Concept Mapping: How to Start Your Term Paper Research

  • 0:07 - 0:11
    >> How do we start our
    research for a term paper?
  • 0:11 - 0:15
One way is to map out our
    ideas and identify some
  • 0:15 - 0:19
of our key concepts to develop
    our research question.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    Let's try an example now,
    considering the topic,
  • 0:22 - 0:26
    how do college students succeed
    and specifically get good grades?
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    Let's brainstorm about
    some of the factors that
  • 0:29 - 0:32
might affect students success at college.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
One of the things we need is money,
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    and there's several things that
impact on how much money we
  • 0:37 - 0:42
    have: jobs, loans, bursaries.
  • 0:42 - 0:47
Another factor that impacts on our
success at college is our outside life.
  • 0:47 - 0:54
Some of the aspects of outside
    life are, family and friends.
  • 0:59 - 1:03
Another idea to consider is our health.
  • 1:03 - 1:08
There are several factors that can
    impact on our health: exercise,
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    sleep, and our nutrition.
  • 1:17 - 1:22
    Other contributors to succeeding
at college are places for help.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
Where can I go for help?
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    There are several of those.
  • 1:29 - 1:35
    Libraries, writing or learning centers
are some of the places for help.
  • 1:35 - 1:40
    Another important consideration
    is our study habits.
  • 1:40 - 1:45
    Time management is one
    important consideration here.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    Now, we've mapped out
    some of the main factors
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    affecting succeeding at college
    and in particular good grades.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    Through the process of
    creating a concept map,
  • 1:56 - 2:00
we can see there are many factors
    that affect college students success.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    There are many research
    topics that we could develop.
  • 2:03 - 2:07
Let's pick one example and look at health,
  • 2:07 - 2:12
and in particular sleep and how it
    impacts on college students success.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
Now, we can take the idea we developed in
  • 2:14 - 2:18
    the concept map and create
    a research statement.
  • 2:19 - 2:23
Let's write the research statement as,
  • 2:23 - 2:26
I want to find information on
    whether there is a connection
  • 2:26 - 2:30
    between sleep and the grades
    obtained by college students.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    Let's look at it closer.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
The major ideas in a sentence are
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    the building blocks we will
    use to research our topic.
  • 2:38 - 2:42
    Sleep, grades, college students.
  • 2:42 - 2:47
    Each of these words identifies
    a concept we will search.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    Let's now take these
    concepts and brainstorm
  • 2:50 - 2:54
    about some synonyms or words
    that mean the same thing.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
    The first concept, sleep
    or sleep deprivation.
  • 2:58 - 3:02
We want to build that with grades.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
We could also try the word success,
  • 3:04 - 3:09
    truncate it to find the
    word success or successes.
  • 3:09 - 3:13
Why don't we also try the
    phrase academic performance,
  • 3:13 - 3:16
which also refers to student success.
  • 3:16 - 3:19
We'll build that with an AND,
  • 3:21 - 3:25
    college students or students.
  • 3:33 - 3:36
We can now take the search
    statement and bring it to
  • 3:36 - 3:40
    the database and try
    researching for this topic.
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    This gives you some
ideas on how you can use
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    concept mapping to start
    your term paper research.
