-
Not Synced
A few years ago I found
myself in Kigali, Rwanda
-
Not Synced
presenting a plan to bring
off-grid solar electricity
-
Not Synced
to 10 million low-income East Africans.
-
Not Synced
As I waited to speak
to the President and his ministers,
-
Not Synced
I thought about how I'd arrived
in that same place 30 years before.
-
Not Synced
A 25-year-old who left
her career in banking
-
Not Synced
to co-found the nation's first
microfinance bank
-
Not Synced
with a small group of Rwandan women.
-
Not Synced
And that happened just a few months
after women had gained the right
-
Not Synced
to open a bank account
without their husband's signature.
-
Not Synced
Just before I got on stage,
-
Not Synced
a young woman approached me.
-
Not Synced
"Ms. Novogratz," she said,
-
Not Synced
"I think you knew my Auntie."
-
Not Synced
"Really?
-
Not Synced
What was her name?"
-
Not Synced
She said, "Felicula."
-
Not Synced
I could feel tears well.
-
Not Synced
One of the first women
parliamentarians in the country,
-
Not Synced
Felicula was a co-founder,
-
Not Synced
but soon after we'd established the bank,
-
Not Synced
Felicula was killed in a mysterious
hit-and-run accident.
-
Not Synced
Some associated her death
to a policy she had sponsored
-
Not Synced
to abolish bride price,
-
Not Synced
or the practice of paying a man
for the hand of his daughter in marriage.
-
Not Synced
I was devastated by her death.
-
Not Synced
And then a few years after that,
-
Not Synced
after I'd left hte country,
-
Not Synced
Rwanda exploded in genocide.
-
Not Synced
And I have to admit,
-
Not Synced
there were times when I thought about
all the work so many had done
-
Not Synced
and I wondered what it had amounted to.
-
Not Synced
I turned back to the woman.
-
Not Synced
"I'm sorry, would you tell me
who you are again?"
-
Not Synced
She said, "Yes, my name is Monique
-
Not Synced
and I'm the Deputy Governor
of Rwanda's National Bank."
-
Not Synced
If you had told me when were
just getting started
-
Not Synced
that within a single generation,
-
Not Synced
a young woman will go on to help lead
her nation's financial sector,
-
Not Synced
I'm not sure I would have believed you.
-
Not Synced
And I understood that I was back
in that same place
-
Not Synced
to continue work Felicula had started
but could not complete in her lifetime.
-
Not Synced
And that it was to me to recommit
to dreams so big I might not complete them
-
Not Synced
in my lifetime.
-
Not Synced
That night I decided to write
a letter to the next generation
-
Not Synced
because so many have passed on
their wisdom and knowledge to me,
-
Not Synced
because I feel a growing sense of urgency
-
Not Synced
that I might not finish
the work I came to do.
-
Not Synced
And because I want to pass that forward
-
Not Synced
to everyone who wants
to create change in this world
-
Not Synced
in ways that only they can do.
-
Not Synced
That generation is in the streets.
-
Not Synced
They're crying urgently
for wholesale change
-
Not Synced
against racial injustice,
-
Not Synced
religious and ethnic persecution,
-
Not Synced
catastrophic climate change
-
Not Synced
and the cruel inequality
-
Not Synced
that has left us more divided
-
Not Synced
and divisive than ever in my lifetime.
-
Not Synced
But what would I say to them?
-
Not Synced
I'm a builder,
-
Not Synced
so I started by focusing
on technical fixes,
-
Not Synced
but our problems are too interdependent,
-
Not Synced
too entangled.
-
Not Synced
We need more than a system shift.
-
Not Synced
We need a mind shift.
-
Not Synced
Plato wrote that a country
cultivates what it honors.
-
Not Synced
For too long, we have defined success
based on money, power and fame.
-
Not Synced
Now we have to start the hard,
long work of moral revolution.
-
Not Synced
By that I mean putting our shared humanity
-
Not Synced
and the sustainability of the earth
at the center of our systems,
-
Not Synced
and prioritizing the collective we,
-
Not Synced
not the individual I.
-
Not Synced
What if each of us gave more
to the world than we took from it?
-
Not Synced
Everything would change.
-
Not Synced
Now, cynics might say
that sounds too idealistic,
-
Not Synced
but cynics don't create the future.
-
Not Synced
And though I've learned the folly
of unbridled optimism,
-
Not Synced
I stand with those who hold
to hard-edged hope.
-
Not Synced
-
Not Synced
I know that change is possible.
-
Not Synced
The entrepreneur and change agents
with whom my team and I have worked
-
Not Synced
have impacted more than 300 million
low-income people,
-
Not Synced
and sometimes we shaped entire
sectors to include the poor.
-
Not Synced
But you can't really talk
about moral revolution
-
Not Synced
without grounding it
in practicality and meaning.
-
Not Synced
And that requires an entirely
new set of operating principles.
-
Not Synced
Let me share just three.
-
Not Synced
The first is moral imagination.
-
Not Synced
Too often we use the lens
only of our own imagination,
-
Not Synced
even when designing solutions
-
Not Synced
for people whose lives are completely
different from our own.
-
Not Synced
Moral imagination starts by seeing
others as equal to ourselves,
-
Not Synced
neither above or below us,
-
Not Synced
neither idealizing or victimizing.
-
Not Synced
It required immersing
in the lives of others,
-
Not Synced
understanding the structures
that get in their way,
-
Not Synced
and being honest about where
they might be holding themselves back.
-
Not Synced
That requires deep listening
from a place on inquiry,
-
Not Synced
not certainty.
-
Not Synced
Several years ago I sat with a group
of women weavers,
-
Not Synced
outside in a rural village in Pakistan.
-
Not Synced
The day was hot.
-
Not Synced
Over 120 degrees in the shade.
-
Not Synced
I wanted to tell the women about
a company my organization had invested in
-
Not Synced
that was bringing solar light to millions
of people across India and East Africa,
-
Not Synced
and I'd seen the transformative
power of that light
-
Not Synced
to allow people to do things so many
of us just take for granted.
-
Not Synced
"We have this light" I said,
-
Not Synced
"costs about seven dollars.
-
Not Synced
People say it's amazing.
-
Not Synced
If we could convince the company
to bring those products to Pakistan,
-
Not Synced
would you all be interested?"
-
Not Synced
The women stared,
-
Not Synced
and then a big woman whose hands
knew hard work looked at me,
-
Not Synced
wiped the sweat off her face and said,
-
Not Synced
"We don't want a light.
-
Not Synced
We're hot.
-
Not Synced
Bring us a fan."
-
Not Synced
"Fan," I said.
-
Not Synced
"We don't have a fan.
-
Not Synced
We have a light.
-
Not Synced
But if you had this light,
-
Not Synced
your kids could study at night,
-
Not Synced
you could work more -- "
-
Not Synced
She cut me off.
-
Not Synced
"We work enough.
-
Not Synced
We're hot.
-
Not Synced
Bring us a fan."
-
Not Synced
That straight-talking conversation
deepened my moral imaginaton.
-
Not Synced
And I remember lying, sweltering
in my bedroom in my tiny guest house
-
Not Synced
that night
-
Not Synced
so grateful for the clickety-clack
of the fan overhead.
-
Not Synced
And I thought, "Of course.
-
Not Synced
Electricity.
-
Not Synced
A fan.
-
Not Synced
Dignity."
-
Not Synced
And when I now visit our companies
-
Not Synced
who've reached over 100
million people with light and electricity
-
Not Synced
and it's a really hot place,
-
Not Synced
and if there's a rooftop system,
-
Not Synced
there's also a fan.
-
Not Synced
But moral imagination is also needed
to rebuilt and heal our countries.
-
Not Synced
My nation is roiling
as it finally confronts
-
Not Synced
what it's not wanted to see.
-
Not Synced
It would be impossible to deny
the legacy of American slavery
-
Not Synced
if all of us truly immersed
in the lives of Black people.
-
Not Synced
Every nation begins the process of healing
-
Not Synced
when its people begin to see each other
-
Not Synced
and to understand that it is in that work
that are planted the seeds
-
Not Synced
of our individual
and collective transformation.
-
Not Synced
Now that requires the light and shadow,
-
Not Synced
the good and evil that exist
in every human being.
-
Not Synced
In our world we have to learn
to partner with those
-
Not Synced
even whom we consider our adversaries.
-
Not Synced
This leads to the second princple:
-
Not Synced
holding opposing values in tension.
-
Not Synced
Too many of our leaders today
stand on one corner or the other,
-
Not Synced
shouting.
-
Not Synced
Moral leaders reject the wall
of either/or.
-
Not Synced
They're willing to acknowlege a truth
or even a partial truth
-
Not Synced
in what the other side believes.
-
Not Synced
And they gain trust by making
pricinpled decisions
-
Not Synced
in service of other people,
-
Not Synced
not themselves.
-
Not Synced
To succeed in my work has required
holding the tension
-
Not Synced
between the power of markets
to enable innovation and prosperity
-
Not Synced
and their peril,
-
Not Synced
to allow for exclusion
and sometimes exploitation.
-
Not Synced
Those who see the sole purpose
of business as profit
-
Not Synced
are not comfortable with that tension,
-
Not Synced
nor are those who have no trust
in business at all.
-
Not Synced
But standing on either side
negates the creative, generative potential
-
Not Synced
of learning to use markets
without being seduced my them.
-
Not Synced
Take chocolate.
-
Not Synced
It's a hundred-billion dollar industry
-
Not Synced
dependent on the labor of about
five million small-holder farming families
-
Not Synced
who receive only a tiny fraction
of that 100 billion.
-
Not Synced
In fact, 90 percent of them make
under two dollars a day.
-
Not Synced
But there's a generation
of new entrepreneurs
-
Not Synced
that is trying to change that.
-
Not Synced
They start by understanding
the production costs of the farmers.
-
Not Synced
They agree to a price that allows
the farmers to actually earn income
-
Not Synced
in a way that will sustain their lives.
-
Not Synced
Sometimes including revenue-share
and ownership models,
-
Not Synced
building a community of trust.
-
Not Synced
Now are these companies as profitable
-
Not Synced
as those that focus
solely on shareholder value?
-
Not Synced
Possibly not in the short term.
-
Not Synced
But these entrepreneurs are focused
on solving problems.
-
Not Synced
They're tired of easy slogans
like doing well by doing good.
-
Not Synced
They know they have to be
financially sustainable
-
Not Synced
and they are insisting on including
the poor and the vulnerable
-
Not Synced
in their definition of success.
-
Not Synced
And that brings me to the third principle:
-
Not Synced
accompaniment.
-
Not Synced
It's actually a Jesuit term
that means to walk alongside,
-
Not Synced
or hold a mirror to you,
-
Not Synced
help you see your potential,
-
Not Synced
maybe more than you see it yourself.
-
Not Synced
I'll take on your problem
but I can't solve it for you --
-
Not Synced
that you have to learn to do.
-
Not Synced
For example, in Harlem
there's an organization
-
Not Synced
called City Healthworks
that hires local residents
-
Not Synced
with no previous health care experience,
-
Not Synced
trains them to work with other residents
-
Not Synced
so that they can better control
chronic diseases like gout,
-
Not Synced
hypertension,
-
Not Synced
diabetes.
-
Not Synced
I had the great pleasure of meeting
Destiny Belton,
-
Not Synced
one of the health workers,
-
Not Synced
who explained her job to me.
-
Not Synced
She said that she checks in on clients,
-
Not Synced
checks their vital signs,
-
Not Synced
takes them grocery shopping,
-
Not Synced
goes on long walks,
-
Not Synced
has conversations.
-
Not Synced
She told me, "I let them know
somebody has their back."
-
Not Synced
And the results have been astounding.
-
Not Synced
Patients are healthier,
-
Not Synced
hospitals less burdened.
-
Not Synced
As for Destiny,
-
Not Synced
she tells me her family
and she are healthier.
-
Not Synced
And, she adds, "I love that I get
to contribute to my community."
-
Not Synced
All of us yearn to be seen,
-
Not Synced
to count.
-
Not Synced
The work of change,
-
Not Synced
of moral revolution,
-
Not Synced
is hard.
-
Not Synced
But we don't change in the easy times.
-
Not Synced
We change in the difficult times.
-
Not Synced
In fact, I've come to see discomfort
as a proxy for progress.
-
Not Synced
But there's one more thing.
-
Not Synced
There's something I wish I'd known
when I was just starting out
-
Not Synced
so many years ago.
-
Not Synced
No matter how hard it gets,
-
Not Synced
there's always beauty to be found.
-
Not Synced
I remember now what seems
a long time ago
-
Not Synced
spending an entire day talking
to woman after woman
-
Not Synced
in the Methari Valley slum
in Nairobi, Kenya.
-
Not Synced
I listened to their stories
of struggle and survival
-
Not Synced
as they talked about losing children,
-
Not Synced
of fighting violence and hunger,
-
Not Synced
sometimes feeling like
they wouldn't even survive.
-
Not Synced
And right before I left,
-
Not Synced
a huge rainstorm poured down.
-
Not Synced
And I was sitting in my little car
as the wheels stuck in the mud
-
Not Synced
thinking I'm never getting out of here,
-
Not Synced
when suddenly there was
a tap on my window --
-
Not Synced
a woman who was beckoning
me to follow her,
-
Not Synced
and I did.
-
Not Synced
Jumped out through the rainstorm,
-
Not Synced
we went down this little muddy path,
-
Not Synced
through a rickety metal door,
-
Not Synced
inside a shack
-
Not Synced
where a group of women
were dancing with abandon.
-
Not Synced
I jumped in and found myself lost
in the rhythm and the color and the smiles
-
Not Synced
and suddenly I realized this is what
we do as human beings.
-
Not Synced
When we're broken,
-
Not Synced
when we feel that we are failing
or are in despair,
-
Not Synced
we dance.
-
Not Synced
We sing.
-
Not Synced
We pray.
-
Not Synced
Beauty resides too in showing up.
-
Not Synced
In paying attention
-
Not Synced
and being kind when we feel
like being anything but kind.
-
Not Synced
Look at the explosion of art
and music and poetry
-
Not Synced
in this moment of our collective crisis.
-
Not Synced
It is in the darkest times
-
Not Synced
that we have the chance
to find our deepest beauty.
-
Not Synced
So let this be our moment
-
Not Synced
to move forward
-
Not Synced
with the fierce urgency
of a new generation,
-
Not Synced
fortified with our most profound
and collective wisdom.
-
Not Synced
And ask yourself:
-
Not Synced
what can you do with the rest of today
-
Not Synced
and the rest of your time
-
Not Synced
to give back more
to the world than you take?
-
Not Synced
Thank you.
