0:18 - 0:20One of the Chinese people’s Four Great Inventions,

0:20 - 0:25paper was invented and developed in the 2nd-century-BC by the Han Dynasty.

0:25 - 0:28The idea eventually traveled to Europe,

0:28 - 0:32where paper mills began manufacturing the product on a larger scale.

0:32 - 0:35Without paper, the printing press would never have been invented,
-
0:35 - 0:37and our world would be very different:

0:37 - 0:42we would not have maps, paper currency, or books to disperse information
-
0:42 - 0:44– its impact is truly endless.

0:48 - 0:52sailors depended on landmarks or even the stars to navigate their ships.

0:52 - 0:57But once the Chinese began using lodestones and magnetism to find their bearings

0:57 - 0:59between the 9th and 11th centuries,

0:59 - 1:02it quickly spread to the Arab world and to Europe.

1:02 - 1:05This not only made circumnavigation of the globe easier,

1:05 - 1:10it also made it safer, which kicked off the Age of Discovery.

1:13 - 1:18Though ice was used since prehistoric times to prevent food from spoiling and developing bacteria,

1:18 - 1:24the concept of refrigeration was only developed in earnest starting in the mid-1700s.

1:24 - 1:27The process was then refined and improved,

1:27 - 1:31changing the way the food industry transports and stores food.

1:31 - 1:34The implications of this discovery are far-reaching;

1:34 - 1:37as it transformed the way we eat and live.

1:40 - 1:43Though Johannes Gutenberg is credited with this invention,
-
1:43 - 1:47he actually perfected and popularized existing technology.

1:47 - 1:52By combining the Chinese principle of movable type with European press systems
-
1:52 - 1:57already in use for winemaking, Gutenberg created the machine that printed text on a wide scale,
-
1:57 - 2:01which in turn lowered the price of books and helped spread information
-
2:01 - 2:05and knowledge to the masses, spurring the Reformation, the Renaissance
-
2:05 - 2:08and the Scientific Revolution.

2:10 - 2:15The landscape of major cities would be drastically different without this innovation

2:15 - 2:19– after all, how would a high-rise exist without modern plumbing?

2:19 - 2:22Evolving from holes in the ground, to chamber pots, to outhouses
-
2:22 - 2:28and eventually to flush toilets as early as the 31st-26th centuries BC,
-
2:28 - 2:31the development of plumbing improved living conditions for millions of people
-
2:31 - 2:35across the globe and lengthened our lifespans.

2:38 - 2:43Many medicines and vaccinations have extended and changed our lives significantly
-
2:43 - 2:45Discovered by accident by Alexander Fleming,
-
2:45 - 2:51penicillin was the first group of drugs that fought illnesses like syphilis and strep infections.
-
2:51 - 2:53On the other side of the spectrum,
-
2:53 - 2:56since they were introduced to the public in the 1960s
-
2:56 - 3:01contraceptives such as the birth control pill helped level out the global population
-
3:01 - 3:04and launched a revolution in social change.

3:07 - 3:11These engines got industry and the population moving.

3:11 - 3:15Instead of relying on horses as transportation, people traveled across the countryside
-
3:15 - 3:19via Thomas Newcomen’s steam engine as of 1712,
-
3:19 - 3:22which was improved upon by James Watt later that century,
-
3:22 - 3:28quickly becoming the backbone of society and sparking the Industrial Revolution.

3:28 - 3:30Internal combustion ultimately replaced steam
-
3:30 - 3:33and ushered in the Second Industrial Revolution,
-
3:33 - 3:37and allowed individuals to affordably travel great distances.

3:40 - 3:45Though it’s still unclear which civilization was first to invent this simple machine in the 4th-century BC,
-
3:45 - 3:49it’s obvious that it’s been one of the world’s most vital innovations.

3:49 - 3:54The transportation, commerce and travel industries wouldn’t be the same without it,
-
3:54 - 3:59and today the wheel can be found in every aspect of our daily lives,
-
3:59 - 4:04from water wheels, gears, motors and engines, to more fun applications.

4:07 - 4:11Several inventions changed global communications forever:

4:11 - 4:15Samuel Morse brought us the electric telegraph in 1836,
-
4:15 - 4:18Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone was the first
-
4:18 - 4:22to be awarded a patent to transmit voices in 1876,
-
4:22 - 4:27Guglielmo Marconi and Nikola Tesla developed radio in the late-19th-century,
-
4:27 - 4:33moving pictures first came across John Logie Baird’s television in 1925,
-
4:33 - 4:36Konrad Zuse developed the first computer in the early-‘40s,
-
4:36 - 4:40and Tim Berners-Lee proposed the World-Wide-Web in the late-‘80s
-
4:40 - 4:44– and all made the world a little bit smaller.
