THE TWELVE AND THE SEVENTY - Our Call Is The Same As It Was Back Then!

  • 0:02 - 0:04
    The Call of Jesus
  • 0:05 - 0:09
Welcome to this lesson where we are
going to talk about the call of Jesus
  • 0:09 - 0:13
and how the call Jesus gave us in the Bible
    is the same today.
  • 0:13 - 0:19
What Jesus said in the Bible is the same
for you and me who live today.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
The second chapter in my book
"The Call of Jesus" is called
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    "The Twelve and The Seventy".
  • 0:25 - 0:30
In that chapter I show that there is
a difference between what Jesus said
  • 0:30 - 0:33
to the Twelve and what He said
    to the Seventy.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
But I don't want to focus so much
    about that here.
  • 0:36 - 0:40
You need to read the book to know
    what the difference is.
  • 0:40 - 0:45
What we need to understand is that
    the call Jesus gave us
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    is for us today.
  • 0:47 - 0:54
What Jesus said to the Twelve and to the
Seventy is for you and me who are living today.
  • 0:54 - 1:00
But before we are going to look at Luke 10,
    try to imagine
  • 1:02 - 1:05
that you have been walking with Jesus
for three and a half years
  • 1:05 - 1:08
and now Jesus wanted to leave you
  • 1:08 - 1:12
and He wanted to say something to you.
  • 1:12 - 1:18
The last words from Jesus, I believe
really, really, really reveal His heart
  • 1:18 - 1:21
in a very, very special way.
  • 1:21 - 1:28
And we can read those last words
in the end of the gospels, Matthew and Mark.
  • 1:28 - 1:36
In Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus spoke those
    last words. He said here:
  • 1:36 - 1:39
"All authority has been given to me
    in heaven and earth.
  • 1:39 - 1:43
    Go therefore and make disciples
    of all nations,
  • 1:43 - 1:47
baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
  • 1:47 - 1:52
    teaching to obey all things
    I have commanded you;
  • 1:52 - 1:56
and lo, I am with you,
even to the end of the age."
  • 1:56 - 1:59
These were Jesus' last words there.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
Jesus' last words in Mark were:
    (Mark 16:15-19)
  • 2:01 - 2:05
"Go into the world and preach the gospel
    to every creature.
  • 2:05 - 2:09
He who believes and is baptized shall be
    saved;
  • 2:09 - 2:12
but he who does not believe
    will be condemned.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    And these signs will follow
    those who believe:
  • 2:15 - 2:19
    In My name they will cast out demons;
    they will speak with new tongues;
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    they will take up serpents;
  • 2:21 - 2:25
and if they drink anything deadly,
    it will not hurt them;
  • 2:25 - 2:29
they will lay hands on the sick,
    and they will recover."
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    These were Jesus' last words.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
And this is revealing Jesus' heart.
  • 2:37 - 2:42
Not only His heart at that time,
but this is revealing Jesus' heart today.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
Why? Because He has not changed.
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    We have maybe changed.
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    The church has changed.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    Our focus has changed.
  • 2:52 - 2:55
But Jesus is the same yesterday,
    today and forever
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    and what He said there
  • 2:57 - 3:01
is also what He wants to say to us today.
  • 3:01 - 3:05
Jesus died for the whole world,
not only for you and me.
  • 3:05 - 3:09
He died for everyone out there.
    This is His heart.
  • 3:09 - 3:15
He came here to find, to seek
    those who are lost.
  • 3:15 - 3:22
And one thing He said there in
the end of Matthew, I want to read again.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
First He said in the end of Matthew:
    (Matthew 28:18-19)
  • 3:24 - 3:28
"All the authority has been given to Me
    in heaven and earth.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    Go therefore, make disciples
    of all nations."
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    But the question is: How?
  • 3:34 - 3:35
    How do we do that?
  • 3:35 - 3:39
How do we go out and make
    disciples of all nations?
  • 3:39 - 3:46
Do we go out, find a building,
    get a nice church,
  • 3:46 - 3:48
and get a nice worship band,
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    and then, hopefully,
the sinners will come to us.
  • 3:51 - 3:56
Is this how Jesus told us to do it?
  • 3:58 - 4:01
    I don't say it's wrong, but...
  • 4:01 - 4:04
it was, actually, not what Jesus
    told us to do.
  • 4:04 - 4:08
What we often forget is that Jesus
    did not only say:
  • 4:08 - 4:11
Go and make disciples of all nations.
  • 4:11 - 4:17
    He also explained how
    He wanted them to go.
  • 4:17 - 4:23
How He wanted them and us
to make disciples of all nations.
  • 4:23 - 4:26
We often forget that Jesus said
    so much more
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    then just: Go!
  • 4:29 - 4:35
So, let's look at it again and read a little
further down in Matthew 28. He said:
  • 4:36 - 4:38
"All authority has been given to Me
    in heaven and in earth.
  • 4:38 - 4:42
    Go therefore, make disciples
    of all nations, baptizing them..."
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    And then it comes.
  • 4:44 - 4:53
"and teaching them to observe (obey)
all things I have commanded you."
  • 4:54 - 5:00
    Jesus wanted those disciples
to make disciples of all nations,
  • 5:00 - 5:07
    baptizing them and teaching them
to obey everything He has commanded them.
  • 5:07 - 5:13
So, what Jesus commanded His disciples,
    not only in Matthew 28,
  • 5:13 - 5:16
but while He was walking with them
    on earth,
  • 5:16 - 5:19
when He left earth He said:
  • 5:19 - 5:22
Now what I have been teaching you
  • 5:22 - 5:27
you go, make disciples of other nations,
    baptizing them
  • 5:27 - 5:30
and teach them to obey the same.
  • 5:30 - 5:34
And then you go and make disciples
    of other nations
  • 5:34 - 5:36
and teach them to obey the same.
  • 5:36 - 5:40
    And now we are here
and it's the same for you and me.
  • 5:40 - 5:46
    What Jesus has commanded them
    have not changed.
  • 5:46 - 5:50
It's the same for you and me
    who are living today.
  • 5:51 - 5:55
My question is: Why don't we do it?
  • 5:55 - 5:58
Why are we so focused on going out
    and renting a church building
  • 5:58 - 6:03
and getting people to come to our church,
because this is not what He has commanded?
  • 6:03 - 6:11
Why are we so busy doing many other things
than doing what Jesus said to us in the Bible?
  • 6:12 - 6:16
It almost looks like it has changed,
    but when did it change?
  • 6:16 - 6:18
Did it change in year 500?
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    Did it change in 1500?
  • 6:21 - 6:24
Did it change when we came into
    the year 2000?
  • 6:24 - 6:27
Did Jesus suddenly change and said:
    Stop, stop, stop...
  • 6:27 - 6:32
I don't want you to do what I told you to do.
I want you to do this instead.
  • 6:33 - 6:37
    No. But let's be honest.
  • 6:37 - 6:42
Most people today are busy with church,
  • 6:42 - 6:44
    are busy with church activities,
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    are busy with programs,
  • 6:46 - 6:49
are busy with so many things,
  • 6:49 - 6:54
but they, actually, are not obeying
what we read Jesus was saying.
  • 6:55 - 7:00
They are so busy without taking the time
    to look at what, actually,
  • 7:00 - 7:03
    is Jesus wants to obey.
  • 7:04 - 7:08
And what was it Jesus said to His disciples?
  • 7:08 - 7:11
What was it He said to His disciples
    they should teach us,
  • 7:11 - 7:14
    so we may obey it?
  • 7:14 - 7:18
One of the places we read what Jesus
    said to His disciples
  • 7:18 - 7:23
that He wanted them to teach us
so we will obey it and teach others,
  • 7:23 - 7:28
so they will obey it is what we read
    in Luke 10.
  • 7:28 - 7:33
So, when we are going to read these words
    from Luke 10, remember
  • 7:34 - 7:40
that what He there said to them,
    He later said to them
  • 7:40 - 7:43
    that they should teach us
so we will obey the same.
  • 7:43 - 7:50
So, what Jesus says here is the same
for us who are living today.
  • 7:50 - 7:51
    And just be honest.
  • 7:52 - 7:56
Where do we find in these texts
    I'm going to read here
  • 7:56 - 8:00
that we should have nice, fine churches
    with professional worship bands
  • 8:01 - 8:05
and if we have a nice worship band
    and nice, fine church,
  • 8:05 - 8:07
the harvest would come to us.
  • 8:07 - 8:11
I don't read in the Bible that the harvest
was supposed to come to us.
  • 8:12 - 8:15
No, we were supposed to go to the harvest.
  • 8:15 - 8:18
And the harvest is ready and plentiful
    and waiting for us.
  • 8:18 - 8:21
    I don't say it's wrong to have a church
    building and meet,
  • 8:21 - 8:27
but the problem is: if we just end up there
and not obeying Jesus - we have a problem.
  • 8:27 - 8:30
Let's look at what Jesus said to
    His disciples
  • 8:30 - 8:35
and what He's saying to you and me
in Luke 10. Read these words.
  • 8:36 - 8:40
"After these things the Lord appointed
    seventy others, and sent them
  • 8:40 - 8:48
two by two before His face into
    every city and place
  • 8:48 - 8:51
where He himself was about to go.
  • 8:51 - 8:57
And He said to them, 'The harvest is truly
    great, but the laborers are few;
  • 8:57 - 9:01
therefore pray the Lord of the harvest
  • 9:01 - 9:04
to send out laborers into His harvest.
  • 9:04 - 9:10
Go your way; behold, I'm sending you
    out as lambs among wolves.
  • 9:10 - 9:15
    Carry neither money bag, knapsack,
    or sandals;
  • 9:15 - 9:18
and greet no one on the road."
  • 9:18 - 9:20
    Listen here.
  • 9:21 - 9:23
Where do people do that today?
  • 9:23 - 9:27
Where do people just come together
two and two and go out
  • 9:27 - 9:30
in the harvest that is great and plentiful?
  • 9:30 - 9:35
Where do we find people who are praying
the Lord of the harvest to send out workers,
  • 9:35 - 9:37
    as we are reading here?
  • 9:37 - 9:40
You know, the harvest is ready,
    the harvest is plentiful,
  • 9:40 - 9:42
there's nothing wrong with the harvest.
  • 9:42 - 9:44
    The problem is the workers.
  • 9:44 - 9:46
    We need to go out.
  • 9:46 - 9:48
And let's continue what He's saying.
  • 9:48 - 9:51
Because what does He want us to go out
    to do?
  • 9:51 - 9:54
He wants us to find somebody.
    He said here (Luke 10:5-11):
  • 9:54 - 9:58
"Whatever house you enter, first say,
    'Peace to this house.'
  • 9:58 - 10:04
And if a son of peace is there, your peace
will rest on it; if not, it will return to you.
  • 10:04 - 10:09
And remain in the same home, eating
    and drinking what they serve,
  • 10:09 - 10:12
for a laborer is worthy of his wage.
  • 10:12 - 10:15
Do not go from house to house.
  • 10:15 - 10:18
    Whatever city you enter,
    and they receive you,
  • 10:18 - 10:22
eat such things as they set before you.
  • 10:22 - 10:24
And heal the sick, and say to them,
  • 10:24 - 10:27
The kingdom of God has come near to you.
  • 10:27 - 10:31
But whatever city you enter, and they
    do not receive you,
  • 10:31 - 10:37
go out into the street and say,
'Even the dust of your city we wipe off us
  • 10:37 - 10:40
    as a testimony against you.
  • 10:40 - 10:45
Nevertheless, the kingdom of God has
    come near to you."
  • 10:46 - 10:49
These are some of the things Jesus
    was saying.
  • 10:49 - 10:52
That we should go out and find
    a person of peace.
  • 10:52 - 10:54
    Many people don't know what
    a person of peace is.
  • 10:54 - 10:57
They don't know what they are
    going out for,
  • 10:57 - 10:59
and therefore they are not going to find,
  • 10:59 - 11:01
what Jesus has called them to do.
  • 11:01 - 11:05
And He said what we should do
    when we find that person,
  • 11:05 - 11:08
that we should stay in their house,
    we should eat and drink.
  • 11:08 - 11:12
He said how we should heal the sick,
how we should share the gospel,
  • 11:12 - 11:14
how we should not go from house
    to house.
  • 11:14 - 11:17
He also said when people will not receive
    our message,
  • 11:17 - 11:20
take the dust off your feet and hands
    and move on.
  • 11:20 - 11:22
    It was what Jesus said.
  • 11:22 - 11:28
And I want to say to you,
in many years I have done church my way,
  • 11:28 - 11:31
I have done it the way most people did it,
  • 11:31 - 11:35
but some years ago I stopped doing it
    my way
  • 11:36 - 11:39
and I started to do it as Jesus is saying here
  • 11:39 - 11:42
    and that changed everything.
  • 11:42 - 11:49
It changed everything, not only my life,
but it changed those people around me.
  • 11:49 - 11:54
Yes, we don't live in Israel and many
    things have changed today.
  • 11:54 - 11:58
    The culture has changed,
    the technology has changed,
  • 11:58 - 12:04
and many things are different today,
but the call of Jesus is the same.
  • 12:05 - 12:10
    And one thing happens
    when we obey Jesus.
  • 12:10 - 12:16
Joy. We experience joy, we experience
excitement when God is using us.
  • 12:16 - 12:22
And when Jesus sent His disciples out
in Luke 10, we read later (Luke 10:17):
  • 12:22 - 12:28
    "They returned with joy saying:
'Lord, even the demons obey in your name."
  • 12:28 - 12:32
    They returned with joy.
  • 12:32 - 12:35
Let me read something from my book here.
  • 12:35 - 12:42
"What we need to realize here, is that
the seventy disciples came home rejoicing.
  • 12:42 - 12:45
This is what should be happening
    when we serve God.
  • 12:45 - 12:51
When we step out in faith on Jesus' Words
and see His Spirit work through us,
  • 12:51 - 12:55
it should bring forth a great joy!
  • 12:55 - 12:59
We should not be able to contain
    our excitement.
  • 12:59 - 13:04
I have seen this in so many people,
  • 13:04 - 13:07
where they have taken their first step,
  • 13:07 - 13:09
pray for someone for the first time,
  • 13:09 - 13:12
    shared the gospel with somebody
    for the first time,
  • 13:12 - 13:15
    baptize somebody in water
    for the first time,
  • 13:15 - 13:19
or baptize somebody with the Holy Spirit
    for the first time.
  • 13:19 - 13:21
    They cannot hide their excitement!
  • 13:21 - 13:24
They are full of joy because they have
    realized
  • 13:24 - 13:29
that God has used them to spread
    His Kingdom!"
  • 13:30 - 13:32
    Can you see it? Hallelujah!
  • 13:32 - 13:36
That joy, that joy, that joy, that joy
    is for you.
  • 13:36 - 13:40
That joy is for you, and when you
    start to obey Jesus' words,
  • 13:40 - 13:44
    you experience that joy,
    you experience you are alive.
  • 13:44 - 13:46
    Don't be frustrated.
  • 13:46 - 13:48
    Obey Jesus.
  • 13:48 - 13:51
Because the problem is that many people
    in churches are frustrated
  • 13:51 - 13:53
and losing their first love and their faith.
  • 13:53 - 13:56
I want to read a little more from my book.
  • 13:56 - 14:00
"An amazing revelation in Luke 10
is that this is for everyone.
  • 14:00 - 14:04
Jesus did not only give these commands
    to pastors
  • 14:04 - 14:10
or to people with special status
    or special calling or talents.
  • 14:10 - 14:16
The commands Jesus made in Luke 10
is both for young and for old people in Christ.
  • 14:17 - 14:22
You don't have to wait to get started to obey
Jesus in what He is saying here.
  • 14:22 - 14:26
Many Christians are sitting in their church
    feeling frustrated.
  • 14:26 - 14:29
They are frustrated because they are waiting.
  • 14:29 - 14:31
    They are waiting for something.
  • 14:31 - 14:35
They are waiting for their turn
    to be used by God.
  • 14:35 - 14:41
They are waiting for the pastor to notice them
and give them opportunity to be used by God.
  • 14:41 - 14:47
But I'm telling you that you don't need
    to wait anymore.
  • 14:47 - 14:53
Jesus has already given you His calling
    and commandment for your life,
  • 14:53 - 14:57
and it is so clear written in front of you."
  • 14:57 - 14:59
I want to say: This is for everyone.
  • 14:59 - 15:01
And when you understand what Jesus
    is saying,
  • 15:01 - 15:04
that the harvest is truly plentiful and ready,
  • 15:04 - 15:06
and what a person of peace is
  • 15:06 - 15:08
and how you can find a person of peace,
  • 15:08 - 15:11
how you can heal the sick,
how you can share the gospel,
  • 15:11 - 15:16
how you can baptize them in your bathtub,
    how you can make disciples,
  • 15:16 - 15:19
it's going to change, as I said,
    not only you,
  • 15:19 - 15:22
but many, many, many people around you.
  • 15:22 - 15:25
And what we want to do in this video series
  • 15:25 - 15:28
and what I want to do in the book
    "The Call of Jesus"
  • 15:28 - 15:31
is I want to spend a lot of time
    on Luke 10.
  • 15:31 - 15:36
I want to go through Luke 10
    verse, by verse, by verse.
  • 15:36 - 15:42
    And then give you examples
    how this look today
  • 15:42 - 15:47
and give you tools so you can start
to find that person of peace
  • 15:47 - 15:50
and heal the sick, and do what
    Jesus has commanded you.
  • 15:50 - 15:53
So, until next time we see,
    take a little more time
  • 15:53 - 15:58
to read Luke 9, Luke 10 and Matthew 10.
  • 15:58 - 16:02
Just be honest, look at it
and then look at your church,
  • 16:02 - 16:05
look at your life, look at what
    you grew up in
  • 16:05 - 16:08
and ask yourself: Have we've been.
    actually, doing it?
  • 16:08 - 16:12
Have we've been doing what Jesus
    has called us to do?
  • 16:12 - 16:16
Or we have been busy doing
    so many other things
  • 16:17 - 16:20
He has not called us to do?
  • 16:20 - 16:24
    And please share this video
and get the book, if you can.
  • 16:24 - 16:27
Get it on Amazon, get it on our website.
  • 16:27 - 16:31
If you don't have money for the book
    send an e-mail to us,
  • 16:31 - 16:35
    to TheLastReformation.com
and we can give you a link
  • 16:35 - 16:36
and you can get the book for free.
  • 16:36 - 16:40
We want this to come out
to as many people as possible.
  • 16:40 - 16:44
It's time to obey the call Jesus has given us,
  • 16:44 - 16:47
    because the harvest is great,
    the workers are few,
  • 16:47 - 16:49
and in that moment we start to obey
    His call,
  • 16:49 - 16:51
it's going to change the world.
  • 16:51 - 16:54
    God bless you!
    See you next time! Bye-bye!
  • 16:55 - 16:57
