The Real Purpose of Life - John Dees
-
0:07 - 0:14We have a great privilege to be able to look into the Word together;
-
0:14 - 0:22so why don't we pray, and then we'll go ahead and get started tonight. (P)
-
0:33 - 0:40Father in heaven, we humble ourselves before You now.
-
0:40 - 0:43We come to You empty-handed.
-
0:43 - 0:48We come to You, Lord, without anything to offer to You.
-
0:48 - 0:54We need Your grace, and we believe that You are a gracious God,
-
0:54 - 0:58that You give good gifts,
-
0:58 - 1:04that there's no shadow in You, no change, no variation.
-
1:04 - 1:14Father we pray tonight, please give us bread from heaven.
-
1:14 - 1:16Feed us with Your Word.
-
1:16 - 1:21Lord, this world has nothing; this world is a barren wasteland.
-
1:21 - 1:24We need You, Lord.
-
1:25 - 1:33In Your Word there is life, in Your Son is everything that we need.
-
1:33 - 1:38I pray and ask You tonight, Father,
for those that are outside of Christ, -
1:38 - 1:40that You'd give them ears to hear.
-
1:40 - 1:47Help them to understand what Your truth is, what Your Word says,
-
1:47 - 1:54who Your Son is, who they are.
-
1:54 - 1:55Father I pray that You would be present;
-
1:55 - 2:01I pray that You would give power, and love,
-
2:01 - 2:07and the manifestation of the truth for Your people, Lord.
-
2:07 - 2:13I pray that You would keep them from being confused or distracted.
-
2:13 - 2:25Let Your Word be clear that even they could
rejoice and grow in the knowledge of Your Son. -
2:25 - 2:27Would You assist me, Father I pray,
-
2:27 - 2:31be with my mouth now as I would speak Your Word.
-
2:31 - 2:37Guard this time from any error or any thing of the flesh.
-
2:37 - 2:41We wait on You Lord, our eyes are on You.
-
2:41 - 2:48Thank You, thank You Lord, in Jesus name. Amen. (P)
-
2:53 - 2:58Well, praise the Lord!
-
2:58 - 3:07When we are hungry for God, God is very faithful to feed us.
-
3:07 - 3:11When we come with a longing, God is very faithful;
-
3:11 - 3:18and my desire is that for every one here,
the Lord would say something, the Lord would speak. -
3:18 - 3:21And maybe your need is different than someone else's,
-
3:21 - 3:26but if you want to hear from the Lord,
the Lord is very willing to speak. -
3:26 - 3:30And now we're about to open up His Word, His Truth.
-
3:30 - 3:35There's nothing like what we have right here in the Scriptures. (P)
-
3:35 - 3:40Let's open up to Luke chapter one.
-
3:47 - 3:59We're going to read a prophecy that was spoken
right at the beginning of the New Testament, -
3:59 - 4:05right around the time of the birth of John the baptist.
-
4:07 - 4:15We'll read from Luke 1:57-80, but before we do,
-
4:15 - 4:18I want to explain a little bit about what's going on,
-
4:18 - 4:26just so we have in mind why we're gonna read this,
why it is important, what it is about. -
4:26 - 4:35This prophecy is really amazing in a way because
at the very beginning of the New Testament -
4:35 - 4:39when Christ was about to come, when He was about to arrive,
-
4:39 - 4:44there were several prophecies saying that all of the Old Testament,
-
4:44 - 4:49all of the expectation, all of the older prophecies,
-
4:49 - 4:51were finally going to be fulfilled.
-
4:51 - 4:54And now was the time.
-
4:54 - 5:00And so, in a way it's a prophecy about
all these older prophecies coming to pass. -
5:00 - 5:06And in a way it's a summary of the whole message of the Bible.
-
5:06 - 5:13So if maybe you felt like, "I don't really understand what the Bible is about.
-
5:13 - 5:15What does it mean to be a Christian?
-
5:15 - 5:18I never grew up in a Christian home, I didn't go to church,
-
5:18 - 5:21I've never read the Bible, I've definitely never read the Old Testament.
-
5:21 - 5:23What is this all about?"
-
5:23 - 5:29These are good verses; and that's what
we're going to look at here tonight. (P) -
5:29 - 5:33John the baptist is being born, this prophecy comes,
-
5:33 - 5:38and we can understand what the big picture is in life.
-
5:38 - 5:43You know, I ask a lot of people, "What is the meaning of life?"
-
5:43 - 5:47And most people don't know. They don't know why they're alive.
-
5:47 - 5:51"Why am I here? Where am I going?"
-
5:51 - 5:57Well, hopefully the Lord will show us tonight. (P)
-
5:57 - 6:05Let's read. Luke 1:57, "Now the time
had come for Elizabeth to give birth, -
6:05 - 6:09and she gave birth to a son."
-
6:09 - 6:11Now this is going to be John the baptist.
-
6:11 - 6:16He is born as a little baby, and the time had come.
-
6:16 - 6:23"Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the
Lord had displayed His great mercy toward her; -
6:23 - 6:26and they were rejoicing with her.
-
6:26 - 6:31And it happened that on the eighth day
they came to circumcise the child, -
6:31 - 6:35and they were going to call him Zacharias, after his father.
-
6:35 - 6:40But his mother answered and said,
'No indeed; but he shall be called John.' -
6:40 - 6:47And they said to her, 'There is no one among
your relatives who is called by that name.' -
6:47 - 6:48And they made signs to his father."
-
6:48 - 6:54So the mum said, "Call him John," and they didn't trust the mum's words,
-
6:54 - 6:57so now they're asking the dad's advice.
-
6:57 - 7:03But he can't speak, so they're using sign language
or some kind of communicating with him. (P) -
7:03 - 7:08"They made signs to his father, as to what he wanted him called.
-
7:08 - 7:16And he asked for a tablet and wrote as follows, 'His name is John.'"
-
7:16 - 7:19So his dad has already has his mind made up:
-
7:19 - 7:23this was all from the Lord, this is a special child.
-
7:23 - 7:26"'His name is John.' And they were all astonished.
-
7:26 - 7:32And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed,
-
7:32 - 7:35and he began to speak in praise of God."
-
7:35 - 7:42What happened? When God told him he
was going to have a son in their old age, -
7:42 - 7:45John the baptist was going to born, he didn't believe Him.
-
7:45 - 7:50And God took away his ability to speak, until the child was to be born.
-
7:50 - 7:55And so now, he got the picture, he knew this was of God,
-
7:55 - 7:57he knew what was going to happen, he did believe;
-
7:57 - 7:58and he said, "His name is John."
-
7:58 - 8:04And at this point he got his ability to speak back.
-
8:04 - 8:07"And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed,
-
8:07 - 8:09and he began to speak in praise of God."
-
8:09 - 8:11Before that, he couldn't say a word.
-
8:11 - 8:18And now, as soon as his mouth is opened, he begins just praising God.
-
8:18 - 8:20It's a miracle. (P)
-
8:20 - 8:23"Fear came on all those living around them;
-
8:23 - 8:27and all these matters were being talked about
in all the hill country of Judea. -
8:27 - 8:34All who heard them kept them in mind, saying,
'What then will this child turn out to be?' -
8:34 - 8:37For the hand of the Lord was certainly with him."
-
8:37 - 8:43They had been waiting for 400 years and hadn't heard any prophecy.
-
8:43 - 8:47They had all these promises in the Old Testament
that one day a Savior would come. -
8:47 - 8:49And then it was like everything went silent.
-
8:49 - 8:52And they were waiting and waiting and waiting.
-
8:52 - 8:54And now the miracles were starting again.
-
8:54 - 8:59And there was a child that was going to be born,
and he was going to be a prophet. -
8:59 - 9:02And so the word started to spread.
-
9:02 - 9:04And this is the beginning, but now look at what happens;
-
9:04 - 9:08now we get a detailed look at what the father said.
-
9:08 - 9:12When his tongue was loosed, when he began to praise God,
-
9:12 - 9:15we get a detailed look of what he actually said. (P)
-
9:15 - 9:26Verse 67, "And his father Zacharias was filled with
the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying..." -
9:26 - 9:30What we're about to read is not the words of a man.
-
9:30 - 9:33This is God speaking through a man. This is prophecy.
-
9:33 - 9:38This is the Holy Spirit sending a message to the earth.
-
9:38 - 9:40That's what we need.
-
9:40 - 9:44If we want to find the meaning of life, you can't find it on your own;
-
9:44 - 9:51but God can reveal it to you, He can speak from heaven.
-
9:51 - 9:58Here's what he says: "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel (the Jewish nation),
-
9:58 - 10:02for He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people,
-
10:02 - 10:08and has raised up a horn of salvation for
us in the house of David His servant-- -
10:08 - 10:12as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old--
-
10:12 - 10:19Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us."
-
10:19 - 10:22Who's that? The Romans? No.
-
10:22 - 10:26"To show mercy toward our fathers,
and to remember His holy covenant, -
10:26 - 10:30the oath which He swore to Abraham our father,
-
10:30 - 10:34to grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies,
-
10:34 - 10:41might serve Him without fear, in holiness and
righteousness before Him all our days. -
10:41 - 10:48'And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
-
10:48 - 10:53for you will go on before the Lord to prepare His ways;
-
10:53 - 10:58to give to His people the knowledge of
salvation by the forgiveness of their sins, -
10:58 - 11:01because of the tender mercy of our God,
-
11:01 - 11:05with which the Sunrise from on high will visit us,
-
11:05 - 11:10to shine upon those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
-
11:10 - 11:15to guide our feet into the way of peace.'"
-
11:15 - 11:17And that was the end of his prophecy.
-
11:17 - 11:21"And the child continued to grow and to become strong in spirit,
-
11:21 - 11:28and he lived in the deserts until the
day of his public appearance to Israel." (P) -
11:28 - 11:31Well, Amen! This is the word of the Lord.
-
11:31 - 11:34So now let's look at it, piece at a time,
-
11:34 - 11:38and just try and get a picture for what God is doing in the world.
-
11:38 - 11:41What is the message of the Bible?
-
11:41 - 11:44What were the Jews waiting for?
-
11:44 - 11:48Those hundreds and thousands of years while
they were waiting, what were they waiting for? -
11:48 - 11:57Because here, at the very beginning of the
New Testament, it's all coming to pass. -
11:57 - 12:00Let's look back up in Verse 68, it says this:
-
12:00 - 12:07"Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited us."
-
12:07 - 12:12He has visited us - this is the first thing.
-
12:12 - 12:15God has visited us.
-
12:15 - 12:19Now this is in past tense, which is interesting, you wouldn't expect that.
-
12:19 - 12:24You would think he's about to say, "God will visit us."
-
12:24 - 12:27But it's like this: sometimes when something is right...
-
12:27 - 12:34(because Jesus hasn't been born yet, Jesus isn't
the one in the picture. This is John the baptist), -
12:34 - 12:37but when something is about to happen,
-
12:37 - 12:41when something is right up on the edge of taking place,
-
12:41 - 12:44it's like everything is about to spill over.
-
12:44 - 12:47It's like the whole avalanche is about to fall.
-
12:47 - 12:52All of these promises have been stacked up
and waiting and waiting and waiting. -
12:52 - 12:57And now with the birth, not of Jesus,
but with the birth of John the baptist, -
12:57 - 12:59this is like the beginning of the end.
-
12:59 - 13:01This is when everything is going to rush in -
-
13:01 - 13:06the kingdom of God is going to come in a powerful way.
-
13:06 - 13:14And now, now that John was born,
he said by the Holy Spirit, "God has visited us." -
13:14 - 13:18Now it's taking place. Now it's begun. (P)
-
13:18 - 13:24What does it mean for God to visit us? Has God ever visited you?
-
13:24 - 13:28You know, some people say, "I had this dream, I had this vision;
-
13:28 - 13:32and I saw God, I saw Jesus Christ."
-
13:32 - 13:36Sometimes you really question some of
those people when you get to know them. -
13:36 - 13:39They're not really spiritual people, they're not really godly people.
-
13:39 - 13:42They say they had these visitations from God,
-
13:42 - 13:46and it makes you think, "Mehn, don't talk like that."
-
13:46 - 13:54But in another way it is true, that to be a Christian means you're visited by God.
-
13:54 - 13:56This is what we want in life.
-
13:56 - 13:59We want to know God.
-
13:59 - 14:03We want to meet with God. We want to experience God.
-
14:03 - 14:05I can remember when I was a new Christian,
-
14:05 - 14:08there was a book being passed around, I never read it,
-
14:08 - 14:12but just the title grabbed at me, just laid hold of me.
-
14:12 - 14:15The book was called Experiencing God.
-
14:15 - 14:19And I just thought, "Wow, that's amazing!"
-
14:19 - 14:23It's possible to know God.
-
14:23 - 14:29Some people feel like, "Where is God?
Why can't I see God? Why don't I know God?" -
14:29 - 14:31But it is possible to know God. (P)
-
14:31 - 14:35But here's the thing: you can't go up into heaven and find Him;
-
14:35 - 14:37He has to come and visit you.
-
14:37 - 14:40And that is what He does.
-
14:40 - 14:43God is a God that loves to reveal Himself.
-
14:43 - 14:48God is a God that is willing to show up and speak.
-
14:48 - 14:51The dangerous thing is, sometimes people say, "God, where are you?"
-
14:51 - 14:54And then He shows up.
-
14:54 - 14:59He is a Living God, He is the One True God.
-
14:59 - 15:05To know God is the greatest blessing.
This is the greatest treasure in all of life. -
15:05 - 15:10Adam and Eve, what was it that they had that was so great?
-
15:10 - 15:13Was it fruit? We have fruit.
-
15:13 - 15:20Was it Paradise? You can take a vacation to
the Bahamas or Palm Springs or wherever. -
15:20 - 15:23What was Adam and Eve's blessing?
-
15:23 - 15:26The blessing was that they knew God.
-
15:26 - 15:29They were in the presence of God.
-
15:29 - 15:32It says in the Bible that Adam and Eve,
-
15:32 - 15:37that God would walk in the midst of the garden in the cool of the day.
-
15:37 - 15:42The Lord would visit them. That was Adam and Eve's treasure.
-
15:42 - 15:44And that's what we've lost.
-
15:44 - 15:47That's why the world is so empty.
-
15:47 - 15:52That's why the world feels like such a cold place,
not just because of our own sin, -
15:52 - 15:57but because God, who is the source of all life and all blessing, is absent.
-
15:57 - 16:00That is the big problem.
-
16:00 - 16:04Where is the Lord? We've lost what Adam and Eve had. (P)
-
16:04 - 16:11Here's the thing: People will place their treasure
in all these other smaller things that don't really matter. -
16:11 - 16:18For example, there is a famous verse in the Bible (Jer. 9:23) that says,
-
16:18 - 16:21"Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom."
-
16:21 - 16:24People will boast in their knowledge and their wisdom.
-
16:24 - 16:28"Let not the strong man boast in his strength.
-
16:28 - 16:30Let not the rich man boast in his riches."
-
16:30 - 16:32None of that really matters.
-
16:32 - 16:36Whether you're wise, whether you're smart,
-
16:36 - 16:41whether you're beautiful, whether you're strong, whether you're tough,
-
16:41 - 16:42none of that really matters.
-
16:42 - 16:44And the world just pursues this.
-
16:44 - 16:49Instead of searching for God, what does the world do?
-
16:49 - 16:52It finds a different treasure.
-
16:52 - 16:57"I'll get this degree. I'll get this career. I'll get this money.
-
16:57 - 17:00I'll get this girlfriend, or I'll get this boyfriend."
-
17:00 - 17:02And that becomes the treasure.
-
17:02 - 17:06And they get really happy if they get it,
and really broken and sad if they don't. (P) -
17:06 - 17:09Most people, when you meet them,
-
17:09 - 17:13they say, "Mehn, my life is just falling apart.
I'm just so broke and I'm so empty." -
17:13 - 17:17And you ask them, "Well, tell me about it,
what's going on in your life? Why are you so sad?" -
17:17 - 17:21And they start to tell you about all their troubles, you know,
-
17:21 - 17:24"Well, I'm having a real hard time with my wife."
-
17:24 - 17:27Or, "I'm having a real hard time raising my kids."
-
17:27 - 17:30Or, "I'm having a real hard time at work."
-
17:30 - 17:33Or, "Nobody likes me at school."
-
17:33 - 17:35Or, "I don't have any money."
-
17:35 - 17:39They mention all these smaller things that really are not the main problem.
-
17:39 - 17:45The main problem is this: Do you know God?
-
17:45 - 17:48because the end of that verse says, "Let him who boasts boast in this,
-
17:48 - 17:53that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD."
-
17:53 - 17:59If you know God, you have the greatest treasure that anybody could have.
-
17:59 - 18:03Some people in this room know God.
-
18:03 - 18:08Do you know God? Has God ever visited you?
-
18:08 - 18:12Well that's what He came to do. (P)
-
18:12 - 18:18I had a friend when I was a little boy; I can remember I was in 6th Grade.
-
18:18 - 18:21And this friend, I don't know if he was a true Christian or not,
-
18:21 - 18:26I was not a Christian at the time;
but even though I wasn't saved, he stood out to me. -
18:26 - 18:29He would always wear these Christian t-shirts to school.
-
18:29 - 18:34I went to public school, and in 6th Grade nobody wore Christian t-shirts to school.
-
18:34 - 18:38I can remember he had one shirt on, that had a little heartbeat monitor,
-
18:38 - 18:42you know, like at the hospital you see the little blip on the heart screen.
-
18:42 - 18:46It had a heartbeat, and it was like flat, and then it started beating again.
-
18:46 - 18:50And it said "Christ alive," like He died and rose again.
-
18:50 - 18:52And he would wear shirts like that,
-
18:52 - 18:55and I remember I just thought, "He's so strange.
-
18:55 - 18:58Why is it always about God with that boy (his name is Timothy)?"
-
18:58 - 19:04And one day we were out on the playground, and there was a group of girls.
-
19:04 - 19:08Nobody liked Timothy, because he loved...
-
19:08 - 19:13well, he at least outwardly was wearing
these t-shirts, following God, whatever. -
19:13 - 19:14Nobody liked him.
-
19:14 - 19:18And I walked up and heard this group of girls mocking him.
-
19:18 - 19:22(We were all 6th graders). And this one girl started mocking him,
-
19:22 - 19:26she said, "Huh! Yeah, Timothy, he doesn't have any friends,
-
19:26 - 19:30only God is his friend. Only God is his friend."
-
19:30 - 19:32And all the girls laughed.
-
19:32 - 19:36And when they laughed, I recoiled on the inside. (P)
-
19:36 - 19:42Even as a lost boy, when I was only 12 years old, I knew that was wrong.
-
19:42 - 19:48To laugh about somebody having God as
their friend, that did not sit well with me. -
19:48 - 19:53If God is your friend, that's nothing to mock a person about.
-
19:53 - 19:56And I saw that as such a great sin, and it is!
-
19:56 - 20:03If you have God as your friend,
you're the most blessed person in the world. -
20:03 - 20:08Wouldn't you trade anything you have to have God as your friend?
-
20:08 - 20:10Wouldn't that be worth anything?
-
20:10 - 20:14Abraham, in the Bible it said he was the friend of God.
-
20:14 - 20:16He was God's friend.
-
20:16 - 20:18Moses, it said he was the friend of God.
-
20:18 - 20:22God talked with him like friend to friend, face to face.
-
20:22 - 20:25Isn't that what you want in life?
-
20:25 - 20:29Or are you still boasting in all the other things?
-
20:29 - 20:35Are you still placing your treasure in all the
other realms of pleasure and satisfaction? -
20:35 - 20:41That's not where it's found. We need to be visited by God. (P)
-
20:41 - 20:47Okay next phrase, Luke 1: 68, "He has visited us
-
20:47 - 20:53(or, He's about to, He's right on the verge of breaking in to our world),
-
20:53 - 20:58He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people."
-
20:58 - 21:03Accomplished redemption. This is good news.
-
21:03 - 21:06Why is it good news? What does redemption mean?
-
21:06 - 21:11You guys remember, few weeks ago
Joseph was here, he was teaching on this. -
21:11 - 21:13Redemption: what does redemption mean?
-
21:13 - 21:21Somebody want to volunteer and answer? What is redemption?
-
21:23 - 21:27[Audience]: Redemption is the recovery of something taken. (P)
-
21:27 - 21:31Recovery of something taken; yeah, you could put it like that.
-
21:31 - 21:34Think about it like this: redeem.
-
21:34 - 21:37Sometimes we don't use the word 'redemption' outside of church,
-
21:37 - 21:39but we use the word 'redeem'.
-
21:39 - 21:43Like if you get a coupon, or you get some prize or something,
-
21:43 - 21:44you're going to redeem it.
-
21:44 - 21:47So you're going to get something that you didn't have.
-
21:47 - 21:53But, specifically, when you really want to
talk about redemption and redeem, -
21:53 - 21:59it revolves around a price, like a ransom;
-
21:59 - 22:07a price that is paid to get something, to set something free, to get something back.
-
22:07 - 22:12Something that was lost, or something that was enslaved, you get it back.
-
22:12 - 22:15So if someone is in slavery you can redeem them out of slavery,
-
22:15 - 22:16you can buy them out of slavery.
-
22:16 - 22:23If you were a slave, wouldn't it be nice if someone
came along and paid the money for you to go free? -
22:23 - 22:26That's what redemption is.
-
22:26 - 22:29Someone that's in bondage, being brought out of that.
-
22:29 - 22:32A price has been paid for them, now they're free.
-
22:32 - 22:37And even more than that, now they have a new owner. (P)
-
22:37 - 22:41So, here it says, "God has accomplished redemption.
-
22:41 - 22:45God has visited us and has accomplished redemption."
-
22:45 - 22:50God has come to set people free.
-
22:50 - 22:59This is the truth that you find in the Bible,
that men owe a great debt and are in bondage. -
22:59 - 23:01They're debtors.
-
23:01 - 23:09We sing songs about this: "A debtor to mercy alone"
- like I'm a debtor. I owe God. -
23:09 - 23:11What do we owe God? Do we owe God money?
-
23:11 - 23:13It's not like a money debt.
-
23:13 - 23:16It has to do with the way we've lived our life.
-
23:16 - 23:19Because of sin we owe a debt to God.
-
23:19 - 23:22We ought to have lived righteously, but we're in the bondage of sin,
-
23:22 - 23:26and we're under sin's curse and its guilt.
-
23:26 - 23:30Now here's the question: If someone is a slave to sin,
-
23:30 - 23:35or if someone is guilty because of their sin and they're a debtor,
-
23:35 - 23:38can they pay the price?
-
23:38 - 23:44Can you pay the price to God, pay off your debts?
-
23:44 - 23:47Sometimes people talk that way, you know, "I'm just gonna straighten up.
-
23:47 - 23:52I'm gonna turn over a new leaf,
gonna live a new life, gonna pay off my debts." -
23:52 - 23:54There's a big problem in the Bible.
-
23:54 - 23:58The Bible's problem is this: you cannot pay off your debts.
-
23:58 - 24:00You don't have any ability to.
-
24:00 - 24:06Imagine owing millions and millions of dollars,
-
24:06 - 24:10and you make minimum wage, how are you going to pay that off?
-
24:10 - 24:13Some people will get credit cards and they'll just rack up debt,
-
24:13 - 24:19huge amounts of debt (they have no way to get out of debt).
-
24:19 - 24:26But spiritually speaking, every person is born that way in such a huge pile of debt.
-
24:26 - 24:28They can't get themselves out. (P)
-
24:28 - 24:40Let's look at a verse on this, Psalms 49:7-9,
-
24:40 - 24:50"No man can by any means redeem his brother
or give to God a ransom for him-- -
24:50 - 24:55for the redemption of his soul is costly,
and he should cease trying forever-- -
24:55 - 24:59that he should live on eternally, that he should not undergo decay."
-
24:59 - 25:04You hear what it's saying? Nobody can pay your debts before God.
-
25:04 - 25:06And you can't pay your own debt.
-
25:06 - 25:11And you might as well just give up--he should cease trying forever.
-
25:11 - 25:14It's too costly. It's too expensive.
-
25:14 - 25:21You'll never be able to pull yourself out of the mess, out of the pit.
-
25:21 - 25:23The problem is, we've sinned against God--
-
25:23 - 25:27sinned against Him so much and in such a vile way--
-
25:27 - 25:35that no amount of trying or doing good works
will ever erase the problem or pay off the debt. -
25:35 - 25:37Just give up. (P)
-
25:37 - 25:42You say, "What then, I don't have any hope?
I just give up and that's it, that's the end?" -
25:42 - 25:48Well, no, because this verse says He has accomplished redemption.
-
25:48 - 25:51God can pay off your debts.
-
25:51 - 25:54That's real good news - God can forgive our debts.
-
25:54 - 25:58That's even in the Lord's Prayer, isn't it?
-
25:58 - 26:01It's really good if you've got some rich uncle
-
26:01 - 26:06that can just come in and pay off all your debts with one stroke.
-
26:06 - 26:07God can do that.
-
26:07 - 26:11No other man can do that--in this life there's no friend,
-
26:11 - 26:15there's no priest, there's no uncle, there's no politician,
-
26:15 - 26:19no president or king, that can save you.
-
26:19 - 26:23But if God acts, there's nothing God cannot do.
-
26:23 - 26:28He can accomplish redemption.
-
26:28 - 26:30Only God can save.
-
26:30 - 26:33Only God can set a person free.
-
26:33 - 26:39Only God can pay the price to save your soul. He is the Savior.
-
26:39 - 26:43He's not going to let you save yourself, because then you'd boast.
-
26:43 - 26:47He's not going to let anybody else save you, because then you'd praise them.
-
26:47 - 26:50He is going to save you, so that you'll praise Him alone.
-
26:50 - 26:53He's going to be the One. He'll be the Champion.
-
26:53 - 26:57He'll be the Savior. (P)
-
26:57 - 27:01Let's look at the next verse, jump down to Luke 1:71,
-
27:01 - 27:05"Salvation from our enemies." Good news!
-
27:05 - 27:10The Kingdom of God has come; God is visiting us; He is here;
-
27:10 - 27:13He is paying off our debts; He is accomplishing redemption;
-
27:13 - 27:17He is saving us from our enemies. What does that mean?
-
27:17 - 27:22Salvation from our enemies - okay, question,
who are the enemies in this world? -
27:22 - 27:26What kinds of enemies exist in this life?
-
27:26 - 27:28You guys want to give some answers?
-
27:28 - 27:30What are some examples of an enemy? (P)
-
27:30 - 27:31Audience: Satan? (P)
-
27:31 - 27:34Satan. Well, that's the one; we'll talk about that.
-
27:34 - 27:42What about just in the normal life, not in the spiritual realm? (P)
-
27:42 - 27:44Audience: Riches? (P)
-
27:44 - 27:47Yeah, riches are kind of like an enemy,
they can work against you in a way. -
27:47 - 27:53But what about people? Does anybody have any enemies here,
-
27:53 - 27:58or does everybody love you and everybody is your friend or just a stranger?
-
27:58 - 28:02Or do you actually have people that are out for your harm?
-
28:02 - 28:06You have people like that? Who are they?
-
28:06 - 28:10Some people have a lot more enemies than other people.
-
28:10 - 28:16What are some enemies in this life? [Pause].
-
28:16 - 28:20You guys just must be really well liked. (P)
-
28:20 - 28:21Audience: Terrorists? (P)
-
28:21 - 28:24Okay, terrorists, there's an enemy.
-
28:24 - 28:29On a national level you've got people from a
different country, different set of beliefs, -
28:29 - 28:37and they're out to do harm against a group of people,
maybe America or some other country. -
28:37 - 28:40They're out to do harm, they're out to blow people up.
-
28:40 - 28:42That's an enemy.
-
28:42 - 28:45In the time of war... you see, right now we're in a time of peace,
-
28:45 - 28:52in terms of nobody is invading our country; it's not like World War II.
-
28:52 - 28:58But if you lived few decades ago,
you could real quickly start spouting off some enemies: -
28:58 - 29:01"Well, this country, these soldiers, this general;
-
29:01 - 29:04they're our enemies, they're trying to kill us."
-
29:04 - 29:07But it doesn't have to be a man with a gun,
-
29:07 - 29:12sometimes you just have people that have a grudge against you.
-
29:12 - 29:14And it's like, that guy at work, he just does not like you.
-
29:14 - 29:17You guys heard Brother Matt talking about this the other day.
-
29:17 - 29:21He had a guy at work, who just didn't like Matt,
-
29:21 - 29:24who just was against him, always trying to cut him down.
-
29:24 - 29:28Or maybe even in your family you can have enemies.
-
29:28 - 29:31Your own family can turn against you.
-
29:31 - 29:34People on the street - you see some guy and he threatens you,
-
29:34 - 29:37and he says, "The next time I see you, I'm going to knock your lights out."
-
29:37 - 29:40You're going to get terrified: "I've got an enemy!" (P)
-
29:40 - 29:46I can remember in high school one time, a guy
grabbed me by the collar of my shirt after Gym class, -
29:46 - 29:49pushed me up against a wall, with his three buddies around me
-
29:49 - 29:53(they're all Seniors; I was this tiny Sophomore),
-
29:53 - 29:56and I just realized, "I've got enemies."
-
29:56 - 29:59It came out of nowhere.
-
29:59 - 30:03But here's the thing: Even the worst enemies in this life -
-
30:03 - 30:10the guys with guns, the people that have strength in numbers,
-
30:10 - 30:12the people that can work against you -
-
30:12 - 30:18that's nothing, compared to the real enemy that the Bible talks about:
-
30:18 - 30:23and the Brother said it - Satan. The devil. (P)
-
30:23 - 30:26You know anything about the devil?
-
30:26 - 30:32The devil is real. Satan is real.
-
30:32 - 30:41He's not just a force, he's a being, a fallen angel.
-
30:41 - 30:43And he's powerful.
-
30:43 - 30:47And the Bible says the whole world is in the hand of the devil.
-
30:47 - 30:53Can you imagine that? "Does the Bible really say that?
I thought the whole world was in God's hand." -
30:53 - 30:58Well it is, including the devil. Every thing is in God's hand.
-
30:58 - 31:03But this world, (not the heavens, the heavens belong to the Lord),
-
31:03 - 31:06but this earth He has given to the sons of men,
-
31:06 - 31:09and the devil is ruling over it.
-
31:09 - 31:16Like a master chess player, he moves people in place
to do his will, to do great evil in the world. -
31:16 - 31:19Have you seen the evil that is in the world yet,
-
31:19 - 31:23or do you still think the world is just kind of a nice place? It's not.
-
31:23 - 31:28This world is under the power of darkness.
-
31:28 - 31:33The devil, and demons, and powers, and principalities, they are at work.
-
31:33 - 31:38It says that "they waged war in heaven, and God cast them down to the earth;
-
31:38 - 31:43and woe to the earth, because now the devil has come down to the earth,
-
31:43 - 31:47and he knows his time is short, and his wrath is great" (Revelation 12).
-
31:47 - 31:50And he wants to destroy people. (P)
-
31:50 - 31:55The devil, what is he trying to do? why does he want to destroy your soul?
-
31:55 - 31:59why does he want you to go to hell? why does he care about that?
-
31:59 - 32:01It's not about you, it's about God.
-
32:01 - 32:03The devil hates God.
-
32:03 - 32:05And you were made in the image of God.
-
32:05 - 32:09And your soul is valuable to God and precious to God.
-
32:09 - 32:15And the devil is gonna just, in rage, make war against the people of God.
-
32:15 - 32:21And if someone is not a Christian, they're locked up in the devil's power;
-
32:21 - 32:23and that's their greatest enemy.
-
32:23 - 32:28Whether they realize it or not, the greatest enemy of their soul is Satan.
-
32:28 - 32:34And he will tempt them, and he will lie to them,
and he will try to deceive them. -
32:34 - 32:40And he has many weapons - he will even try to kill them
if God lets him, if God allows him. (P) -
32:40 - 32:44In Revelation, talking about these demonic powers,
-
32:44 - 32:49it says, "In their tail was the power of death."
-
32:49 - 32:52The devil, he is seeking to wipe people out.
-
32:52 - 32:58This is the enemy of our souls.
-
32:58 - 33:01God is not our enemy; at least He ought not be.
-
33:01 - 33:05We make Him our enemy. We make war with God.
-
33:05 - 33:09But we really do have an enemy - the devil.
-
33:09 - 33:14And even when you become a Christian,
he's not gonna just change his mind. -
33:14 - 33:17He is out to destroy. (P)
-
33:17 - 33:25But, good news! "Salvation from our enemies." Saved from the devil.
-
33:25 - 33:30Maybe you realize the devil is at work in your life, do you want to be free?
-
33:30 - 33:34Do you want to be outside of his control?
-
33:34 - 33:36Do you want to be saved? It's possible!
-
33:36 - 33:40God promised in the very beginning, even to Adam and Eve,
-
33:40 - 33:42even when they sinned and were cast out of the garden,
-
33:42 - 33:47God said, "I'm going to crush the serpent's head.
-
33:47 - 33:51The seed of the woman, the serpent will bruise his heel,
-
33:51 - 33:54but he is going to crush the serpent's head."
-
33:54 - 33:57God promised from the beginning that the devil would be crushed.
-
33:57 - 34:02Salvation from our enemies. (P)
-
34:02 - 34:07There's strange stories about the devil and demons.
-
34:07 - 34:10Actually I was just talking the other day with a brother about this.
-
34:10 - 34:15There's a missionary in China, when he would
go and preach the Gospel to people, -
34:15 - 34:19they would say, "Oh great! Praise the Lord,
we want to follow Christ and become Christians." -
34:19 - 34:24They would become Christians, at least outwardly,
and then you know what happened? -
34:24 - 34:31As soon as they became Christians and stopped
worshiping the idols and false gods in China, -
34:31 - 34:35some of their family members would get sick, or die,
-
34:35 - 34:40or things would just start going wrong -
demonic problems started in their home. -
34:40 - 34:43And they said, "Woah! We didn't know it was like this.
-
34:43 - 34:45If this is gonna happen forget it, I don't want to be a Christian.
-
34:45 - 34:47I'll just go back to worshiping the idols.
-
34:47 - 34:53We'll put the idols back on the shelf,
we'll put the food out at night for the idols." -
34:53 - 34:55They are appeasing the spirits.
-
34:55 - 34:59The devil was after them, he did not want them to follow Jesus Christ,
-
34:59 - 35:03and he turned up the heat when they started to believe,
-
35:03 - 35:07when they started to throw away the idols. (P)
-
35:07 - 35:13There is a lady in Japan, when she started getting around Christians,
-
35:13 - 35:16all these demonic stuff started happening in her life.
-
35:16 - 35:20She would lay on her bed, and her bed would be shaking.
-
35:20 - 35:23There's nobody in the room, but her bed would start shaking.
-
35:23 - 35:26She was terrified, asking the Christians for help, "Help me!
-
35:26 - 35:29There's some kind of evil spirit in my house."
-
35:29 - 35:33The devil is an enemy of Christians and the Gospel.
-
35:33 - 35:35He does not want people to be saved.
-
35:35 - 35:37He does not want people to become Christians.
-
35:37 - 35:40But you know what his greatest weapon is?
-
35:40 - 35:42It's not somebody getting sick.
-
35:42 - 35:44It's not your bed starts shaking.
-
35:44 - 35:47You know what his greatest weapon is against souls?
-
35:47 - 35:51What's the way that he attacks?
What's the way that he actually destroys people? -
35:51 - 35:52It's through sin. (P)
-
35:52 - 35:57He does use lies, but let me say it like this,
-
35:57 - 36:02and actually Brother Tim was saying this the other day:
-
36:02 - 36:06Can the devil destroy your soul in hell? No.
-
36:06 - 36:11The devil himself is going to hell, God is going to
put the devil in hell, in the lake of fire. -
36:11 - 36:15The devil is not the king of hell.
-
36:15 - 36:21But what is it that causes a person to perish
and to be judged and to go the lake of fire? -
36:21 - 36:22It's sin.
-
36:22 - 36:24And the devil is going to tempt you to sin,
-
36:24 - 36:29and then he's going to try to keep you away from
Jesus Christ so you don't get forgiveness. -
36:29 - 36:32That's his objective.
-
36:32 - 36:36"I don't care if they go to church, I don't care if they do a lot of things,
-
36:36 - 36:37I don't care if a Bible is in their house."
-
36:37 - 36:39He's not afraid of holy water.
-
36:39 - 36:42All those things that people say or you see in the movies, that doesn't matter.
-
36:42 - 36:47The only thing he cares about is, he doesn't want you to be forgiven,
-
36:47 - 36:51he doesn't want you to repent and believe in Jesus Christ.
-
36:51 - 36:56And he's going to try as hard as he can to just
keep throwing sin into your life, keep you guilty, -
36:56 - 36:59keep you on the road to hell. (P)
-
36:59 - 37:06But there's salvation from him if you want to be free.
-
37:06 - 37:07Do you want freed?
-
37:07 - 37:10Some people think they can bargain with the devil.
-
37:10 - 37:15Some people think they can come out ahead by serving the devil.
-
37:15 - 37:19The devil doesn't have any allies - he doesn't make any friends.
-
37:19 - 37:24C. S. Lewis said, "The devil breaks all of his tools when he's done using them."
-
37:24 - 37:26It's true.
-
37:26 - 37:31I remember when I was a young boy I used to have these nightmares.
-
37:31 - 37:36And I had a nightmare one time it was terrifying.
-
37:36 - 37:41I felt so disturbed when I woke up, do you want to know why?
-
37:41 - 37:48Because in that nightmare, this time when the evil monster was coming at me,
-
37:48 - 37:53I made a deal with the monster that I would serve him
-
37:53 - 37:58and kill other people alongside of him, so that he wouldn't kill me.
-
37:58 - 38:02You can't make deals with the devil like that.
-
38:02 - 38:06If you serve the devil, you're going to be judged right along with him.
-
38:06 - 38:09You don't want him as a master.
-
38:09 - 38:12The world is not your friend.
-
38:12 - 38:19You've got to get free from the power of Satan. And you can. (P)
-
38:19 - 38:22Alright, the next phrase,
-
38:22 - 38:31Luke 1:73, "The oath which He swore to Abraham our father."
-
38:31 - 38:34It says that God is going to have mercy,
He is going to remember His holy covenant, -
38:34 - 38:39and He's going to remember the oath
which He swore to Abraham our father. -
38:39 - 38:44What is this? Who is Abraham? What's so special about Abraham?
-
38:44 - 38:46What's the oath to Abraham? Anybody?
-
38:46 - 38:52What oath or what promise did God make with Abraham? (P)
-
38:52 - 38:54Audience: "In you shall all the nations be blessed." (P)
-
38:54 - 38:59"That all the nations will be blessed in you.
-
38:59 - 39:02Through your seed, I will bless all the nations.
-
39:02 - 39:07The whole world will be blessed through your seed."
-
39:07 - 39:12And now, right at the beginning in the New Testament, they say, "It's here!
-
39:12 - 39:15It's finally coming to pass.
-
39:15 - 39:19What we've been waiting for, that promise
that God made so long ago to Abraham, -
39:19 - 39:24is finally coming true - the whole world is about to be blessed."
-
39:24 - 39:25Now what is that about?
-
39:25 - 39:30God made promises to lots of people,
why does everybody always talk about Abraham? -
39:30 - 39:31Have you figured that out yet?
-
39:31 - 39:36It's kind of strange; anytime the people would
get in trouble in the Old Testament, -
39:36 - 39:39they would cry out, "O Lord, remember Your promise to Abraham.
-
39:39 - 39:43Remember Your mercy and what You swore to do to Abraham."
-
39:43 - 39:48They were always going back to that promise that God made.
-
39:48 - 39:52They didn't say, "O Lord, remember the Law that You gave to Moses."
-
39:52 - 39:57That's not really a happy subject; the Law of Moses can't save you.
-
39:57 - 39:58They didn't cry out about that. (P)
-
39:58 - 40:06But God made a promise to Abraham that was
100 percent grace, 100 percent promise. -
40:06 - 40:08There wasn't any stipulation on it, He just said,
-
40:08 - 40:13"I'm going to bless the world through your seed, through your descendant."
-
40:13 - 40:15And it was true.
-
40:15 - 40:18The curse that began with Adam and Eve, Adam and Eve sinned;
-
40:18 - 40:21and the curse spread to the whole world.
-
40:21 - 40:24Everybody is guilty because of Adam and Eve.
-
40:24 - 40:26You may not like that, but it is true.
-
40:26 - 40:29You may not like the fact that you're born with a heart of sin.
-
40:29 - 40:33You say, "That's not fair! I want to be born with a heart of righteousness."
-
40:33 - 40:36I'm sorry, that's not true. You were born with a heart of sin.
-
40:36 - 40:42Because of Adam and Eve's guilt and transgression,
death has spread into all the world, -
40:42 - 40:46the curse to every nation, the curse to all peoples.
-
40:46 - 40:52But then with Abraham, God said, "But, through your seed,
-
40:52 - 40:56I'm going to bless every nation, I'm going to bless the world."
-
40:56 - 41:01What was lost with Adam and Eve is going to be gained again.
-
41:01 - 41:07What was broken and destroyed there, is going to be restored.
-
41:07 - 41:10The blessing to the whole world;
-
41:10 - 41:18the return to the Garden of Eden; the return to Paradise;
-
41:18 - 41:26all of the promises coming true, coming to pass. (P)
-
41:28 - 41:41Alright, Luke 1:74, "To grant us that we,
being rescued from the hand of our enemies, -
41:41 - 41:46might serve Him without fear."
-
41:46 - 41:48To grant us that we might serve Him.
-
41:48 - 41:56Now here's a question: Why does God save people?
-
41:56 - 41:59Why not just wipe them all out in the flood?
-
41:59 - 42:03Why not don't send Christ, don't send a Savior;
-
42:03 - 42:07and just let them go on and sin, judgment day comes, and it's over -
-
42:07 - 42:12Christ comes to judge the earth, and everybody is destroyed.
-
42:12 - 42:16Why not do that? Why does He save people?
-
42:16 - 42:18Well you could give a lot of different answers.
-
42:18 - 42:24You could say, "Because He is loving. Because He's going to glorify Himself."
-
42:24 - 42:26But you know what this verse says?
-
42:26 - 42:30It says He is doing this, He is fulfilling all of this -
-
42:30 - 42:36setting us free from Satan, redeeming us from our sins and our debts -
-
42:36 - 42:38that we might serve Him.
-
42:38 - 42:43Do you serve God with your life? (P)
-
42:43 - 42:45Now I want to clear something up.
-
42:45 - 42:48A lot of people say, "We're saved to serve."
-
42:48 - 42:50You guys ever heard that? "We're saved to serve."
-
42:50 - 42:52In the Baptist church it's kind of a slogan.
-
42:52 - 42:54I grew up hearing that and I didn't really like it.
-
42:54 - 42:58When I began to read the Bible I thought, "That's kind of cheesy."
-
42:58 - 43:02Why? This is why, this is my problem with that:
-
43:02 - 43:07In a way we are saved to serve, but it depends on what you mean.
-
43:07 - 43:10God doesn't need any service. God is not weak.
-
43:10 - 43:14He is not served by human hands.
If He was hungry, He wouldn't tell you about it. -
43:14 - 43:16That's what the Bible says.
-
43:16 - 43:19He doesn't need anything from you.
-
43:19 - 43:22It's not like church and Christianity just means you go somewhere
-
43:22 - 43:25and you're trying to help God or do Him a favor.
-
43:25 - 43:27God doesn't need any favors.
-
43:27 - 43:32He is just fine on His own in who He is.
-
43:32 - 43:37God is not lonely, God is not sick, God is not weak, He is not sad.
-
43:37 - 43:39He is full of joy, full of life.
-
43:39 - 43:42He is the source of life. He is the source of love.
-
43:42 - 43:47And before this world even existed, that's the way He was.
-
43:47 - 43:49So God is not served by human hands.
-
43:49 - 43:51But what does it mean to serve God?
-
43:51 - 43:54Well, another way that you can talk about service in the Bible,
-
43:54 - 43:59many times in the Bible when we read the word 'serve' or 'service',
-
43:59 - 44:03it's the same word, the same idea, as worship.
-
44:03 - 44:05That we might worship Him. (P)
-
44:05 - 44:07To serve God.
-
44:07 - 44:11If someone is serving the Lord, if someone
wants to be in the service of the Lord, -
44:11 - 44:15a big part of what that means - it doesn't mean they're helping God out -
-
44:15 - 44:17it means they're worshiping Him.
-
44:17 - 44:22They are giving Him glory: "Lord, You're wonderful.
-
44:22 - 44:25God, You're beautiful.
-
44:25 - 44:31Lord, I praise You, I love You, I delight in You."
-
44:31 - 44:35Do you do that? Does God make you happy?
-
44:35 - 44:37Does God fill your soul with joy?
-
44:37 - 44:40Do you just want to praise Him? Do you sing?
-
44:40 - 44:43I know a lot of people, they go to church, they never sing.
-
44:43 - 44:45They never open their mouth at all.
-
44:45 - 44:47Like, "I'll just sit here, everybody else will sing."
-
44:47 - 44:50That's not what the Bible says.
-
44:50 - 44:54The Bible says, "Let every thing that has breath praise the Lord."
-
44:54 - 44:57Some people are too ashamed, they don't want to open their mouth.
-
44:57 - 44:59And their life is not even about that -
-
44:59 - 45:02"That's not why I'm alive. That's not why I'm doing what I'm doing."
-
45:02 - 45:04What are they doing, they're living for themselves.
-
45:04 - 45:10They worship themselves, they worship their car, they worship the sports stars.
-
45:10 - 45:14They worship all these other little gods that are no gods at all. (P)
-
45:14 - 45:19But the reason why God saves people
is because He wants to catch them up -
45:19 - 45:23and involve them in this worship of Himself.
-
45:23 - 45:27What is heaven all about? Heaven is about worshiping God.
-
45:27 - 45:36In heaven, even right now as we speak, there are
myriads and myriads of angels worshiping God, -
45:36 - 45:41praising God with loud voices that shake the temple (they're so loud).
-
45:41 - 45:46And they never cease, day and night, to say, "Holy, holy, holy."
-
45:46 - 45:48They don't grow tired of worshiping God.
-
45:48 - 45:53That's their life, that's their joy - it's to worship Him.
-
45:53 - 45:57It's like Keith Green said, "If you don't learn to worship God now,
-
45:57 - 45:59why would you even want to go to heaven?"
-
45:59 - 46:05That's what heaven is all about - to worship the Lord.
-
46:05 - 46:09We were made to worship Him. This is why God made you. (P)
-
46:09 - 46:15The greatest sin in life is not murder, or adultery,
-
46:15 - 46:20or all of these other sins, child abuse or whatever;
-
46:20 - 46:26it's not the great wars that happen when people
sweep through villages and kill thousands of people -
46:26 - 46:28because of the color of their skin, or their tribe,
-
46:28 - 46:30or the language they speak.
-
46:30 - 46:32That's not the greatest sin.
-
46:32 - 46:36The greatest sin is when man, who is made in the image of God,
-
46:36 - 46:42who has such faculties and abilities and powers and gifts and talents,
-
46:42 - 46:47they look up at the sky, they see the sun, the moon,
and the stars - the works of God's hands - -
46:47 - 46:50and they don't praise Him, they don't worship Him, they don't love Him.
-
46:50 - 46:52They don't even search for Him!
-
46:52 - 46:53They don't even seek for Him!
-
46:53 - 46:57They're not even interested in knowing God. That's the greatest sin.
-
46:57 - 47:01The greatest sin, the thing that offends God the most,
-
47:01 - 47:04that the heavens are appalled at when they see,
-
47:04 - 47:08is they can watch a world with no worship.
-
47:08 - 47:11Does it ever strike you as strange, you walk down the streets
-
47:11 - 47:15and people are just going about their day, going through the rat race,
-
47:15 - 47:18going to work, paying the bills, eating dinner, watching TV.
-
47:18 - 47:21It's just like life moves on and there's no purpose.
-
47:21 - 47:25What has happened to the world?
-
47:25 - 47:34Worship - the reason why we were made - has disappeared. (P)
-
47:34 - 47:41Heaven is a place where all the beings that are there, are in the presence of God.
-
47:41 - 47:45And they see Him, and they know Him,
-
47:45 - 47:52and they commune with Him, spend time with Him, and they love Him.
-
47:52 - 48:00The way one Puritan said it, he said that
heaven is a world of love - love to God. (P) -
48:00 - 48:02What does Islam say heaven is?
-
48:02 - 48:05"Heaven is paradise, where you get all the good food,
-
48:05 - 48:08all of the sweet drinks, and women."
-
48:08 - 48:11That's what they teach. That's what is written in the Quran.
-
48:11 - 48:13Is that why you want to go to heaven?
-
48:13 - 48:15Is that your idea of heaven?
-
48:15 - 48:20That's not the Bible's idea of heaven. (P)
-
48:20 - 48:23Heaven is not about sports.
-
48:23 - 48:29I say that because I actually thought about that when I was a kid.
-
48:29 - 48:34I thought about going to heaven, and I thought, "If it's to last forever
-
48:34 - 48:37(I was lost, I didn't know any better),
-
48:37 - 48:40how could it be any fun at all?"
-
48:40 - 48:42And you know what I came up with?
-
48:42 - 48:44Now I loved sports as a kid;
-
48:44 - 48:47I thought they were great, but I was terrible at sports.
-
48:47 - 48:54And I thought, "Maybe in heaven God will
make a sport that kind of suits every person, -
48:54 - 48:57and one person will be the best at their sport."
-
48:57 - 49:01Like, "God is really smart, so He can just
make a bunch of different kinds of sports. -
49:01 - 49:06And maybe He can make one for me
that I'm the best at, and I'll be the champion." -
49:06 - 49:08That was what I thought as a kid.
-
49:08 - 49:13What is that saying? I worship myself. (P)
-
49:13 - 49:19What is your idea of heaven?
-
49:19 - 49:27He saves us that we might serve Him, that we might worship Him;
-
49:27 - 49:28and that we might serve Him without fear.
-
49:28 - 49:35Look at Verse 74 again, these two little words "without fear."
-
49:35 - 49:37Without fear - what does that mean?
-
49:37 - 49:41Well it's true, without fear from our enemies, because He said that.
-
49:41 - 49:43"Salvation from the hands of those who hate us."
-
49:43 - 49:48The devil hates you; but God can save you from that, protect you from him.
-
49:48 - 49:50But it's talking about something else, too.
-
49:50 - 49:53We can worship the Lord with no fear.
-
49:53 - 49:56We're not afraid He's going to put us in hell anymore.
-
49:56 - 49:58We're not afraid He's going to cast us out anymore.
-
49:58 - 50:01We're not afraid He's going to slap us around.
-
50:01 - 50:05Some fathers on earth, that's how they treat
their children, they slap them around. -
50:05 - 50:09The heavenly Father is not like that.
-
50:09 - 50:10He is a good Father.
-
50:10 - 50:15And when you come to know Him,
when your debts are paid, when you're set free, -
50:15 - 50:18you can worship God and you don't have to be afraid of Him at all.
-
50:18 - 50:24In a word, it's peace. To have real peace.
-
50:24 - 50:30Do you have any peace in your life? Do you know peace? (P)
-
50:30 - 50:34Now be careful, there's two kinds of peace.
-
50:34 - 50:36There's God's peace and the world's peace.
-
50:36 - 50:38I'm not talking about the world's peace.
-
50:38 - 50:42Jesus says, "My peace I give to you; My peace I leave with you;
-
50:42 - 50:44not as the world gives do I give to you."
-
50:44 - 50:49The world will give you a kind of peace. That's not the kind you want.
-
50:49 - 50:50It's a deceitful kind of peace.
-
50:50 - 50:53It's not true peace, it's a false peace.
-
50:53 - 51:00In the Old Testament, the prophet said, "They go around
saying, 'Peace, peace,' and there is no peace." -
51:00 - 51:02They deceived the people, they tricked the people.
-
51:02 - 51:04They tell them there's peace but there is no peace.
-
51:04 - 51:10The Bible says "there's no peace for the wicked, no rest for the wicked."
-
51:10 - 51:12The world, where does it get its peace from?
-
51:12 - 51:16When everything is going right; when money is in the bank;
-
51:16 - 51:18when their checkbook is balanced;
-
51:18 - 51:24when all your kids are at home and everything is
going well between husband and spouse; -
51:24 - 51:27and everybody likes you and you're still young and beautiful;
-
51:27 - 51:29then you feel peace.
-
51:29 - 51:34"I'm making the grades, everything is going just fine.
-
51:34 - 51:37It's like the world is my spinning top." (P)
-
51:37 - 51:41But then what happens? The famine hits. The disaster occurs.
-
51:41 - 51:45The hammer falls. Your world comes crashing down.
-
51:45 - 51:49And all of a sudden you realize, "I don't have any peace.
-
51:49 - 51:51What was my peace in my life?
-
51:51 - 51:56I was trusting in all these things like a shaky stool that I was standing on."
-
51:56 - 51:58It's gonna fall.
-
51:58 - 52:02Your peace in this world will be stripped away from you.
-
52:02 - 52:05But a Christian has true peace.
-
52:05 - 52:09They don't have to have any fear anymore, they can rest.
-
52:09 - 52:13Peace comes from the Holy Spirit; joy and peace in believing;
-
52:13 - 52:17and you abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
-
52:17 - 52:22The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace.
-
52:22 - 52:25Do you have peace, Christian?
-
52:25 - 52:28Where does your peace come from?
Does your peace come from yourself? -
52:28 - 52:32Does your peace come from your pastor, or friends, or your church?
-
52:32 - 52:37Does your peace come from whether or not
you're surrounded by pleasant things? -
52:37 - 52:39That's not where peace comes from.
-
52:39 - 52:43Peace comes from Jesus Christ - He's the Prince of peace.
-
52:43 - 52:44He can take away all your fears.
-
52:44 - 52:50It's like being in the eye of the tornado,
all the winds just rushing around you, -
52:50 - 52:54everywhere you look is chaos and destruction;
-
52:54 - 52:57and it's just still, and peaceful. (P)
-
52:57 - 53:04A Christian is the one that can go through
all the trials in this life, and they're not afraid. -
53:04 - 53:09Their heart is at peace, stedfast, trusting in the Lord.
-
53:09 - 53:13The Christian is the one, like the child, you know, some stubborn child;
-
53:13 - 53:16you spank them, and they just smile.
-
53:16 - 53:20They don't want to cry, they don't want to let on that anything hurts them.
-
53:20 - 53:21The Christian is just like that.
-
53:21 - 53:26It doesn't matter how many times they get hit, they just keep smiling.
-
53:26 - 53:29The Christian is the one that can sing in the fire,
-
53:29 - 53:33that can sing when they're put in prison, like Paul and Silas.
-
53:33 - 53:38The Christian is the one, after they get beaten up they go home rejoicing.
-
53:38 - 53:43That's what we want, that's the peace that comes from God, right?
-
53:43 - 53:46That's our birthright. That's promised to us.
-
53:46 - 53:49We can worship the Lord and have no fear.
-
53:49 - 53:53If God is for you, who can be against you?
-
53:53 - 53:57It's amazing, we were kinda watching this testimony today,
-
53:57 - 54:02and there's been people that have been converted in terrible circumstances,
-
54:02 - 54:07with all kinds of enemies, and all kinds of wickedness all around them.
-
54:07 - 54:12But it's like when God is for you,
it doesn't matter if everybody hates you. (P) -
54:12 - 54:17Now think about this: Jesus brings peace,
but in another place He said this: -
54:17 - 54:20"Don't think that I came to bring peace on the earth."
-
54:20 - 54:24He's the Prince of peace; and then He says,
"Don't think that I came to bring peace on the earth." -
54:24 - 54:25What is He saying?
-
54:25 - 54:31He is saying this: In our relationships with other people, Christ brings division -
-
54:31 - 54:34"A man's enemies will be the members of his household.
-
54:34 - 54:36I didn't come to bring peace but a sword.
-
54:36 - 54:37I came to bring division" (Matt. 10:34-36).
-
54:37 - 54:41Sometimes when you become a Christian
everybody is going to turn against you, -
54:41 - 54:43all your friends are going to leave you,
-
54:43 - 54:47all your family is going to misunderstand you,
going to slander you, going to hate you; -
54:47 - 54:49the other people in the village are going to hate you,
-
54:49 - 54:52the other people in your work are going to hate you.
-
54:52 - 54:53That happens.
-
54:53 - 54:57But He does bring peace between man and God.
-
54:57 - 55:01He doesn't bring peace man-to-man, He brings peace man-to-God.
-
55:01 - 55:05And if your relationship is right with God vertically,
-
55:05 - 55:10then it doesn't matter what's going on around you horizontally.
-
55:10 - 55:14Do you have the peace that surpasses all understanding:
-
55:14 - 55:21Jesus Christ, forgiveness of sins, freedom from the devil?
-
55:21 - 55:25If you do you'll know it, you'll be so happy. (P)
-
55:25 - 55:31I mean, sometimes when you see a new Christian,
it's like they can't hardly contain their joy. -
55:31 - 55:37They're just bubbling over, just so thankful,
because they know that God loves them. -
55:37 - 55:43Now a lot of people say real cheaply, "Smile, God loves you; God loves you."
-
55:43 - 55:45And it's cheap.
-
55:45 - 55:51But when it's real, when you know it deep in your soul, "God loves me,"
-
55:51 - 55:58that will hold you through anything. To be loved by God. (P)
-
55:58 - 56:10Alright, next thing, Luke 1:76, "And you, child,
will be called the prophet of the Most High." -
56:10 - 56:19So now, picture this: John's dad, Zacharias,
his mouth has been opened, he got his voice back; -
56:19 - 56:24and he's praising God, full of joy, full of the Holy Spirit.
-
56:24 - 56:29And he picks up his baby boy, picks up his son,
-
56:29 - 56:35and he says, "You, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High."
-
56:35 - 56:37John was a prophet.
-
56:37 - 56:46And that's good news, because the Old Testament said
before the Savior comes, this one final messenger, -
56:46 - 56:51this one final prophet will come and prepare the way for Him.
-
56:51 - 56:56So now, everything is coming to pass,
Jesus is about to come into the world; -
56:56 - 57:01and here is His herald, here is His messenger, here is the prophet.
-
57:01 - 57:03And this is good news, why?
-
57:03 - 57:06Because he says this,
-
57:06 - 57:11Verse 77, "To give to His people the knowledge of
salvation by the forgiveness of their sins." -
57:11 - 57:15So he's going to go around preaching. John was a voice.
-
57:15 - 57:18John wasn't a lot of things, but one thing he was - he was a voice.
-
57:18 - 57:22He probably had a loud voice. He's out in the desert preaching;
-
57:22 - 57:25he was a voice: "Prepare the way of the Lord."
-
57:25 - 57:33And he was telling people about the knowledge of
salvation and the forgiveness of their sins. (P) -
57:33 - 57:35This is what you need to understand;
-
57:35 - 57:40this is the message of the Bible: You need to be saved!
-
57:40 - 57:45God made you, you sinned against God, you're under judgment.
-
57:45 - 57:48You need to be saved. You need to be forgiven of your sins.
-
57:48 - 57:52And that was John's job, to go around and preach to the people,
-
57:52 - 57:56and tell them, "Forgiveness of sins is available, it's possible,
-
57:56 - 58:01it's right around the corner. It's coming. You can be saved!"
-
58:01 - 58:04And I'm doing the same thing tonight.
-
58:04 - 58:08I'm telling you that if you are guilty, if you are a sinner,
-
58:08 - 58:11you can be saved, you can be forgiven.
-
58:11 - 58:14You don't have to be judged by God.
-
58:14 - 58:15You don't have to be dirty anymore.
-
58:15 - 58:17You don't have to be guilty anymore.
-
58:17 - 58:22Do you want to live a dirty life, a guilty life? Is that what you want?
-
58:22 - 58:26You don't have to be that way. You can be washed totally clean!
-
58:26 - 58:29You can be whiter than snow in God's sight.
-
58:29 - 58:31That's the message of the Bible.
-
58:31 - 58:35Every sin forgiven, not half of them forgiven.
-
58:35 - 58:39Every sin forgiven - the worst sins forgiven.
-
58:39 - 58:43That was his job and that's what he was doing.
-
58:43 - 58:45The forgiveness of sins. (P)
-
58:45 - 58:49Now listen, John wasn't the Savior though.
-
58:49 - 58:51And I'm not the Savior.
-
58:51 - 58:56And even your best friend, the person that is
witnessing to you and sharing the Gospel with you, -
58:56 - 58:58they're not the Savior.
-
58:58 - 58:59Who are we?
-
58:59 - 59:03We that know the Lord, that are speaking on behalf of the Lord,
-
59:03 - 59:08that are speaking from the Bible, we're only servants, only messengers.
-
59:08 - 59:10Man cannot save you, man cannot help you.
-
59:10 - 59:13There's no priest who can.
-
59:13 - 59:16You need God Himself.
-
59:16 - 59:19Even if you have a prophet, the prophet cannot save you.
-
59:19 - 59:22That's why Islam is totally false.
-
59:22 - 59:24I don't need a prophet.
-
59:24 - 59:27I mean, great, okay, somebody can tell me what God thinks.
-
59:27 - 59:31Alright I'm guilty; well, great, now I know what God thinks.
-
59:31 - 59:34I don't need a prophet, I need a Savior! (P)
-
59:34 - 59:39Imagine a man has fallen into a pit, and a guy comes to the edge of the pit.
-
59:39 - 59:43And he's down there 30 feet in the pit,
and the guy is telling him, "Hey, you're in a pit -
59:43 - 59:46and if you don't get out of here you're going to die."
-
59:46 - 59:49It's like, "Well thanks, throw me a rope, I need out of here!"
-
59:49 - 59:54I don't need someone to stand up on the
outside and give me advice, you know, -
59:54 - 59:59"Climb higher; try harder; try stepping on
that rock over there; dig your way out." -
59:59 - 60:01I don't need advice.
-
60:01 - 60:06I need someone to get down in the pit and boost me out.
-
60:06 - 60:07I need a Savior.
-
60:07 - 60:12I don't need good advice, I need forgiveness.
-
60:12 - 60:16I know I've already blown it; I know I'm not worthy to go to heaven.
-
60:16 - 60:19Is there anyone that can save?
-
60:19 - 60:25Is there anyone that can take the worst sinner
and forgive him, and make him totally clean? -
60:25 - 60:28There is.
-
60:28 - 60:31But it's not John, John was the prophet.
-
60:31 - 60:36Who do you need? Who can pay off your debts? Only God. (P)
-
60:36 - 60:41The prophet of whom? The prophet of the Most High.
-
60:41 - 60:42You read that?
-
60:42 - 60:50Look again, Verse 76, "You, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
-
60:50 - 60:58for you will go on before the - who? - the Lord to prepare His ways."
-
60:58 - 61:02Who is coming? Jesus.
-
61:02 - 61:05Who is Jesus? The Lord.
-
61:05 - 61:10"Prepare the way of the Lord. Make His paths straight."
-
61:10 - 61:13The King of glory; The King is coming.
-
61:13 - 61:19The Savior; God's Son; He who is one with God.
-
61:19 - 61:25The Son and the Father, there's no difference between Them.
-
61:25 - 61:29Jesus said, "Whoever sees Me sees the Father."
-
61:29 - 61:34In Their character, in Their essence, They are the same.
-
61:34 - 61:37The First Person of the Trinity; the Second Person of the Trinity;
-
61:37 - 61:41but They're the same. "I and the Father are one."
-
61:41 - 61:44God became flesh.
-
61:44 - 61:49The Word, who was God, became flesh.
-
61:49 - 61:51Who is coming to save?
-
61:51 - 61:53Who is the only person that can save this world?
-
61:53 - 61:56What's the only hope for this world?
-
61:56 - 61:58If God comes down.
-
61:58 - 62:03If God would come down and visit the earth, and become a Man,
-
62:03 - 62:06that's the only way people are going to get any help.
-
62:06 - 62:09And that's who He is - the Most High. (P)
-
62:09 - 62:14A few days after this, or I don't know how many months or whatever,
-
62:14 - 62:16just in the next chapter;
-
62:16 - 62:24(here in Luke 1, Zacharias is picking up his son John,
and he says, "You, child, will be called the prophet.") -
62:24 - 62:35But if you look over in chapter 2,
there's an old man, Simeon, a righteous man; -
62:35 - 62:39and something very similar happens to him.
-
62:39 - 62:44Luke 2:25 says, "There was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon;
-
62:44 - 62:49this was a righteous and devout man,
looking for the consolation of Israel; -
62:49 - 62:52and the Holy Spirit was upon him."
-
62:52 - 62:59And then it says this, "And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit
-
62:59 - 63:02that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
-
63:02 - 63:05And he came in the Spirit into the temple;
-
63:05 - 63:12and when the parents brought in the child Jesus,
to carry out for Him the custom of the Law, -
63:12 - 63:16then he took Him into his arms, and blessed God,
-
63:16 - 63:22and said, 'Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant
to depart in peace, according to Your word; -
63:22 - 63:28for my eyes have seen Your salvation.'"
-
63:28 - 63:34He picks up the baby, and he says,
"Lord, my eyes have seen Your salvation. -
63:34 - 63:35I have seen salvation."
-
63:35 - 63:39What was he looking at? he was looking at a baby!
-
63:39 - 63:44Salvation - who is the baby? Jesus Christ.
-
63:44 - 63:47Very different from John the baptist.
-
63:47 - 63:50John the baptist was picked up - "A prophet!"
-
63:50 - 63:55Jesus was picked up - "Salvation!" (P)
-
63:55 - 64:01Jesus is the Savior. He is the only One.
-
64:01 - 64:02Don't trust in people.
-
64:02 - 64:07Look, even if you have good Christians
around you that are trying to pray for you, -
64:07 - 64:13trying to be an example to you, trying to help you, they can't save you.
-
64:13 - 64:18You need God. You need the real medicine. (P)
-
64:18 - 64:22I heard a story one time; it's a true story I guess.
-
64:22 - 64:30A doctor was trying to help a sick man, a sick patient;
and the man wasn't real bright. -
64:30 - 64:33And the doctor wrote him a prescription, "Here's the medicine,"
-
64:33 - 64:35and he gave it to him; and the man took it home.
-
64:35 - 64:40A week later he came back, and the doctor said,
"Well, how did it work for you?" -
64:40 - 64:42The man said, "Well, I'm not any better at all."
-
64:42 - 64:47And he said, "Well, what's the problem? Did you take the prescription?"
-
64:47 - 64:51He said, "Yeah, I took it, and I ate that paper you gave to me."
-
64:51 - 64:55He ate the prescription.
-
64:55 - 65:01That's what it's like if you trust in your friends,
if you trust in some pastor; they are nobody. -
65:01 - 65:04All they can do is point to Jesus Christ.
-
65:04 - 65:07Don't look at me; the answer is not in me.
-
65:07 - 65:13Don't even look at the Bible itself: there's a way to read the Bible,
-
65:13 - 65:16and you're actually trusting in your own knowledge,
-
65:16 - 65:18and you're trusting in how well you know the Bible.
-
65:18 - 65:20That's not salvation.
-
65:20 - 65:23The Bible points you to Jesus Christ.
-
65:23 - 65:26A good preacher will point you to Jesus Christ.
-
65:26 - 65:29You need Jesus Christ.
-
65:29 - 65:32You have to come to Him and meet with Him.
-
65:32 - 65:38He came down to the earth, and He can save you. (P)
-
65:40 - 65:47What did He do? What was the price that He paid?
-
65:47 - 65:49We said that He accomplished redemption.
-
65:49 - 65:52He paid a price to set you free, to pay off your debt.
-
65:52 - 66:00What did He do? What is the most important thing that Jesus did?
-
66:00 - 66:11Jesus said this: "The Son of Man came to serve,
and give His life as a ransom for many." -
66:11 - 66:19What price did He pay? He gave His life.
The most precious thing that He could give. -
66:19 - 66:21He didn't pay for you with silver or gold.
-
66:21 - 66:26Look, if someone said, "Can you donate some of your blood?"
-
66:26 - 66:28"Well, yeah, I suppose I could do that.
-
66:28 - 66:32How much do you want, a pint? Okay, no problem."
-
66:32 - 66:35Jesus gave all of His blood.
-
66:35 - 66:39He poured out all of His blood until He was dead.
-
66:39 - 66:40He was giving His life.
-
66:40 - 66:43Why was He doing that? Why did He die?
-
66:43 - 66:48The Bible says this: "The soul that sins must die!"
-
66:48 - 66:52If you've commited even one sin, you must die.
-
66:52 - 67:00And there's no way you can pay back that price, unless you yourself die.
-
67:00 - 67:06Are you gonna go to hell? Jesus Christ came and gave His life.
-
67:06 - 67:08He died so that you might live.
-
67:08 - 67:10He died so that you wouldn't have to.
-
67:10 - 67:15The Law says, "The soul must die," and Jesus said, "I'll die.
-
67:15 - 67:18I'll be the One that dies, let them live.
-
67:18 - 67:24Father, forgive them. Father, save them. Take My life." (P)
-
67:24 - 67:27Have you trusted in Christ?
-
67:27 - 67:29What does it mean to believe in Jesus?
-
67:29 - 67:35It means to believe that God's own Son came down to this world
-
67:35 - 67:38(He who is the Lord, He who is God Himself),
-
67:38 - 67:45and He gave over His life to pay for my sins, to pay for my penalty,
-
67:45 - 67:47so that I wouldn't be destroyed.
-
67:47 - 67:53That all the demands of the Law, all the threatenings
and warnings of the Law - "You're going to die!" - -
67:53 - 67:56all of that He took away. He took away all the fear.
-
67:56 - 68:02He brought peace through the blood of His Cross.
-
68:02 - 68:05That's what He did.
-
68:05 - 68:09Jesus Christ gave His life so that you don't have to die,
-
68:09 - 68:17if you will believe in Him, if you will turn to Him. (P)
-
68:18 - 68:21God is preparing to make a way.
-
68:21 - 68:26That's what He says here: "Make a way,
prepare His ways for the Most High." -
68:26 - 68:29Most people never get prepared.
-
68:29 - 68:33They're just wasting their time, passing their life;
their life is passing them by. -
68:33 - 68:38But the good news is, even when people
don't have a clue how to save themselves, -
68:38 - 68:42and it's not even a thought in their mind,
-
68:42 - 68:46God is nowhere in their thoughts, a Godless life;
-
68:46 - 68:51at the same time God is working, and He is preparing to save them.
-
68:51 - 68:55Maybe you've never taken one thought even about your soul,
-
68:55 - 69:01never had one consideration really of how to
escape judgment and be forgiven, -
69:01 - 69:04but God has had many thoughts about this whole thing
-
69:04 - 69:08and He has prepared it all, He has accomplished it all.
-
69:08 - 69:13The Cross happened 2,000 years ago;
it's all finished, it's all done, it's all prepared. -
69:13 - 69:17Everything has been made ready.
-
69:17 - 69:20Now you must turn from your sin and you must believe;
-
69:20 - 69:28you must run to Christ and believe in Him; and you'll be saved.
-
69:28 - 69:31The one that calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
-
69:31 - 69:35Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Why?
-
69:35 - 69:38Because it's all ready, it's all prepared. It's free!
-
69:38 - 69:42You don't have to pay anything to God, you don't have to work...
-
69:42 - 69:45I mean, if it was something (we were talking about this on Sunday),
-
69:45 - 69:47if it was something difficult, wouldn't you do it?
-
69:47 - 69:51If it was like, you really had to pray five times a day, let's say for ten years
-
69:51 - 69:56(let's say God had a contract: Pray five times
a day for ten years, and you'll go to heaven), -
69:56 - 69:58wouldn't you do it?
-
69:58 - 70:00But the Bible says, No works.
-
70:00 - 70:04"To the one who does not work, but believes..."
-
70:04 - 70:10Faith - in a moment, in an instant - a free gift to be received by faith
-
70:10 - 70:17if you'll believe in Christ and trust in Him alone. (P)
-
70:17 - 70:26The last phrase, and our last verse, Luke 1:78-79,
-
70:26 - 70:35"Because of the tender mercy of our God,
with which the Sunrise from on high will visit us, -
70:35 - 70:41to shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death."
-
70:41 - 70:45The Sunrise from on high.
-
70:45 - 70:51This is like the shining of the sun, shining into the darkness,
-
70:51 - 70:56shining on those sitting in the dark, sitting in the shadows.
-
70:56 - 70:59And the sun breaks through the clouds,
and the light shines from heaven; -
70:59 - 71:04and it shines on those that were just in complete black.
-
71:04 - 71:08And now all around them is light.
-
71:08 - 71:10That's salvation.
-
71:10 - 71:12That's what God can do in your life.
-
71:12 - 71:18Are you in the dark? Are you confused? Are you stumbling around?
-
71:18 - 71:20Are you lost? You don't know the way?
-
71:20 - 71:23"I can't see the way, I feel like I'm in the dark.
-
71:23 - 71:26I feel empty. I feel sad. I feel sorrowful."
-
71:26 - 71:28Are you in the dark? (P)
-
71:28 - 71:32When someone becomes a Christian,
when someone trusts in Jesus Christ, -
71:32 - 71:35God floods light on their life.
-
71:35 - 71:37Jesus says, "I'm the Light of the world.
-
71:37 - 71:41He who follows Me will not walk in the darkness,
but will have the light of life. -
71:41 - 71:44He's not going to stumble in the darkness.
-
71:44 - 71:49Follow Me: I am the Light. Come to Me.
-
71:49 - 71:56Come to the Light, don't sit in the darkness." (P)
-
71:56 - 71:59Jesus is the Sunrise.
-
71:59 - 72:02Jesus is like the sun shining in the sky.
-
72:02 - 72:09It's amazing, you guys ever think about this,
the way God designed our Solar System? -
72:09 - 72:13The sun doesn't revolve around the earth,
the earth revolves around the sun. -
72:13 - 72:17At the center of everything - just like God, just like Jesus Christ -
-
72:17 - 72:23at the center of everything is this big ball
of energy and fire and heat and light. -
72:23 - 72:29And it's so huge, it's like it doesn't run out;
it just burns and burns and burns. -
72:29 - 72:33It's like this never-ending source of energy, almost.
-
72:33 - 72:37I mean, our physical sun is not that way, there would be an end to it.
-
72:37 - 72:38But it's almost like that.
-
72:38 - 72:44It's like we've been here thousands of years,
and it's just as hot as when we first started. -
72:44 - 72:46It's amazing! And everything revolves around the sun.
-
72:46 - 72:52Jesus Christ is the same way - all of life revolves around God.
-
72:52 - 72:55It's all about God. You're not the center of the universe.
-
72:55 - 72:59All the source of life - why do the plants grow?
-
72:59 - 73:02why does the rain fall? why does the breeze blow?
-
73:02 - 73:05why does everything happen? - it's the power of the sun.
-
73:05 - 73:08The sun is the source. No sun, no life.
-
73:08 - 73:11They say, "No water, no life," but it's, "No sun, no life, too."
-
73:11 - 73:14I mean, you've got to have light, you've got to have heat,
-
73:14 - 73:18otherwise nothing is going to move, you'll just be in the dark. (P)
-
73:18 - 73:25Listen, before God created the world, what was it? Darkness.
-
73:25 - 73:31And it's the same way, before God does a
work of a new creation in a person's heart, -
73:31 - 73:34before they're saved, it's just darkness.
-
73:34 - 73:39And then one day, God speaks and says, "Let there be light."
-
73:39 - 73:42And the light just shines in.
-
73:42 - 73:45It's like all of a sudden there's light, there's life.
-
73:45 - 73:49God sees the light, He sees that it's good; He blesses it.
-
73:49 - 73:51That's what it's like.
-
73:51 - 73:57I know, if you go around and ask the true Christians
in this room, what are they going to tell you? -
73:57 - 74:00They're all going to say, "Look, I love being a Christian.
-
74:00 - 74:05It's like every day it gets brighter and brighter.
-
74:05 - 74:08There's more and more joy, more and more glory,
-
74:08 - 74:11more and more strength, more and more faith, more and more love;
-
74:11 - 74:14brighter and brighter, like the shining of the sun.
-
74:14 - 74:16Like the sun, it starts in the morning,
-
74:16 - 74:18and there's starting to be light breaking into the darkness;
-
74:18 - 74:20and then a couple of hours later it's getting even brighter;
-
74:20 - 74:25and then the full day, where there's not a shadow around."
-
74:25 - 74:31That's where we are headed in the Christian life - the upward call -
-
74:31 - 74:34brighter and brighter, the light of God. (P)
-
74:34 - 74:36Do you want that?
-
74:36 - 74:40You say, "I'm too far gone. My life is too ruined.
-
74:40 - 74:42I've committed too many sins.
-
74:42 - 74:46I'm totally ignorant of the Bible, I don't know anything."
-
74:46 - 74:51You can be saved, because He came for the worst,
and He came for the lowest. -
74:51 - 74:54He came to shine light on who? On the ones that already had light? No.
-
74:54 - 74:58He came to give light to those who are sitting in the darkness.
-
74:58 - 75:01If you're down in the dumps, if you're in the darkness,
-
75:01 - 75:05if you're in the midst of all the sin and all the sorrow and all the despair,
-
75:05 - 75:14that's perfect opportunity to be saved, to turn to Jesus Christ.
-
75:16 - 75:17Well, Amen. Let's pray.
