The electrifying speeches of Sojourner Truth - Daina Ramey Berry
-
0:07 - 0:12In early 1828, Sojourner Truth approached
the Grand Jury of Kingston, New York. -
0:12 - 0:15She had no experience
with the legal system, -
0:15 - 0:18no money, and no power
in the eyes of the court. -
0:18 - 0:20Ignoring the jury’s scorn,
-
0:20 - 0:24Truth said she was there to fight for
custody of her five-year-old son Peter, -
0:24 - 0:27who’d been illegally sold
to an enslaver in Alabama. -
0:27 - 0:30As the trial played out
over the next several months, -
0:30 - 0:33Truth raised funds,
strategized with lawyers, -
0:33 - 0:35and held her faith.
-
0:35 - 0:40Finally in the spring of 1828,
Peter was returned to her care— -
0:40 - 0:43but Truth’s work was far from over.
-
0:43 - 0:46She would dedicate
the rest of her life to pursuing justice -
0:46 - 0:48and spiritual understanding.
-
0:48 - 0:51Truth was born into slavery
as Isabella Baumfree -
0:51 - 0:54in the late 18th century
in Ulster County, New York. -
0:54 - 0:58Although New York state had announced
the abolition of slavery in 1799, -
0:58 - 1:01the emancipation act was gradual.
-
1:01 - 1:03Those who were currently enslaved
-
1:03 - 1:07were forced to serve a period of
indentured servitude until their mid-20s. -
1:07 - 1:11Throughout this period,
enslavers repeatedly sold Baumfree, -
1:11 - 1:13tearing her from her loved ones.
-
1:13 - 1:17Often, she was explicitly prevented
from pursuing new relationships. -
1:17 - 1:21Eventually, she married an enslaved man
named Thomas, -
1:21 - 1:23with whom she had three children.
-
1:23 - 1:26She was desperate to keep
her new family together— -
1:26 - 1:29but the slow progress of abolition
threatened this hope. -
1:29 - 1:35Baumfree’s enslaver, John Dumont,
had promised to free her by 1826. -
1:35 - 1:39When he failed to keep his word,
Baumfree fled for her safety. -
1:39 - 1:44During the escape, she was only able
to rescue her youngest daughter Sophia, -
1:44 - 1:46while her other children
remained in bondage. -
1:46 - 1:50It would be two years before
she regained custody of Peter. -
1:50 - 1:53After that, she would wait
another two years -
1:53 - 1:56before she saw any of her other children.
-
1:56 - 1:59During this time,
Baumfree found solace in her faith -
1:59 - 2:02and became increasingly dedicated
to religious reflection. -
2:02 - 2:04After settling in Kingston, New York,
-
2:04 - 2:08she joined a Methodist community
that shared her political views. -
2:08 - 2:11She continued her practice of speaking
aloud to God in private, -
2:11 - 2:16and one night, her evening prayers
took on even more sacred significance. -
2:16 - 2:20Baumfree claimed to hear the voice
of God, telling her to leave Kingston, -
2:20 - 2:23and share her holy message with others.
-
2:23 - 2:25Though she never learned to read or write,
-
2:25 - 2:28Baumfree became known
as an electrifying orator, -
2:28 - 2:31whose speeches drew on
Biblical references, -
2:31 - 2:34spiritual ideals,
and her experience of slavery. -
2:34 - 2:39Her sermons denounced the oppression
of African Americans and women in general, -
2:39 - 2:43and became prominent in campaigns
for both abolition and women’s rights. -
2:43 - 2:47In 1843, she renamed herself
Sojourner Truth -
2:47 - 2:50and embarked on a legendary
speaking tour. -
2:50 - 2:53Truth saw her journey
as a mission from God. -
2:53 - 2:57Her faith often led her
to the nation’s most hostile regions, -
2:57 - 3:01where she spoke to bigoted audiences
as the only Black woman in the crowd. -
3:01 - 3:04Truth was confident God would protect her,
-
3:04 - 3:07but some crowds responded
to her bravery with violence. -
3:07 - 3:08During one of her sermons,
-
3:08 - 3:13a mob of white men threatened to set
fire to the tent where she was speaking. -
3:13 - 3:17In her memoir, Truth recalled steeling
herself to confront them: -
3:17 - 3:20“Have I not faith enough to go out
and quell that mob… -
3:20 - 3:22I felt as if I had three hearts!
-
3:22 - 3:26And that they were so large,
my body could hardly hold them!” -
3:26 - 3:32She placated the men with song and prayer,
until they had no desire to harm her. -
3:32 - 3:36Truth’s speeches impacted thousands of
people in communities across the nation, -
3:36 - 3:39but her activism went far beyond
public speaking. -
3:39 - 3:43During the Civil War, she became involved
with the Union Army, -
3:43 - 3:46recruiting soldiers and organizing
supplies for Black troops. -
3:46 - 3:51Her work was so well regarded that
she was invited to meet President Lincoln. -
3:51 - 3:54She took the occasion to argue
that all formerly enslaved people -
3:54 - 3:57should be granted land by the government.
-
3:57 - 4:00Truth continued to travel
and speak well into her 80s. -
4:00 - 4:05Until her death in 1883,
she remained an outspoken critic -
4:05 - 4:09who fought for her right to be heard
in a hostile world. -
4:09 - 4:13As Truth once said, “I feel safe even
in the midst of my enemies; -
4:13 - 4:17for the truth is powerful
and will prevail."
