"Love Is a Loaded Pistol"

  • 0:06 - 0:09
I've been playing TED for nearly a decade,
  • 0:09 - 0:12
    and I've very rarely played
  • 0:12 - 0:15
any new songs of my own.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
And that was largely because there weren't any.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    (Laughter)
  • 0:20 - 0:22
So I've been busy with a couple of projects,
  • 0:22 - 0:24
and one of them was this:
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    The Nutmeg.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    A 1930s ship's lifeboat,
  • 0:28 - 0:30
which I've been restoring in the garden
  • 0:30 - 0:32
of my beach house in England.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    And, so now,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
when the polar ice caps melt,
  • 0:37 - 0:40
my recording studio will rise up like an ark,
  • 0:41 - 0:43
and I'll float off into the drowned world
  • 0:43 - 0:46
like a character from a J.G. Ballard novel.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    During the day,
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    the Nutmeg collects energy
  • 0:50 - 0:53
from solar panels on the roof of the wheelhouse,
  • 0:53 - 0:55
and from a 450 watt turbine
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    up the mast.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
So that when it gets dark,
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    I've got plenty of power.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
And I can light up the Nutmeg like a beacon.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
And so I go in there until the early hours of the morning,
  • 1:07 - 1:10
and I work on new songs.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
I'd like to play to you guys,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
if you're willing to be the first audience to hear it.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
    (Applause)
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    It's about Billie Holiday.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    And it appears that,
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    some night in 1947
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    she left her physical space
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    and was missing all night,
  • 1:32 - 1:35
until she reappeared in the morning.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
But I know where she was.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
She was with me on my lifeboat.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    And she was hot.
  • 1:45 - 1:55
    (Music)
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    ♫ Billie crept softly ♫
  • 2:15 - 2:17
♫ into my waking arms ♫

    ♫ in my ear ♫
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    ♫ "This time it's love" ♫
  • 3:27 - 3:30
♫ But love is a loaded pistol ♫
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    ♫ By daybreak she's gone ♫
  • 3:35 - 3:38
♫ Over the frozen river, home ♫
  • 3:41 - 3:44
♫ Me and Johnny Walker ♫
  • 3:44 - 3:47
♫ See in the new age ♫
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    ♫ alone ♫
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    ♫ Stay with me ♫
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    ♫ again tonight ♫
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    ♫ Billie, time, ♫
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    ♫ time is a wily trickster ♫
  • 4:06 - 4:09
    ♫ Still an echo ♫
  • 4:09 - 4:12
♫ in my heart says, ♫
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    ♫ "This time it's love" ♫
  • 4:25 - 4:33
    (Applause)
