2:58 - 3:03And I thank all of them for the leadership they continue to give.
-
3:03 - 3:10They continue to inspire all of us to action.
-
3:10 - 3:14Dear brothers and sisters,
-
3:14 - 3:18Do remember one thing.
-
3:18 - 3:23Malala day is not my day.
-
3:23 - 3:28Today is the day of every woman,
-
3:28 - 3:39every boy and every girl who have raised their voice for their rights.
-
3:39 - 3:43There are hundreds of human rights activists
-
3:43 - 3:49and social workers who are not only speaking for their rights,
-
3:49 - 3:58but who are struggling to achieve their goals of peace, education, and equality.
-
3:58 - 4:04Thousands of people have been killed by the terrorists and millions have been injured.
-
4:04 - 4:09I'm just one of them.
-
4:09 - 4:12So here I stand
-
4:12 - 4:17So here I stand one girl among many.
-
4:17 - 4:27I speak, not for myself, but for those without voice can be heard.
-
4:27 - 4:33Those who have fought for their rights.
-
4:33 - 4:37Their right to live in peace.
-
4:37 - 4:42Their right to be treated with dignity.
-
4:42 - 4:46Their right to equality of opportunity.
-
4:46 - 4:51Their right to be educated.
-
4:51 - 4:57Dear Friends, on the 9th of October 2012,
-
4:57 - 5:03the Taliban shot me on the left side of my forehead.
-
5:03 - 5:07They shot my friends, too.
-
5:07 - 5:13They thought that the bullets would silence us.
-
5:13 - 5:17But they failed.
-
5:17 - 5:22Out of that silence came, thousands of voices.
-
5:22 - 5:28The terrorists thought that they would change our aims and stop our ambitions.
-
5:28 - 5:32But, nothing changed in my life except this.
-
5:32 - 5:37Weakness, fear, and hopelessness died.
-
5:37 - 5:58Strength, power and courage was born.
-
5:58 - 6:01I am the same Malala.
-
6:01 - 6:06My ambitions are the same. My hopes are the same.
-
6:06 - 6:09and my dreams are the same.
-
6:09 - 6:14Dear sisters and brothers,
-
6:14 - 6:17I'm not against anyone.
-
6:17 - 6:25Neither am I here to speak in terms of personal revenge against the Taliban, or any other terrorists group.
-
6:25 - 6:41I am here to speak up for the right of education of every child.
-
6:41 - 6:48I want education for the sons and the daughters of the Taliban and all the terrorists and extremists.
-
6:48 - 6:52I do not even hate the Talib who shot me.
-
6:52 - 6:57Even if there is a gun in my hand and he stands in front of me.
-
6:57 - 7:00I would not shoot him.
-
7:00 - 7:05This is the compassion that I have learnt from Muhammad, the prophet of mercy,
-
7:05 - 7:09and Jesus christ, and Lord Buddha.
-
7:09 - 7:14This is the legacy of change that I have inherited from Martin Luther King,
-
7:14 - 7:27Nelson Mandela and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
-
7:27 - 7:36This is the philosophy of non-violence that I have learnt from Gandhi, Bacha Khan, and Mother Teresa.
-
7:36 - 7:52And this is the forgiveness that I have learnt from my father and from my mother.
-
7:52 - 8:01This is what my soul is telling me, be peaceful and love everyone.
-
8:01 - 8:05Dear sisters and brothers,
-
8:05 - 8:13we realize the importance of light when we see darkness.
-
8:13 - 8:19We realize the importance of our voice when we are silenced.
-
8:19 - 8:25In the same way, when we were in Swat, the north of Pakistan,
-
8:25 - 8:31we realized the importance of pens and books when we saw the guns.
-
8:31 - 8:38The wise saying, “The pen is mightier than sword" was true.
-
8:38 - 8:45The extremists were and they are afraid of books and pens.
-
8:45 - 8:52The power of education, the power of education frightens them.
-
8:52 - 8:55They are afraid of women.
-
8:55 - 8:59The power of the voice of women frightens them.
-
8:59 - 9:07And that is why they killed 14 innocent students in the recent attack in Quetta.
-
9:07 - 9:14And that is why they killed female teachers and polio workers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
-
9:14 - 9:17That is why they are blasting schools every day.
-
9:17 - 9:28Because they were and they are afraid of change, afraid of the equality that we will bring into our society.
-
9:28 - 9:36I remember that there was a boy in our school who was asked by a journalist,
-
9:36 - 9:40“Why are the Taliban against education?"
-
9:40 - 9:43He answered very simply.
-
9:43 - 9:47By pointing to his book he said,
-
9:47 - 9:53“A Talib doesn't know what is written inside this book."
-
9:53 - 9:58They think that God is a tiny, little conservative being
-
9:58 - 10:03who send girls to the hell just because of going to school.
-
10:03 - 10:22The terrorists are misusing the name of Islam and Pashtun society for their own personal benefits.
-
10:22 - 10:26Pakistan is a peace-loving democratic country.
-
10:26 - 10:30Pashtuns want education for their daughters and sons.
-
10:30 - 10:35And Islam is a religion of peace, humanity and brotherhood.
-
10:35 - 10:43Islam says it's not only each child's right to get education, rather it is their duty and responsibility.
-
10:43 - 10:46Honourable secretary general,
-
10:46 - 10:50peace is necessary for education.
-
10:50 - 10:55In many parts of the world especially Pakistan and Afghanistan,
-
10:55 - 11:01terrorism, wars, and conflicts stop children to go to their schools.
-
11:01 - 11:05We are really tired of these wars.
-
11:05 - 11:10Women and children are suffering in many ways,
-
11:10 - 11:14in many parts of the world.
-
11:14 - 11:23In India, innocent and poor children are victims of child labour.
-
11:23 - 11:27Many schools have been destroyed in Nigeria.
-
11:27 - 11:35People in Afghanistan have been affected by the hurdles of extremism for decades.
-
11:35 - 11:44Young girls have to do domestic child labour and are forced to get married at early age.
-
11:44 - 11:53Poverty, ignorance, injustice, racism and the deprivation of basic rights
-
11:53 - 11:58are the main problems faced by both men and women.
-
11:58 - 12:05Dear fellows, today I am focusing on women's rights and girls' education
-
12:05 - 12:09because they are suffering the most.
-
12:09 - 12:15There was a time when women social activists asked men to stand up for their rights.
-
12:15 - 12:33This time, we will do it by ourselves.
-
12:33 - 12:38I am not telling men to step away from speaking for women's rights.
-
12:38 - 12:45Rather, I am focusing on women to be independent to fight for themselves.
-
12:45 - 12:51So dear sisters and brothers, now it's time to speak up.
-
12:51 - 13:03So today, we call upon the world leaders to change their strategic policies in favour of peace and prosperity.
-
13:03 - 13:12We call upon the world leaders that all the peace deals must protect women's and children's rights.
-
13:12 - 13:28A deal that goes against the rights of women is unacceptable.
-
13:28 - 13:45We call upon all governments to ensure free compulsory education all over the world for every child.
-
13:45 - 13:51We call upon all governments to fight against terrorism and violence,
-
13:51 - 13:56to protect children from brutality and harm.
-
13:56 - 14:02We call upon the developed nations to support the expansion of educational opportunities
-
14:02 - 14:06for girls in the developing world.
-
14:06 - 14:12We call upon all the communities to be tolerant
-
14:12 - 14:21to reject prejudice based on caste, creed, sect, color, religion, or gender.
-
14:21 - 14:28To ensure freedom and equality for women so that they can flourish.
-
14:28 - 14:36We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.
-
14:36 - 14:41We call upon our sisters around the world to be brave.
-
14:41 - 14:49to embrace the strength within themselves and realize their full potential.
-
14:49 - 15:02Dear brothers and sisters, we want schools and education for every child's bright future.
-
15:02 - 15:10We will continue our journey to our destination of peace and education.
-
15:10 - 15:13No one can stop us.
-
15:13 - 15:22We will speak up for our rights and we will bring change through our voice.
-
15:22 - 15:29We believe in the power and the strength of our words.
-
15:29 - 15:33Our words can change the whole world.
-
15:33 - 15:42Because we are all together, united for the cause of education.
-
15:42 - 15:52And if we want to achieve our goal, then let us empower ourselves with the weapon of knowledge
-
15:52 - 16:00and let us shield ourselves with unity and togetherness.
-
16:00 - 16:03Dear brothers and sisters,
-
16:03 - 16:09we must not forget that millions of people are suffering from poverty,
-
16:09 - 16:14injustice, and ignorance.
-
16:14 - 16:21We must not forget that millions of children are out of their schools.
-
16:21 - 16:30We must not forget that our sisters and brothers are waiting for a bright peaceful future.
-
16:30 - 16:32So let us wage,
-
16:32 - 16:40So let us wage a global struggle against illiteracy, poverty, and terrorism.
-
16:40 - 16:46Let us pick up, let us pick up our books and our pens.
-
16:46 - 16:50They are our most powerful weapons.
-
16:50 - 17:01One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world.
-
17:01 - 17:05Education is the only solution.
-
17:05 - 17:08Education First.
-
17:08 - 17:12Thank you.
