Crowdsource your health | Lucien Engelen | TEDxMaastricht

  • 0:25 - 0:27
You can do this with techniques like this,
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    but also by crowdsourcing.
  • 0:29 - 0:30
And one of the things we did,
  • 0:30 - 0:34
that I would like to share with you
    introduced by a little video.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    (Music)
  • 1:40 - 1:45
    (Heart-beat)
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    We've all got
    navigation controls in our car.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
We maybe even have it in our cellphone.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
We perfectly know where all the ATMs are,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
just about the city of Maastricht.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
The other thing is we know
where all the gas stations are.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
And sure, we could find fast food chains.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
But where would be the nearest AED
    to help this patient?
  • 2:07 - 2:09
We asked around, and nobody knew.
  • 2:09 - 2:13
    Nobody knew where
    the nearest lifesaving AED
  • 2:13 - 2:15
was to be obtained right now.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    So what we did,
    we crowdsourced the Netherlands.
  • 2:18 - 2:21
We set up a website, and asked the crowd,
  • 2:21 - 2:23
"If you see an AED, please submit it,
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    tell us where it is,
    tell us when it's open,"
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    since sometimes in office hours
    it's closed, of course.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
And over 10,000 AEDs in the Netherlands
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    already have been submitted.
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    The next step we took
was to find the applications for it.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
And we built an iPad application.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    We made an application
    for Layar: Augmented Reality,
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    to find these AEDs.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    And whenever you are
    in a city like Maastricht,
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    and somebody collapses,
    you can use your iPhone,
  • 2:50 - 2:54
    and within the next weeks
    also your Microsoft cellphone,
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    to find the nearest AED,
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    which can save lives.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    And as of today,
  • 2:59 - 3:01
we would like to introduce this,
    not only as AED4EU,
  • 3:01 - 3:03
which is what the product is called,
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    but also AED4US.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
And we would like to start this
    on a worldwide level.
  • 3:07 - 3:12
And ask all of our colleagues
in the rest of the world,
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    colleague universities, to help us
  • 3:14 - 3:16
to find and work and act like a hub
  • 3:16 - 3:20
    to crowdsource all these AEDs
    all around the world,
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    that whenever you're on holiday
    and somebody collapses,
  • 3:23 - 3:26
might it be your own relative
or someone just in front of you,
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    you can find this.
  • 3:28 - 3:30
The other thing we would like to ask
  • 3:30 - 3:32
is of companies also all over the world
  • 3:32 - 3:35
that will be able to help us
    validate these AEDs.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    These might be courier services
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    or cable guys, for instance,
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    just to see whether
    the AED that is submitted
  • 3:41 - 3:42
    is still in place.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    So please help us.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    (Applause)
