0:13 - 0:17If we begin with a construct
that we are a collection of stories. -
0:17 - 0:20We are the stories that we tell,
the stories that we believe, -
0:20 - 0:24and, equally, the stories
that we choose to ignore. -
0:24 - 0:26And so, I am going to revisit
-
0:26 - 0:30some of these old,
forgotten, lost stories, today. -
0:30 - 0:33Let's start at the beginning;
let's start with the story of creation. -
0:33 - 0:38You know creation is not a simple process,
and let no one ever tell you otherwise. -
0:38 - 0:43According to Hindu belief,
it is not even a one-man job. -
0:43 - 0:44You need three people for it.
-
0:44 - 0:49You need one to create,
one to preserve and one to destroy. -
0:49 - 0:50But Brahma -
-
0:50 - 0:52Brahma is the great father,
the creator - -
0:52 - 0:55when Brahma created
the world from his mind, -
0:55 - 0:57he decided in his arrogance
-
0:57 - 1:02that he was also going to be
the master of life and death. -
1:02 - 1:05And for this world
that he was going to create, -
1:05 - 1:10he was going to populate it with beings
that were both man and woman in one body; -
1:10 - 1:12beings that would self-fertilize.
-
1:12 - 1:13So the plan was,
-
1:13 - 1:17he was going to get these beings
to create a child from within themselves -
1:17 - 1:19without any outside help,
-
1:19 - 1:23feed and look after this child
for six years, -
1:23 - 1:25at which point the child
would become self-sufficient, -
1:25 - 1:28and the parent being
would automatically die off. -
1:28 - 1:31So, in Brahma's world,
there was going to be no mess, -
1:31 - 1:32no overcrowding.
-
1:32 - 1:35But when he actually created
these beings from his mind, -
1:35 - 1:38he discovered that they were all men.
-
1:38 - 1:42The creator hadn't quite worked out
how to manifest a woman. -
1:42 - 1:44Shiva came to the rescue,
-
1:44 - 1:46Shiva is one of the trinity,
he is the destroyer, -
1:46 - 1:48and Shiva is married to mother Earth.
-
1:48 - 1:53Shiva came in and he reached
into Brahma's mind, -
1:53 - 1:58and he pulled out a woman:
Brahma's mind-born daughter. -
1:58 - 2:01And then he explained to Brahma
about men and about women -
2:01 - 2:04and about the ecstasy of coming together.
-
2:04 - 2:07Unfortunately, Brahma was not listening
-
2:07 - 2:10because he had taken one look
at his beautiful mind-born daughter, -
2:10 - 2:12and decided he wanted her.
-
2:12 - 2:14And Shiva had had to sit there
-
2:14 - 2:17and watch the great father
lusting after his own daughter, -
2:17 - 2:21chasing his daughter all over the cosmos
because he wanted to possess her. -
2:21 - 2:24He realized what kind of sin
he had brought into the world. -
2:24 - 2:29And so, to try to mitigate this sin,
Shiva castrated himself. -
2:29 - 2:33He merged with his own wife,
and he went back to Brahma, -
2:33 - 2:35and he said, "Look, plan A.
-
2:35 - 2:38This is how you create a being
that's both man and woman in one body. -
2:38 - 2:40Let's go back to this plan."
-
2:40 - 2:44But by now, Brahma had known
the ecstasy of coming together. -
2:44 - 2:49And so, he prised apart Shiva
from his wife, and he said, -
2:49 - 2:52"From now on, men and women
will be born as separate entities, -
2:52 - 2:56they will live as separate entities,
and they will know the joy of union." -
2:56 - 3:01And then Brahma created
a race of men and a race of women, -
3:01 - 3:05he paired them up together and said,
"Go and populate my world." -
3:05 - 3:09Unfortunately, nothing happened
because no one knew what to do. -
3:09 - 3:11And so, Shiva once again,
came to the rescue. -
3:11 - 3:13He said to the men and women, he said,
-
3:13 - 3:19"Go and tickle each other,
and the rest will follow." -
3:19 - 3:20(Laughter)
-
3:20 - 3:25They did and 7 billion people later,
the rest is history. -
3:25 - 3:28At this point, Shiva and his wife -
Parvati, mother Earth - -
3:28 - 3:31went on to write a manual each -
the first of its kind - -
3:31 - 3:35a manual each, on the arts of seduction.
-
3:35 - 3:37Now, I should interrupt
myself here and just say -
3:37 - 3:39I don't like the word "seduction."
-
3:39 - 3:42It's kind of taken on
all manner of implications -
3:42 - 3:43that don't really belong to it,
-
3:43 - 3:46but I haven't been able
to find the mot juste, -
3:46 - 3:48you know, at least in English.
-
3:48 - 3:49So, I am going to use the word,
-
3:49 - 3:53but I am going to try
and explain the concept to you. -
3:53 - 3:57According to Tantra,
according to high philosophy, -
3:57 - 4:01sexual energy is the highest form
of energy in the world, -
4:01 - 4:06and to be able to harness it
is to generate the ultimate power. -
4:06 - 4:12And so the arts of seduction
was about building up, optimizing -
4:12 - 4:16and harnessing the power
of the mind, the body and the spirit, -
4:16 - 4:19in order to generate the ultimate power.
-
4:19 - 4:20Ok, so this is a very large subject,
-
4:20 - 4:23and I am going to give you
about a half a drop worth, -
4:23 - 4:26but in the Kamasutra it says
-
4:26 - 4:30that men and women need to learn 64 skills
-
4:30 - 4:33to become adept at the arts of seduction.
-
4:33 - 4:35Some things make sense, ok, you know:
-
4:35 - 4:40singing, dancing,
perfuming of the body, gymnastics; -
4:40 - 4:42some things really don't.
-
4:42 - 4:47I mean, what does a skill in mineralogy
have to do with the arts of seduction? -
4:47 - 4:50Or a skill in quail fighting?
-
4:50 - 4:51(Laughter)
-
4:51 - 4:54Cock fighting? Ram fighting?
-
4:54 - 4:55I love this one the best:
-
4:55 - 4:59what does a skill in making
handicrafts out of thread -
4:59 - 5:01have to do with the arts of seduction?
-
5:01 - 5:04It's listed in the 64 arts.
-
5:04 - 5:08Ok, 64 was not the number of ways
that you could seduce somebody. -
5:08 - 5:1164 was the totality of your life.
-
5:11 - 5:14If you take your life
and you divide it into four stages, -
5:14 - 5:18each stage then gets divided
into four branches of knowledge -
5:18 - 5:20that you must acquire during each stage.
-
5:20 - 5:22That gives you 16 branches of knowledge.
-
5:22 - 5:24And then you divide
each branch of knowledge -
5:24 - 5:27further into four,
to cover all its aspects, -
5:27 - 5:29and you get the number 64.
-
5:29 - 5:32So, a complete knowledge
of the arts of seduction -
5:32 - 5:37was equated with complete mastery
of your entire life. -
5:37 - 5:39Yeah, about optimizing and harnessing
-
5:39 - 5:41the power of the mind,
the body and the spirit. -
5:41 - 5:45And, I'll let you in to a quick secret:
according to ancient wisdom, -
5:45 - 5:48this complete knowledge
of the arts of seduction -
5:48 - 5:50and the ability to practice it,
-
5:50 - 5:52this was known as the elixir of youth.
-
5:52 - 5:56You know, when Cleopatra
decided to seduce Julius Caesar, -
5:56 - 5:59she didn't just want him for one night,
she wanted him for keeps, -
5:59 - 6:02and she wanted him to the exclusion
of every other woman. -
6:02 - 6:08This is Caesar, the emperor
of the largest known empire of the time. -
6:09 - 6:11He's rich, he's spoiled,
-
6:11 - 6:13he can have anybody he wants,
he can do anything he wants, -
6:13 - 6:16and she wants him all to herself forever.
-
6:16 - 6:20Do you know what was the tool
of seduction that she chose to use? -
6:20 - 6:22Aside from the obvious.
-
6:22 - 6:25She decided that he was going to -
-
6:25 - 6:29well, she was going to be completely happy
-
6:29 - 6:32for every single minute
that he spent with her. -
6:32 - 6:38So he would associate her with just
his happiest moments in his life. -
6:38 - 6:41She decided that he was
going to laugh with her more -
6:41 - 6:45than he had ever laughed
with any other woman. -
6:45 - 6:48And we know from history that it worked.
-
6:48 - 6:54This brings me to the other story,
which I find is going out, literally, -
6:54 - 6:57and that is that, you know,
-
6:59 - 7:05the skills of the arts of seduction
were not just meant as a skill for women. -
7:05 - 7:08It was equally important for the men.
-
7:09 - 7:12And that is a story
that's becoming completely obsolete. -
7:12 - 7:14Because, every time I do this talk,
-
7:14 - 7:16and I say, "Well, for a woman
to be truly seductive, -
7:16 - 7:20she had to be intelligent, amusing,
beautiful, fragrant, sexy, subtle, -
7:20 - 7:23discreet, porcelain-skinned,
good at singing, good at dancing, -
7:23 - 7:27good at playing musical instruments,
well-spoken, well-behaved, well-read, -
7:27 - 7:30nails painted, toes polished,
lips reddened, legs waxed... -
7:30 - 7:33And what did a man have to be?
-
7:34 - 7:38And every time, the answer is: rich.
He just has to be rich. -
7:38 - 7:40If he's rich, he doesn't
have to do anything else. -
7:40 - 7:41Not so.
-
7:41 - 7:43And then you hear those hideous websites,
-
7:43 - 7:45which tell a woman: be completely perfect.
-
7:45 - 7:48And if the man is doing
something you don't like: -
7:48 - 7:50don't complain, smile and pretend.
-
7:50 - 7:52Or if he is boring you to tears:
-
7:52 - 7:54don't complain, smile and pretend.
-
7:54 - 7:55No, no, no.
-
7:55 - 7:59If we say that the arts of seduction
-
7:59 - 8:01were about building up,
optimizing and harnessing -
8:01 - 8:04the energy of the mind,
the body and the soul -
8:04 - 8:06to generate the ultimate power,
-
8:06 - 8:10it was equally important
for a man to participate fully. -
8:10 - 8:13Not just that the man
supposed to participate fully -
8:13 - 8:16and know all about
the skills of seduction; -
8:16 - 8:20he also had to be able
to understand the nuances, -
8:22 - 8:26the expertise, the finesse
with which he was being seduced, -
8:26 - 8:29in order to maximize his sexual energies.
-
8:29 - 8:30Yes?
-
8:32 - 8:34You know, there were lots of books written
-
8:34 - 8:36about the role of the men.
-
8:36 - 8:39There's a prelude to one of these books -
-
8:39 - 8:42I absolutely love the story
and I am going to share it with you. -
8:42 - 8:46So, there was a king sitting in his court,
surrounded by all his ministers, -
8:46 - 8:49and this woman rushes into the court,
and she is stark naked, -
8:49 - 8:51and there's complete mayhem in the court.
-
8:51 - 8:54A woman. Naked.
In broad daylight. -
8:54 - 8:56In the presence of the King. Ahhhh!
-
8:56 - 8:58So, people rush forward
to try and clothe her, -
8:58 - 9:00and she stops them and she says:
-
9:00 - 9:04"No. I have decided
that I will no longer, ever, -
9:04 - 9:09wear a stitch of clothing
till my wish is fulfilled." -
9:09 - 9:10So, the king -
-
9:10 - 9:13you know, it's a matter of pride,
he can make things happen - -
9:13 - 9:15he says, "Go ahead,
tell me what is it that you want." -
9:15 - 9:19And she says, "Well,
I am completely fed up -
9:19 - 9:22because in all my life,
there's never been a man -
9:22 - 9:26who has taken the trouble
to try and satisfy me in bed. -
9:26 - 9:28Not one. Not ever.
-
9:28 - 9:30And I have decided
-
9:30 - 9:34that till I'm satisfied completely,
I will not get dressed." -
9:34 - 9:36(Laughter)
-
9:36 - 9:42Now, the King, he's given his word,
he looks at his ministers expectantly, -
9:42 - 9:45the minsters look at the king expectantly,
-
9:45 - 9:47they have a little hurried discussion,
-
9:47 - 9:49and they discover to their complete dismay
-
9:49 - 9:54that there is not one man in that room
who could say with any conviction -
9:54 - 9:58that he's going to be able
to satisfy a woman completely. -
9:58 - 10:03Now, ladies and gentlemen,
imagine the level of panic. -
10:03 - 10:06What if this form of rebellion took?
-
10:06 - 10:11What if all their wives
took to the streets naked, -
10:11 - 10:14demanding sexual satisfaction?
-
10:15 - 10:18Don't worry, the story has a happy ending.
-
10:18 - 10:19The King put out a reward.
-
10:19 - 10:22A man came forward out of nowhere,
he took this woman by the hand, -
10:22 - 10:24he took her away,
-
10:24 - 10:27and the next morning
she came back to the king's court, -
10:27 - 10:29completely dressed from head to foot.
-
10:29 - 10:31A picture of demureness.
-
10:31 - 10:34And she confirmed that she
had been completely satisfied. -
10:34 - 10:37The king immediately commissioned
this man to write a book, -
10:37 - 10:39putting down all his knowledge,
-
10:39 - 10:43so that it would be available
to every single person in his kingdom, -
10:43 - 10:48and never would a woman
have to walk the streets naked again. -
10:48 - 10:51(Laughter)
-
10:51 - 10:53I absolutely love this story,
but I have to say, -
10:53 - 10:57I am in awe of the kind of width
of experience, the detail, -
10:57 - 11:01the research that went into these books.
-
11:01 - 11:04Specifically, on the role of men.
-
11:04 - 11:06Do you know, there's even an old book
-
11:06 - 11:10that talks about the shifting
of a woman's erogenous zones -
11:10 - 11:13according to the movement of the moon?
-
11:13 - 11:14The idea being
-
11:14 - 11:16that a woman's sexuality is liquid,
-
11:16 - 11:18so it is affected
by the phases of the moon. -
11:18 - 11:20And again, it is a huge subject,
-
11:20 - 11:22so I'm just going to give you
a couple of examples, -
11:22 - 11:24you know, broad strokes.
-
11:24 - 11:26So, they said
-
11:26 - 11:30that on the 14th day of the waxing
and the waning moon, for instance, -
11:30 - 11:34the most sensitive part of a woman
is her head and her hair, -
11:34 - 11:38and the best way
to get her sexual energy up -
11:38 - 11:41is to massage the scalp gently,
-
11:41 - 11:45and the 13th day, it's the eyes,
so the eye-lids should be kissed - -
11:45 - 11:48apparently the right eye
is more sensitive during the waxing moon, -
11:48 - 11:50and the left eyelid
during the waning moon. -
11:51 - 11:52On the 7th day -
-
11:52 - 11:56I am not going to give you all the details
because I don't have that much time - -
11:56 - 12:01but on the 7th day, it is the navel
that is the most sensitive, -
12:01 - 12:04and ideally it should be tapped
with an open palm. -
12:06 - 12:11On the 4th day, it is the knees,
his knees should press against her knees. -
12:11 - 12:13The 5th day is the lazy man's day,
-
12:13 - 12:16a man doesn't have to do very much
on the 5th day. -
12:16 - 12:19The woman is pretty much
self-sufficient on the fifth day - -
12:19 - 12:21(Laughter)
-
12:21 - 12:23of both the waning and the waxing moon.
-
12:24 - 12:26And just for your
little bit of information, -
12:26 - 12:32today is the 7th, no, today is
the 6th day of the phase of the moon, -
12:32 - 12:36and apparently today
is the bottom, the buttocks, -
12:36 - 12:38which should be gently tapped
-
12:38 - 12:39(Laughter)
-
12:39 - 12:42gently tapped with a fist.
-
12:43 - 12:48And then of course, it goes further
into the permutations and combinations. -
12:48 - 12:51It is an incredible piece of work,
but as I said, -
12:51 - 12:55there is so much information,
and it gets lost -
12:55 - 13:00because of the word seduction
having been a victim of evolution. -
13:00 - 13:04So, I don't have very much more time,
so I am going to actually finish -
13:04 - 13:08with a little tiny example
of my favorite part, -
13:08 - 13:10one of my favorite parts
of the arts of seduction, -
13:10 - 13:13and that is about
the perfuming of the body. -
13:13 - 13:15Now, the perfuming of the body
-
13:15 - 13:18was supposed to be
a subtly shifting phenomena, -
13:18 - 13:20so you add a certain dye
to get a base scent, -
13:20 - 13:23and you apply different perfumes
to the rest of your - -
13:23 - 13:24every part of the body.
-
13:24 - 13:27The hair, had to be perfumed with khuss.
-
13:27 - 13:30Khuss - for those of you
who are not of a South Asian background - -
13:30 - 13:36is the smell of fresh rain
as it falls in scorching hot soil. -
13:36 - 13:39It is the ultimate
aphrodisiac in the world. -
13:39 - 13:44So, hair with khuss,
neck with jasmine, arms with mint. -
13:44 - 13:47There is a reason
for every part of the body, ok. -
13:47 - 13:51The belly button, with a very heavy musk,
to draw somebody in. -
13:51 - 13:55The curve of the waist,
with a very subtle extract of roses, -
13:55 - 13:58so you have to press your face into it.
-
13:58 - 13:59And the back - this is my favorite -
-
13:59 - 14:02the back had to be dotted,
not dropped over, -
14:02 - 14:05dotted with little dabs of sandalwood,
-
14:05 - 14:09so you've created a trail,
for someone to follow. -
14:09 - 14:10Because at the end of it,
-
14:10 - 14:15you have to be like a banquette
of tastes, of textures, of smells. -
14:15 - 14:17Ladies and gentlemen, in closing,
-
14:17 - 14:21can I just suggest that this is a story
that you should try at home. -
14:21 - 14:23(Laughter)
-
14:23 - 14:25(Applause)

- The art of seduction | Seema Anand | TEDxEaling
- Description:
-
The ancient arts of Courtesanery and Seduction were once treated as high philosophy, with divine and academic associations. Dr. Seema Anand explores how these narratives have been lost and in the evolution of their vocabulary, the implications have changed. Working with the range of what 'story' can mean to an individual, Seema facilitates the learning processes of 'telling', 'listening', 'acknowledging' and 'rejecting' the narratives that make up our lives and our social interactions to enhance communication, build links and open dialogue.

It is a very small detail, but I think the name of the perfume is khus, and not khuss: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ittar
