What's up, everyone? John Ferrara here,
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    Success Messenger!
  • 0:05 - 0:05
    Now, believe it or not,
  • 0:05 - 0:08
when it actually came time to
    doing this procrastination video,
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    guess who procrastinated?
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    All right, here we go.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    Gotta write this script.
  • 0:13 - 0:14
    All right.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    [telephone ringing]
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    Hello?
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    Hey, baby.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
Yeah, no, I can't talk right now; I'm
really busy -- I gotta write this script.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
Yeah, no, I'm sorry. Can't talk.
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    I'll talk to you later.
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    Okay, bye.
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    This girl's always interrupting me.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
So, why do we procrastinate in the first place?
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    Procrastination is a learned habit
    that's hardwired in our brain.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
We begin to have an argument between
    two parts of the brain:
  • 0:39 - 0:42
the prefrontal cortex, and the limbic system.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
The prefrontal cortex is the part of the
brain that wants to get - shit - done.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
The limbic system -- which is a more
primitive part of the brain --
  • 0:48 - 0:50
is responsible for motivation and pleasure.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
The prefrontal cortex reminds you that
you need to complete those boring tasks.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
The limbic system overpowers it with less
    important but more pleasurable tasks,
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    like checking Facebook, playing Xbox,
    or taking selfies.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    Since it's a learned behaviour,
    you can minimize it
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    with these five
    "How To Stop Procrastination" tips.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    Number One:
    Write a to-do list.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
Include the things that you usually put off,
  • 1:11 - 1:14
and don't include the things that you know
that you're eventually going to do anyway.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
And as you work through your day,
    check the things you complete
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    and you'll start to feel
    a growing sense of accomplishment.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
And to help you out, try to include
    timeframes and deadlines.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    Number Two:
    Complete your hardest task first.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    Self-made millionaire, author,
    and sales guru Brian Tracy
  • 1:27 - 1:29
wrote a book called "Eat That Frog".
  • 1:34 - 1:37
Now, the frog is only a representation
    of your hardest task.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    [sharp, spitting exhale]
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    [choking]
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    [panting]
  • 1:50 - 1:54
After you eat a frog, anything after that
is gonna look simple to you.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
And if you have two frogs,
    eat the uglier one first.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    Number Three:
    Remove distractions from your workplace.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
When your Facebook notifications going off,
  • 2:01 - 2:03
your Instagram followers are liking your shit,
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    your phone's ringing off the hook;
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    it's your friend; he wants to go out with you;
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    it's almost impossible to concentrate.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
Clean out distractions; remove any clutter
  • 2:10 - 2:12
or anything that's going to cause you
    to lose focus.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
Chances are, if your desk is
    covered with papers,
  • 2:14 - 2:17
you're going to want to clean them
instead of doing what you're supposed to.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    And Number Four:
    Don't be a perfectionist.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
If you're waiting for perfect timing,
    perfect visuals, or perfect supplies,
  • 2:22 - 2:24
you're just putting off completing the task.
  • 2:24 - 2:25
If it doesn't need to be perfect,
  • 2:25 - 2:27
stop, and move onto the next.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
If you yourself are a perfectionist,
  • 2:29 - 2:31
then once everything else is done
    on your to-do list,
  • 2:31 - 2:33
come back and finish perfecting it.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    Cause we're only human,
and we're allowed to make mistakes.
  • 2:35 - 2:36
    And Number Five:
  • 2:36 - 2:38
If your tasks seem too large
    and too frightening,
  • 2:38 - 2:41
then break it down into smaller,
    manageable tasks.
  • 2:41 - 2:44
It's going to seem less intimidating,
and you'll still get the same result.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
All right, everybody, that's it for today.
