Not Synced
Melati Wijsen: Bali ...
-
Not Synced
Island of Gods.
-
Not Synced
A green paradise ...
-
Not Synced
or, a paradise lost.
-
Not Synced
Bali ...
-
Not Synced
island of garbage.
-
Not Synced
Isabel Wijsen: In Bali,
-
Not Synced
we generate 680 cubic meters
of plastic garbage a day.
-
Not Synced
That's about a 14-story building.
-
Not Synced
And when it comes to plastic bags,
-
Not Synced
less than five percent gets recycled.
-
Not Synced
MW: We know that changes the image
you may have of our island.
-
Not Synced
It changed ours, too
when we learned about it.
-
Not Synced
When we learned that almost
all plastic bags in Bali
-
Not Synced
that almost all plastic bags in Bali
end up in our drains
-
Not Synced
and then in our rivers,
-
Not Synced
and then in our ocean.
-
Not Synced
And those that don't even
make it to the ocean,
-
Not Synced
they're either burned out littered.
-
Not Synced
IW: So we decided
to do something about it.
-
Not Synced
And we've been working
for almost three years now
-
Not Synced
to try to say no to plastic bags
on our home island,
-
Not Synced
and we have had
some significant successes.
-
Not Synced
MW: We are sisters
-
Not Synced
and we go to the best school on Earth.
-
Not Synced
Green School, Bali.
-
Not Synced
Green School is not only different
-
Not Synced
in the way that it is
built out of bamboo,
-
Not Synced
but also in the way that it teaches.
-
Not Synced
We are taught to become leaders of today.
-
Not Synced
Something a normal textbook cannot match.
-
Not Synced
IW: One day we had a lesson in class
-
Not Synced
where we learned about significant people,
-
Not Synced
like Nelson Mandela,
-
Not Synced
Lady Diana
-
Not Synced
and Mahatma Gandhi.
-
Not Synced
Walking home that day,
-
Not Synced
we agreed that we also
wanted to be significant.
-
Not Synced
Why should we wait until
we were grown up to be significant?
-
Not Synced
We wanted to do something now.
-
Not Synced
MW: Sitting on the sofa that night,
-
Not Synced
we brainstormed and thought
of all the issues facing Bali.
-
Not Synced
And the one thing
that stood out to us the most
-
Not Synced
was the plastic garbage.
-
Not Synced
But that is a huge problem.
-
Not Synced
So we looked into what was
a realistic target for us kids.
-
Not Synced
Plastic bags.
-
Not Synced
And the idea was born.
-
Not Synced
IW: We started researching ...
-
Not Synced
and let's just say,
-
Not Synced
the more we learnt there was
nothing good about plastic bags.
-
Not Synced
And you know what?
-
Not Synced
We don't even need them.
-
Not Synced
MW: We were really inspired
-
Not Synced
by the efforts to say no to plastic bags
in many other places.
-
Not Synced
From Hawaii to Rawanda,
-
Not Synced
and to severals cities
like Oakland and Dublin.
-
Not Synced
IW: And so the idea turned into the launch
of Bye Bye Plastic Bags.
-
Not Synced
MW: In the years that we
have been campaigning
-
Not Synced
we have learned a lot.
-
Not Synced
Lesson number one:
-
Not Synced
you cannot do it all by yourself.
-
Not Synced
You need a big team of like-minded kids,
-
Not Synced
and so we formed
the Bye Bye Plastic Bags crew.
-
Not Synced
The volunteer team includes children
from all over the island,
-
Not Synced
from both international and local schools.
-
Not Synced
And together with them,
-
Not Synced
we started a multi-layered approach
-
Not Synced
based on an on and offline
signature petition,
-
Not Synced
educational and inspirational
presentations at schools,
-
Not Synced
we raised general awareness
at markets, festivals, beach clean-ups,
-
Not Synced
and last but not least,
-
Not Synced
we distributed alternative bags.
-
Not Synced
Bags like net bags,
-
Not Synced
recycled newspaper bags,
-
Not Synced
or 100 percent organic material bags,
-
Not Synced
all made by local
initiatives on the island.
-
Not Synced
IW: We run a pilot village,
-
Not Synced
home of 800 families.
-
Not Synced
The village mayor was our first friend
-
Not Synced
and he loved our T-shirt,
-
Not Synced
so that helped.
-
Not Synced
We focused on making the customers aware
-
Not Synced
because that's where
the change needs to happen.
-
Not Synced
The village is already
two-thirds along the way
-
Not Synced
of becoming plastic bag-free.
-
Not Synced
Our first attempts to get
the government of Bali on board failed.
-
Not Synced
So we thought,
-
Not Synced
"Hm ... a petition
with one million signatures,
-
Not Synced
they can't ignore us," right?
-
Not Synced
MW: Right.
-
Not Synced
IW: But who would have guessed
-
Not Synced
one million signatures is like
a thousand times a thousand?
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
We got stuck ...
-
Not Synced
until we learned lesson number two.
-
Not Synced
Think outside the box.
-
Not Synced
Someone mentioned that the Bali airport
-
Not Synced
handles 16 million arrivals
and departures a year.
-
Not Synced
MW: But how do we get into the airport?
-
Not Synced
And here comes lesson number three.
-
Not Synced
Persistence.
-
Not Synced
Off we headed to the airport.
-
Not Synced
We got past the janitor.
-
Not Synced
And then it was his boss' boss,
-
Not Synced
and then the assistant office manager,
-
Not Synced
and then the office manager,
-
Not Synced
and then ...
-
Not Synced
we got shuffled down
two levels and thought,
-
Not Synced
well ... here comes the janitor again.
-
Not Synced
And after several days
of knocking on doors
-
Not Synced
and just being kids on a mission,
-
Not Synced
we finally got to the commercial
manager of Bali airports.
-
Not Synced
And we gave him
the [bio?] plastic bags speech
-
Not Synced
and being a very nice man he said,
-
Not Synced
"I cannot believe what I'm about say,
-
Not Synced
but I'm going to give authorization
-
Not Synced
to collect signatures
behind customs and immigrations."
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
IW: In our first hour and a half there,
-
Not Synced
we got almost 1,000 signatures.
-
Not Synced
How cool is that?
-
Not Synced
Lesson number four:
-
Not Synced
you need champions
at all levels of society.
-
Not Synced
From students to commercial managers
to famous people.
-
Not Synced
And thanks to the attraction
of Green School,
-
Not Synced
we had access to a steady
stream of celebrities.
-
Not Synced
Ban Ki Moon taught us
-
Not Synced
that secretary generals of the United
Nations don't sign petitions.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
Even if kids ask nicely.
-
Not Synced
But he promised to spread the word
-
Not Synced
and now we work closely
with the United Nations.
-
Not Synced
MW: Jane Goodall taught us the power
of a people's network.
-
Not Synced
She started with just one
Roots & Shoots group
-
Not Synced
and now she has 4,000 groups
around the world.
-
Not Synced
We are one of them.
-
Not Synced
She's a real inspiration.
-
Not Synced
If you're a fellow Rotarian,
-
Not Synced
nice to meet you.
-
Not Synced
We're Interactors,
-
Not Synced
the youngest department
of Rotary International.
-
Not Synced
IW: But we have also learned much
about patience,
-
Not Synced
MW: how to deal with frustrations,
-
Not Synced
IW: leadership,
-
Not Synced
MW: teamwork,
-
Not Synced
IW: friendship,
-
Not Synced
MW: we learned more
about Balinese and their culture
-
Not Synced
IW: and we learned
about the importance of commitment.
-
Not Synced
MW: It's not always easy.
-
Not Synced
Sometimes it does get a little bit hard
to walk your talk.
-
Not Synced
IW: But last year we did exactly that.
-
Not Synced
We went to India to give a talk
-
Not Synced
and our parents took us to visit
-
Not Synced
the former private house
of Mahatma Ghandi.
-
Not Synced
We learned about the power
-
Not Synced
of hunger strikes he did
to reach his goals.
-
Not Synced
Yes, by the end of the tour,
-
Not Synced
when we met our parents again,
-
Not Synced
we both made a decision and said,
-
Not Synced
"We're going on a hunger strike."
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
MW: And you can probably
imagine their faces.
-
Not Synced
It took a lot of convincing.
-
Not Synced
And not only to our parents,
-
Not Synced
but to our friends
and to our teachers as well.
-
Not Synced
Isabel and I were serious
about doing this.
-
Not Synced
So we met with a nutritionist
-
Not Synced
and we came up with a compromise
-
Not Synced
of not eating from sunrise
to sunset every day
-
Not Synced
until the governor of Bali
would agree to meet with us
-
Not Synced
to talk about how to stop
plastic bags on Bali.
-
Not Synced
IW:
