Just juice for 60 days | Kabir Kumar | TEDxFremont

  • 0:06 - 0:08
    On June 25, 2011,
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    this was me.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
I don't know if you can tell,
but there're 13 people in that photograph.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    I'm not talking
about 13 people in the back.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
I'm talking about 13 people in the front.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
That's my wife. That's my son.
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    And that's me.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
And there're about ten bowling balls
in that photo that shouldn't be there,
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    but they were there.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    And in 2011, I heard a fact
    that changed my life.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
What I heard was that if you are obese,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    the likelihood of your child
    being obese increases by 50%.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    Let me say that again.
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    If you are obese,
  • 0:40 - 0:46
    the likelihood of your child
    being obese increases by 50%.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
Now, I knew something had to change.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
Every New Year's, I made resolutions.
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    I don't know about you,
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    but my New Year's resolution,
for as long as I could remember, was:
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    this is the year
that I'm going to lose weight,
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    get to the gym,
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    eat right,
  • 1:01 - 1:04
and be the very best person that I can be.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
And every single year, it was the same
    New Year's resolution again.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
And I couldn't figure out why it was
that I would make the same resolution,
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    and I would break it.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    But this year, I knew
    that something had to change.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    I knew that this year,
it could not be the same.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    Because it wasn't just
    about me and my decision,
  • 1:21 - 1:26
it was about how my decision was having
a negative impact on my son's life.
  • 1:26 - 1:29
I knew why I needed to change,
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    but I didn't know
how I could make that change.
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    And then it happened.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
    I saw a documentary called
    Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead,
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    and I found my "how."
  • 1:39 - 1:41
It was a story about an ordinary
    man named Joe Cross,
  • 1:41 - 1:46
who decided that he would change his life
by going on a 60-day juice fast,
  • 1:46 - 1:47
    and he would lose weight.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
And as I watched Joe struggle,
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    day in and day out,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
with his weight loss and his journey,
  • 1:53 - 1:56
I began to sympathize, and even better,
    I began to empathize
  • 1:56 - 1:58
because I knew what he was going through.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
I struggled with my weight my entire life.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
And I knew in my head
that I should be able to do this,
  • 2:04 - 2:05
I should be able to figure this out.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
And I have to do it.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    It's no longer an option.
I need to make this happen.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
So I decided that I was going to do
    a seven-day juice fast.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    And this is not all seven-day's;
this is one-day's worth of juice.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
    So I started.
    I started my juice fast.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
I knew that my journey had begun.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
And I started with day one.
  • 2:24 - 2:25
And on day one, I felt great.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    I had so much energy.
    I was full of adrenaline.
  • 2:28 - 2:30
I was calling up people I knew
  • 2:30 - 2:33
and being like, "I'm doing a juice fast.
This is amazing. You should do it."
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    Many of them
hung up the phone on me.
  • 2:35 - 2:36
    And day one passed.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
And on day two, I started
    to get a little cranky.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    My wife is somewhere here.
She can tell you all about that.
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    It was not good.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
And day three and then day four.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    When day four rolled around,
I was curled up bed, sleeping,
  • 2:48 - 2:51
and I wanted nothing to do more than quit.
  • 2:51 - 2:53
I was done. I had enough.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
I couldn't do this. This was so hard.
  • 2:55 - 2:59
    And what was I thinking?
    Who drinks juice? Only juice?
  • 2:59 - 3:02
I mean, this is crazy, right?
    What am I doing?
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    So day four rolled around,
but I knew I had to push through.
  • 3:05 - 3:10
And I knew that if I could just get
to day seven, something would change
  • 3:10 - 3:13
because everything told me that something
    would change for the better.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
And then it happened. I hit day seven.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
And I had this moment of clarity.
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    (Laughter)
  • 3:20 - 3:23
I like to call it my moment of clarity.
  • 3:23 - 3:29
My doctor, who's here, he called it,
    I believe, "processing ketones."
  • 3:29 - 3:32
But whatever it is you want to call it,
I knew that my life was changed,
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    and I knew that everything
was different from that point on.
  • 3:35 - 3:40
    I was changing my life
    through habits, big and small.
  • 3:40 - 3:44
And see, once I got to seven days,
    it wasn't so hard.
  • 3:44 - 3:48
I was then able to get to 14.
    And from 14, I got to 30.
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    And from 30, I got to 45.
    And from 45, I got to 60.
  • 3:51 - 3:56
And from 60, I got to 63 days
    of an all-juice fast.
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    And it changed my life.
  • 3:58 - 3:59
    Now, you might be wondering.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
Let me tell you something first.
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    What does 63 days
of a juice fast look like?
  • 4:05 - 4:07
So this is what it looked like.
  • 4:07 - 4:12
And in 63 days, I juiced over 500 pounds
    of vegetables and fruits.
  • 4:13 - 4:18
    And I drank 189 glasses
    of juice, and just juice.
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    And it didn't all look
as delicious as this right here.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    (Laughter)
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    But I'll tell you this.
  • 4:23 - 4:25
In the 15 months that followed,
  • 4:25 - 4:29
I knew that I was now making
    the right choices
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    and taking the right decisions.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
And each day, it became easier.
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    I moved it from being,
what I like to call, a nurtured habit
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    to a natural habit.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
I didn't have to think about it any more.
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    It just became automatic.
    It just became automatic.
  • 4:42 - 4:46
And in 15 months, I lost
and kept off nearly 100 pounds.
  • 4:47 - 4:51
I started going to the gym regularly.
I still go three times a week.
  • 4:51 - 4:54
For me, that's a big deal.
I don't go to the gym.
  • 4:54 - 4:57
    It just the place
I drive by on the way to work.
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    (Laughter)
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    I began to exercise regularly.
  • 5:00 - 5:03
    I began to incorporate
    good habits into my life.
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    My body started to auto-correct,
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    started waking up
    earlier in the morning.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    I started implementing
    positive habits in my life.
  • 5:10 - 5:14
And I knew that things had now changed.
There was a momental shift in my life.
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    And I'm telling you
I'm not that different than you.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
I struggled with this my entire life.
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    So I was on auto-pilot.
  • 5:22 - 5:23
And I'm not going to lie to you -
  • 5:23 - 5:24
    I had lapses.
  • 5:24 - 5:27
It was not smooth sailing and easy.
  • 5:27 - 5:28
    In those 15 months,
  • 5:28 - 5:30
    there were so many times
that I fell off the track.
  • 5:30 - 5:33
But what got me back on were three things.
  • 5:33 - 5:37
    One: I was personally accountable
to myself, and to nobody else.
  • 5:38 - 5:39
    It's very important.
  • 5:39 - 5:43
    Number two: I understood
that I had a greater responsibility
  • 5:43 - 5:46
to myself, my family, and those around me.
  • 5:46 - 5:52
And number three: I wanted to give my son
better odds, odds that I didn't have.
  • 5:53 - 5:56
So I'm not here to tell you how this ends.
  • 5:56 - 5:58
I'm here to tell you how it began for me
  • 5:58 - 6:04
and how my life was changed positively
by implementing small and large habits
  • 6:04 - 6:05
    throughout my life
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    and in over 15 months
    being able to sustain that.
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    But I will say this.
  • 6:10 - 6:13
    I now own the responsibility
    for my health.
  • 6:13 - 6:17
And I now own those decisions every day
    that make my life better.
  • 6:18 - 6:19
And I'll ask you one thing.
  • 6:19 - 6:22
I'll tell you that you don't have
    to wait a single minute
  • 6:22 - 6:25
    to start making positive
    decisions in your life,
  • 6:25 - 6:29
    to improve it, and improve
the life of your family around you.
  • 6:29 - 6:33
And remember, it is not about the juice.
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    It is about the journey
  • 6:35 - 6:37
and the influence that I had on my son.
  • 6:37 - 6:39
I'll show you a quick video.
  • 6:39 - 6:42
    (Video) Woman (offscreen):
And what are you doing, Madah?
  • 6:42 - 6:43
    Madah: I'm juicing.
  • 6:44 - 6:47
    Woman (offscreen): What kind
    of juice are you making?
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    Madah: I'm making tomato juice.
  • 6:49 - 6:52
    Kabir Kumar: And now
    you're going to make ...
  • 6:52 - 6:53
    carrot juice.
  • 6:54 - 6:57
    (Juicer whirring loudly)
  • 7:01 - 7:04
Drop it in. Drop it in.
  • 7:06 - 7:08
    Thank you.
  • 7:08 - 7:09
    (Applause)
