What decision did you make about feeding?

  • Not Synced
    What decisions did you make
    make about feeding
  • Not Synced
    We wanted to hold off
having a PEG as long as possible
  • Not Synced
    and to carry on feeding
  • Not Synced
    Isabella orally.
  • Not Synced
    However, that got brought
    forward by
  • Not Synced
    probably about three or
    four months earlier
  • Not Synced
than what we wanted to happen.
  • Not Synced
But, at the time, it couldn't
    have come quick enough.
  • Not Synced
    Feeding was becoming a really
    desperate situation,
  • Not Synced
and really hard work for Isabella.
  • Not Synced
So, there was no choice in
    the matter.
  • Not Synced
She had to have a PEG, or that
would be the end of her life.
  • Not Synced
    With Amelie's feeding
  • Not Synced
    we were lucky
  • Not Synced
and at the time we felt
    unlucky.
  • Not Synced
We went in for a routine
    videofluoroscopy,
  • Not Synced
just to check out her swallow.
  • Not Synced
And this was on the dreaded
    Friday afternoon for that procedure,
  • Not Synced
and the next thing we know, we're
being told we can't take her home
  • Not Synced
    she needs to have feeding
    intervention,
  • Not Synced
we're going to be putting an NG tube
in because she is at risk of aspiration.
  • Not Synced
At the time it was awful.
  • Not Synced
But looking back it was probably one
    of the best decisions
  • Not Synced
    that happened for us
    and for her,
  • Not Synced
because we never had that worry
    with her feeding.
  • Not Synced
At the time she was slow at
    chewing,
  • Not Synced
but she never really ever had
an issues with swallowing too much.
  • Not Synced
She was never, really, aspiring when
    she ate, it was more
  • Not Synced
the risk of why they wanted to
    intervene now, so we could
  • Not Synced
    maintain her chest integrity.
  • Not Synced
Which, touch wood, has been fine, and she
    doesn't particularly get bad
  • Not Synced
chest infections. She gets the odd
    cold or flu.
  • Not Synced
But I think because we intervened
    that early with her feeding
  • Not Synced
she didn't have any of those
    other issues.
  • Not Synced
Also, it meant she was also getting
    the right calorie amount,
  • Not Synced
she continued to grow, no failure
    to thrice issues which some
  • Not Synced
of the kids get because they take
    so long to feed,
  • Not Synced
or spending three hours at dinner.
  • Not Synced
We never had those problems, one of
    those added stressors that
  • Not Synced
    other families go through.
  • Not Synced
So at the time we thought it was
    very early, but looking back
  • Not Synced
it was probably the best thing
    that happened.
  • Not Synced
With the NG tube, we then
  • Not Synced
were very lucky to get her to have
    a PEG very quickly.
  • Not Synced
    Probably in about a month
  • Not Synced
that she had a PEG, which has
    probably been the best
  • Not Synced
    decision as well.
  • Not Synced
It's very easy to administer all
    the medications,
  • Not Synced
    and to make sure she
    gets the feed.
  • Not Synced
With the ketogenic diet we need
to make sure that all of her
  • Not Synced
    medication is sugar free.
  • Not Synced
    There are all these other
    complications, which would
  • Not Synced
have been very difficult if we
    were feeding her orally.
  • Not Synced
Or even by the NG tube,
  • Not Synced
    because it is much more
    labour intensive.
  • Not Synced
    We fed Ruby by mouth
  • Not Synced
for as long as we could.
  • Not Synced
    Probably longer than the
    doctors like us to.
  • Not Synced
But I liked to feed her by mouth
    because she could taste things,
  • Not Synced
and that was one sense that
    she did have quite strongly.
  • Not Synced
    We continued to do that,
  • Not Synced
and even after she got her g-tube
  • Not Synced
    in her tummy
  • Not Synced
we continued to feed her tasters
    by mouth.
  • Not Synced
Not large volumes, that went through
her tube, but we still continued
  • Not Synced
to give her tasters when it
    was safe, around secretions
  • Not Synced
    and airways.
  • Not Synced
    He ate up to
  • Not Synced
    three years old.
  • Not Synced
It was very hard for me to
    give him an g-tube.
  • Not Synced
I was crying, and I hated the doctors who
    told me that he
  • Not Synced
    had to have it.
  • Not Synced
    But now it's wonderful.
  • Not Synced
I spoke to a lot of parents about
    the PEG
  • Not Synced
and most of them say it's the
    most horrific decision they
  • Not Synced
    had to make.
  • Not Synced
Although it is very difficult, I didn't
    feel that way.
  • Not Synced
When, Amelie had the videofluoroscopy she
    was eating well.
  • Not Synced
I think she had a meat stew the night
    before.
  • Not Synced
But, she did cough after she fed, and
    that was because she started
  • Not Synced
to not be able to direct
    her food where she should,
  • Not Synced
    and the doctor said something
to us that was very important.
  • Not Synced
It's not comfortable for her what
    she is doing.
  • Not Synced
In fact, we did do that.
  • Not Synced
We did eat and cough after every
    mouthful.
  • Not Synced
    It is extremely uncomfortable and
    I thought actually
  • Not Synced
I'd rather she keeps a memory
of what it is to eat nicely than go
  • Not Synced
through feeding and not enjoying it
and coughing all the time, and not
  • Not Synced
    having that good memory, of
something that is so nice and
  • Not Synced
    that she enjoyed so much.
  • Not Synced
    Obviously, the safety behind it.
  • Not Synced
In the long term, this was the best
for her, in terms of keeping
  • Not Synced
    her comfortable and making sure
    we were giving her
  • Not Synced
the best possible way to keeping
    her healthy and not having
  • Not Synced
to deal with chest infections as
    much.
  • Not Synced
I think that was for us, really
    important.
