NSP: Alex Borstein (2nd Final Draft)

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    - You should do standup, and
    I can help you.
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    - What're you talking about?
    - Talkin' about your act.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    - I don't have an act.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    - You will when we're done.
  • 0:09 - 0:14
This is Alex Borstein, a comic actress
    who has won two Emmys:
  • 0:14 - 0:18
one for "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
in which she plays Susie Myerson,
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    the tough, brazen manager
    of Midge Maisel,
  • 0:20 - 0:23
and I think I've heard her
    voice somewhere else before...
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    what is this?
    - This vooooice.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
Oh yeah, she voices Lois Griffin
    in one of the biggest
  • 0:28 - 0:30
animated shows of all time, "Family Guy."
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    (singing)
    - La la la!
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    Borstein's roots are in comedy
going way back to the early 90s
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    when she trained in improv
    at the ACME Comedy Theatre.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
From there she started writing for
    various series like "Casper"
  • 0:42 - 0:46
and "Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain,"
eventually writing print ads for Barbie.
  • 0:46 - 0:50
On the side her first official
    acting credits involved dubbing
  • 0:50 - 0:54
the voice of several monsters in
    "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers."
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    You've got Madame Woe,
    Bloom of Doom,
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    and Lipsyncher.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    - Oh my! Where are those
    gorgeous Power Rangers?
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    - I just wanna KISS THEM
    ALL TO PIECES!
  • 1:04 - 1:07
Her legacy in the "Power Rangers"
    canon didn't end there
  • 1:07 - 1:11
as she dubbed the recurring villain
Queen Machina in "Power Rangers Zeo."
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    - Absolutely brilliant.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
Then, Alex got two big breaks
back to back, the first of which
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    was becoming a regular cast
    member and writer on "MADtv."
  • 1:20 - 1:25
And not long after that, she was asked by
a then unknown animator, Seth MacFarlane,
  • 1:25 - 1:29
to voice the mother, Lois Griffin,
in a new animated series called...
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    - "Family Guy!"
  • 1:31 - 1:34
She would go on to become
a co-producer of the series as well.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
Besides Alex's regular gigs on these
two shows, she began to pop up
  • 1:37 - 1:41
in TV with comedic one-off characters
    in episodes of "Frasier"
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    and "Friends."
    - How could he leave me!?
  • 1:44 - 1:51
And she had two recurring characters
in "Gilmore Girls," like Drella the Harpist.
    - Tell it to the tip jar.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
Fun fact: Alex was originally cast to
    play Melissa McCarthy's character
  • 1:55 - 1:58
of Sookie in an unaired pilot
    of the show,
  • 1:58 - 2:02
    but unfortunately, couldn't continue
due to scheduling conflicts with "MADtv."
  • 2:02 - 2:06
As far as movies go, it wasn't
    unusual for Alex to play
  • 2:06 - 2:11
    characters who, instead of having
    names, had very specific descriptions:
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    "Milwaukee Mom with Photo..."
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    - Gee, you know what? This one,
I think it's more than enough.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    "Obnoxious Hummer Lady..."
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    - I do! Look at the size
    of this bad boy, huh?
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    ...and "Red Hair Woman."
  • 2:22 - 2:22
    - It's Martha.
  • 2:22 - 2:27
She had a name. He just said it.
Her name was Martha. Just call her Martha!
  • 2:27 - 2:30
But some of Alex's more prominent
    supporting roles usually involved her
  • 2:30 - 2:35
flexing her sass and attitude, like a
tour guide in 'The Lizzie McGuire Movie...'
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    - Rome! The eternal city! Did
no one read the info packet?
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    ...a no-nonsense secretary in
    'Good Night, and Good Luck...'
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    - Brent's not gonna be in
    for another hour...
  • 2:42 - 2:46
...and let's not forget about the
    Razzie Award-winning 'Catwoman,'
  • 2:46 - 2:50
in which she fit right in as
    the plucky best friend Sally.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    - If I screw it up, you can throw
    away the key.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
In more recent years, Seth MacFarlane
    has continued to feature her
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    in projects like 'Ted...'
    (screams)
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    ...and 'A Million Ways to
    Die in the West.'
  • 3:01 - 3:06
But one of Alex's favorite roles was in
the short-lived HBO dark comedy "Getting On"
  • 3:06 - 3:09
as the head nurse in a geriatric wing
    of a hospital.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    - It's not "a feces" it's
    just "feces."
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    - But it wasn't a gang of them,
    it was just one beast.
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    When this show was cancelled,
Alex almost threw in the towel
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    as far as on-screen acting.
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    - I don't wanna read your diary.
    - It's not my diary.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    - I don't care what your
    first time felt like.
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    ...until she was approached by
    "Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" creator
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    Amy Sherman-Palladino, whom
    Alex had previously worked
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    with on "Gilmore Girls."
  • 3:29 - 3:33
The rest is history, and Alex has continued
    making audiences laugh
  • 3:33 - 3:37
both behind the mic and in
    front of the camera.
  • 3:37 - 3:41
    (laughing)
