Clive Wearing - The man with no short-term memory
-
0:06 - 0:08One man is consigned to live
-
0:08 - 0:10entirely within the present with
-
0:10 - 0:15terrible consequences. Clive
-
0:16 - 0:17Wearing has the worst case of
-
0:18 - 0:24amnesia ever known. Twenty
-
0:24 - 0:26years ago he lost his memory
-
0:27 - 0:28and now his wife Deborah is the
-
0:28 - 0:31only person he recognizes.
-
0:43 - 0:45Clive- Ah ahah, oh yay! Ah ha
-
0:45 - 0:46ha ha ha
-
0:48 - 0:49Deborah- Clive really only has
-
0:49 - 0:52less than 30 seconds memory
-
0:52 - 0:54and sometimes its perhaps as
-
0:54 - 0:57little as seven seconds. Its as
-
0:57 - 0:58little as a sentence.
-
0:58 - 1:00Deborah- I am going to see
-
1:00 - 1:02your sister Adele, her daughters
-
1:02 - 1:03got married recently.
-
1:03 - 1:03Clive- Oh has she?
-
1:03 - 1:05Deborah- In New Zealand and
-
1:05 - 1:06so they are having a party
-
1:06 - 1:08Clive- Funny how ladies
-
1:08 - 1:10require a different title when
-
1:10 - 1:10they get married.
-
1:11 - 1:11Deborah- Do you know who
-
1:11 - 1:12I am going to go see
-
1:12 - 1:13tomorrow?
-
1:14 - 1:15Clive- Buckingham Palace?
-
1:15 - 1:16Deborah- No, really guess.
-
1:16 - 1:16Clive- I dont know.
-
1:16 - 1:17Deborah- You dont know?
-
1:17 - 1:18Adele.
-
1:18 - 1:19Clive- Oh is she?
-
1:19 - 1:19Deborah- No, Do you know
-
1:19 - 1:20why I am going?
-
1:20 - 1:21Clive- No
-
1:21 - 1:22Deborah- She is having a
-
1:22 - 1:23party at her house tomorrow.
-
1:23 - 1:24Clive- It is her birthday is it?
-
1:24 - 1:25Deborah- No, do you know
-
1:25 - 1:26why?
-
1:26 - 1:27Clive- No
-
1:27 - 1:27Deborah- It is to do with her
-
1:27 - 1:28daughter
-
1:29 - 1:29Clive- Who is she?
-
1:30 - 1:31Deborah -Do you know why
-
1:31 - 1:32her daughter is having a party?
-
1:32 - 1:33Clive- No.
-
1:33 - 1:33Deborah- Guess.
-
1:33 - 1:34Clive- No idea.
-
1:34 - 1:35Deborah- She got married.
-
1:35 - 1:35Clive- Oh! Has she?
-
1:35 - 1:36Deborah- She just got
-
1:36 - 1:37married. Do you know what
-
1:37 - 1:38country she got married in?
-
1:38 - 1:39Clive- No idea.
-
1:39 - 1:40Deborah- In New Zealand.
-
1:40 - 1:41Clive- Oh, has she?
-
1:41 - 1:41Deborah- Yeah
-
1:42 - 1:44The sentence he is in he would
-
1:44 - 1:46have probably forgotten the
-
1:46 - 1:48sentence before you as him a
-
1:48 - 1:50question and he will give you
-
1:50 - 1:52an answer, but while he is
-
1:52 - 1:54giving the answer hes already
-
1:54 - 1:57forgotten the question. That
-
1:57 - 1:58is how short it is.
-
1:59 - 1:59Deborah- I am going to see
-
1:59 - 2:00your kids tomorrow.
-
2:00 - 2:01Clive- Youre going to see my
-
2:01 - 2:01kids?
-
2:01 - 2:02Deborah- Yeah, your children.
-
2:02 - 2:03Clive- What are they up to
-
2:03 - 2:04now?
-
2:04 - 2:05Deborah- Do you know what
-
2:05 - 2:05they are up to now?
-
2:05 - 2:06Clive- No, no, no.
-
2:06 - 2:06Deborah- Guess what you
-
2:06 - 2:07think they are up to?
-
2:07 - 2:08Clive- I have no idea. I
-
2:08 - 2:09couldnt guess. I dont know
-
2:09 - 2:10what theyre O-Levels were,
-
2:10 - 2:11they hadnt got their O-Levels
-
2:11 - 2:13last time I was conscious, so
-
2:13 - 2:14I dont know what possible
-
2:14 - 2:15thing they could do, do they,
-
2:15 - 2:17I couldnt possibly guess.
-
2:18 - 2:20Deborah- What? Where do
-
2:20 - 2:20you think they are?
-
2:21 - 2:22Clive- I have no idea. I dont
-
2:22 - 2:23know where I am.
-
2:24 - 2:25Deborah- All he has is void
-
2:26 - 2:27behind him.
-
2:27 - 2:28Clive- It has been like death.
-
2:29 - 2:30I have never seen a human
-
2:30 - 2:31being before that has ever
-
2:31 - 2:32had a dream or a thought, the
-
2:33 - 2:34brain has been totally inactive.
-
2:34 - 2:36Day and night the same, no
-
2:37 - 2:38thoughts at all. And as far as
-
2:38 - 2:39I am concerned the doctors
-
2:40 - 2:41have been totally incompetent.
-
2:41 - 2:43I have never seen a doctor
-
2:43 - 2:43the whole time.
-
2:44 - 2:45OH! Look who has come!
-
2:45 - 2:54Darling! OHHHHHHH. Youre
-
2:54 - 2:55home. How wonderful!
-
2:58 - 2:58Deborah- That was a very
-
2:58 - 3:01musical kiss. Im dizzy. I dont
-
3:01 - 3:02know which part of the room
-
3:02 - 3:02I am standing in anymore.
-
3:02 - 3:03Laughter
-
3:04 - 3:05Clive- Can we dance?
