Writing Expressions 1

  • 0:00 - 0:04
What I want to do in this video is write the algebraic expressions
  • 0:04 - 0:08
that represent the same thing that these statements are saying.
  • 0:08 - 0:14
So this first statement, they say "The sum of -7 and the quantity 8 times x,"
  • 0:14 - 0:19
So the sum, the sum...so we're going to have an addition here...of -7...
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    of -7...
  • 0:22 - 0:24
...and the quantity 8 times x...
  • 0:25 - 0:29
...so the quantity 8 times x. Well that's just 8x...
  • 0:29 - 0:31
(So I can just write 8x over there)
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    So it is -7+8x,
  • 0:34 - 0:39
or you could view this as the sum of -7 and the quantity 8 times x.
  • 0:40 - 0:41
    Let's do the next one!
  • 0:41 - 0:44
Take the quantity -3 times x,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
so take the quantity -3 times x,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
and then add 1...and then add 1...
  • 0:52 - 0:57
So the quantity -3 times x, we can write that as -3x,
  • 0:57 - 0:59
and then we need to add 1 to that.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    So that's going to be plus...plus 1.
  • 1:03 - 1:08
Now this one: -6 plus...-6 plus...
  • 1:08 - 1:11
so we can write -6 plus something
  • 1:11 - 1:14
The product of -1 and x.
  • 1:14 - 1:19
So the product of -1 and x...that's just going to be -1x.
  • 1:19 - 1:23
-1x which is the same thing as -x.
  • 1:23 - 1:28
So we can write this as -6 plus -x, or we can just write this...
  • 1:28 - 1:30
this is the exact same thing as
  • 1:30 - 1:35
    -6-x.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    And we are done!
