-
0:00 - 0:13[BRIGGS] Now, well,
We’re old friends, Jack and myself. -
0:15 - 0:17We met on a street corner.
-
0:21 - 0:22I should warn you
-
0:25 - 0:27he’ll deny this account.
-
0:29 - 0:32His story will be different.
-
0:38 - 0:44So there I was, and
I was standing at a street corner. -
0:45 - 0:46And this car drew up.
-
0:46 - 0:49And it was him.
-
0:50 - 0:53And he asked me the way
to Bolsover street. -
0:55 - 0:57So I said to him,
-
0:58 - 1:03But Bolsover street, it's in the middle
of an intricate one-way system. -
1:05 - 1:08Now, it's a one-way system
easy enough to get into. -
1:09 - 1:14The only trouble was that, once in,
you couldn’t get out. -
1:17 - 1:18So I told him
-
1:19 - 1:22the best thing that he could do,
-
1:23 - 1:29was to take the first left,
and then the first right, -
1:30 - 1:33then the second right,
and then the third on the left, -
1:33 - 1:36and to keep his eye open
for a hardware shop, -
1:36 - 1:40and then go right round the square,
keeping to the inside lane, -
1:40 - 1:43and take the second Mews on the right
and then stop. -
1:45 - 1:48He'll find himself
facing a very tall office block, -
1:48 - 1:49with a crescent courtyard.
-
1:50 - 1:52Now he can take advantage
of this tower block. -
1:52 - 1:55Because he can go round the crescent,
-
1:55 - 1:59following the arrows,
go through two sets of traffic lights -
1:59 - 2:04and take the next left indicated by
the first green filter he comes across. -
2:05 - 2:08He’s got the Post Office Tower
in his vision the whole time. -
2:09 - 2:12All he’s got to do is to reverse
into the underground car park, -
2:12 - 2:16change gear, go straight on,
and he’ll find himself in Bolsover street: -
2:16 - 2:17no trouble at all
-
2:19 - 2:21I did warn him,
-
2:22 - 2:24he will still be faced with the problem,
-
2:24 - 2:28of having found Bolsover street,
of losing it. -
2:29 - 2:34I told him I knew one or two people
-
2:34 - 2:37who’d been wandering up and down
Bolsover street for years. -
2:38 - 2:41Wasted their fucking youth there.
-
2:43 - 2:46You see, the people of Bolsover street,
-
2:48 - 2:51they’re in a state of despair, but nobody pays any attention, you see.
-
Not Syncedtheir faces are grey,
-
Not SyncedAll people are worried about is their ill-gotten gains.
-
Not SyncedI wrote to The Times about it.
-
Not SyncedLife At A Dead End, l called it.
-
Not SyncedWent for nothing.
-
Not SyncedAnyway, I told him that probably the best thing he could do
-
Not Syncedwas to forget the whole idea of getting to Bolsover street.
-
Not SyncedI remember saying to him:
-
Not SyncedThis trip you’ve got in mind, drop it, it could prove fatal.
-
Not SyncedBut he said he had to deliver a parcel.
-
Not SyncedAnyway, I took all this trouble with him because he had a nice open face.
-
Not SyncedHe looked like a man who would always do good to others himself.
-
Not SyncedNormally I wouldn’t give a fuck.
-
Not SyncedI should tell you he’ll deny this account.
-
Not SyncedHis story will be different.
