Connecting Equality, Justice and Sustainability - Permaculture Action Network

  • 0:00 - 0:02
Today, I am going to introduce you
  • 0:02 - 0:04
    to the Permaculture Action Network,
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    which is an incredible organization
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    that is mobilizing thousands
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    of people across the nation
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    to regenerate the land,
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    to live more sustainably
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    through permaculture and direct action
  • 0:15 - 0:19
while creating more just and equal
    systems.
  • 0:19 - 0:29
    [music]
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    Being in an urban environment
  • 0:31 - 0:34
and doing this type of work is key
  • 0:34 - 0:36
to reaching a lot of people,
  • 0:36 - 0:40
and showing people of all ages
    intergenerational,
  • 0:40 - 0:41
    the importance of knowing where
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    their food comes from,
  • 0:43 - 0:46
and reconnecting the food with the
    community.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    In an urban environment
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    we are densely populated,
  • 0:50 - 0:52
and this is where we need it the most.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
When we think of sustainability, we think,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
okay, how can we kind of limit
  • 0:57 - 0:58
the harm that we are doing
  • 0:58 - 1:00
and keep things where we are at
  • 1:00 - 1:02
more or less, but to be regenerative.
  • 1:02 - 1:03
And say we need to go way
    beyond that.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
There has already been so much
    damage done.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
We need to heal that damage.
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    We need to increase biodiversity,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    create more life afirming systems
  • 1:10 - 1:12
So to regenerate is to really build back
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    that network of connections between
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    all organisms and living things.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
For me a big part of permaculture
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    is actually understanding how
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    to communicate and understanding
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    what people's needs are
  • 1:24 - 1:25
and understanding how to work together
  • 1:25 - 1:27
to meet those needs so that we can
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    make environmentaly sustainable choices.
  • 1:30 - 1:47
    [music]
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    Permaculture Action Network is Rad!
  • 1:49 - 1:52
They are a really amazing group
    of activists.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
You can tell as a company
  • 1:54 - 1:55
and as a network of people,
  • 1:55 - 1:58
they are just very well versed
  • 1:58 - 2:01
in how to do the work, how to move lightly
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    and gracefully within the communities
  • 2:03 - 2:05
that they work with, how to gather people
  • 2:05 - 2:07
and have a lot of different folks
  • 2:07 - 2:09
in charge and in places of leadership.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    Permaculture Action Network
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    partners with performing artists,
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    touring musicians, festivals, to mobilize
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    people from cultural events,
  • 2:17 - 2:19
to days of direct action where we
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    are building regenerative systems
    like these.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
We invite people to spaces to recognize
  • 2:24 - 2:26
that they can learn new skills and become
  • 2:26 - 2:30
    resilient peoples amongst their
    communities.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    To actually provide the necessities
  • 2:32 - 2:35
of life and livelihood in their place.
  • 2:35 - 2:40
Showing up after a tour is holy
    gratifying
  • 2:40 - 2:43
to be able to get your hands in the ground
  • 2:43 - 2:47
and plant a tree or weed a lawn.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
You know, it is just really gratifying
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    on a very base level.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
I think of it as sort of a triangle of
    energy,
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    where Rising Appalachia's
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    or whatever band or musician
  • 2:58 - 3:01
is sort of a bugle call to the people
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    about an action day happening.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    Permaculture action is well versed
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    in organizing in permaculture
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    and getting the tools needed
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    to make that happen.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
And then they work very closely with
  • 3:12 - 3:14
someone on the ground that owns the land,
  • 3:14 - 3:15
or owns the house or the farm
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    or the community garden.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
So it is kind of a triad of support
  • 3:19 - 3:20
    that works really well.
  • 3:20 - 3:33
    [music]
  • 3:33 - 3:35
We are creating a dynamic environment
  • 3:35 - 3:38
in which people can work on collective
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    liberation with one another.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
And everyone benefits from the situation.
  • 3:42 - 3:45
    Regeneration means building back up
    the soil,
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    building back up the community.
  • 3:47 - 3:49
The only way to do that is to have
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    diversity and good energy.
  • 3:52 - 3:54
It is not an environmental movement.
  • 3:55 - 3:56
    It is a cultural movement.
  • 3:56 - 4:00
By permaculture, to me it is kind of
    self explanitory,
  • 4:00 - 4:01
    but it has gotten confused.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
It just means building a culture
  • 4:04 - 4:05
that can sustain into the future.
  • 4:05 - 4:09
I see the healing as an overall big
  • 4:09 - 4:12
process in terms of people healing not
  • 4:12 - 4:14
just their body, but healing their mind.
  • 4:14 - 4:16
I think that is something that I have
  • 4:16 - 4:19
been able to do and been showing
    people how,
  • 4:19 - 4:22
so that they can appreciate the art
  • 4:22 - 4:25
of a farmer or gardener so that
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    later on in life, that...
  • 4:27 - 4:29
Hey, you can do this yourself.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
Healing is being able feed your community.
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    Being able to gather together.
  • 4:33 - 4:35
Being able to talk and share stories
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    and learn new skills.
  • 4:37 - 4:40
It is really imporatant to us to
  • 4:40 - 4:42
do this kind of work in a new way.
  • 4:42 - 4:44
I think the quote that most stands out
  • 4:44 - 4:46
in my mind is, "If you have come
  • 4:46 - 4:48
to help me, then you are wasting
    your time.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
But if you have come because you realize
  • 4:50 - 4:52
your liberation is bound up with mine,
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    then let us work together."
  • 4:53 - 4:55
That right there is what we are
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    trying to create through these
    action days.
  • 4:57 - 4:58
That is what this movement is about.
  • 4:58 - 5:02
Us creating our own futures that we want.
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    That is what regeneration is.
  • 5:04 - 5:06
Constant learning is how we will
  • 5:06 - 5:09
be able to adapt and regenerate.
  • 5:09 - 5:14
    [music]
  • 5:14 - 5:17
In my nearly decade of working in
    sustainability,
  • 5:17 - 5:19
the Permaculture Action Network truly is
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    one of the most authentic,
  • 5:21 - 5:22
    and really well designed,
  • 5:23 - 5:25
    and well thought-out organizations
  • 5:25 - 5:26
    that I have come across.
  • 5:26 - 5:28
They are not just working on
    sustainability.
  • 5:28 - 5:31
It is about true equality and justice
    as well.
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    These things really cannot be
    seperated.
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    They are all together.
  • 5:35 - 5:37
I hope that you will support their
  • 5:37 - 5:38
    work and get involved.
  • 5:38 - 5:40
There are links in the description
  • 5:40 - 5:43
of this video in order to be able to
    do that.
  • 5:43 - 5:46

  • 5:46 - 5:47
    and inspire more people,
  • 5:47 - 5:49
make sure that you like this video,

comment, and share it with people
  • 5:52 - 5:53
who would be inspired by this.
