What Are Thumbnail Sketches

  • 0:01 - 0:04
For this lesson, we're going to talk about
  • 0:04 - 0:05
    what are thumbnail sketches
  • 0:06 - 0:09
and why do artists use thumbnail sketches?
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    So, a thumbnail sketch.
  • 0:11 - 0:16
    So, thumbnail sketch.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    Thumbnail sketches are called thumbnail
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    sketches because they're usually small,
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    like a thumbnail.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
Probably not as small as a real thumbnail,
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    but you could actually try
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    to draw them that small.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
So usually, when you do a thumbnail sketch,
  • 0:29 - 0:30
you start by making a bunch
  • 0:31 - 0:35
of little boxes on your paper.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
And you try to keep the size of the box
  • 0:40 - 0:43
similar to the dimensions of your paper.
  • 0:43 - 0:44
So if you're going to be drawing
  • 0:44 - 0:45
on a rectangle piece of paper,
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    you would draw rectangle
  • 0:49 - 0:52
frames or rectangle boxes on your paper.
  • 0:54 - 0:59
And for this, we're going to do six.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
You can do a lot more than six,
  • 1:03 - 1:05
but we'll start with just six.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
And the way artists use these is they try
  • 1:07 - 1:09
to figure out what's a good composition.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
So, a composition is the way objects are
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    placed in your drawing or
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    your painting or your artwork.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
Our drawings are going to be
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    about objects that have form.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
So, I might have a few objects that I'm
  • 1:21 - 1:22
    going to rearrange in different
  • 1:23 - 1:25
positions to see which one I like.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
And I can also practice zooming in and
  • 1:28 - 1:30
looking at them close up or far away.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
So for this one, let's say I have
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    a round object,
  • 1:37 - 1:38
and then I have a cylinder,
  • 1:40 - 1:42
and I draw them just really quick
  • 1:42 - 1:45
and loose, just to give me an idea.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
And then I have a cardboard
  • 1:49 - 1:56
box of crayons, and I'm just drawing them.
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    So there's one composition,
  • 1:57 - 1:58
    and I could say, "Okay."
  • 1:58 - 2:01
I'm going to put number one in the corner
  • 2:02 - 2:03
so that I know that's number one.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
And then maybe I'm going to make a second
  • 2:05 - 2:07
one, and I'll put a number two there.
  • 2:07 - 2:07
    And then now I want
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    to change my composition.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
Maybe that wasn't exciting to me,
  • 2:11 - 2:12
and I want to try to do something
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    different, so I can move
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    something in my design,
  • 2:17 - 2:19
and then I can draw it over again
  • 2:19 - 2:23
and try to get a different drawing.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
So, this would be a different
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    position for my box.
  • 2:27 - 2:32
And this time my sphere, which is a ball,
  • 2:32 - 2:35
is going to be on top of that box,
  • 2:36 - 2:39
and the cylinder is next to it,
  • 2:39 - 2:42
but it's going off the paper.
  • 2:42 - 2:43
And so, now, I've got all
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    this empty space here.
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    Maybe I'm like, "Hmm... That's
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    not very interesting.
  • 2:46 - 2:49
I got this big empty space."
  • 2:49 - 2:50
I might not like that composition.
  • 2:50 - 2:52
So, I can keep doing that and changing
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    my objects around
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    for all the different thumbnails.
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    So, this one's here.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
I'm just going to keep doing a few more.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
Okay. So now, I've got my six different
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    thumbnail compositions,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
and I can look at them and decide
  • 3:43 - 3:45
which one do I think might be the best
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    setup for my final drawing.
  • 3:47 - 3:49
So, let's say, I go through all of these,
  • 3:49 - 3:50
and then I decide that number
  • 3:50 - 3:51
    five is my best one.
  • 3:52 - 3:53
    I can circle that one,
  • 3:54 - 3:55
and that's the one that I will use
  • 3:55 - 3:57
to redraw for my final drawing.
