    In Moscow and throughout Russia,
    live many Ukrainians

In the Carpathians live the Hutsul
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    They cut trees,
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    make rafts from the logs
  • 0:52 - 0:57
and then boldly lead these rafts
    downstream over swift currents.

    a unique musical instrument:
  • 1:12 - 1:13

  • 1:20 - 1:24
Its sound can be heard from over 10 km away.
  • 1:24 - 1:30
    Of course, here also children
    are told cheerful folktales
  • 1:30 - 1:35
Each one of them - a precious gem.
  • 1:35 - 1:45
    A MOUNTAIN OF GEMS
  • 1:45 - 2:05
    Hey! Come on!
What's this? Where are you doing...?
  • 2:05 - 2:11
    Zlydni*
    *(Evil Elves)
  • 2:11 - 2:16
Once upon a time in the Carpathians.
There lived a couple: Petro & Maritchka.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
They had two small children ...
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    a horse ...
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    cows ...
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    a pig.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    These are the envious neighbors...
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    chickens ...
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    geese ...
  • 2:32 - 2:39
    a garden with pumpkins and
a furry dog that'd guard the house.
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    Petro was a practical man.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
He could fix anything at home.
  • 2:44 - 2:45
And he could play the flute.
  • 2:45 - 2:49
    Maritchka helped him.
She would do the washing ...
  • 2:49 - 2:53
    and cooking.
    - Vareniki! (Dumplings)
  • 2:53 - 2:57
    But one day ...
  • 2:57 - 3:13
What a horror! What is that?
  • 3:13 - 3:18
    Damn!
  • 3:18 - 3:31
    What is that?
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    Oh!
  • 3:33 - 3:41
Lord, thank you for the food
    you've given us to eat...
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    Oh my God ...
    What is this again?
  • 3:43 - 4:15
    Then all their belongings began
    to go wild.
  • 4:15 - 4:31
    My God, what is this?
  • 4:31 - 4:35
    Oh, who are you?
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    Well? Who?
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    We are Zlydni.
    We break and ruin everything.
  • 4:40 - 4:43
We came to live here with you.
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    Zlydni??
  • 4:44 - 4:50
    I see ...
  • 4:50 - 4:58
    Hey, hell!
  • 4:58 - 5:02
    Look, Daddy!
  • 5:02 - 5:06
    And then Petro realized
    that those damned Zlydni
  • 5:06 - 5:21
could only get caught with music.
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    Again those neighbors!
  • 5:24 - 5:28
    Petro led the Zlydni away,
    into a deep hole
  • 5:28 - 5:34
    where they could not
    get out from.
  • 5:34 - 6:20
That's it. Tomorrow we'll repair everything.
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    Maritchka, why don't you
    go gather some mushrooms?
  • 6:22 - 6:47
So we can eat dumplings with mushroom.
    - Mmm, alright!
  • 6:47 - 6:50
    Good morning.
  • 6:50 - 6:59
    What a mushroom!
  • 6:59 - 7:16
    Hello again!
  • 7:16 - 7:36
And again Petro was left with a destroyed home.
  • 7:36 - 7:39
So this time Petro led the Zlydni
  • 7:39 - 7:41
    to a deep lake
  • 7:41 - 7:44
from which they could not leave.
  • 7:44 - 8:09
    That's all. No more Zlydni.
  • 8:09 - 8:12
    Why not go fishing, guys?
  • 8:12 - 8:28
so we can eat fish-pie ...
  • 8:28 - 8:33
    - Hello.
    - Hello.
  • 8:33 - 8:36
    My God!
    What trout!
  • 8:36 - 8:37
    What a horror!
  • 8:37 - 9:00
    Hello again!
  • 9:00 - 9:27
This time, the house of Petro
    was completely ruined.
  • 9:27 - 9:33
    To hell with this!
  • 9:33 - 9:36
Petro decided to trade the flute ...
  • 9:36 - 9:41
    For "gorilka" (Vodka).
  • 9:41 - 9:45
    My hut is ruined,
    my cows mooing.
  • 9:45 - 9:52
    And this disaster-party already
    continues for three days ...
  • 9:52 - 9:54
    What is that?
    What is that?
  • 9:54 - 9:56
    Gorilka.
  • 9:56 - 9:58
    What is that?
    What is gorilka?
  • 9:58 - 10:09
    Gorilka?? That's what one takes
    on bitter days...
  • 10:09 - 10:12
    So the Zlydni decided
to take some gorilka too ...
  • 10:12 - 10:16
    and got drunk.
  • 10:16 - 10:23
    They wanted more.
  • 10:23 - 10:35
    But then Maritchka
closed the flask with a cork.
  • 10:35 - 10:42
    this time Petro went far
far away, to a swamp ...
  • 10:42 - 10:58
... and left the Zlydni there.
  • 10:58 - 11:05
    The Zlydni were unable
to escape from the bottle ...
  • 11:05 - 11:09
    Petro rebuild the house ...
  • 11:09 - 11:12
    and it even improved.
  • 11:12 - 11:24
The neighbors got green with envy
and could not get quiet about it anymore.
  • 11:24 - 11:33
    So when the neighbors heard
how Petro got rid of the Zlydni...
  • 11:33 - 11:36
"Go to the swamp and bring back...
  • 11:36 - 11:38
    ...the Zlydni."
  • 11:38 - 12:16
The neighbors decided to return them to
the home of Petro Zlydni and Maritchka.
  • 12:16 - 12:28
    Go back to Petro's house!
  • 12:28 - 12:32
    No, you have saved us.
    Now you are our masters.
  • 12:32 - 12:47
We will come and live in your home.
  • 12:47 - 12:53
    Ever since then, the Zlydni
    always install themselves ...
  • 12:53 - 12:55
in the homes of those who
    envy their neighbors.
