Converting decimals to percents | Decimals | Pre-Algebra | Khan Academy

  • 0:01 - 0:04
    Percent literally means per 100.
  • 0:04 - 0:05
    That's where the
    word comes from.
  • 0:05 - 0:11
Cent from cents or century or
any of those words means 100.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    So if someone tells
    you 7 per cent--
  • 0:14 - 0:16
and I'm separating the word so
it makes a little more sense--
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    they're really saying 7 per 100.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    This is the same
    thing as 7 per 100,
  • 0:22 - 0:28
which is the same thing as a
    fraction as 7 per 7 per 100.
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    With that out of
    the way, let's see
  • 0:29 - 0:37
    if we can write 0.601
    as a percentage.
  • 0:37 - 0:41
    Well, we essentially want to
write it as something over 100.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    So you could view
    it as-- I'll just
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    rewrite this part
    right over here.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    You could write it
    as 0.601 over 1.
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    This is obviously
    the same quantity.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    If you divide
    anything by 1, you're
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    still going to get
    that same anything.
  • 0:53 - 1:00
    And I'm going to multiply
    it by 100 over 100.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    Obviously, this won't
    change the value.
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    This is just 1 here.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
But what this does is it'll
give us a fraction in term
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    with the denominator being 100.
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    So the denominator, if I
    multiply these two characters
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    right over here in
    the denominator,
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    the denominator of our
product is going to be 100.
  • 1:16 - 1:21
    If I multiply 0.0601 times
100, what am I going to get?
  • 1:21 - 1:25
    Well, every time I multiply
it by a multiple of 10
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    or every time I
    multiply it by 10,
  • 1:26 - 1:29
I'm going to shift the decimal
    over to the right once.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    So if I multiply it
    by 10, I'd get 6.01.
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    And if I multiply
    it by a 10 again
  • 1:34 - 1:38
or if I multiply it by
    100, I'm going to get 60.1.
  • 1:38 - 1:45
    So 0.601 times 100 is 60.1.
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    Let me rewrite that again.
  • 1:46 - 1:53
If I were to write 0.601, and
I want to multiply it by 100,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    shift the decimal once,
    I multiply it by 10.
  • 1:55 - 1:59
If I multiply it by 10 again, or
    essentially multiply it by 100,
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    I get 60.1.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    So this is times 10.
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    This is times 10 again.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    I've essentially
    multiplied it by 100.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    But now we have it
    in the form we like.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    We have 60.1 over 100.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    Or you could rewrite this.
  • 2:12 - 2:18
    This is the same
    thing as 60.1 per 100,
  • 2:18 - 2:25
    which is the same
    thing as 60.1 percent.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
And we'd obviously want to write
it then as 60.1 percent, as one
  • 2:28 - 2:34
    word, or 60.1, and we'll
    just use the symbol-- 60.1%.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    We are done.
