A vision for the future of Sierra Leone

  • Not Synced
    On Tuesday, January 16, 1996,
  • Not Synced
I walked in to the office of the president
  • Not Synced
    as Head of State
of the Republic of Sierra Leone.
  • Not Synced
    I had not been elected.
  • Not Synced
    Four years earlier,
  • Not Synced
    I was one of of 30 heavily-armed
    military officers,
  • Not Synced
    all in our 20s,
  • Not Synced
who had driven from the war front
  • Not Synced
    into the capital city, Freetown.
  • Not Synced
    We had only one objective:
  • Not Synced
    to overthrow a corrupt, repressive,
    and single-party dictatorship
  • Not Synced
that had kept itself in power
    for over 25 years.
  • Not Synced
But in the end, it wasn't a violent coup.
  • Not Synced
After we fired a few shots
    and seized the radio station,
  • Not Synced
    hundreds of thousands of citizens
    jumped onto the streets
  • Not Synced
    to welcome us as liberators.
  • Not Synced
If you are thinking this seems
like a movie script, I'm with you.
  • Not Synced
I was part of the ruling
    military government,
  • Not Synced
and I served in several roles.
  • Not Synced
Our goal was always to return the country
    to democratic civilian rule,
  • Not Synced
    but after four years,
  • Not Synced
    those multi-party democratic elections
    had still not happened.
  • Not Synced
    Citizens were beginning
to lose faith in our promise.
  • Not Synced
    But you know what?
  • Not Synced
I like to keep my promises.
  • Not Synced
Some of my comrades and I
    staged another military coup,
  • Not Synced
    but this time against
our own head of state and commander.
  • Not Synced
Again it was a bloodless coup.
  • Not Synced
That is how I became the new military
head of state on January 16, 1996.
  • Not Synced
I was still only 31 years old.
  • Not Synced
    Of course, power was sweet.
  • Not Synced
    I felt invulnerable.
  • Not Synced
I had thousands of heavily armed men
  • Not Synced
    and aircraft at my command.
  • Not Synced
    I was heavily protected,
  • Not Synced
    and I lived in luxury.
  • Not Synced
But my obligations to my nation
    were always superior.
  • Not Synced
    Millions of fellow citizens
    were either displaced
  • Not Synced
    or fleeing the violence
    and pillage of war,
  • Not Synced
so I engaged in a series
    of diplomatic activities
  • Not Synced
    right across the sub-region,
  • Not Synced
and convinced the reclusive rebel leader
  • Not Synced
    to initiate peace talks
    for the very first time.
  • Not Synced
    I also called a national
    consultative conference
  • Not Synced
    of civil society organizations
    and stakeholders
  • Not Synced
to advise on the best way forward.
  • Not Synced
In both cases, I shared with them
what I believed in then and now,
  • Not Synced
that Sierra Leone is bigger than all of us
  • Not Synced
and that Sierra Leone must be a secure,
    peaceful and just society
  • Not Synced
    where every person can thrive
  • Not Synced
    and contribute to national development.
  • Not Synced
And so I initiated peace talks
    with the rebels.
  • Not Synced
    I organized the first multi-party
democratic elections in nearly 30 years.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    I handed over power
  • Not Synced
    to the newly elected president,
  • Not Synced
    I retired from the army,
  • Not Synced
    and I left my country
for the United States of America
  • Not Synced
    to study,
  • Not Synced
    all in three months.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    In many a long walk,
  • Not Synced
I wondered how we could get it
    right again as a nation.
  • Not Synced
    More than 20 years later,
  • Not Synced
    in April 2018,
  • Not Synced
with a few more wrinkles and grey hair,
  • Not Synced
I was again head of state.
  • Not Synced
    But guess what?
  • Not Synced
    This time I have been
    democratically elected.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
At the polling stations last year,
  • Not Synced
    my three-year old daughter
    Amina was in my arms.
  • Not Synced
    She insisted on holding on
to my ballot paper with me.
  • Not Synced
    She was intent and focused.
  • Not Synced
    At that moment,
  • Not Synced
with my ballot papers in both our hands,
  • Not Synced
I fully understood the one priority for me
  • Not Synced
    if I was elected President
of the Republic of Sierra Leone:
  • Not Synced
that is, how could I make
    the lives of Amina
  • Not Synced
and millions of other young girls and boys
  • Not Synced
    better in our country?
