Thanksgiving Slaughter

  • 0:07 - 0:09
Oh! Well that didn't work well.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
Hi guys! I don't know if you guys are still there.
  • 0:15 - 0:20
My phone totally died, I've been here for a while, pretty early...
  • 0:21 - 0:28
and I also under-estimated how cold it is, so my hands are a bit not functional at the moment.
  • 0:28 - 0:33
I had to come back to the... I got, cause this is the kinda person I am...
  • 0:33 - 0:40
I got this rental car. I don't have a car so I got a rental car explicitly to come and do this.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    Totally worth it.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
So right in front of me, I'm going to flip you guys around...
  • 0:46 - 0:48
Hold on... I just found out I can do that.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
So, that is the shed that we were in.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    You can see it there.
  • 0:54 - 1:04
So there's this, it's a shed, and there's rows of fans that go between the trucks.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
They park the trucks between the fans.
  • 1:06 - 1:17
And during the hot months, they're blowing and the turkeys sit on these trucks for hours and hours.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
And they're just crammed in there, I mean if you...
  • 1:21 - 1:25
It's kind of a perverse holiday, honestly.
  • 1:27 - 1:32
    These are living beings.
  • 1:32 - 1:36
I don't know how long they're going to sit on the trucks today.
  • 1:38 - 1:42
They're still there. They were there when I got here.
  • 1:42 - 1:51
I got here a little later than I wanted because I saw a truck pull over at a gas station with pigs.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
So I also was with pigs this morning.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    And they were so...
  • 2:02 - 2:05
They were so trusting, these pigs.
  • 2:06 - 2:11
It was coming right up to me and...
  • 2:11 - 2:16
Some of them looked just so terrified.
  • 2:16 - 2:21
It's so hard leaving them too because for them and for these turkeys,
  • 2:21 - 2:27
this is...this is their death day. This is the last day of their lives.
  • 2:27 - 2:33
They, you know, bring them and unload them in the night and in the early morning.
  • 2:35 - 2:40
There's actually a job posting right now online for this facility, of...
  • 2:40 - 2:44
The position is literally called "Live Hang."
  • 2:44 - 2:50
So your job is to pull the turkeys out of the truck and hang them.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
Here's another great thing... oh that's my face, hold on.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
There's... Well I guess you can't see the school bus.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
There's a school bus right here.
  • 3:02 - 3:08
Earlier this morning when I first got here,
  • 3:08 - 3:14
there was a school bus that pulled in to the turkey shed for a little bit.
  • 3:15 - 3:20
So let's see if we can go through.
  • 3:22 - 3:25
See if I don't lose you.
  • 3:31 - 3:36
This is where we were earlier...
  • 3:41 - 3:46
    in between these trucks.
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    There's where families live.
  • 3:54 - 3:58
Kids play right here, and then here's another one.
  • 4:00 - 4:08
Inside, earlier this morning there were, it was full of trucks that were full.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    But now uhm...
  • 4:12 - 4:18
    Now they've been emptied.
  • 4:24 - 4:28
Okay so let me flip you guys back around.
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    So... (sigh)
  • 4:32 - 4:39
You can kind of see, I mean this is, it's a huge, huge building and facility.
  • 4:39 - 4:46
    And basically...
  • 4:46 - 4:52
There's kind of like a, it's like a really celebrated story actually, this place.
  • 4:52 - 5:00
And, you know it was, it was like a slaughter facility, a slaughter house, and it was going to close.
  • 5:00 - 5:08
And then the local turkey farmers here kind of banded together and raised funds and everything.
  • 5:09 - 5:12
And then they, they bought the facility.
  • 5:13 - 5:17
So now, what it is today, it's primarily a processing plant.
  • 5:17 - 5:26
So they bring in, you know, like... carcasses of other species too. You know, cows and pigs.
  • 5:26 - 5:32
They process the meat all the way through to package ready, like Balogna and these kind of things.
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    But, they still slaughter turkeys.
  • 5:35 - 5:40
So the turkeys are, are the only animals that they, they slaughter here.
  • 5:40 - 5:46
But most of it is, is like a plant for processing the other animals.
  • 5:47 - 5:54
So it's kind of seen as this like, David and Goliath story of like...
  • 5:56 - 6:02
you know, like a victory for the farmers.
  • 6:03 - 6:07
But no one thinks of the turkeys though.
  • 6:30 - 6:35
I also have to be careful because eventually they're gonna wonder
  • 6:35 - 6:40
why I'm doing so many drive-bys with an iPhone.
  • 6:43 - 6:48
So again here's the, some of the trucks are in here full.
  • 6:48 - 6:51
    All of these were full.
  • 7:04 - 7:10
OK, so that's kind of, that's kind of the runaround there.
  • 7:26 - 7:28
I mean, and you know there's like a (sigh)
  • 7:28 - 7:30
like I said there's a playground right there...
  • 7:30 - 7:36
There's, you know, kids playing in their houses right next to...
  • 7:36 - 7:40
    This shed of turkeys.
  • 7:42 - 7:47
    It's heartbreaking.
  • 7:47 - 7:51
    I don't think...
  • 7:51 - 7:53
I don't know if I have enough battery guys 'cause like,
  • 7:53 - 7:58
I mean, I'm on... I'm like charging my phone literally plugged into this car,
  • 7:59 - 8:03
because I ran out of battery while filming the turkeys.
  • 8:05 - 8:10
So I don't know if I'm gonna be able to get enough charge to bring you guys back...
  • 8:11 - 8:15
To bring you back for the turkeys. I'm hoping...
  • 8:17 - 8:20
Alright, I'm trying to see if I can...
  • 8:20 - 8:22
I can't see my battery right now!
  • 8:22 - 8:29
And, trying to check my batteries to see if I can take you guys back in there real quick.
  • 8:30 - 8:34
    Before they take them.
  • 8:34 - 8:38
    Alright...
  • 8:38 - 8:41
    Alright guys, I'm going to...
  • 8:41 - 8:46
I'm gonna stop this stream really quick, and check my battery.
  • 8:46 - 8:54
And see if I have enough to be able to bring you guys back to the turkeys. OK?
  • 8:58 - 9:04
I think we can make it work for just a little bit longer.
  • 9:06 - 9:12
Although they might be coming out soon, the workers. So we'll see.
  • 9:12 - 9:20
But, actually let's see if I can, let's see if I can keep you guys on here, and get out there.
  • 9:20 - 9:22
    Hold on.
  • 9:28 - 9:32
I do have a video for you guys today by the way.
  • 9:33 - 9:36
I got the, it's another Gregor, it's a new Gregor video.
  • 9:36 - 9:39
And I, you know, I worked on it all night.
  • 9:39 - 9:44
I slept about 20 minutes so that I could get that video done and come here.
  • 9:44 - 9:52
So I'll still post that today but I just felt that this was really important
  • 9:52 - 9:56
to share with you guys as soon as I could.
  • 9:56 - 10:00
Alright, let's see if we can get back over there. (door opens and shuts)
  • 10:14 - 10:15
    Alright.
  • 10:21 - 10:23
    (tumbling noises)
  • 10:23 - 10:26
Oh! I dropped you! It's ok.
  • 10:41 - 12:11
    (turkeys rustling and clucking)
  • 12:12 - 12:17
This is nothing to be thankful for.
  • 12:17 - 13:45
    (turkeys rustling and clucking)
  • 13:45 - 14:19
(a turkey frantically clucks and struggles in another cage)
  • 14:19 - 15:11
    (turkeys rustling and clucking)
  • 15:11 - 15:15
    You know they have personalities,
  • 15:15 - 15:18
and they certainly want to live.
  • 15:22 - 15:28
Even if we, even if we say that they're not intelligent, which I don't believe,
  • 15:28 - 15:35
intelligence doesn't have anything to do with wanting to live and with feeling pain.
  • 15:38 - 15:42
It's just one of the justifications we try to use.
  • 15:44 - 15:49
I mean look at them and tell me that they don't know any better.
  • 15:49 - 26:05
    (turkeys rustling and clucking)
  • 26:05 - 26:17
A truck load of turkeys this morning.
