Basic Barré Chords #1of4 (Guitar Lesson CH-006) How to play
-
0:15 - 0:22Hello my friends, it's Justin again
coming for the first solo video lesson -
0:22 - 0:25meaning that I'm by myself
not that it's about lead guitar. -
0:25 - 0:29And what this lesson's going to
be about is barre chords. -
0:29 - 0:32A lot of people, when they first
start playing barre chords, -
0:32 - 0:35say they have a bit of difficulty trying
to get all the notes clear and clean. -
0:35 - 0:39So I'm going to try to explain to you
where the barre chords come from. -
0:39 - 0:42The basic kind of shapes like you might
have learned an F chord, -
0:42 - 0:43it's called an E shape barre chord.
-
0:43 - 0:46But I'll give you a few tips on
making sure that you get -
0:46 - 0:48the fingering kind of good for that.
-
0:48 - 0:52The first thing is, I've already mentioned
it before, it's an E shape. -
0:52 - 0:56So the very first barre chord shape
that most people learn -
0:56 - 1:00is based really by playing a
regular E chord, -
1:00 - 1:03which I'm hoping you know,
you should know your E chord good -
1:03 - 1:07before you try a barre chord
with an E shape. -
1:07 - 1:12If you refinger that chord,
i.e. change the fingers that -
1:12 - 1:14you use, but keep the dots the same.
-
1:14 - 1:18So you end up using your second,
third and fourth fingers -
1:18 - 1:20and your first finger is free.
-
1:20 - 1:23I'm going to go for a closeup
in a sec, I just have to figure -
1:23 - 1:25out how to do that in a sec.
-
1:25 - 1:29Once that chord shape is down
if you move that shape up -
1:29 - 1:35and put your first finger down,
your first finger is replacing the nut. -
1:35 - 1:39The nut is the little plastic or bone
usually white thing down at -
1:39 - 1:40the end of the guitar neck.
-
1:40 - 1:43So you can see very clearly that
we've got and E chord, -
1:43 - 1:47if we move up everything up one fret
and then put your first finger -
1:47 - 1:50on the first fret, your first
finger has replaced the nut. -
1:50 - 1:54And the reason it's an F chord
is because it's all the same notes -
1:54 - 1:57just everything has been moved higher
by one semi-tone. -
1:57 - 1:59So, now I'm just going to give
you a closeup of that, -
1:59 - 2:03exactly this E to F movement.
And then we'll move it up to an -
2:03 - 2:06A or something and
I'll give you some stuff. -
2:06 - 2:09So I'll get my fancy remote control
thing here, and see if I can -
2:09 - 2:13figure out how to get the camera
to do a closeup on my hand. -
2:13 - 2:15So I'll see you guys in a sec.
-
2:15 - 2:19OK, that didn't seem too bad,
so here we are in a closeup. -
2:19 - 2:23So if we start here with our regular
old faithful E chord. -
2:23 - 2:26So we've got first finger,
first fret, third string. -
2:26 - 2:29Second finger, second fret,
fifth string. -
2:29 - 2:31Third finger, underneath.
-
2:31 - 2:34Remember of course you are trying
to get this finger up as close -
2:34 - 2:36to the fret as you can,
but you can't get it right -
2:36 - 2:40next door because the third finger
is kind of blocking the way a bit. -
2:40 - 2:41So that's your basic E chord.
-
2:41 - 2:45Your first attempt at playing
a barre chord, you should try -
2:45 - 2:47move your second finger to where
your first finger was. -
2:47 - 2:50Your third finger moves to where
your second finger was. -
2:50 - 2:52Your little finger sneaks up there
underneath. -
2:52 - 2:56So you've now got,
second finger, first fret, third string. -
2:56 - 3:01Third finger, on the fifth string second
fret. And little finger underneath on the -
3:01 - 3:04fourth string. So you can see
now that your first finger -
3:04 - 3:07is free to wave and do little
stupid dances and stuff. OK. -
3:07 - 3:11So that's your E chord.
To get to F you move all of those -
3:11 - 3:17notes up one fret, and the first finger
now goes down and covers -
3:17 - 3:21all of the strings. Now even that's
covering all of the strings because -
3:21 - 3:27your second, third, and fourth finger
covering strings three, four, and five. -
3:27 - 3:30You only really needed to cover
the thickest string and the -
3:30 - 3:32thinnest two strings.
-
3:32 - 3:35But in order to do that you kind
of want to put your pressure -
3:35 - 3:39focus your pressure like it's here
in the middle of the barre. -
3:39 - 3:43That's the place that you kind
of focus your energy. -
3:43 - 3:45I know that sounds a bit funny,
hippy stuff. -
3:45 - 3:49But if you think about pressing down
in the middle of the finger, -
3:49 - 3:53it will make the two ends help press
down, kind of consistently. -
3:53 - 3:56Now the other thing with barre chords
that's really important: -
3:56 - 3:59the second, third and fourth fingers
are kind of standard. -
3:59 - 4:02Make sure that they are pressing down
and not trying to lay over like that. -
4:02 - 4:05Regular E, moving up to F.
-
4:05 - 4:09Now when you put the barre down don't
try and press down flat down that way -
4:09 - 4:11with the first finger.
-
4:11 - 4:15Actually what you're trying to do here
is you're trying to roll over -
4:15 - 4:18the part of your finger,
there's my hand. -
4:18 - 4:22The part of the finger that presses
down for the barre is here, -
4:22 - 4:26It's not the flat like this.
It's not that part there that presses -
4:26 - 4:30it's this kind of on the diagonal of
your finger, the edge. -
4:30 - 4:33So what you do is you put your
first finger down flat kind of -
4:33 - 4:36right on the barre itself.
-
4:36 - 4:39So that would be behind the barre,
you can see the barre there now. -
4:39 - 4:41So this is like right on the barre.
-
4:41 - 4:46And then you roll it slightly onto the
side, and then your fingers go down. -
4:46 - 4:52Now by doing that, as you probably know,
your first finger doesn't really -
4:52 - 4:56want to move a lot either way sideways.
I know you can move it a little bit, -
4:56 - 4:57but It doesn't tend to want to.
-
4:57 - 5:02So if you're trying to think of
your barre chord grip like this, -
5:02 - 5:07then when you're trying to, if you're
trying to turn your hand that way -
5:07 - 5:10on the guitar neck here, so this way.
-
5:10 - 5:14You're putting the pressure sideways
with the first finger. -
5:14 - 5:18Think of the pressure as going sideways.
Not going straight down. -
5:18 - 5:21It will make it an awful lot easier to
get your barre chord really solid. -
5:21 - 5:27So put it down on the fret
roll it over onto the side, -
5:27 - 5:30so to kind of like 45 degrees,
it's not the side side. -
5:30 - 5:32And then put your other fingers down.
-
5:32 - 5:38Make sure of course you practice doing
picking your notes one at a time. -
5:38 - 5:40Making sure you get a nice clear chord.
-
5:40 - 5:44Also make sure that your first finger
isn't hanging over the end too much. -
5:44 - 5:47I see some people trying to do their barre
chords with way too much -
5:47 - 5:49of the first finger flopping over.
-
5:49 - 5:52So, keep it down so that basically the
idea would be if you moved it down -
5:52 - 5:56to the fifth string root barre chord,
which we're not going to talk about yet, -
5:56 - 6:00but if you did, the first finger, the tip
of it would be muting the sixth string. -
6:00 - 6:03But we want it, you know,
half a centimeter over the end, -
6:03 - 6:06you know that 's like a quarter
of an inch or something like that -
6:06 - 6:09for you Americans who don't have
the metric system going on yet. -
6:09 - 6:14OK, so, the main thing with the barre
chord is making sure you put it flat, -
6:14 - 6:18roll it over onto the side,
keep the pressure focused in -
6:18 - 6:22the middle of your first finger,
and make sure the rest of your fingers -
6:22 - 6:24is square and not laid over like that.
-
6:24 - 6:28Make sure that they kind
of square up like that. -
6:28 - 6:41It was too long, please join me
-
6:41 - 6:43for Part two.
