Beyonce- Run the World (LIES)
-
0:00 - 0:01Hey Beyonce
-
0:01 - 0:02Guess what?
-
0:02 - 0:03You're a liar. I'm calling you out.
-
0:03 - 0:06Beyonce is selling you a bill of goods, and I'm here to tell you not to buy it.
-
0:06 - 0:09Her new song is called "Girls Who Run the World"
-
0:09 - 0:12I don't think it's right that she's out there promulgating historical inaccuracies
-
0:12 - 0:16to impressionable young women, imparting the false belief that they run the world,
-
0:16 - 0:19thereby lulling them into a false sense of achievement
-
0:19 - 0:21and distracting them from doing the work it takes
-
0:21 - 0:23to actually run the world.
-
0:23 - 0:26Which, by the way, I don't think female world domination is the goal.
-
0:26 - 0:29I think the endgame should be a socially egalitarian society.
-
0:29 - 0:31Girls really run the world?
-
0:31 - 0:34First of all, women are universally dominated
-
0:34 - 0:36There is not a society known where women as a group
-
0:36 - 0:38have decision making power over men as a group.
-
0:38 - 0:40[singing] "Who'll run the world? Girls!"
-
0:40 - 0:42A better question would be
-
0:42 - 0:43[singing] "Name the only American minority group
-
0:43 - 0:47that actually constitutes a majority of the population: GIRLS!"
-
0:47 - 0:5250.7% of the U.S. population is female, but sociologists consider women a minority group
-
0:52 - 0:54because of their position relative to men,
-
0:55 - 0:55the dominant group.
-
0:55 - 0:57There are things called "women's issues",
-
0:57 - 1:00which are apparently are "special interests".
-
1:00 - 1:03A problem that affects half of the population of your country
-
1:03 - 1:06is not a "special interest", ok?
-
1:06 - 1:08It's a big interest. It's a regular interest.
-
1:08 - 1:12So Beyonce, you really want to try to convince me that girls run the world?
-
1:12 - 1:15Is that why 90% of rape victims are female?
-
1:15 - 1:19And similarly, 95% of domestic abuse victims are female.
-
1:19 - 1:23According to that statistic, we're not even running our domeciles, let alone the globe.
-
1:23 - 1:26You'd agree that something should be done about that, right?
-
1:26 - 1:26So let me tell you,
-
1:26 - 1:30in South Caroline in 2005, cockfighting became a felony.
-
1:30 - 1:33That same year, there was a bill to make domestic violence a felony.
-
1:33 - 1:34Didn't pass.
-
1:34 - 1:38So apparently, if you let 2 chickens peck at each other for your entertainment
-
1:38 - 1:39you're a felon.
-
1:39 - 1:41But if you punch your wife in the teeth, not so much.
-
1:41 - 1:44If women have such power and influence
-
1:44 - 1:47then why are female fetuses in China and India selectively aborted?
-
1:47 - 1:50And before ultrasound was widely available for sex detection
-
1:50 - 1:54you just had to have the baby, and then if it was a girl, you just kill it.
-
1:54 - 1:55So.
-
1:56 - 1:58"Girl power!"
-
1:58 - 1:59I wish I were making this up.
-
1:59 - 2:01Let's examine some of the lyrics.
-
2:03 - 2:04Indeed!
-
2:04 - 2:06Go to work, and make your cheque,
-
2:06 - 2:09but be aware that your cheque is gonna be significantly smaller than your male counterparts
-
2:09 - 2:12because at all ages and at all education levels,
-
2:12 - 2:16American women are paid only 78% of what a man is paid for doing the same work,
-
2:16 - 2:19and that is a huge improvement from 1980 when it was only 60%.
-
2:23 - 2:26I actually agree with you there Beyonce.
-
2:26 - 2:30Men certainly do not "freak this" the way our culture demands that women do.
-
2:30 - 2:35Men aren't objectified in the same way or to the same magnitude that women are,
-
2:35 - 2:36if at all.
-
2:36 - 2:39Female sexuality is for sale, it;s profitable.
-
2:39 - 2:40And another thing,
-
2:40 - 2:45anecdotally, every issue of Cosmopolotan Magazine is about freakin' it.
-
2:45 - 2:47Women are sent messages like
-
2:47 - 2:49"First, take off his pants"
-
2:49 - 2:52But don't sleep with him cuz if you do then you're skanky.
-
2:52 - 2:53What am I to do?
-
2:53 - 2:55The message that the media sends women is, like,
-
2:55 - 2:57"be really really sexy, but not too sexy".
-
2:57 - 2:59It's a phenomenon known as the "virgin/whore dichotomy".
-
2:59 - 3:01Go briefly read about it if you want to.
-
3:01 - 3:02Link in ma pants.
-
3:02 - 3:06So indeed Beyonce, women have a very unique and contradictory course to navigate
-
3:06 - 3:08when it comes to freaking it in this country.
-
3:11 - 3:14Yes. They will. And they do. Often.
-
3:14 - 3:18I'd like to defer to a very famous doctor on this subject, Dr. Dre.
-
3:18 - 3:19He says, and I quote:
-
3:19 - 3:23"Bi*hes aint shit but h*'s and tricks"
-
3:23 - 3:24There you have it.
-
3:24 - 3:25Listen Mrs. Carter, you should know this 1st hand:
-
3:25 - 3:28When your husband isn't busy with his money, cash or h*s,
-
3:28 - 3:31he's still got 99 problems and a b**ch aint one.
-
3:31 - 3:34Of the most popular rap songs in recent memory,
-
3:34 - 3:37I am hard-pressed to think of one that doesn't have any reference to
-
3:37 - 3:39women as some derogatory name.
-
3:39 - 3:43Not to mention like workplace sexual harassment or cat-calling
-
3:43 - 3:45and all other manner of disrespectful things.
-
3:50 - 3:51Don't call me a b**ch.
-
3:51 - 3:53It doesn't make me feel empowered.
-
3:53 - 3:57We have this thing in our society whereby it's somehow OK to do and say sexist things
-
3:57 - 4:02because somehow they're not sexist anymore since women have so much power.
-
4:02 - 4:04And I think the media is partially to blame for this.
-
4:04 - 4:07Yes, it's nice to see female doctors and lawyers on tv
-
4:07 - 4:09and Geena Davis even played a female president
-
4:09 - 4:10in that one show
-
4:10 - 4:11that got canceled.
-
4:11 - 4:13And yes, lady humans can work and vote and work outside the home
-
4:13 - 4:17and all sorts of other things that weren't part of the status quo of past eras.
-
4:17 - 4:21But a simple survey of reality will reveal that we don't run anything.
-
4:21 - 4:23And pretending we do will get us nowhere.
-
4:23 - 4:25I think not only is it not helpful,
-
4:25 - 4:26it's actually harmful.
-
4:26 - 4:30Like, these messages of girl power in art and music and movies and
-
4:30 - 4:31all other sorts of media
-
4:31 - 4:35are useless unless there's actual work being done behind them
-
4:35 - 4:38A shift in values, policy changes, and changes in perception,
-
4:38 - 4:41there just needs to be a huge shift,
-
4:41 - 4:42and that's gonna take some time.
-
4:42 - 4:45The sporadic campaigns of girl power aren't really gettin' the job done.
-
4:45 - 4:48Remember the late 90's era of girl power circa Spice Girls?
-
4:48 - 4:51A group of ladies that told us we could be sporty
-
4:51 - 4:52or we could be scary
-
4:52 - 4:53we could be posh
-
4:53 - 4:55or we could dye our hair red like ginger
-
4:55 - 4:56or we could be babies.
-
4:56 - 4:57Awesome.
-
4:58 - 4:59Cuz that's just what women need more of:
-
5:01 - 5:04Women have made great strides towards equality,
-
5:04 - 5:05but we're not there yet.
-
5:05 - 5:08So it's a little premature to be making victory anthems.
-
5:08 - 5:11If you're at all interested by anything I said in this video,
-
5:11 - 5:14or realize that some of this stuff I talked about isn't really fair,
-
5:14 - 5:16then you should look into it for yourself,
-
5:16 - 5:17and if you want to do it the old fashioned way
-
5:17 - 5:19I highly recommend this book.
-
5:19 - 5:21It's called Full Frontal Feminism by Jessica Valenti,
-
5:21 - 5:23an excellent, excellent book.
-
5:23 - 5:24Or you could just go to our website,
-
5:24 - 5:25which is called
-
5:27 - 5:29which is dangerously close to the word "fisting"
-
5:29 - 5:31and makes me feel, frankly, uncomfortable to say it.
-
5:31 - 5:33And that concludes this video
-
5:33 - 5:34bye everyone.
-
5:36 - 5:3650 po...
-
5:36 - 5:39BEEP [machine voice] "a mass virus database has been updated"
-
5:39 -Thank you for that. OK.Thank you.

- Beyonce- Run the World (LIES)
- Description:
-
It's a song. I get it. It's just a song. Continue Reading.
This video is not about Beyonce. It's not even really about this song. My point is NOT that she shouldn't have made this song because of X, Y, and Z.
My point IS: Oh, Look! X, Y, and Z exist and this song is a great tie-in to a discussion of feminism.
If you've watched some of my other videos, you would be able to sense the sarcastic tone. Relax.
