Domestic violence | Dakotah Fletcher | TEDxPascoCountySchools

  • 0:10 - 0:12
Did you know that every nine seconds
  • 0:12 - 0:15
a woman in the United States
    is assaulted by their partner?
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    During one year this equates
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    to over 10 million women
    in the United States alone
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    becoming victims of domestic violence.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
Domestic violence is a horrible topic
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    that is most likely
    not going to be stopped.
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    My name is Dakotah Fletcher,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
and I'm going to tell you
    all about domestic violence
  • 0:32 - 0:34
and how it affects us all.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    What is domestic violence?
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    Domestic violence
    is violent, aggressive behavior
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    against someone's spouse or partner.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    One out of four women
and one out of seven men
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    are victims of domestic violence.
  • 0:48 - 0:52
Domestic violence can happen to anyone:
women or men can be victims,
  • 0:52 - 0:57
though it's estimated 80% of victims
    of domestic violence are female.
  • 0:57 - 1:03
Women ages 18 to 34 are at greatest risk
to become victims of domestic violence.
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    One-third of homeless people
are homeless because of domestic violence.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    Victims of domestic violence
  • 1:09 - 1:13
    usually experience depression,
    anxiety, flashbacks,
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    and other emotional distress.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    Children are also affected
    by domestic violence.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    More than three million children
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    witness domestic violence
    in their homes each year.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    Children that live in places
    where domestic violence is happening
  • 1:28 - 1:30
are more likely to be abused too.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    Domestic violence
is like an emotional hurricane -
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    deadly and causes people
    to lose their homes.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
And the only way to stop
the hurricane is to be prepared.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
Always have the police on speed dial,
  • 1:42 - 1:46
and if you know a victim, call
the Domestic Violence Hotline right now
  • 1:46 - 1:52
    because domestic violence
    can cause PTSD, depression,
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    and suicidal behavior.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    The National Domestic Violence Hotline
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    provides life-saving tools
    and immediate support 24/7
  • 1:59 - 2:03
    to help victims find safety
and live their lives free of abuse.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    Through donations and federal grants,
  • 2:05 - 2:09
    they spread awareness and education
    about domestic violence.
  • 2:09 - 2:14
More people become victims of domestic
violence each year than ever before.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    So, please donate today.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
I may only be one person,
  • 2:18 - 2:20
but I hope I've at least opened your eyes
  • 2:20 - 2:24
    to this horrible topic
    that needs to be stopped.
