Do Fish Have FEELINGS?

  • 0:00 - 0:02
Hi there! If you’re a kid
  • 0:03 - 0:07
and you like the Little Mermaid,
love to listen to a good SharkTale,
  • 0:07 - 0:09
want to free Willy or Find Nemo…
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    oh wait…there he is…
  • 0:13 - 0:18
or maybe you’re a fan of fish sticks, goin’ fishin’, or
just think something fishy’s going on,
  • 0:19 - 0:21
then this video is for you!
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    [Oh! I found him again]
  • 0:28 - 0:34
Hi it's Emily from Bite Size Vegan and welcome
to another vegan nugget. I’m so excited
  • 0:34 - 0:39
to be making another video just for you. So
far in my videos for kids we’ve talked about
  • 0:39 - 0:45
why we don’t drink milk, eat meat or
eggs, or honey, or wear wool,
  • 0:45 - 0:50
how you can be a superhero for the planet,
the people and the animals by being vegan
  • 0:50 - 0:55
and even heard from real vegan kids! You can
watch all of those videos later if you want
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    linked there and in the
    video description below.
  • 0:57 - 1:01
Now just like in my other videos I promise
that I’m not going to show you anything
  • 1:01 - 1:06
scary, that I’ll tell you the truth no matter
what and that I won’t talk down to you,
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    cause you’re super smart!
  • 1:08 - 1:13
Now in one of my other videos for kids we
talked all about why we don’t eat meat.
  • 1:13 - 1:18
When most people think about meat, they think
about animals like cows, pigs, chickens and
  • 1:18 - 1:20
other birds, maybe even goats and sheep.
  • 1:21 - 1:27
Strangely enough fish are often left out altogether.
So you may hear someone say they’re vegetarian
  • 1:27 - 1:32
(meaning they don’t eat meat), but they
do eat fish, which is pretty silly when you
  • 1:32 - 1:38
think about it. I mean, does that mean that fish
are plants? Have you ever seen a fish tree,
  • 1:39 - 1:46
    because I certainly haven’t! If you…do find
a fish tree…definitely let me know.
  • 1:47 - 1:52
Well vegans certainly don’t eat fish. If
you don’t know already, being vegan means
  • 1:52 - 1:57
you don’t eat animals or anything that comes
out of them like milk, eggs, cheese, or honey
  • 1:57 - 2:01
or wear anything from their bodies,
like wool or leather or silk.
  • 2:01 - 2:07
And the truth is fish are animals! Just like
dogs, cats, cows, pigs, chickens, and us!
  • 2:08 - 2:13
But being basically called plants isn’t
the only way fish get a bad rap.
  • 2:13 - 2:19
Many people think that fish can’t feel pain. There are
even teams of scientists who argue
  • 2:19 - 2:23
back and forth all the time with their big words and
    charts and graphs about
  • 2:23 - 2:25
whether or not fish feel pain.
  • 2:26 - 2:31
If you’re super into science, I have a whole
video about the battle of brainiacs,
  • 2:31 - 2:37
that you can watch here. But to make it simple, studies show that fish do, in fact feel pain.
  • 2:37 - 2:42
And like I’ve talked about in my other videos for kids, if someone can feel pain,
  • 2:42 - 2:48
then it’s not right to hurt them, even if they do live underwater and don’t look or act anything like we do.
  • 2:49 - 2:54
It’s hard to know what a fish is thinking
or feeling because they do look so different from us!
  • 2:55 - 3:00
When dogs are hurt or sad, they whine.
When cows are really scared, their eyes get all big.
  • 3:00 - 3:05
When cats are happy, they purr. And
even though we don’t speak dog or cow or cat -
  • 3:06 - 3:10
    or at least I don’t…if you do…that’s
    pretty awesome!—
  • 3:10 - 3:12
we still can still understand what they’re feeling.
  • 3:13 - 3:18
But how do you know if a fish is happy or
    sad? If they’re excited? Scared?
  • 3:18 - 3:24
How can you tell if they hurt? Sadly, what scientists
usually do to find out of someone can feel pain,
  • 3:25 - 3:31
is they hurt them. And we humans have
a habit of not believing something until we prove it.
  • 3:31 - 3:36
So even though fish have always
felt pain, scientists keep hurting them.
  • 3:37 - 3:42
It’s kinda like if the Earth was invaded
by aliens from the planet Fishtonia, who looked
  • 3:42 - 3:47
totally different than us and couldn’t understand
what we were saying. And just because we look
  • 3:47 - 3:53
different from them, the aliens decided that
we probably weren’t very smart and definitely
  • 3:53 - 3:58
don’t feel pain or emotions. How scary would
that be trying to tell them in the best way
  • 3:58 - 4:02
we know how that we do hurt, but being ignored
    because we’re so different?
  • 4:03 - 4:08
That may seem like a silly concept, but sometimes
the best way to know if what we do to animals
  • 4:08 - 4:12
is right is to imagine ourselves in their
    place.
  • 4:12 - 4:18
Of course what’s worse for fish than scientists
hurting them to see if they feel pain is the
  • 4:18 - 4:25
whole rest of the world hurting them for dinner!
A ton of people all around the world eat a
  • 4:25 - 4:32
ton of fish, and I mean actually tons and tons
of fish. And because people think that fish can’t
  • 4:32 - 4:35
feel pain, there are no laws about how they should
    be treated.
  • 4:36 - 4:40
It’s kinda like finding your favorite food
on your kitchen table but when to take a bite,
  • 4:40 - 4:44
suddenly your mouth hurts really bad! And
before you know it you’re pulled out the
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    front door and underwater.
  • 4:46 - 4:51
That would be pretty scary, right? Well that’s
what it’s like for fish when they bite onto hooks.
  • 4:52 - 4:56
And just like we can’t breathe underwater,
fish can’t breathe when they’re out of
  • 4:56 - 5:01
the water, so after they’re caught, whether
by a hook or by a net, they die
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    very slowly and very painfully.
  • 5:03 - 5:10
The worst part is fish are even skinned and
cut up alive. I can’t even imagine how terrifying
  • 5:10 - 5:11
    and painful that would be!
  • 5:12 - 5:17
Fish may not look like you or me. They may
not scream or cry like we do. But even you
  • 5:17 - 5:22
and I don’t scream the same way or cry the
same way or about the same things.
  • 5:22 - 5:27
Different people laugh at different jokes. Some people
will hide when they’re scared while others
  • 5:27 - 5:33
will act tough and pretend they’re okay.
In some countries shaking your head means
  • 5:33 - 5:34
    yes and nodding means no.
  • 5:35 - 5:40
And I don’t have to tell you that different
    people look..well…different! But when it
  • 5:40 - 5:45
comes down to it, no matter what language
we speak or how we shake our heads, we all feel.
  • 5:46 - 5:51
We can feel joy and happiness, we can
feel fear and sadness and we can hurt.
  • 5:51 - 5:58
And so can fish. And cows, and pigs, and chickens,
goats, sheep, dogs, cats, monkeys, camels,
  • 5:58 - 6:02
    parrots, rabbits, iguanas, elephants, zebras,
    whales, rhinoceroses, platypuses, dragons,
  • 6:02 - 6:04
    unicorns, jabberwocks and bandersnatches…
  • 6:07 - 6:09
oh I got... a little carried away there…
  • 6:11 - 6:17
But here’s the important thing. Fish can
feel pain. And hurting anyone who can be hurt
  • 6:17 - 6:23
is a pretty awful thing to do. They may not
talk like Nemo and Dori, but they do have
  • 6:23 - 6:28
mothers and fathers and sister and brothers.
They even form friendships, watch each others’
  • 6:28 - 6:31
backs, and are a whole lot smarter than we’ve
    always thought!
  • 6:32 - 6:40
But every year we humans kill about 2.8 trillion
fish for food. That’s a pretty huge number!
  • 6:40 - 6:47
Just think about this. This is an inch. If
you walked for 2.8 trillion inches, you could
  • 6:47 - 6:54
go to the moon and back almost 94 times, or
around the world almost 2,800 times!
  • 6:55 - 7:00
It’s hard to even imagine a number that
big! And it’s not only hurting the fish,
  • 7:00 - 7:05
but also our planet. Pretty soon there won’t
be any fish left in the sea!
  • 7:05 - 7:10
But here’s the good news. You can be a friend
to the fish and choose not to eat them!
  • 7:11 - 7:16
And you don’t even have to give up your favorite
fish dishes! There are vegan fish sticks and
  • 7:16 - 7:18
vegan prawns and other options to chose from.
  • 7:18 - 7:25
No painful hooks, no being pulled from their
home, no slow and scary deaths, and no being
  • 7:25 - 7:30
cut up alive. You can save them from all of
that. And even though they may not be able
  • 7:30 - 7:35
to thank you in a way you can understand,
your choice will keep little fish families
  • 7:35 - 7:38
    together. And that’s pretty amazing!
  • 7:38 - 7:43
I hope this was helpful. Let me know what
you thought of the video in the comments and

cover, feel free to tell me!

  • 8:18 - 8:19
    A f-II-sh
  • 8:20 - 8:22
What you you call a fish with no eyes?
  • 8:23 - 8:24
    A f-sh.
  • 8:25 - 8:26
    I’m gonna stop now…
  • 8:27 - 8:28
