Societal Impacts of Climate Change

  • 0:00 - 0:04
I have no doubt that the fundamental
  • 0:04 - 0:10
    sort of particularly on
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    [Music]
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    you
  • 0:22 - 0:23
I love the years of living dangerously
  • 0:23 - 0:26
because they tackled one of the main
  • 0:26 - 0:29
myths about climate change head-on one
  • 0:29 - 0:30
of the main myths is that climate change
  • 0:30 - 0:33
is a distant issue its in space
  • 0:33 - 0:35
it's only about the polar bear not about
  • 0:35 - 0:37
us and its distant in time it's only
  • 0:37 - 0:38
about future generations not about us
  • 0:38 - 0:41
this is a myth that isn't just among
  • 0:41 - 0:42
people who don't think climate change is
  • 0:42 - 0:45
real even many people who do view it as
  • 0:45 - 0:46
oh it's just you know we'll deal with it
  • 0:46 - 0:48
in the future the years of living
  • 0:48 - 0:51
dangerously said no we are dealing with
  • 0:51 - 0:53

it right now whether you like it or not
  • 0:53 - 0:55
and let us show you the faces of the
  • 0:55 - 0:57
people around the world who are dealing
  • 0:57 - 0:59
with it so we're not talking like we
  • 0:59 - 1:01
were 50 years ago 40 years ago I like
  • 1:01 - 1:03
this will be a problem it is a problem
  • 1:03 - 1:05
all the systems we have in place
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    agriculture urban environment. Everything
  • 1:08 - 1:11
we've set up has all been predicated on
  • 1:11 - 1:14
this very very stable climate which
  • 1:14 - 1:16
we're now starting to tinker with you
  • 1:16 - 1:19
know fiddle with the dials in an
  • 1:19 - 1:21
uncontrolled way the science is looking
  • 1:21 - 1:24
at the impact of that on the climate
  • 1:24 - 1:26
lead back on humans impact on sea level
  • 1:26 - 1:29
the impact on precipitation it's going
  • 1:29 - 1:30
to be the impact on food production it's
  • 1:30 - 1:32
going to be the impact of where people
  • 1:32 - 1:33
live right there is a pretty serious
  • 1:33 - 1:35
  • 1:35 - 1:37
  • 1:37 - 1:38
  • 1:38 - 1:42
  • 1:42 - 1:44

to muck about with this this is not an
ivory tower argument this is one where
the consequences are real we have to
really try and wake people up to realize
that this is happening it's very very
serious but we can solve it and we have
to do so not because you know it's going
to cut the economy but because it's the
  • 8:22 - 8:25
in some parts of the world has a toll in
  • 8:25 - 8:29
terms of people dying and for me this is
  • 8:29 - 8:31
just like fundamental we don't have time
  • 8:31 - 8:32
planet we live on it and so people that
  • 8:32 - 8:34
we love they're going to be effect
  • 8:34 - 8:45
