Do Fish Have FEELINGS?
-
0:00 - 0:02Hi there! If you’re a kid
-
0:03 - 0:07and you like the Little Mermaid,
love to listen to a good SharkTale, -
0:07 - 0:09want to free Willy or Find Nemo…
-
0:10 - 0:12oh wait…there he is…
-
0:13 - 0:18or maybe you’re a fan of fish sticks, goin’ fishin’, or
just think something fishy’s going on, -
0:19 - 0:21then this video is for you!
-
0:22 - 0:24[Oh! I found him again]
-
0:28 - 0:34Hi it's Emily from Bite Size Vegan and welcome
to another vegan nugget. I’m so excited -
0:34 - 0:39to be making another video just for you. So
far in my videos for kids we’ve talked about -
0:39 - 0:45why we don’t drink milk, eat meat or
eggs, or honey, or wear wool, -
0:45 - 0:50how you can be a superhero for the planet,
the people and the animals by being vegan -
0:50 - 0:55and even heard from real vegan kids! You can
watch all of those videos later if you want -
0:55 - 0:57linked there and in the
video description below. -
0:57 - 1:01Now just like in my other videos I promise
that I’m not going to show you anything -
1:01 - 1:06scary, that I’ll tell you the truth no matter
what and that I won’t talk down to you, -
1:06 - 1:08cause you’re super smart!
-
1:08 - 1:13Now in one of my other videos for kids we
talked all about why we don’t eat meat. -
1:13 - 1:18When most people think about meat, they think
about animals like cows, pigs, chickens and -
1:18 - 1:20other birds, maybe even goats and sheep.
-
1:21 - 1:27Strangely enough fish are often left out altogether.
So you may hear someone say they’re vegetarian -
1:27 - 1:32(meaning they don’t eat meat), but they
do eat fish, which is pretty silly when you -
1:32 - 1:38think about it. I mean, does that mean that fish
are plants? Have you ever seen a fish tree, -
1:39 - 1:46because I certainly haven’t! If you…do find
a fish tree…definitely let me know. -
1:47 - 1:52Well vegans certainly don’t eat fish. If
you don’t know already, being vegan means -
1:52 - 1:57you don’t eat animals or anything that comes
out of them like milk, eggs, cheese, or honey -
1:57 - 2:01or wear anything from their bodies,
like wool or leather or silk. -
2:01 - 2:07And the truth is fish are animals! Just like
dogs, cats, cows, pigs, chickens, and us! -
2:08 - 2:13But being basically called plants isn’t
the only way fish get a bad rap. -
2:13 - 2:19Many people think that fish can’t feel pain. There are
even teams of scientists who argue -
2:19 - 2:23back and forth all the time with their big words and
charts and graphs about -
2:23 - 2:25whether or not fish feel pain.
-
2:26 - 2:31If you’re super into science, I have a whole
video about the battle of brainiacs, -
2:31 - 2:37that you can watch here. But to make it simple, studies show that fish do, in fact feel pain.
-
2:37 - 2:42And like I’ve talked about in my other videos for kids, if someone can feel pain,
-
2:42 - 2:48then it’s not right to hurt them, even if they do live underwater and don’t look or act anything like we do.
-
2:49 - 2:54It’s hard to know what a fish is thinking
or feeling because they do look so different from us! -
2:55 - 3:00When dogs are hurt or sad, they whine.
When cows are really scared, their eyes get all big. -
3:00 - 3:05When cats are happy, they purr. And
even though we don’t speak dog or cow or cat - -
3:06 - 3:10or at least I don’t…if you do…that’s
pretty awesome!— -
3:10 - 3:12we still can still understand what they’re feeling.
-
3:13 - 3:18But how do you know if a fish is happy or
sad? If they’re excited? Scared? -
3:18 - 3:24How can you tell if they hurt? Sadly, what scientists
usually do to find out of someone can feel pain, -
3:25 - 3:31is they hurt them. And we humans have
a habit of not believing something until we prove it. -
3:31 - 3:36So even though fish have always
felt pain, scientists keep hurting them. -
3:37 - 3:42It’s kinda like if the Earth was invaded
by aliens from the planet Fishtonia, who looked -
3:42 - 3:47totally different than us and couldn’t understand
what we were saying. And just because we look -
3:47 - 3:53different from them, the aliens decided that
we probably weren’t very smart and definitely -
3:53 - 3:58don’t feel pain or emotions. How scary would
that be trying to tell them in the best way -
3:58 - 4:02we know how that we do hurt, but being ignored
because we’re so different? -
4:03 - 4:08That may seem like a silly concept, but sometimes
the best way to know if what we do to animals -
4:08 - 4:12is right is to imagine ourselves in their
place. -
4:12 - 4:18Of course what’s worse for fish than scientists
hurting them to see if they feel pain is the -
4:18 - 4:25whole rest of the world hurting them for dinner!
A ton of people all around the world eat a -
4:25 - 4:32ton of fish, and I mean actually tons and tons
of fish. And because people think that fish can’t -
4:32 - 4:35feel pain, there are no laws about how they should
be treated. -
4:36 - 4:40It’s kinda like finding your favorite food
on your kitchen table but when to take a bite, -
4:40 - 4:44suddenly your mouth hurts really bad! And
before you know it you’re pulled out the -
4:44 - 4:45front door and underwater.
-
4:46 - 4:51That would be pretty scary, right? Well that’s
what it’s like for fish when they bite onto hooks. -
4:52 - 4:56And just like we can’t breathe underwater,
fish can’t breathe when they’re out of -
4:56 - 5:01the water, so after they’re caught, whether
by a hook or by a net, they die -
5:01 - 5:03very slowly and very painfully.
-
5:03 - 5:10The worst part is fish are even skinned and
cut up alive. I can’t even imagine how terrifying -
5:10 - 5:11and painful that would be!
-
5:12 - 5:17Fish may not look like you or me. They may
not scream or cry like we do. But even you -
5:17 - 5:22and I don’t scream the same way or cry the
same way or about the same things. -
5:22 - 5:27Different people laugh at different jokes. Some people
will hide when they’re scared while others -
5:27 - 5:33will act tough and pretend they’re okay.
In some countries shaking your head means -
5:33 - 5:34yes and nodding means no.
-
5:35 - 5:40And I don’t have to tell you that different
people look..well…different! But when it -
5:40 - 5:45comes down to it, no matter what language
we speak or how we shake our heads, we all feel. -
5:46 - 5:51We can feel joy and happiness, we can
feel fear and sadness and we can hurt. -
5:51 - 5:58And so can fish. And cows, and pigs, and chickens,
goats, sheep, dogs, cats, monkeys, camels, -
5:58 - 6:02parrots, rabbits, iguanas, elephants, zebras,
whales, rhinoceroses, platypuses, dragons, -
6:02 - 6:04unicorns, jabberwocks and bandersnatches…
-
6:07 - 6:09oh I got... a little carried away there…
-
6:11 - 6:17But here’s the important thing. Fish can
feel pain. And hurting anyone who can be hurt -
6:17 - 6:23is a pretty awful thing to do. They may not
talk like Nemo and Dori, but they do have -
6:23 - 6:28mothers and fathers and sister and brothers.
They even form friendships, watch each others’ -
6:28 - 6:31backs, and are a whole lot smarter than we’ve
always thought! -
6:32 - 6:40But every year we humans kill about 2.8 trillion
fish for food. That’s a pretty huge number! -
6:40 - 6:47Just think about this. This is an inch. If
you walked for 2.8 trillion inches, you could -
6:47 - 6:54go to the moon and back almost 94 times, or
around the world almost 2,800 times! -
6:55 - 7:00It’s hard to even imagine a number that
big! And it’s not only hurting the fish, -
7:00 - 7:05but also our planet. Pretty soon there won’t
be any fish left in the sea! -
7:05 - 7:10But here’s the good news. You can be a friend
to the fish and choose not to eat them! -
7:11 - 7:16And you don’t even have to give up your favorite
fish dishes! There are vegan fish sticks and -
7:16 - 7:18vegan prawns and other options to chose from.
-
7:18 - 7:25No painful hooks, no being pulled from their
home, no slow and scary deaths, and no being -
7:25 - 7:30cut up alive. You can save them from all of
that. And even though they may not be able -
7:30 - 7:35to thank you in a way you can understand,
your choice will keep little fish families -
7:35 - 7:38together. And that’s pretty amazing!
-
7:38 - 7:43I hope this was helpful. Let me know what
you thought of the video in the comments and -
7:43 - 7:46if you have other things you’d like me to
cover, feel free to tell me! -
