Harold Pinter_No Man's Land_Bolsova Street Directions

  • 0:00 - 0:13
    [BRIGGS] Now, well,
We’re old friends, Jack and myself.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
We met on a street corner.
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    I should warn you
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    he’ll deny this account.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    His story will be different.
  • 0:38 - 0:44
    So there I was, and
I was standing at a street corner.
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    And this car drew up.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    And it was him.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
And he asked me the way
    to Bolsover street.
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    So I said to him,
  • 0:58 - 1:03
But Bolsover street, it's in the middle
    of an intricate one-way system.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    Now, it's a one-way system
    easy enough to get into.
  • 1:09 - 1:14
The only trouble was that, once in,
    you couldn’t get out.
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    So I told him
  • 1:19 - 1:22
the best thing that he could do,
  • 1:23 - 1:29
was to take the first left,
    and then the first right,
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    then the second right,
and then the third on the left,
  • 1:33 - 1:36
and to keep his eye open
    for a hardware shop,
  • 1:36 - 1:40
and then go right round the square,
    keeping to the inside lane,
  • 1:40 - 1:43
and take the second Mews on the right
    and then stop.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    He'll find himself
facing a very tall office block,
  • 1:48 - 1:49
    with a crescent courtyard.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    Now he can take advantage
    of this tower block.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
Because he can go round the crescent,
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    following the arrows,
go through two sets of traffic lights
  • 1:59 - 2:04
and take the next left indicated by
the first green filter he comes across.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
He’s got the Post Office Tower
in his vision the whole time.
  • 2:09 - 2:12
All he’s got to do is to reverse
    into the underground car park,
  • 2:12 - 2:16
    change gear, go straight on,
and he’ll find himself in Bolsover street:
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    no trouble at all
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    I did warn him,
  • 2:22 - 2:24
he will still be faced with the problem,
  • 2:24 - 2:28
    of having found Bolsover street,
    of losing it.
  • 2:29 - 2:34
I told him I knew one or two people
  • 2:34 - 2:37
who’d been wandering up and down
    Bolsover street for years.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    Wasted their fucking youth there.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
You see, the people of Bolsover street,
  • 2:48 - 2:51
they’re in a state of despair, but nobody pays any attention, you see.
  • Not Synced
    their faces are grey,
  • Not Synced
All people are worried about is their ill-gotten gains.
  • Not Synced
I wrote to The Times about it.
  • Not Synced
Life At A Dead End, l called it.
  • Not Synced
    Went for nothing.
  • Not Synced
Anyway, I told him that probably the best thing he could do
  • Not Synced
was to forget the whole idea of getting to Bolsover street.
  • Not Synced
    I remember saying to him:
  • Not Synced
This trip you’ve got in mind, drop it, it could prove fatal.
  • Not Synced
But he said he had to deliver a parcel.
  • Not Synced
Anyway, I took all this trouble with him because he had a nice open face.
  • Not Synced
He looked like a man who would always do good to others himself.
  • Not Synced
    Normally I wouldn’t give a fuck.
  • Not Synced
I should tell you he’ll deny this account.
  • Not Synced
    His story will be different.
