Videos with Subtitles vs. Videos without Subtitles

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    Hello, In this video today,
    we're going to be talking
  • 0:03 - 0:05
to you about, videos with subtitles
  • 0:05 - 0:08
    versus videos without subtitles.
  • 0:08 - 0:12
    {music}
  • 0:12 - 0:13
But first of all, what are the pros of
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    having subtitles in your video.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
The first big one is that you're making it
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    accessible to people who have
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    harder hearing.
  • 0:20 - 0:25
It is estimated that by 2050, that over
70 million people across the world
  • 0:25 - 0:29
or one in every ten people, will have
    disabling hearing loss.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
So, if you think about that,
    then, one in 10 people
  • 0:33 - 0:35
might not be able to access your video.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
If you do not have subtitles on it.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
Another pro of having subtitles on your
    video is that,
  • 0:40 - 0:43
you're more likely to have audience that
    will understand your video
  • 0:43 - 0:46
If it is a video like this, where I'm
    talkng here
  • 0:46 - 0:50
sometimes, if it hasn't got subtitles,
    people can't understand it
  • 0:50 - 0:53
or, even if it's something a bit more
visual, when there is a voiceover
  • 0:53 - 0:58
the video may autoplay, by default have
the sound off, and people might be in a
  • 0:58 - 1:02
public place, where they don't want others
to hear the sound if they were on a public
  • 1:02 - 1:05
transport. Or maybe they are at work, and
they don't want to disturb everybody else.
  • 1:05 - 1:10
So there's so many different scenarios
where people want to consume content
  • 1:10 - 1:12
but don't want to disturb everbody else.
  • 1:12 - 1:17
And the study in the US, where nearly
    6000 Consumers were surveyed.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
69% of them view videos with the sound off
    in public places.
  • 1:21 - 1:26
25% of them watch with sound off in
    private places.
  • 1:26 - 1:31
Furthermore, 80% of consumers are more
likely to watch an entire video,
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    when captions are available.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
And another pro of having subtitles on
    your video
  • 1:36 - 1:40
is that you have the ability to have them
    in multiple languages
  • 1:40 - 1:45
And you can just have one video, where
you're able to toggle, maybe 10 to 15
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    different languages.
  • 1:46 - 1:47
Or just 1 or 2 different languages.
  • 1:47 - 1:52
The power is with the viewer, where they
can toggle on and off as wanted.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
So what are the downsides to having
    subtitles on your videos.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
Well, the truth is, there aren't that many
    downsides.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    maybe just slight niggles,
    if you're anything like me.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
and you're very fortunate to have
    good hearing.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
you might find it slightly distracting
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    when the subtitles are on.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    Sometimes , I have scenarios,
    where I'm at home
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    and I'm watching Netflix
    and I'm having dinner
  • 2:12 - 2:13
at the same time, that kind of scenario
  • 2:13 - 2:16
and the wife will put on subtitles
  • 2:16 - 2:18
and I personally find it quite distracting
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    'cause I end up just
    reading what the content is,
  • 2:20 - 2:24
    rather than actually taking notice
    of the visuals.
  • 2:24 - 2:26
and then I find myself getting
    kind of frustrated
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    because I'm missing,
    what's actually happening,
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    even though I'm
kind of reading it at the same time.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    And another possible
    downside really is well,
  • 2:32 - 2:36
    there's some extra time
to put in to create the subtitles
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    and have them embedded or
we'll have them as an option
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    to toggle on and off.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
Of course, then there will be
a cost to doing it as well.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    So my conclusion to
    subtitles being on a video
  • 2:46 - 2:49
versus subtitles not being on a video
  • 2:49 - 2:51
is that you need to cater
    for different scenarios
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    and different audiences.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    Whenever you create a video,
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    ideally you should create
    one where you don't have
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    any subtitles at all
  • 2:59 - 3:00
and those could be great if you're having
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    face-to-face meetings or presentations,
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    or maybe you're demonstrating
    something with video
  • 3:05 - 3:08
over a Zoom call, when you know
all the people can hear you,
  • 3:08 - 3:10
having a version with closed captions
  • 3:10 - 3:13
    is also fantastic because
you can have those go on
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    social media and they
    will automatically appear
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    when the sound is off
  • 3:17 - 3:19
and the third scenario is to have a video
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    where the subtitles are
    hard embedded on the video.
  • 3:22 - 3:26
So that means it will play
    regardless of any platform
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    that it's on.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    You're not at the mercy
    of people toggling on
  • 3:29 - 3:32
and off or auto play features kicking in.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    If you've got any
    thoughts or any questions,
  • 3:35 - 3:37
leave them down below in the comments
  • 3:37 - 3:39
and we'll be happy to answer any of those.
  • 3:39 - 3:40
    Thanks very much for watching
  • 3:40 - 3:41
and I hope you found it useful.
  • 3:41 - 3:46
    {end music}
