
10:44 - 10:51performances in sign language, we could have
-
10:51 - 11:01sermons in sign language, and lectures as well.
-
11:01 - 11:11Not only would we American Deaf people enjoy
-
11:11 - 11:19the benefits of this, but also German Deaf,
-
11:19 - 11:26English Deaf people, and Italian as well. They would
-
11:26 - 11:39also view the moving pictures. Fifty years from now, these films will be priceless.
-
11:39 - 12:06"A new race of Pharaohs that knew not Joseph"
-
12:06 - 12:15are taking over the land and many of our schools.
-
12:15 - 12:22They do not understand signs
-
12:22 - 12:27because they cannot sign.
-
12:27 - 12:35They proclaim that signs are worthless
-
12:35 - 12:44and of no help to the Deaf. They are enemies
-
12:44 - 13:04of sign language and enemies of true welfare of the Deaf.
-
13:04 - 13:27As long as we have Deaf people on earth, we
-
13:27 - 13:42will have signs. It is my hope
-
13:42 - 13:57that we will love and guard our beautiful sign language
-
13:57 - 14:12as the noblest gift God has given to
-
14:12 - 14:18Deaf people on earth. We can preserve our
-
14:18 - 14:38beautiful language. As we cherish and protect this noble gift
