How to Tune Your Guitar To Open E Tuning (Guitar Lesson ES-033)

  • 0:05 - 0:07
Hi, how you doing? Justin here.
  • 0:07 - 0:11
Today, I'm going to show you how to get
your guitar into Open E Tuning.
  • 0:11 - 0:17
Now, Open D Tuning and Open E Tuning
are the same tuning, just a tone apart.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
The difference is that to get to Open D
Tuning, you're tuning a lot of notes down.
  • 0:21 - 0:25
But to get to Open E Tuning,
you're tuning a few notes up.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
Which is a little riskier as far as
    breaking strings and stuff goes.
  • 0:28 - 0:35
So normally if-if I was playing in Open E,
I would tune down to Open D Tuning
  • 0:35 - 0:38
and put a capo on the 2nd fret,
and then I'm in Open E.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
But I'll show you how to get to Open E,
  • 0:40 - 0:42
just in case there's a song
    you're doing that's using it,
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    you'll wanna sus it out.
  • 0:43 - 0:51
So the tuning for Open E will be
    E-B-E-G#-B-E.
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    So the thickest string and
    the thinnest two strings,
  • 0:54 - 0:56
are gonna stay exactly the same.
  • 0:56 - 1:01
First thing we have to do is tune the
A string up one tone to the note B.
  • 1:01 - 1:05
Easiest way to do that is to play
a harmonic at the 12th fret,
  • 1:05 - 1:06
and then an open B string.
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    Okay? Shouldn't be...
  • 1:13 - 1:16
...it's not a huge kind of a tune that
    one, just up a tone.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
Now we've gotta tune the open D string
up a tone to the note E.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
So, again we're gonna use the, uh,
harmonic at the 12th fret of the D string,
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    with the thinnest E string.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    That's pretty good so far.
  • 1:42 - 1:49
Now we've got to get our, uh, G string
up a semitone to the note G#. Okay?
  • 1:49 - 1:54
Now to do that, because we've already
tuned our D string a little bit,
  • 1:54 - 1:58
We're gonna use the 4th fret of the
D string, or the fourth string,
  • 1:58 - 2:01
and that will be our note G#.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    It's just a little one,
    it's only a semitone.
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    Okay? And we've got it.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
So, 4th fret of the fourth string...
  • 2:12 - 2:14
...will get the open G string.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
We're tuning the G up to the note G#.
  • 2:16 - 2:20
Now, as usual, open tunings you gotta
have a little bit of a tweak at the end.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    Well, you usually do,
    that's pretty damn near perfect.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    It's a beautiful tuning,
    Open D and Open E.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    Lovely, lots of fun,
great fun with slide guitar as well.
  • 2:46 - 2:50
So, definitely a fun one to explore, if
you're checking out like "Gimme Shelter"
  • 2:50 - 2:53
or something like that, a lot of those
Stones songs are in Open E.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    Uh... great tuning, great tuning.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
Hope you have lots of fun exploring it,
  • 2:57 - 2:59
and I'll see you for plenty more
    songs and lessons very soon.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    Take care of yourselves,
    bye-bye.
