Intersection: A Dream Come True
-
0:01 - 0:12[Music] Intersection.
Where technology and disability meet. -
0:19 - 0:22Because of his cerebral palsy
-
0:22 - 0:25Christopher has to rely on this expensive
-
0:25 - 0:28clunky environmental control device if
-
0:28 - 0:31he wants to be more independent.
-
0:31 - 0:36For him an iPad was a dream.
-
0:42 - 0:44Thanks to Tecla Shield and a VoiceOver
-
0:44 - 0:48hack, Christopher can now access iOS 6,
-
0:48 - 0:51except for gestures which are a big part
-
0:51 - 0:54of iOS.
-
1:02 - 1:05Apple added Switch Control to iOS 7,
-
1:09 - 1:11and Mac.
-
1:19 - 1:24So, today I'm going to get Alex
-
1:24 - 1:29to tell you about how I use
-
1:30 - 1:36Switch Control in iOS 7.
-
1:36 - 1:40Take it away Alex!
-
1:40 - 1:42[Alex gives a raspberry sound]
-
1:42 - 1:46[Alex laughs] Alex!
-
1:46 - 1:50Yes. Okay. Okay. I'm not going to spend
-
1:50 - 1:53too much time showing you how to set up
-
1:53 - 1:55Switch Control and what all the settings
-
1:55 - 1:58do. There are great videos out there like
-
1:58 - 2:00this one from Luis Perez that explain
-
2:00 - 2:03this in great detail. The link is in the
-
2:03 - 2:05description below. I want to talk about
-
2:05 - 2:08how I use Switch Control to do almost
-
2:08 - 2:10any gesture you can imagine without
-
2:10 - 2:13actually doing it. You can use more than
-
2:13 - 2:15one switch, however, I find that it is
-
2:15 - 2:19simpler to just use one. Providing the
-
2:19 - 2:21setting is turned on, you can double tap
-
2:21 - 2:23with the switch to bring up a menu. This
-
2:23 - 2:26is what makes the Switch Control feature
-
2:26 - 2:29so great. From here, you can access the
-
2:29 - 2:32home button, the gestures menu, the device
-
2:32 - 2:35menu, where you can access things like
-
2:35 - 2:38multitasking, notification center, control
-
2:38 - 2:42center, etc. You can also get to the
-
2:42 - 2:44settings menu, which allows the switch
-
2:44 - 2:47user to customize settings. The settings
-
2:47 - 2:49menu also has a button for turning on
-
2:49 - 2:52Point Mode. Point Mode is a very handy
-
2:52 - 2:55feature. It allows the switch user to
-
2:55 - 2:57access apps that are not set up for
-
2:57 - 3:00VoiceOver. Switch Control is built on
-
3:00 - 3:02the VoiceOver platform, which is how it
-
3:02 - 3:05knows how to scan buttons. So, if an app
-
3:05 - 3:08is not configured for VoiceOver, Point
-
3:08 - 3:10Mode makes it accessible. Switch Control
-
3:10 - 3:13is very clever. It knows when you open
-
3:13 - 3:16an app with no buttons it can recognize.
-
3:16 - 3:19To automatically switch to Point Mode.
-
3:19 - 3:22Here you can see me playing The Room, a
-
3:22 - 3:24game that would have been impossible
-
3:24 - 3:26for me to access on iOS 6 because it has
-
3:26 - 3:30no buttons to scan. Point Mode makes this
-
3:30 - 3:32possible. The room also takes advantage
-
3:32 - 3:35of all the cool gestures that Switch
-
3:35 - 3:38Control comes with. First, there are
-
3:38 - 3:40basic pans to move around the scenes.
-
3:40 - 3:43Then, there are double taps for focusing
-
3:43 - 3:45on an object.
-
3:47 - 3:49Then, there are hold and drags to drag
-
3:49 - 3:51an object, such as a key.
-
3:59 - 4:02Finally, there is an awesome gesture
-
4:02 - 4:05that allows me to turn that key.
-
4:13 - 4:16When the camera app opens Point Mode is
-
4:16 - 4:18not automatically switched on because
-
4:18 - 4:20there are buttons that Switch Control
-
4:20 - 4:23recognizes. So, this is when the user
-
4:23 - 4:28has to engage Point Mode manually.
-
4:28 - 4:30Point Mode is used in the camera app for
-
4:30 - 4:33focusing on an object.
-
4:43 - 4:46This is a personal preference, but I also
-
4:46 - 4:49like to use Point Mode in Safari. I find
-
4:49 - 4:52that when Switch Control was trying to
-
4:52 - 4:54scan a web page, it is a bit confusing
-
4:54 - 4:57to know what it is going to scan next,
-
4:57 - 4:59because there are so many buttons on a
-
4:59 - 5:02web page. Point Mode makes it quicker for
-
5:02 - 5:02me.
-
5:10 - 5:12Switch Control can support many different
-
5:12 - 5:15Bluetooth switches, including the Apple
-
5:15 - 5:18Wireless Keyboard. I use Tecla Shield DOS
-
5:18 - 5:20set to White Mode. One thing to note
-
5:20 - 5:23about using this is that the Tecla Shield
-
5:23 - 5:25DOS sends the signal to iOS when the
-
5:25 - 5:28switch user releases the switch. This
-
5:28 - 5:30took me a while to get used to, because
-
5:30 - 5:33all other switch hardware including the
-
5:33 - 5:35first generation Tecla Shield sends a
-
5:35 - 5:38signal as soon as the switch is pressed.
-
5:40 - 5:44Thanks for that Alex.
-
5:45 - 5:51I hope you enjoyed this video and found it
-
5:51 - 5:53helpful.
-
5:54 - 5:59I'll see you again next time.
-
6:00 - 6:04This is Christopher and Alex

6:04 - 6:09from Down Under.
