Video 5: Advice for storytellers

  • 0:03 - 0:06
    - Remember, the goal of
this lesson is to get you
  • 0:06 - 0:09
thinking of yourself as a storyteller.
  • 0:09 - 0:12
    As you'll discover, telling
    stories can be challenging,
  • 0:12 - 0:14
so let's get a bit of advice
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    and encouragement from our artists.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    - My high school art teacher
    pointed out the drawings
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    of Michelangelo to me, and
    she pointed out specifically
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    that you see all these
    marks that he's left here,
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    these were the errors,
    these were the things
  • 0:28 - 0:30
where he was searching for the right mark
  • 0:30 - 0:33
and then he found the right
    line to draw the hand,
  • 0:33 - 0:35
but he didn't have to erase them,
  • 0:35 - 0:37
that was part of the search.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    And it's okay, it's actually
    part of the process.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
And so that's when, in fact, she was like,
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    "Get rid of your erasers,
    in fact, use your eraser
  • 0:44 - 0:46
"to draw, not to get rid of something
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    "because if you're
    messing up, then at least
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    "you're sure that you're
    actually making progress
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    "to something that can be
    better than where you started."
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    - It's okay that your idea isn't perfect
  • 0:57 - 1:02
right out of the gate and
    it's just about identifying,
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    is there something there emotionally
  • 1:04 - 1:08
that is drawing you to it and if there is,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    then there's something
there and you can just keep
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    working on it and changing
    it, but always remembering
  • 1:13 - 1:18
    what was that initial feeling
that drew you to that idea.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    - Ideas really, usually, when
you first come up with them,
  • 1:21 - 1:24
they're kind of more like notions.
  • 1:24 - 1:28
    That's kinda in the what
if, what if hmm hmm hmm hmm?
  • 1:28 - 1:33
And then the way you get
    to a solid actionable idea
  • 1:33 - 1:35
is that you just keep working on it
  • 1:35 - 1:37
and every time you do a version of it,
  • 1:37 - 1:41
every time you do a pass on
it, you get closer to the idea.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    - It's a lot of hard work
and it takes trial and error
  • 1:43 - 1:47
    to get that story right,
    because one thing that may
  • 1:47 - 1:50
affect you and you have an
    idea, is not necessarily
  • 1:50 - 1:54
    going to speak to somebody
    else and that's where
  • 1:54 - 1:59
figuring out the best way to
get them out of their head
  • 1:59 - 2:03
    and intellectualizing what's
being told them to feeling it
  • 2:03 - 2:08
    and getting in touch with
    their emotions so that they're
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    invested in what's
    happening to the character.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    - The good news is that if you love it,
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    if you like telling stories,
    if you like communicating,
  • 2:17 - 2:21
    if you like drawing pictures,
    you won't wanna stop,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    that's the great part,
and even if it feels like
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    you're not making progress,
you'll see a stack of drawings
  • 2:28 - 2:30
or you'll see a bunch of pieces of paper
  • 2:30 - 2:33
that have your words on them and I mean,
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    that's really impressive
    because you're making progress,
  • 2:36 - 2:41
    so you gotta keep practicing,
    it's as simple as that,
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    there's no easy way, and
    in fact it's really fun
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    if you really enjoy it.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    - Hopefully now you have a sense
  • 2:50 - 2:52
of a few what ifs you want to explore
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    and some worlds and
    characters to go with them.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
And in the next lesson, we'll
    dig deeper into developing
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    characters and how we
    approach that at Pixar.
