The self-assembling computer chips of the future

    Computers used to be as big as a room,
  • Not Synced
    but now they fit in your pocket,
  • Not Synced
    on your wrist,
  • Not Synced
    and can even be implanted
    inside of your body.
  • Not Synced
    How cool is that?
  • Not Synced
    And this has been enabled
    by the miniaturization of transistors,
  • Not Synced
    which are the tiny switches in the circuit
    at the heart of our computers,
  • Not Synced
    and it's been achieved
    through decades of development
  • Not Synced
    and breakthroughs
    in science and engineering
  • Not Synced
    and of billions of dollars of investment.
  • Not Synced
    But it's given us
    vast amounts of computing,
  • Not Synced
    huge amounts of memory,
  • Not Synced
    and the digital revolution
    that we all experience and enjoy today.
  • Not Synced
    But the bad new is,
  • Not Synced
    we're about to hit a digital roadblock,
  • Not Synced
    as the rate of miniaturization
    of transistors is slowing down.
  • Not Synced
    And this is happening
    at exactly the same time
  • Not Synced
    as our innovation in software
    is continuing relentlessly
  • Not Synced
    with artificial intelligence and big data,
  • Not Synced
    and our devices regularly perform
    facial recognition or augment our reality
  • Not Synced
    or even drive cars down
    our treacherous, chaotic roads.
  • Not Synced
    It's amazing.
  • Not Synced
    But if we don't keep up
  • Not Synced
    with the appetite of our software,
  • Not Synced
    we could reach a point
    in the development of our technology
  • Not Synced
    where the things that we
    could do with software
  • Not Synced
    could in fact be limited by our hardware.
  • Not Synced
    And we've all experienced the frustration
    of an old smartphone or tablet
  • Not Synced
    grinding slowly to a halt over time
  • Not Synced
    under the ever-increasing weight
    of software updates and new features,
  • Not Synced
    and it worked just fine
    when we bought it not so long ago.
  • Not Synced
    But the hungry software engineers
  • Not Synced
    have eaten up all
    the hardware capacity over time.
  • Not Synced
    The semiconductor industry
    is very well aware of this,
  • Not Synced
    and is working on
    all sorts of creative solutions,
  • Not Synced
    such as going beyond transistors
    to quantum computing
  • Not Synced
    or even working with transistors
    in alternative architectures
  • Not Synced
    such as neural networks
  • Not Synced
    to make more robust
    and efficient circuits.
  • Not Synced
    But these approaches
    will take quite some time,
  • Not Synced
    and we're really looking for a much more
    immediate solution to this problem.
  • Not Synced
    The reason why the rate of miniaturization
    of transistors is slowing down
  • Not Synced
    is due to the ever-increasing complexity
    of the manufacturing process.
  • Not Synced
    The transistor used to be
    a big, bulky device,
  • Not Synced
    until the invent of the integrated circuit
  • Not Synced
    based on pure crystalline silicon wafers.
  • Not Synced
    And after 50 years
    of continuous development,
  • Not Synced
    we can now achieve transistor
    features dimensions
  • Not Synced
    down to 10 nanometers.
  • Not Synced
    You can fit more than
    a billion transistors
  • Not Synced
    in a single square millimeter of silicon.
  • Not Synced
    And to put this into perspective,
  • Not Synced
    a human hair is 100 microns across.
  • Not Synced
    A red blood cell,
    which is essentially invisible,
  • Not Synced
    is eight microns across,
  • Not Synced
    and you can place 12 across
    the width of a human hair.
  • Not Synced
    But a transistor, in comparison,
    is much smaller,
  • Not Synced
    at a tiny fraction of a micron across,
  • Not Synced
    and you could place
    more than 260 transistors
  • Not Synced
    across a single red blood cell,
  • Not Synced
    or more than 3,000 across
    the width of a human hair.
  • Not Synced
    It really is incredible nanotechnology
    in your pocket right now.
  • Not Synced
    And besides the obvious benefit
    of being able to place
  • Not Synced
    more smaller transistors on a chip,
  • Not Synced
    smaller transistors are faster switches,
  • Not Synced
    and smaller transistors are also
    more efficient switches.
  • Not Synced
    So this combination has given us
    lower cost, higher performance,
  • Not Synced
    and higher efficiency electronics
    that we all enjoy today.
  • Not Synced
    To manufacture these integrated circuits,
  • Not Synced
    the transistors are
    built up layer by layer
  • Not Synced
    on a pure crystalline silicon wafer,
  • Not Synced
    and in an oversimplified sense,
  • Not Synced
    every tiny feature of the circuit
  • Not Synced
    is projected onto the surface
    of the silicon wafer
  • Not Synced
    and recorded in
    a light-sensitive material,
  • Not Synced
    and then etched through
    the light-sensitive material
  • Not Synced
    to leave the pattern
    in the underlying layers.
  • Not Synced
    And this process has been
    dramatically improved over the years
  • Not Synced
    to give the electronics
    the performance we have today.
  • Not Synced
    But as the transistor features
    get smaller and smaller,
  • Not Synced
    we're really approaching
    the physical limitations
  • Not Synced
    of this manufacturing technique.
  • Not Synced
    The latest systems
    for doing this patterning
  • Not Synced
    have become so complex
  • Not Synced
    that they reportedly cost
    more than 100 million dollars each,
  • Not Synced
    and semiconductor factories
    contain dozens of these machines.
  • Not Synced
    So people are seriously questioning,
    is this approach long-term viable?
  • Not Synced
    But we believe we can do
    this chip manufacturing
  • Not Synced
    in a totally different
  • Not Synced
    and much more cost-effective way
  • Not Synced
    using molecular engineering
  • Not Synced
    and mimicking nature
    down at the nanoscale dimensions
  • Not Synced
    of our transistors.
  • Not Synced
    As I said, the conventional manufacturing
    takes every tiny feature of the circuit
  • Not Synced
    and projects it onto the silicon,
  • Not Synced
    but if you look at the structure
    of an integrated circuit,
  • Not Synced
    the transistor arrays,
  • Not Synced
    many of the features are repeated
    millions of times.
  • Not Synced
    It's a highly periodic structure.
  • Not Synced
    So we want to take advantage
    of this periodicity
  • Not Synced
    in our alternative
    manufacturing technique.
  • Not Synced
    We want to use self-assembling materials
  • Not Synced
    to naturally form the periodic structures
  • Not Synced
    that we need for our transistors.
  • Not Synced
    We do this with the materials,
  • Not Synced
    and the materials do the hard work
    of the fine patterning,
  • Not Synced
    rather than pushing the projection
    technology to its limits and beyond.
  • Not Synced
    Self-assembly is seen in nature
    in many different places,
  • Not Synced
    from lipid membranes to cell structures,
  • Not Synced
    so we do know it can be a robust solution.
  • Not Synced
    If it's good enough for nature,
    it should be good enough for us.
  • Not Synced
    So we want to take
    this naturally occurring,
  • Not Synced
    robust self-assembly,
  • Not Synced
    and use it for the manufacturing
    of our semiconductor technology.
  • Not Synced
    One type of self-assembled material --
  • Not Synced
    it's called a block co-polymer --
  • Not Synced
    consists of two polymer chains
    just a few tens of nanometers in length,
  • Not Synced
    but these chains hate each other.
  • Not Synced
    They repel each other,
  • Not Synced
    very much like oil and water
    or my teenage son and daughter,
  • Not Synced
    but we cruelly bond them together,
  • Not Synced
    created an in-built
    frustration in the system
  • Not Synced
    as they try to separate from each other,
  • Not Synced
    and in the bulk material,
    there are billions of these,
  • Not Synced
    and the similar components
    try to stick together,
  • Not Synced
    and the opposing components
    try to separate from each other
  • Not Synced
    at the same time.
  • Not Synced
    And this has a built-in frustration,
  • Not Synced
    a tension in the system,
  • Not Synced
    so it moves around, it squirms
  • Not Synced
    until a shape is formed.
  • Not Synced
    And the natural self-assembled
    shape that is formed
  • Not Synced
    is nanoscale, it's regular, it's periodic,
  • Not Synced
    and it's long range,
  • Not Synced
    which is exactly what we need
    for our transistor arrays.
  • Not Synced
    So we can use molecular engineering
  • Not Synced
    to design different shapes
    of different sizes
  • Not Synced
    and of different periodicities.
  • Not Synced
    So for example, if we take
    a symmetrical molecule,
  • Not Synced
    where the two polymer chains
    are similar length,
  • Not Synced
    the natural self-assembled
    structure that is formed
  • Not Synced
    is a long, meandering line,
  • Not Synced
    very much like a fingerprint,
  • Not Synced
    and the width of the fingerprint lines
  • Not Synced
    and the distance between them
  • Not Synced
    is determined by the length
    of our polymer chains,
  • Not Synced
    but also the level of built-in
    frustration in the system.
  • Not Synced
    And we can even create
    more elaborate structures
  • Not Synced
    if we use unsymmetrical molecules,
  • Not Synced
    where one polymer chain is
    significantly shorter than the other.
  • Not Synced
    And the self-assembled structure
    that forms in this case
  • Not Synced
    is with the shorter chains
    forming a tight ball in the middle,
  • Not Synced
    and it's surrounded by the longer,
    opposing polymer chains,
  • Not Synced
    forming a natural cylinder.
  • Not Synced
    And the size of this cylinder,
  • Not Synced
    and the distance between
    the cylinders, the periodicity,
  • Not Synced
    is again determined by how long
    we make the polymer chains
  • Not Synced
    and the level of built-in frustration.
  • Not Synced
    So in other words, we're using
    molecular engineering
  • Not Synced
    to self-assemble nano-scale structures
  • Not Synced
    that can be lines or cylinders.
  • Not Synced
    The size and periodicity of our design,
  • Not Synced
    we're using chemistry,
    chemical engineering
  • Not Synced
    to manufacture the nanoscale features
    that we need for our transistors.
  • Not Synced
    But the ability
  • Not Synced
    to self-assemble these structures
  • Not Synced
    only takes us half of the way,
  • Not Synced
    because we still need
    to position these structures
  • Not Synced
    where we want the transistors
    in the integrated circuit.
  • Not Synced
    But we can do this relatively easily
  • Not Synced
    using wide guide structures that pin down
    the self-assembled structures,
  • Not Synced
    anchoring them in place
  • Not Synced
    and forcing the rest
    of the self-assembled structures
  • Not Synced
    to lie parallel,
  • Not Synced
    aligned with our guide structure.
  • Not Synced
    For example, if we want to make
    a fine, 40-nanometer line,
  • Not Synced
    which is very difficult to manufacture
    with conventional projection technology,
  • Not Synced
    we can manufacture
    a 120-nanometer guide structure
  • Not Synced
    with normal projection technology,
  • Not Synced
    and this structure will align
  • Not Synced
    three of the 40 nanometer guides,
  • Not Synced
    aligns in between,
  • Not Synced
    so the materials are doing
    the most difficult fine patterning.
  • Not Synced
    And we call approach
    "directed self-assembly."
  • Not Synced
    The challenge with directed self-assembly
  • Not Synced
    is that the whole system
    needs to align almost perfectly,
  • Not Synced
    because any tiny defect in the structure
  • Not Synced
    could cause a transistor failure,
  • Not Synced
    and because there are billions
    of transistors in our circuit,
  • Not Synced
    we need an almost
    molecularly perfect system.
  • Not Synced
    But we're going to extraordinary measures
  • Not Synced
    to achieve this,
  • Not Synced
    from the cleanliness of our chemistry
  • Not Synced
    to the careful processing
    of these materials
  • Not Synced
    in the semiconductor factory
  • Not Synced
    to remove even the smallest,
    nanoscopic defects.
  • Not Synced
    So directed self-assembly
    is an exciting new disruptive technology,
  • Not Synced
    but it is still in the development stage,
  • Not Synced
    but we're growing in confidence
    that we could in fact introduce it
  • Not Synced
    to the semiconductor industry
  • Not Synced
    as a revolutionary new
    manufacturing process
  • Not Synced
    in just the next few years.
  • Not Synced
    And if we can do this,
    if we're successful,
  • Not Synced
    we'll be able to continue
  • Not Synced
    with the cost-effective
    miniaturization of transistors,
  • Not Synced
    continue with the spectacular
    expansion of computing
  • Not Synced
    and the digital revolution,
  • Not Synced
    and what's more, this could even
    be the dawn of a new era
  • Not Synced
    of molecular manufacturing.
  • Not Synced
