Tracking our online trackers
-
0:01 - 0:04I don't know why, but I'm continually amazed to think
-
0:04 - 0:06that two and a half billion of us around the world
-
0:06 - 0:09are connected to each other through the Internet
-
0:09 - 0:11and that at any point in time
-
0:11 - 0:14more than 30 percent of the world's population
-
0:14 - 0:19can go online to learn, to create and to share.
-
0:19 - 0:22And the amount of time each of us is spending doing all of this
-
0:22 - 0:24is also continuing to go grow.
-
0:24 - 0:26A recent study showed
-
0:26 - 0:27that the young generation alone
-
0:27 - 0:30is spending over eight hours a day online.
-
0:30 - 0:33As the parent of a nine-year-old girl,
-
0:33 - 0:35that number seems awfully low.
-
0:35 - 0:36(Laughter)
-
0:36 - 0:40But just as the Internet has opened up the world for each and every one of us,
-
0:40 - 0:44it has also opened up each and every one of us to the world.
-
0:44 - 0:47And increasingly, the price we're being asked to pay
-
0:47 - 0:48for all of this connectedness
-
0:48 - 0:50is our privacy.
-
0:50 - 0:54Today, what many of us would love to believe
-
0:54 - 0:57is that the Internet is a private place; it's not.
-
0:57 - 1:00And with every click of the mouse and every touch of the screen,
-
1:00 - 1:02we are like Hansel and Gretel
-
1:02 - 1:05leaving breadcrumbs of our personal information
-
1:05 - 1:07everywhere we travel through the digital woods.
-
1:07 - 1:12We are leaving our birthdays, our places of residence,
-
1:12 - 1:15our interests and preferences,
-
1:15 - 1:17our relationships,
-
1:17 - 1:21our financial histories, and on and on it goes.
-
1:21 - 1:22Now don't get me wrong,
-
1:22 - 1:26I'm not for one minute suggesting that sharing data is a bad thing.
-
1:26 - 1:28In fact, when I know the data that's being shared
-
1:28 - 1:31and I'm asked explicitly for my consent,
-
1:31 - 1:34I want some sites to understand my habits.
-
1:34 - 1:36It helps them suggest books for me to read
-
1:36 - 1:38or movies for my family to watch
-
1:38 - 1:41or friends for us to connect with.
-
1:41 - 1:44But when I don't know and when I haven't been asked,
-
1:44 - 1:46that's when the problem arises.
-
1:46 - 1:48It's a phenomenon on the Internet today
-
1:48 - 1:50called behavioral tracking,
-
1:50 - 1:52and it is very big business.
-
1:52 - 1:54In fact, there's an entire industry formed
-
1:54 - 1:56around following us through the digital woods
-
1:56 - 1:59and compiling a profile on each of us.
-
1:59 - 2:01And when all of that data is held,
-
2:01 - 2:04they can do almost whatever they want with it.
-
2:04 - 2:07This is an area today that has very few regulations
-
2:07 - 2:09and even fewer rules.
-
2:09 - 2:13Except for some of the recent announcements here in the United States and in Europe,
-
2:13 - 2:17it's an area of consumer protection that's almost entirely naked.
-
2:17 - 2:20So let me expose this lurking industry a little bit further.
-
2:20 - 2:24The visualization you see forming behind me is called Collusion
-
2:24 - 2:27and it's an experimental browser add-on
-
2:27 - 2:30that you can install in your Firefox browser
-
2:30 - 2:34that helps you see where your Web data is going and who's tracking you.
-
2:34 - 2:37The red dots you see up there
-
2:37 - 2:39are sites that are behavioral tracking
-
2:39 - 2:42that I have not navigated to, but are following me.
-
2:42 - 2:45The blue dots are the sites that I've actually navigated directly to.
-
2:45 - 2:49And the gray dots are sites that are also tracking me,
-
2:49 - 2:51but I have no idea who they are.
-
2:51 - 2:53All of them are connected, as you can see,
-
2:53 - 2:55to form a picture of me on the Web.
-
2:55 - 2:57And this is my profile.
-
2:57 - 3:00So let me go from an example to something very specific and personal.
-
3:00 - 3:03I installed Collusion in my own laptop two weeks ago
-
3:03 - 3:06and I let it follow me around for what was a pretty typical day.
-
3:06 - 3:09Now like most of you,
-
3:09 - 3:12I actually start my day going online and checking email.
-
3:12 - 3:15I then go to a news site, look for some headlines.
-
3:15 - 3:19And in this particular case I happened to like one of them
-
3:19 - 3:22on the merits of music literacy in schools
-
3:22 - 3:24and I shared it over a social network.
-
3:24 - 3:27Our daughter then joined us at the breakfast table,
-
3:27 - 3:31and I asked her, "Is there an emphasis on music literacy in your school?"
-
3:31 - 3:33And she, of course, naturally as a nine-year-old,
-
3:33 - 3:35looked at me and said quizzically, "What's literacy?"
-
3:35 - 3:39So I sent her online, of course, to look it up.
-
3:39 - 3:41Now let me stop here.
-
3:41 - 3:44We are not even two bites into breakfast
-
3:44 - 3:48and there are already nearly 25 sites that are tracking me.
-
3:48 - 3:52I have navigated to a total of four.
-
3:52 - 3:55So let me fast-forward through the rest of my day.
-
3:55 - 3:57I go to work, I check email,
-
3:57 - 4:00I log onto a few more social sites, I blog,
-
4:00 - 4:03I check more news reports, I share some of those news reports,
-
4:03 - 4:05I go look at some videos,
-
4:05 - 4:10pretty typical day -- in this case, actually fairly pedantic --
-
4:10 - 4:13and at the end of the day, as my day winds down,
-
4:13 - 4:16look at my profile.
-
4:16 - 4:18The red dots have exploded.
-
4:18 - 4:21The gray dots have grown exponentially.
-
4:21 - 4:23All in all, there's over 150 sites
-
4:23 - 4:26that are now tracking my personal information,
-
4:26 - 4:29most all of them without my consent.
-
4:29 - 4:32I look at this picture and it freaks me out.
-
4:32 - 4:37This is nothing. I am being stalked across the Web.
-
4:37 - 4:39And why is this happening?
-
4:39 - 4:42Pretty simple -- it's huge business.
-
4:42 - 4:44The revenue of the top handful of companies in this space
-
4:44 - 4:46is over 39 billion dollars today.
-
4:46 - 4:49And as adults, we're certainly not alone.
-
4:49 - 4:52At the same time I installed my own Collusion profile,
-
4:52 - 4:56I installed one for my daughter.
-
4:56 - 4:59And on one single Saturday morning, over two hours on the Internet,
-
4:59 - 5:02here's her Collusion profile.
-
5:02 - 5:05This is a nine-year-old girl
-
5:05 - 5:09navigating to principally children's sites.
-
5:09 - 5:12I move from this, from freaked out to enraged.
-
5:12 - 5:17This is no longer me being a tech pioneer or a privacy advocate;
-
5:17 - 5:19this is me being a parent.
-
5:19 - 5:20Imagine in the physical world
-
5:20 - 5:24if somebody followed our children around with a camera and a notebook
-
5:24 - 5:26and recorded their every movement.
-
5:26 - 5:29I can tell you, there isn't a person in this room that would sit idly by.
-
5:29 - 5:33We'd take action. It may not be good action, but we would take action.
-
5:33 - 5:34(Laughter)
-
5:34 - 5:36We can't sit idly by here either.
-
5:36 - 5:38This is happening today.
-
5:38 - 5:40Privacy is not an option,
-
5:40 - 5:42and it shouldn't be the price we accept
-
5:42 - 5:44for just getting on the Internet.
-
5:44 - 5:47Our voices matter and our actions matter even more.
-
5:47 - 5:50Today we've launched Collusion.
-
5:50 - 5:53You can download it, install it in Firefox,
-
5:53 - 5:55to see who is tracking you across the Web
-
5:55 - 5:58and following you through the digital woods.
-
5:58 - 6:01Going forward, all of our voices need to be heard.
-
6:01 - 6:04Because what we don't know can actually hurt us.
-
6:04 - 6:06Because the memory of the Internet is forever.
-
6:06 - 6:08We are being watched.
-
6:08 - 6:11It's now time for us to watch the watchers.
-
6:11 - 6:12Thank you.
-
6:12 - 6:16(Applause)
- Title:
- Tracking our online trackers
- Speaker:
- Gary Kovacs
- Description:
-
As you surf the Web, information is being collected about you. Web tracking is not 100% evil -- personal data can make your browsing more efficient; cookies can help your favorite websites stay in business. But, says Gary Kovacs, it's your right to know what data is being collected about you and how it affects your online life. He unveils a Firefox add-on to do just that.
