Are dreams important?

  • 0:02 - 0:03
    (Half bell)
  • 0:10 - 0:17
    (Bell)
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    Dear Thay,
    dear Sangha,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    My question is about consciousness.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
I wonder if you could tell us something
  • 0:39 - 0:43
about the relevance or the importance
of dreams in our sleeping time?
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    About dreams?
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    If we remember the dream,
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    it might be very helpful.
  • 0:59 - 1:03
    Because some dreams
    are like other events,
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    it has a meaning.
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    Sometimes we are surprised
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    because during the day
we did not think of that at all.
  • 1:12 - 1:16
    And yet, during the night,
it appears like that as a surprise.
  • 1:17 - 1:25
Maybe our body, our mind, our ancestors
are trying to show us something.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
    Maybe an ancestor wants us
to look into some bad matter.
  • 1:36 - 1:41
Suppose you live in a country
    that is in a war.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    People, children enjoy peace.
  • 1:48 - 1:55
Whole day long, you speak about peace and
you help people to practice in peace.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
    And yet, during the night,
you saw yourself in a war situation.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
And you run up to the bomb.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
And you are forced into the army
    and you wake up.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    You cannot imagine that.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
So if you remember the dream,
  • 2:18 - 2:22
you see that there must be a cause
that makes the dream comes today.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
Maybe you enjoy the peace in the country
  • 2:26 - 2:29
but you ignore what is going on
    outside of the country.
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    And people continue to run
    under the bombings.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
Children and adults continue to die.
  • 2:37 - 2:42
So, we should not only enjoy peace
  • 2:44 - 2:47
but we should be doing something.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
We should suffer a little bit.
  • 2:52 - 2:55
So that has the kind of energy,
  • 2:55 - 3:01
    we need some mud
in order to grow lotus flowers.
  • 3:05 - 3:11
And that is why I think
each dream has its own message.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
    We can receive the message
    from our dreams.
  • 3:17 - 3:21
    And also during the time
    while we are not sleeping,
  • 3:21 - 3:25
    images can come like that,
    very suddenly.
  • 3:26 - 3:30
All of them come from the depth
    of our consciousness.
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    There must be a cause.
  • 3:33 - 3:36
They may want to remind us
    of our suffering.
  • 3:39 - 3:44
In the practice of mindful eating,
  • 3:45 - 3:53
when you stay in line waiting
for the time you are served the food,
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    you practice mindful breathing,
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    you look around
  • 3:57 - 4:03
    and you see yourself living
in a kind and beautiful environment.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    You have brothers and
    sisters in the practice
  • 4:06 - 4:09
And you can practice mindful breathing,
    mindful walking.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    It is so beautiful.
  • 4:11 - 4:15
    And you enjoy the atmosphere
    and the energy of peace.
  • 4:17 - 4:23
And when you take some food
    to put on your plate,
  • 4:24 - 4:26
you say that: "My plate is empty now,
  • 4:28 - 4:32
but in just a few minutes,
it will be filled with good food."
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    And at the same time,
  • 4:39 - 4:47
    you realize that children
in the third world, in a war country,
  • 4:48 - 4:53
there are children who are holding
    broken plates like this
  • 4:53 - 4:58
    waiting for hours and
do not have anything on it.
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    Suddenly compassion arises
    and there is some suffering.
  • 5:04 - 5:08
The happiness is that, in no time at all,
we have good thing out of it.
  • 5:08 - 5:12
    The suffering is that,
there are children on the streets,
  • 5:12 - 5:15
waiting and will have nothing to eat.
  • 5:17 - 5:21
    That suffering is helpful,
makes us into a good human being.
  • 5:21 - 5:26
    So, getting in touch
    with suffering is good.
  • 5:27 - 5:30
And that is why, we speak
    about the goodness of suffering.
  • 5:35 - 5:40
    And everything is like that,
  • 5:42 - 5:46
a dream is made of non-dream elements.
  • 5:56 - 6:01
    And our suffering,
    our happiness is the same.
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    (Half bell)
  • 6:13 - 6:21
    (Bell)
