Love, no matter what

    when I was three years old.

    And last year, the president
    of the United States
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    came out in favor of gay marriage.
  • 0:46 - 0:53

    And my question is:
  • 0:55 - 0:59
    How did we get from there to here?
  • 0:59 - 1:03
    How did an illness become an identity?
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    When I was perhaps six years old,
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    I went to a shoe store
    with my mother and my brother.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    And at the end of buying our shoes,
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    the salesman said to us that we could
    each have a balloon to take home.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    My brother wanted a red balloon,
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    and I wanted a pink balloon.
  • 1:21 - 1:26
    My mother said that she thought
    I'd really rather have a blue balloon.
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    But I said that I definitely
    wanted the pink one.
  • 1:29 - 1:34
    And she reminded me
    that my favorite color was blue.
  • 1:35 - 1:39
    The fact that my favorite color
    now is blue, but I'm still gay --
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    (Laughter)
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    is evidence of both my mother's influence
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    and its limits.
  • 1:46 - 1:49

    When I was little, my mother used to say,
  • 1:58 - 2:03
    "The love you have for your children
    is like no other feeling in the world.
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    And until you have children,
    you don't know what it's like."

    And when I was little, I took it
    as the greatest compliment in the world
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    that she would say that
    about parenting my brother and me.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
    And when I was an adolescent,
    I thought, "But I'm gay,
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    and so I probably can't have a family."
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    And when she said it, it made me anxious.
  • 2:21 - 2:22
    And after I came out of the closet,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    when she continued to say it,
    it made me furious.
  • 2:25 - 2:29
    I said, "I'm gay. That's not
    the direction that I'm headed in.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    And I want you to stop saying that."
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    About 20 years ago,
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    I was asked by my editors
    at the "New York Times Magazine"
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    to write a piece about Deaf culture.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    And I was rather taken aback.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    I had thought of deafness
    entirely as an illness:
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    those poor people, they couldn't hear,
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    they lacked hearing,
    and what could we do for them?
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    And then I went out into the Deaf world.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    I went to Deaf clubs.
  • 2:56 - 3:00
    I saw performances of Deaf theater
    and of Deaf poetry.
  • 3:00 - 3:06
    I even went to the Miss Deaf America
    contest in Nashville, Tennessee,
  • 3:06 - 3:10
    where people complained
    about that slurry Southern signing.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
    (Laughter)
  • 3:14 - 3:18
    And as I plunged deeper and deeper
    into the Deaf world,
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    I became convinced
    that deafness was a culture
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    and that the people
    in the Deaf world who said,
  • 3:23 - 3:27
    "We don't lack hearing;
    we have membership in a culture,"
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    were saying something that was viable.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    It wasn't my culture,
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    and I didn't particularly
    want to rush off and join it,
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    but I appreciated that it was a culture
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    and that for the people
    who were members of it,
  • 3:39 - 3:44
    it felt as valuable as Latino culture
    or gay culture or Jewish culture.
  • 3:44 - 3:49
    It felt as valid, perhaps,
    even as American culture.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    Then a friend of a friend of mine
    had a daughter who was a dwarf.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    And when her daughter was born,
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    she suddenly found herself
    confronting questions
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    that now began to seem
    quite resonant to me.
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    She was facing the question
    of what to do with this child.
  • 4:03 - 4:07
    Should she say, "You're just like
    everyone else but a little bit shorter?"
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    Or should she try to construct
    some kind of dwarf identity,
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    get involved in Little People of America,
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    become aware of what
    was happening for dwarfs?
  • 4:16 - 4:17
    And I suddenly thought,
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    most deaf children are born
    to hearing parents.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    Those hearing parents
    tend to try to cure them.
  • 4:22 - 4:26
    Those deaf people discover community
    somehow in adolescence.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    Most gay people are born
    to straight parents.
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    Those straight parents
    often want them to function
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    in what they think of as
    the mainstream world,
  • 4:33 - 4:37
    and those gay people
    have to discover identity later on.
  • 4:37 - 4:38
    And here was this friend of mine,
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    looking at these questions of identity
    with her dwarf daughter.
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    And I thought, there it is again:
  • 4:44 - 4:46
    a family that perceives
    itself to be normal
  • 4:46 - 4:49
    with a child who seems
    to be extraordinary.
  • 4:49 - 4:53
    And I hatched the idea that there
    are really two kinds of identity.
  • 4:54 - 4:55
    There are vertical identities,
  • 4:55 - 4:58
    which are passed down generationally
    from parent to child.
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    Those are things like ethnicity,
  • 5:00 - 5:04
    frequently nationality,
    language, often religion.
  • 5:04 - 5:08
    Those are things you have in common
    with your parents and with your children.
  • 5:08 - 5:11
    And while some of them can be difficult,
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    there's no attempt to cure them.
  • 5:13 - 5:16
    You can argue that it's harder
    in the United States --
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    our current presidency notwithstanding --
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    to be a person of color.
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    And yet, we have nobody
    who is trying to ensure
  • 5:22 - 5:26
    that the next generation of children
    born to African-Americans and Asians
  • 5:26 - 5:29
    come out with creamy skin and yellow hair.
  • 5:30 - 5:34
    There are these other identities
    which you have to learn from a peer group,
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    and I call them "horizontal identities,"
  • 5:36 - 5:39
    because the peer group
    is the horizontal experience.
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    These are identities
    that are alien to your parents
  • 5:42 - 5:46
    and that you have to discover
    when you get to see them in peers.
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    And those identities,
    those horizontal identities,
  • 5:49 - 5:53
    people have almost always tried to cure.
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    And I wanted to look
    at what the process is
  • 5:55 - 5:58
    through which people
    who have those identities
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    come to a good relationship with them.
  • 6:00 - 6:05
    And it seemed to me that
    there were three levels of acceptance
  • 6:05 - 6:06
    that needed to take place.
  • 6:06 - 6:12
    There's self-acceptance, there's family
    acceptance, and there's social acceptance.
  • 6:12 - 6:14
    And they don't always coincide.
  • 6:14 - 6:18
    And a lot of the time, people who have
    these conditions are very angry,
  • 6:18 - 6:21
    because they feel as though
    their parents don't love them,
  • 6:21 - 6:25
    when what actually has happened
    is that their parents don't accept them.
  • 6:25 - 6:28
    Love is something that ideally
    is there unconditionally
  • 6:28 - 6:31
    throughout the relationship
    between a parent and a child.
  • 6:32 - 6:35
    But acceptance is something
    that takes time.
  • 6:35 - 6:36
    It always takes time.
  • 6:37 - 6:41
    One of the dwarfs I got to know
    was a guy named Clinton Brown.
  • 6:42 - 6:45
    When he was born, he was diagnosed
    with diastrophic dwarfism,
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    a very disabling condition.
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    His parents were told
    that he would never walk,
  • 6:49 - 6:50
    he would never talk,
  • 6:50 - 6:52
    he would have no intellectual capacity,
  • 6:52 - 6:55
    and he would probably
    not even recognize them.
  • 6:55 - 6:58
    And it was suggested to them
    that they leave him at the hospital
  • 6:58 - 7:01
    so that he could die there quietly.
  • 7:01 - 7:03
    His mother said she wasn't going to do it,
  • 7:03 - 7:04
    and she took her son home.
  • 7:04 - 7:08
    And even though she didn't have a lot
    of educational or financial advantages,
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    she found the best doctor in the country
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    for dealing with diastrophic dwarfism,
  • 7:12 - 7:14
    and she got Clinton enrolled with him.
  • 7:14 - 7:17
    And in the course of his childhood,
  • 7:17 - 7:19
    he had 30 major surgical procedures.
  • 7:19 - 7:22
    And he spent all this time
    stuck in the hospital
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    while he was having those procedures,
  • 7:24 - 7:26
    as a result of which, he now can walk.
  • 7:26 - 7:30
    While he was there, they sent tutors
    around to help him with his schoolwork,
  • 7:30 - 7:33
    and he worked very hard,
    because there was nothing else to do.
  • 7:33 - 7:35
    He ended up achieving at a level
  • 7:35 - 7:38
    that had never before been contemplated
    by any member of his family.
  • 7:39 - 7:42
    He was the first one in his family,
    in fact, to go to college,
  • 7:42 - 7:45
    where he lived on campus
    and drove a specially fitted car
  • 7:45 - 7:48
    that accommodated his unusual body.
  • 7:48 - 7:51
    His mother told me the story
    of coming home one day --
  • 7:51 - 7:53
    he went to college nearby --
  • 7:53 - 7:56
    and she said, "I saw that car,
    which you can always recognize,
  • 7:56 - 7:59
    in the parking lot of a bar," she said.
  • 7:59 - 8:00
    (Laughter)
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    "And I thought to myself,
  • 8:02 - 8:05
    'They're six feet tall,
    he's three feet tall.
  • 8:05 - 8:07
    Two beers for them
    is four beers for him.'"
  • 8:07 - 8:10
    She said, "I knew I couldn't
    go in there and interrupt him,
  • 8:10 - 8:13
    but I went home, and I left him
    eight messages on his cell phone."
  • 8:14 - 8:15
    She said, "And then I thought,
  • 8:15 - 8:18
    if someone had said to me when he was born
  • 8:18 - 8:21
    that my future worry would be
    that he'd go drinking and driving
  • 8:21 - 8:23
    with his college buddies ..."
  • 8:23 - 8:24
    (Laughter)
  • 8:24 - 8:31
    (Applause)
  • 8:32 - 8:33
    And I said to her,
  • 8:33 - 8:36
    "What do you think you did
    that helped him to emerge
  • 8:36 - 8:38
    as this charming, accomplished,
    wonderful person?"
  • 8:38 - 8:41
    And she said, "What did I do?
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    I loved him, that's all.
  • 8:43 - 8:47
    Clinton just always had that light in him.
  • 8:47 - 8:52
    And his father and I were lucky enough
    to be the first to see it there."
  • 8:53 - 8:56
    I'm going to quote
    from another magazine of the '60s.
  • 8:56 - 9:02
    This one is from 1968 -- the "Atlantic
    Monthly," voice of liberal America --
  • 9:02 - 9:04
    written by an important bioethicist.
  • 9:04 - 9:08
    He said, "There is no
    reason to feel guilty
  • 9:08 - 9:11
    about putting a Down's
    syndrome child away,
  • 9:11 - 9:16
    whether it is 'put away' in the sense
    of hidden in a sanitarium
  • 9:16 - 9:19
    or in a more responsible, lethal sense.
  • 9:20 - 9:23
    It is sad, yes. Dreadful.
  • 9:23 - 9:25
    But it carries no guilt.
  • 9:25 - 9:29
    True guilt arises only
    from an offense against a person,
  • 9:29 - 9:33
    and a Down's is not a person."
  • 9:34 - 9:38
    There's been a lot of ink given
    to the enormous progress that we've made
  • 9:38 - 9:40
    in the treatment of gay people.
  • 9:40 - 9:44
    The fact that our attitude has changed
    is in the headlines every day.
  • 9:44 - 9:48
    But we forget how we used to see people
    who had other differences,
  • 9:48 - 9:51
    how we used to see people
    who were disabled,
  • 9:51 - 9:54
    how inhuman we held people to be.
  • 9:54 - 9:56
    And the change that's
    been accomplished there,
  • 9:56 - 9:57
    which is almost equally radical,
  • 9:57 - 10:00
    is one that we pay not
    very much attention to.
  • 10:00 - 10:04
    One of the families I interviewed,
    Tom and Karen Robards,
  • 10:04 - 10:08
    were taken aback when,
    as young and successful New Yorkers,
  • 10:08 - 10:11
    their first child was diagnosed
    with Down syndrome.
  • 10:11 - 10:15
    They thought the educational opportunities
    for him were not what they should be,
  • 10:15 - 10:19
    and so they decided
    they would build a little center --
  • 10:19 - 10:23
    two classrooms that they started
    with a few other parents --
  • 10:23 - 10:25
    to educate kids with DS.
  • 10:25 - 10:29
    And over the years, that center grew
    into something called the Cooke Center,
  • 10:29 - 10:32
    where there are now thousands
    upon thousands of children
  • 10:32 - 10:34
    with intellectual disabilities
  • 10:34 - 10:35
    who are being taught.
  • 10:35 - 10:39
    In the time since that "Atlantic
    Monthly" story ran,
  • 10:39 - 10:42
    the life expectancy for people
    with Down syndrome has tripled.
  • 10:42 - 10:48
    The experience of Down syndrome
    people includes those who are actors,
  • 10:48 - 10:53
    those who are writers, some who are able
    to live fully independently in adulthood.
  • 10:54 - 10:55
    The Robards had a lot to do with that.
  • 10:55 - 10:57
    And I said, "Do you regret it?
  • 10:57 - 10:59
    Do you wish your child
    didn't have Down syndrome?
  • 10:59 - 11:01
    Do you wish you'd never heard of it?"
  • 11:01 - 11:04
    And interestingly, his father said,
  • 11:04 - 11:06
    "Well, for David, our son, I regret it,
  • 11:06 - 11:10
    because for David, it's a difficult
    way to be in the world,
  • 11:10 - 11:12
    and I'd like to give David an easier life.
  • 11:12 - 11:15
    But I think if we lost
    everyone with Down syndrome,
  • 11:15 - 11:18
    it would be a catastrophic loss."
  • 11:18 - 11:21
    And Karen Robards said
    to me, "I'm with Tom.
  • 11:21 - 11:25
    For David, I would cure it in an instant
    to give him an easier life.
  • 11:25 - 11:27
    But speaking for myself --
  • 11:27 - 11:30
    well, I would never have believed
    23 years ago when he was born
  • 11:30 - 11:32
    that I could come to such a point.
  • 11:32 - 11:37
    Speaking for myself, it's made me
    so much better and so much kinder
  • 11:37 - 11:42
    and so much more purposeful in my whole
    life that, speaking for myself,
  • 11:42 - 11:45
    I wouldn't give it up
    for anything in the world."
  • 11:46 - 11:50
    We live at a point when social acceptance
    for these and many other conditions
  • 11:50 - 11:52
    is on the up and up.
  • 11:52 - 11:54
    And yet we also live at the moment
  • 11:54 - 11:57
    when our ability to eliminate
    those conditions
  • 11:57 - 12:00
    has reached a height
    we never imagined before.
  • 12:00 - 12:03
    Most deaf infants born
    in the United States now
  • 12:03 - 12:05
    will receive cochlear implants,
  • 12:05 - 12:09
    which are put into the brain
    and connected to a receiver,
  • 12:09 - 12:12
    and which allow them to acquire
    a facsimile of hearing
  • 12:12 - 12:14
    and to use oral speech.
  • 12:14 - 12:19
    A compound that has been tested
    in mice, BMN-111,
  • 12:19 - 12:23
    is useful in preventing the action
    of the achondroplasia gene.
  • 12:23 - 12:26
    Achondroplasia is the most common
    form of dwarfism.
  • 12:26 - 12:30
    Mice who have been given that substance
    and who have the achondroplasia gene
  • 12:30 - 12:32
    grow to full size.
  • 12:32 - 12:35
    Testing in humans is around the corner.
  • 12:35 - 12:37
    There are blood tests
    which are making progress
  • 12:37 - 12:41
    that would pick up Down syndrome
    more clearly and earlier in pregnancies
  • 12:42 - 12:43
    than ever before,
  • 12:43 - 12:48
    making it easier and easier for people
    to eliminate those pregnancies,
  • 12:48 - 12:49
    or to terminate them.
  • 12:49 - 12:54
    So we have both social progress
    and medical progress.
  • 12:54 - 12:56
    And I believe in both of them.
  • 12:56 - 13:00
    I believe the social progress is fantastic
    and meaningful and wonderful,
  • 13:00 - 13:03
    and I think the same thing
    about the medical progress.
  • 13:03 - 13:07
    But I think it's a tragedy when
    one of them doesn't see the other.
  • 13:07 - 13:09
    And when I see the way
    they're intersecting
  • 13:09 - 13:12
    in conditions like the three
    I've just described,
  • 13:12 - 13:15
    I sometimes think it's like
    those moments in grand opera
  • 13:15 - 13:18
    when the hero realizes
    he loves the heroine
  • 13:18 - 13:22
    at the exact moment
    that she lies expiring on a divan.
  • 13:22 - 13:25
    (Laughter)
  • 13:25 - 13:29
    We have to think about how we feel
    about cures altogether.
  • 13:29 - 13:32
    And a lot of the time
    the question of parenthood is:
  • 13:32 - 13:33
    What do we validate in our children,
  • 13:34 - 13:35
    and what do we cure in them?
  • 13:35 - 13:39
    Jim Sinclair, a prominent
    autism activist, said,
  • 13:40 - 13:44
    "When parents say, 'I wish
    my child did not have autism, '
  • 13:44 - 13:49
    what they're really saying is,
    'I wish the child I have did not exist
  • 13:49 - 13:52
    and I had a different,
    nonautistic child instead.'
  • 13:53 - 13:58
    Read that again. This is what we hear
    when you mourn over our existence.
  • 13:58 - 14:01
    This is what we hear
    when you pray for a cure:
  • 14:01 - 14:05
    that your fondest wish for us
    is that someday we will cease to be
  • 14:05 - 14:10
    and strangers you can love
    will move in behind our faces."
  • 14:11 - 14:14
    It's a very extreme point of view,
  • 14:14 - 14:18
    but it points to the reality that people
    engage with the life they have
  • 14:18 - 14:23
    and they don't want to be cured
    or changed or eliminated.
  • 14:23 - 14:26
    They want to be whoever it is
    that they've come to be.
  • 14:26 - 14:30
    One of the families
    I interviewed for this project
  • 14:30 - 14:32
    was the family of Dylan Klebold,
  • 14:32 - 14:35
    who was one of the perpetrators
    of the Columbine massacre.
  • 14:35 - 14:38
    It took a long time
    to persuade them to talk to me,
  • 14:38 - 14:40
    and once they agreed,
    they were so full of their story
  • 14:40 - 14:42
    that they couldn't stop telling it.
  • 14:42 - 14:45
    The first weekend I spent
    with them, the first of many,
  • 14:45 - 14:48
    I recorded more than
    20 hours of conversation.
  • 14:48 - 14:50
    And on Sunday night,
    we were all exhausted.
  • 14:50 - 14:53
    We were sitting in the kitchen.
    Sue Klebold was fixing dinner.
  • 14:53 - 14:56
    And I said, "If Dylan were here now,
  • 14:56 - 14:59
    do you have a sense
    of what you'd want to ask him?"
  • 14:59 - 15:01
    And his father said, "I sure do.
  • 15:01 - 15:04
    I'd want to ask him what the hell
    he thought he was doing."
  • 15:04 - 15:07
    And Sue looked at the floor,
    and she thought for a minute.
  • 15:08 - 15:11
    And then she looked back up and said,
  • 15:11 - 15:14
    "I would ask him to forgive me
    for being his mother
  • 15:14 - 15:17
    and never knowing what
    was going on inside his head."
  • 15:19 - 15:22
    When I had dinner with her
    a couple of years later --
  • 15:22 - 15:24
    one of many dinners
    that we had together --
  • 15:24 - 15:27
    she said, "You know,
    when it first happened,
  • 15:27 - 15:31
    I used to wish that I had never married,
    that I had never had children.
  • 15:31 - 15:34
    If I hadn't gone to Ohio State
    and crossed paths with Tom,
  • 15:34 - 15:36
    this child wouldn't have existed,
  • 15:36 - 15:38
    and this terrible thing
    wouldn't have happened.
  • 15:38 - 15:42
    But I've come to feel that I love
    the children I had so much
  • 15:42 - 15:45
    that I don't want to imagine
    a life without them.
  • 15:46 - 15:48
    I recognize the pain
    they caused to others,
  • 15:48 - 15:51
    for which there can be no forgiveness,
  • 15:51 - 15:54
    but the pain they caused
    to me, there is," she said.
  • 15:54 - 15:58
    "So while I recognize that
    it would have been better for the world
  • 15:58 - 16:00
    if Dylan had never been born,
  • 16:00 - 16:05
    I've decided that it would not
    have been better for me."
  • 16:06 - 16:08
    I thought it was surprising
  • 16:08 - 16:11
    how all of these families
    had all of these children
  • 16:11 - 16:12
    with all of these problems,
  • 16:12 - 16:15
    problems that they mostly
    would have done anything to avoid,
  • 16:15 - 16:19
    and that they had all found so much
    meaning in that experience of parenting.
  • 16:19 - 16:22
    And then I thought,
    all of us who have children
  • 16:22 - 16:25
    love the children we have,
    with their flaws.
  • 16:25 - 16:29
    If some glorious angel suddenly descended
    through my living room ceiling
  • 16:29 - 16:31
    and offered to take away
    the children I have
  • 16:31 - 16:37
    and give me other, better children --
    more polite, funnier, nicer, smarter --
  • 16:37 - 16:38
    (Laughter)
  • 16:38 - 16:43
    I would cling to the children I have
    and pray away that atrocious spectacle.
  • 16:43 - 16:44
    And ultimately,
  • 16:44 - 16:49
    I feel that in the same way that we test
    flame-retardant pajamas in an inferno
  • 16:49 - 16:53
    to ensure they won't catch fire
    when our child reaches across the stove,
  • 16:53 - 16:57
    so these stories of families
    negotiating these extreme differences
  • 16:57 - 17:00
    reflect on the universal
    experience of parenting,
  • 17:00 - 17:04
    which is always that sometimes
    you look at your child and you think,
  • 17:04 - 17:06
    "Where did you come from?"
  • 17:06 - 17:09
    (Laughter)
  • 17:09 - 17:14
    It turns out that while each of these
    individual differences is siloed --
  • 17:14 - 17:16
    there are only so many families
    dealing with schizophrenia,
  • 17:16 - 17:19
    only so many families
    of children who are transgender,
  • 17:19 - 17:21
    only so many families of prodigies
  • 17:21 - 17:23
    who also face similar
    challenges in many ways --
  • 17:24 - 17:26
    there are only so many families
    in each of those categories.
  • 17:26 - 17:28
    But if you start to think
  • 17:28 - 17:31
    that the experience of negotiating
    difference within your family

    then you discover that it's a nearly
    universal phenomenon.

    Ironically, it turns out,
  • 17:38 - 17:42
    that it's our differences
    and our negotiation of difference
  • 17:42 - 17:43
    that unite us.
  • 17:44 - 17:49
    I decided to have children
    while I was working on this project.
  • 17:49 - 17:52
    And many people were astonished and said,
  • 17:53 - 17:55
    "But how can you decide to have children
  • 17:55 - 17:58
    in the midst of studying
    everything that can go wrong?"
  • 17:59 - 18:02
    And I said, "I'm not studying
    everything that can go wrong.
  • 18:02 - 18:05
    What I'm studying is how much
    love there can be,
  • 18:05 - 18:09
    even when everything appears
    to be going wrong."
  • 18:09 - 18:15
    I thought a lot about the mother
    of one disabled child I had seen,
  • 18:15 - 18:19
    a severely disabled child who died
    through caregiver neglect.
  • 18:19 - 18:22
    And when his ashes were
    interred, his mother said,
  • 18:23 - 18:30
    "I pray here for forgiveness
    for having been twice robbed,
  • 18:30 - 18:32
    once of the child I wanted
  • 18:32 - 18:35
    and once of the son I loved."
  • 18:36 - 18:40
    And I figured it was possible
    then for anyone to love any child
  • 18:40 - 18:42
    if they had the effective will to do so.
  • 18:43 - 18:48
    So, my husband is the biological
    father of two children
  • 18:48 - 18:50
    with some lesbian friends in Minneapolis.
  • 18:51 - 18:55
    I had a close friend from college
    who'd gone through a divorce
  • 18:55 - 18:56
    and wanted to have children.
  • 18:57 - 18:58
    And so she and I have a daughter,
  • 18:58 - 19:00
    and mother and daughter live in Texas.
  • 19:00 - 19:04
    And my husband and I have a son
    who lives with us all the time,
  • 19:04 - 19:06
    of whom I am the biological father,
  • 19:06 - 19:10
    and our surrogate
    for the pregnancy was Laura,
  • 19:10 - 19:13
    the lesbian mother of Oliver
    and Lucy in Minneapolis.
  • 19:13 - 19:14
    (Laughter)
  • 19:14 - 19:15
    So --
  • 19:15 - 19:22

  • 19:22 - 19:27
    the shorthand is: five parents
    of four children in three states.
  • 19:27 - 19:28

    And there are people who think
    that the existence of my family
  • 19:31 - 19:35
    somehow undermines or weakens
    or damages their family.
  • 19:35 - 19:39
    And there are people who think
    that families like mine
  • 19:39 - 19:40
    shouldn't be allowed to exist.
  • 19:40 - 19:44
    And I don't accept
    subtractive models of love,
  • 19:44 - 19:46
    only additive ones.
  • 19:46 - 19:50
    And I believe that in the same way
    that we need species diversity
  • 19:50 - 19:52
    to ensure that the planet can go on,
  • 19:52 - 19:56
    so we need this diversity
    of affection and diversity of family
  • 19:56 - 20:00
    in order to strengthen
    the ecosphere of kindness.
  • 20:01 - 20:03
    The day after our son was born,
  • 20:04 - 20:06
    the pediatrician came
    into the hospital room
  • 20:06 - 20:08
    and said she was concerned.
  • 20:08 - 20:11
    He wasn't extending
    his legs appropriately.
  • 20:11 - 20:14
    She said that might mean
    that he had brain damage.
  • 20:14 - 20:17
    Insofar as he was extending them,
    he was doing so asymmetrically,
  • 20:17 - 20:21
    which she thought could mean that there
    was a tumor of some kind in action.
  • 20:21 - 20:23
    And he had a very large head,
  • 20:23 - 20:26
    which she thought might
    indicate hydrocephalus.
  • 20:26 - 20:28
    And as she told me all of these things,
  • 20:28 - 20:31
    I felt the very center of my being
    pouring out onto the floor.
  • 20:31 - 20:34
    And I thought, here I had
    been working for years
  • 20:34 - 20:36
    on a book about how much
    meaning people had found
  • 20:37 - 20:40
    in the experience of parenting
    children who were disabled,
  • 20:40 - 20:44
    and I didn't want to join their number,
  • 20:44 - 20:46
    because what I was encountering
    was an idea of illness.
  • 20:46 - 20:49
    And like all parents
    since the dawn of time,
  • 20:49 - 20:52
    I wanted to protect my child from illness.
  • 20:52 - 20:55
    And I wanted also to protect
    myself from illness.
  • 20:55 - 20:58
    And yet, I knew from the work I had done
  • 20:58 - 21:02
    that if he had any of the things
    we were about to start testing for,
  • 21:02 - 21:05
    that those would ultimately
    be his identity,
  • 21:05 - 21:09
    and if they were his identity,
    they would become my identity,
  • 21:09 - 21:13
    that that illness was going to take
    a very different shape as it unfolded.
  • 21:13 - 21:17
    We took him to the MRI machine,
    we took him to the CAT scanner,
  • 21:17 - 21:20
    we took this day-old child and gave
    him over for an arterial blood draw.
  • 21:20 - 21:22
    We felt helpless.
  • 21:22 - 21:23
    And at the end of five hours,
  • 21:23 - 21:26
    they said that his brain
    was completely clear
  • 21:26 - 21:28
    and that he was by then
    extending his legs correctly.
  • 21:28 - 21:31
    And when I asked the pediatrician
    what had been going on,
  • 21:31 - 21:36
    she said she thought in the morning
    he had probably had a cramp.
  • 21:36 - 21:39

    But I thought --
  • 21:40 - 21:44
    (Laughter)

    I thought how my mother was right.
  • 21:47 - 21:50
    I thought, the love you
    have for your children
  • 21:50 - 21:54
    is unlike any other feeling in the world.
  • 21:54 - 21:59
    And until you have children,
    you don't know what it feels like.

    I think children had ensnared me
  • 22:02 - 22:05
    the moment I connected
    fatherhood with loss.
  • 22:06 - 22:08
    But I'm not sure I would have noticed that
  • 22:08 - 22:13
    if I hadn't been so in the thick
    of this research project of mine.
  • 22:13 - 22:17
    I'd encountered so much strange love,
  • 22:17 - 22:20
    and I fell very naturally
    into its bewitching patterns.
  • 22:20 - 22:26
    And I saw how splendor can illuminate
    even the most abject vulnerabilities.

    During these 10 years,
    I had witnessed and learned
  • 22:31 - 22:35
    the terrifying joy
    of unbearable responsibility,

    and I had come to see how it
    conquers everything else.

    And while I had sometimes thought
    the parents I was interviewing were fools,
  • 22:42 - 22:47
    enslaving themselves to a lifetime's
    journey with their thankless children

    and trying to breed
    identity out of misery,

    I realized that day that my research
    had built me a plank
  • 22:55 - 22:58
    and that I was ready to join
    them on their ship.
