-
Good evening,
-
and welcome to a new hair styling video.
-
Tonight I will show you a very iconic hairstyle
-
that was very popular in the 40s,
-
especially in the United States:
-
the Victory rolls.
-
This is a beautiful hairstyle
-
that looks simple but
-
that is not so easy to do.
-
I tried to do it on my own hair
-
when I was working on my 1948 video
-
but because of the length and the thinness
-
of my hair
-
it kept falling apart
-
every time I tried to roll a strand.
-
But here I have one of my doll heads
-
that has the perfect length
-
and type of hair for this.
-
This is a hairstyle that could be compared
-
to hair sculpture actually,
-
you will see why.
-
So let's have a look at what we will need:
-
So of course we're going to need brushes,
-
any brush would do.
-
At least one comb,
-
I've got a few there.
-
We are going to need
-
bobby pins and
-
ripple pins.
-
One elastic band.
-
A bit of hairspray and
-
something new,
-
we are going to make our own volume powder
-
for this hairstyle.
-
This is very simple, I'll show you how.
-
But first, let's prepare the hair,
-
I'm going to untangle and brush it
-
so we have the perfect base to start.
-
I'm going to use a comb first.
-
This one is great if we have
-
some knots.
-
Here we go.
-
Alright,
-
now let's start a bit higher.
-
Good, on this side...
-
That's good.
-
Now let's use a brush.
-
This one.
-
Alright, that looks good.
-
Alright, before we start making
-
the volume powder,
-
I'm going to part the hair
-
because we'll mainly need volume on the front.
-
So I'm going to part the hair here,
-
what we don't want is something
-
too symmetrical, it would look weird
-
and not really pretty so...
-
Here will be just fine.
-
Alright, and now I'm going to split the hair
-
just behind the ears
-
because we'll only use the front part
-
for the rolls.
-
Right here...
-
Good.
-
And the other side...
-
And I'm going to make a simple pony tail
-
at the back, just to keep it away
-
from the rest of the hair.
-
Alright.
-
And now we are going to add volume
-
with a powder.
-
So this is a recipe that I've found
-
on different websites,
-
including Loepsie's channel
-
who is a gem if you're interested
-
in historical hair styling.
-
I will link it down below.
-
For the powder we're going to need
-
arrow root or corn starch,
-
both are great.
-
Baking soda,
-
and a bit of cocoa powder
-
or cinnamon powder
-
if your hair is not blond or white.
-
And you can also add a few drops
-
of your favorite essential oil,
-
just be sure that you can apply it
-
directly on the skin.
-
Here I'm going to use...
-
Peppermint,
-
that will stimulate the blood flow
-
and the scalp.
-
Lavender would be a good choice as well
-
as it is very soothing.
-
So,
-
I'm going to blend
-
2 spoons of arrow root,
-
1 spoon of baking soda,
-
And a bit of cocoa powder
-
until I'm pleased with the color.
-
And now a few drops of peppermint,
-
maybe 4 or 5.
-
Alright.
-
Now I'm going to place this
-
in a little sprinkler.
-
Here we go.
-
This is a very good alternative
-
to dry shampoos as well.
-
And as you can see
-
it is very easy to make
-
and very affordable.
-
It's ready.
-
Alright and now I'm going
-
to sprinkle this powder
-
at the base of the hair.
-
And if you're doing this on real hair
-
you can massage the powder a bit.
-
Here we go.
-
Good,
-
on the other side...
-
Alright, and now to add even more volume
-
I'm going to tease these parts
-
strand by strand.
-
This is a technique I showed
-
in other videos
-
quite easy and very effective.
-
Good.
-
And on the other side...
-
And I'm going to smooth the outsides
-
with the brush.
-
Alright we now have plenty of volume
-
and we're going to start the rolls.
-
Let's start with this side.
-
I'm going to roll this part with my fingers.
-
Just like this.
-
And this is the step you might want to do
-
again and again until you're satisfied
-
with the shape of your roll.
-
For this you can use ripple pins
-
that I'm just going to put temporarily
-
just to make sure this is the shape I want.
-
And work on my hair funnel
-
and sculpt it until I'm satisfied with it.
-
This is where you want to use a bit
-
of hairspray as well.
-
Let's do it again.
-
Alright.
-
It looks a bit better.
-
And once you're happy with it
-
you can fix it with bobby pins.
-
Second one...
-
Right into my little hair funnel,
-
making sure we don't see it.
-
Alright, second one.
-
Let's roll the second one.
-
Around my fingers and...
-
I'm going to place it here.
-
It looks cute.
-
Again let's secure it with bobby pins.
-
And another one at the back of the roll.
-
Making adjustments...
-
And it's done.
-
As you can see it requires a bit of time
-
and patience,
-
but with a bit of training
-
you can achieve beautiful rolls.
-
I like this wavy movement.
-
This is quite interesting.
-
New we're going to take care of the back
-
it's going to be much easier.
-
There's no rule,
-
you can do whatever you'd like,
-
you can just let your hair down
-
and curl the end of it.
-
Or make a simple updo.
-
Here I'm going to make some kind
-
of rolled updo.
-
Here we go.
-
I'm taking one strand on each side
-
and I'm going to tie them together
-
with an elastic band.
-
And now I'm going to tuck the rest of the hair
-
into these strands, just behind.
-
Until I get a nice kind of crown.
-
So I'm going to tuck them strand by strand.
-
Just like this.
-
Again I'm going to use bobby pins to secure it.
-
Let's keep going.
-
Another bobby pin...
-
And last strand...
-
One last bobby pin...
-
Good.
-
That's very simple.
-
And now, a bit of hairspray again.
-
And we're done.
-
Very classy, isn't it?
-
Now I will arrange a few things here and there
-
to make sure there is no fly away.
-
Or at least not too many.
-
Thank you for watching and,
-
as always, I wish you a very good night.
