Complete Guide To Vegan Food
-
0:04 - 0:08When you first go Vegan, it can seem
overwhelming figuring out what to eat. -
0:08 - 0:12The idea of finding new recipes and
checking labels appears daunting. -
0:12 - 0:15but it's much easier than you'd think.
-
0:15 - 0:19Regardless of how healthy you want to be,
how much money you have to spend or -
0:19 - 0:23wherever you are in the world, there are
always plenty of things to eat as a Vegan. -
0:23 - 0:26Although I personally eat a diet rich in
whole foods like fruits, vegetables, -
0:26 - 0:30beans, potatos and rice, the animals
and the planet don't care what you -
0:30 - 0:32eat as long as you aren't harming
and destroying them. -
0:32 - 0:34Just bare in mind that you will be
-
0:34 - 0:37much healthier eating a diet rich in whole
foods and you won't feel your best if you -
0:37 - 0:41are undercarbed and undernourished. One
of the most important things for Vegans, -
0:41 - 0:44especially new Vegans, is to understand
that the whole plant foods are much less -
0:44 - 0:48calorically dense than animal products. If
you undereat you will feel weak and dizzy -
0:48 - 0:50and making this mistake can often
discourage people from living -
0:50 - 0:54compassionately. Therefore it's important
to ensure that you consume enough -
0:54 - 0:58calories for your age, size and activity
level. It's often a good idea for new -
0:58 - 1:01Vegans to use websites or apps like
Cronometer to make sure that they're -
1:01 - 1:04eating enough for the first week or so.
-
1:04 - 1:08For breakfast there are many cereals that
are Vegan. Use a dairy free milk and add -
1:08 - 1:11things like fruits and nuts. Oatmeal is
also a great option and tastes great with -
1:11 - 1:14cinnamon and fruit like raisins,
dates, apples and bananas. -
1:15 - 1:19Toast or bagels are another option. You
can top these with jam, fruit, nut -
1:19 - 1:23butters, hummus, guacamole, dairy free
butter, Marmite, tofu scrambles or even -
1:23 - 1:26do a full Vegan fry-up with scrambles,
beans, mushrooms and Vegan sausages -
1:26 - 1:27and bacon.
-
1:27 - 1:31A fruit based breakfast is perfect for
starting the day energised and hydrated. -
1:31 - 1:35You can have a fruit monomeal with just
one fruit and you can make fruit salads, -
1:35 - 1:38smoothies, ice creams and juices are also
great for accompanying something like -
1:38 - 1:42cereal. But remember to base your meal off
of calorically dense fruits like dates, -
1:42 - 1:46bananas and mangoes. These fruits can make
up a meal or as it's not easy to make a -
1:46 - 1:48meal out of something like berries.
-
1:48 - 1:52For lunch, bread based meals are very
popular. Using fillings like salad, hummus -
1:52 - 1:56and avocado you can make all kinds of
sandwiches, burritos, pittas and wraps. -
1:57 - 2:00You can also make great pizzas too.
And you can also have pasta salads, -
2:00 - 2:03potato salads, couscous salads and quinoa
salads for lunch. -
2:04 - 2:08For dinner you can make a Vegan quiche, a
stir-fry with wheat or rice noodles and -
2:08 - 2:12potato wedges, curries and chillies with
pasta, mash or noodles. You can have Vegan -
2:12 - 2:17burger or fish products with chips. Pasta
bakes, potato bakes and all kinds of -
2:17 - 2:21soups. You can make stuffed peppers or
mushrooms, spaghetti bolognese and -
2:21 - 2:26sheppard's pie. Vegan sausages, mash and
veg are great and Vegan pizza is amazing. -
2:26 - 2:30For desserts you can make or buy so many
great Vegan cakes, pies, cheesecakes and -
2:30 - 2:34chocolates. You can have ice cream,
sorbets, biscuits, bars and chocolate -
2:34 - 2:39mousses. Fruit is also a great dessert.
For snacks fresh and dried fruit works -
2:39 - 2:44well. As do rice cakes, crackers and nuts.
There are loads of Vegan bars like Trek -
2:44 - 2:48bars, Nakd bars, Cliff bars, Rude bars,
Frank bars and Luna bars. There are -
2:48 - 2:52plenty of Vegan flapjacks and many
biscuits, crisps, sweets and chocolates -
2:52 - 2:53that are accidentally Vegan.
-
2:53 - 2:57When you're eating out, use the app or
website HappyCow, which will show you -
2:57 - 3:01all the Vegan friendly restaurants near
by. And there's always something Vegan -
3:01 - 3:04friendly that you can pick up to snack on.
For example you can get a cheap pack of -
3:04 - 3:08pitta bread and eat it with a salad bowl
and hummus. And you can also get things -
3:08 - 3:10like bars and fruit juices.
-
3:10 - 3:14Although things like meat and dairy
substitutes are nice, they can be quite -
3:14 - 3:18expensive and we don't need them to be
healthy. You can be healthy and ethical -
3:18 - 3:22eating for less than 5$ a day. Rice,
potatoes, pasta, beans, oats, corn, -
3:22 - 3:26bananas and raisins are the cheapest foods
you can buy. And if you base your diet -
3:26 - 3:30around eating them, it'll be a lot cheaper
to live. -
3:30 - 3:34If you're busy with things like family,
school or work, or just feeling lazy, here -
3:34 - 3:36are some tips for saving time:
-
3:36 - 3:40Make food in bulk and freeze or
refrigerate it. You can then have these -
3:40 - 3:43meals throughout the week and months
with minimal effort. Most people don't -
3:43 - 3:46get enough time to eat a proper
breakfast. Oatmeal is quick to make and -
3:46 - 3:50very filling, so eat a big bowl of that
first thing. If you're going out early get -
3:50 - 3:54a bottle blender and quickly blend filling
fruits like bananas, then drink your -
3:54 - 3:56breakfast smoothie while walking or in
buses and trains. -
3:57 - 4:00It's also a good idea to carry dried fruit
like raisins and dates around to snack on -
4:00 - 4:04when you get a spare minute. Pitta breads
are also quick and easy to snack on. -
4:04 - 4:07And for making meals, instead of chopping
and preparing loads of vegetables and -
4:07 - 4:12things, use frozen ones that are already
prepared. Although you do not need meat, -
4:12 - 4:15dairy and egg substitutes to be healthy,
many of them are great if you miss the -
4:15 - 4:17taste and texture of unethical animal
products. -
4:18 - 4:21Some of these are in supermarkets but
health stores and online shops will have -
4:21 - 4:25a much larger variety. There are loads to
choose from like Vegan cheeses, meats, -
4:25 - 4:29milks, yogurts, ice creams, cakes,
chocolates, burgers, sausages and even egg -
4:29 - 4:34replacers. Many new Vegans don't realise
that not all alcohol is Vegan. Some -
4:34 - 4:37contain gelatin which is made from animal
bones. And many are filtered through -
4:37 - 4:42isinglass, which is from the swim bladders
of fish. So if you go to barnivore.com, -
4:42 - 4:45they have lists which will tell you which
products are or not Vegan. -
4:45 - 4:49It is worth mentioning that a lot of Vegan
process foods contain palm oil. -
4:49 - 4:52Although new Vegans should focus on things
like meat, dairy and eggs before worrying -
4:52 - 4:56about palm oil, it is an unethical product
which causes a great deal of harm to both -
4:56 - 5:00animals and the environment. This is
why many Vegans choose to avoid it while -
5:00 - 5:01possible.
-
5:01 - 5:05It can seem overwhelming trying to look on
labels of familiar products. So here's how -
5:05 - 5:09to quickly work out if something is Vegan:
look out for the obvious ingredients like -
5:09 - 5:13meat, dairy, eggs and honey (dairy and
eggs are often in bold and in the allergen -
5:13 - 5:17list, but meat and honey aren't);
a "suitable for vegatarians" label will -
5:17 - 5:20quickly show you if something contains
meat, but look out for these common -
5:20 - 5:26ingredients: casein, whey, rennet and
lactose come from dairy products, although -
5:26 - 5:31lactic acid is almost always Vegan. And
carmine which is also called "red 5", -
5:31 - 5:36"E120" or "cochineal" or "carminic acid"
which comes from insects and is used as -
5:36 - 5:42a red dye. And beeswax and shellac which
are often used as coatings for things like -
5:42 - 5:46sweets. Also look out for vitamin D3 which
is extracted from either fish or sheep's -
5:46 - 5:56wool. And look out for E numbers E542,
E913, E966 and E1105. It's impossible to list -
5:56 - 5:59every single ingredient, so in the
description I've included lists with Vegan -
5:59 - 6:03and non-Vegan ingredients and E numbers,
which you can use for quick referencing. -
6:03 - 6:06Don't worry about making mistakes and
accidentally eating something with an -
6:06 - 6:09animal ingredient. You'll learn as you go!
-
6:10 - 6:13Just by eating lots of whole plant foods
you'll get virtually everything you need. -
6:13 - 6:17But you can use Cronometer to check if
you're getting enough. If you find that -
6:17 - 6:20you don't eat enough of a certain
nutrient, look on this list on adaptt.org -
6:20 - 6:23which explains exactly which foods to eat
to get each nutrient. -
6:24 - 6:28Vitamin D should ideally be sourced from
the sun but if that's not possible, eat -
6:28 - 6:32some fortified foods like dairy free milks
or take a supplement. Since credible -
6:32 - 6:37doctors like Michael Greger recommend
supplemeting B12, I recommend taking -
6:37 - 6:42a weekly B12 supplement providing at least
2000 mg. You can find recipes to all the -
6:42 - 6:46meals recommended using google and
Youtube. Simply search "Vegan recipes" or -
6:46 - 6:50"Vegan what i eat in a day". I recommend
checking out channels like The Vegan -
6:50 - 6:53Corner and plantbasedjudy.
-
6:53 - 6:56No one really wants to harm animals,
people or the environment. -
6:56 - 7:02And by choosing to be Vegan you have the power
to save over 1,100 gallons of water, 45lb -
7:02 - 7:09of grain, 30 sq ft of forrest and land,
20lb of CO2 and 1 animal's life. -
7:09 - 7:11Every single day.
-
7:11 - 7:15Regardless of how much time or money you
have, what foods you enjoy and how healthy -
7:15 - 7:18you want to be it so easy to eat Vegan.
