Guitar Quick Tip #13: Use Volume To Clean Up The Dirt (Guitar Lesson QT-013)

  • 0:05 - 0:07
    Hi. Howya doin'? Justin here
  • 0:07 - 0:08
with another quick tip for you,
  • 0:08 - 0:10
and today we are talking about
  • 0:10 - 0:14
using volume to clean up your dirty sound.
  • 0:14 - 0:15
Now, the volume I'm talking about
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    isn't the actual volume.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
It's the volume control on your guitar.
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    Now, it's kinda obvious
  • 0:20 - 0:22
to think that the volume control on the guitar
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    controls the volume, right?
  • 0:24 - 0:24
    It's in the name.
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    It seems pretty obvious, but
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    when you are using distortion,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
the volume control for the first part
  • 0:29 - 0:32
doesn't seem to alter much in the volume department,
  • 0:32 - 0:35
but it does alter stuff in the gain department.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
So, I'm using here a Suhr Badger 30
  • 0:37 - 0:38
with a little bit of gain on the amp
  • 0:38 - 0:42
and an Analog Man King of Tone pedal.
  • 0:42 - 0:43
and I've got it as a crunchy sound.
  • 0:43 - 0:49
    (plays)
  • 0:49 - 0:52
It's not real heavy, but, you know, heavy enough.
  • 0:52 - 0:53
But if i just back that volume off a little bit,
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    to, like, 6.5 or 7
  • 0:55 - 1:04
    (plays)
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    it's a lot cleaner.
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    Like just that little bit.
  • 1:06 - 1:14
    (plays)
  • 1:14 - 1:16
It's almost the same volume, not quite
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    but almost the same.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
And it's the kinda thing where if you are playing
  • 1:20 - 1:21
    in a band,
  • 1:21 - 1:22
particularly if you have a front-of-house engineer,
  • 1:22 - 1:24
it can be a great trick to be just backing
  • 1:24 - 1:27
your volume off a little bit for your rhythm guitar
  • 1:27 - 1:28
and when it comes time to do the solo
  • 1:28 - 1:30
to crank your volume control up
  • 1:30 - 1:31
instead of having to run round
  • 1:31 - 1:32
and jumping on a load of pedals.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
You know,if you're on your own
  • 1:34 - 1:35
and you don't have front-of-house there
  • 1:35 - 1:37
you probably need some sort of booster
  • 1:37 - 1:38
or to use a different pedal.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
But it's a really really useful tip
  • 1:40 - 1:43
and it's not just about the actual volume thing
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    It's really about tone.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
It's really a lot to do with the tone you are getting.
  • 1:48 - 1:49
You know, theres a lot of times when
  • 1:49 - 1:51
if you are playing and it sounds
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    a little bit crunchy,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
rather than jumping down and changing your pedal
  • 1:54 - 1:56
or your amp setting, you might want to try
  • 1:56 - 1:58
backing the volume off a little bit first.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
You know, a lot of times
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    particularly in rock,
  • 2:01 - 2:04
people tend to over distort stuff
  • 2:04 - 2:06
Like ACDC, the guitar sound is
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    not very distorted at all.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
It's just a really loud amplifier
  • 2:11 - 2:14
and you get a lot of this kind of natural disortion
  • 2:14 - 2:16
that happens but if you listen to the sound closely,
  • 2:16 - 2:19
it's not disorted, it's not gaining
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    like a - I don't know - a Joe Satriani
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    heavy rock sound or whatever.
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    They're completely different.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
Now, important here - I've talked about
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    before about exploring your gear
  • 2:29 - 2:30
    Different guitars and different amps
  • 2:30 - 2:34
and different pedals will all function slightly differently.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
So, like, Gibson guitars have got a quite
  • 2:37 - 2:39
a different effect when you turn the volume down.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
They don't seem to drop as much as quickly
  • 2:41 - 2:44
and then it seems to drop off a little more sudden.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
And so the Strats kind of work good for this.
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    Different amplifiers will work different
  • 2:48 - 2:52
and different pedals will have a different effect.
  • 2:52 - 2:53
depending on what pedals you've got on.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
So, this is the kind of thing you need to explore
  • 2:55 - 2:56
    on your gear.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
Like I've said to you, on this Strat
  • 2:58 - 2:59
it's like 6.5, 7 is where you get
  • 2:59 - 3:01
that kind of nice break off
  • 3:01 - 3:04
and its not dirty anymore - it's not as dirty.
  • 3:04 - 3:05
It's kind of a bit cleaner
  • 3:05 - 3:06
    and kind of crunchy sounding
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    rather than dirty sounding.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
But it 's different on all the different guitars
  • 3:10 - 3:13
so it's worth exploring on your instrument
  • 3:13 - 3:15
and seeing how it effects your sound.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
I hope that helps you with your tone journey
  • 3:18 - 3:20
I'll see you for lots more lessons very soon.
  • 3:20 - 3:21
    Take care of yourselves.
  • 3:21 - 3:24
    Bye Bye
