Sometimes the actions of a hero
-
teach us about active self-protection.
-
Tell us about what to do- what not to do
-
and how to be ready in the moment.
-
Hi everyone, this is John with today's
active self-protection lesson.
-
Comes to us out of Las Vegas
-
and this is video from the murder
of two officers
-
in Las Vegas in 2014.
-
But we're going to focus on the heroic
actions of the CCW holder who tried to
-
intervene that day.
-
His name is Joseph Wilcox. I think he's
brave as all get out and I honor him for
-
what he did. But let's learn some lessons
here about doing so in smart ways about
-
fighting the fights that we can win and
about the dangers that we might face if
-
if we choose to step in as a Good Samaritan.
-
The two perpetrators here are walking in
-
to this Walmart and they are about to
cause havoc and kill a lot of people.
-
And I want to listen to the homicide
detective who did the investigation and
-
then we will come back and learn some
lessons from what happened
-
We'll see Jared still walking ahead of Amanda
-
and then they'll come around that northeast
-
corner of the store where they proceeded
to walk southbound along the store all
-
the way to the entrance.
-
The two will enter the store in the same
order.
-
Jared Miller goes in first.
-
Jared comes in.
-
He initially starts yelling loudly
-
about a revolution which has started.
-
It's at about this point here that
Jared Miller
-
fires a warning shot into the ceiling
-
This draws Mr. Wilcox's attention and he
remains focused on Jared as Jared
-
continues to go further into the store.
-
I believe the separation between Amanda
and Jared has caused Joseph Wilcox to
-
not believe that Amanda Miller is with
Jared and she goes unnoticed by him.
-
She quickly turns and fires one shot
from her Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun.
-
And the gunshot is immediately
incapacitating and Mr. Wilcox goes down
-
in the aisle.
-
So let's go back and think about some
lessons from this incident.
-
We see Wilcox here-
-
Our CCW Good Samaritan sees what's
going on but he doesn't see the
-
trailing bad guy here, he doesn't see the
trailing multiple attackers.
-
So now this guy's began
yelling and actually started firing
-
warning shots, our CCW guy pulls his
firearm and I'm just going to tell you
-
guys I don't recommend you get involved
in third-party encounters. And this is why.
-
Not that he did a bad thing here; he
did a very very good thing in trying to
-
protect everyone and stop this conflict,
but he didn't know what was going on
-
behind him.
-
So now he's following he's
trying to figure out where the source of
-
the shots are coming from and you see he
doesn't notice the trailing multiple
-
attacker and because of that he goes to
engage the bad guy.
-
He sees and she ambushes him
-
from behind and murders him.
-
And of course this is just a rare
-
occurrence but this is one of the
reasons I say that involving yourself in
-
a third-party incident is generally
speaking not what you want to do.
-
Mr. Wilcox lost his life in this
encounter.
-
Was killed by one shot from
-
the trailing gunman who I won't name.
-
You know that reminds us ASP'ers: If
you're going to step
-
into someone else's encounter
-
you got to think about the cost on your
family.
-
I'm not saying that he did the
-
wrong thing here. In fact I applaud him
for his bravery and his willingness to
-
step in to try to stop the loss
of life of innocent people,
-
but you imagine what the cost on your
spouse, on your children, on your family
-
could be if something like this were to
happen to you.
-
I can't tell you enough about spiritual
fitness ASP'ers.
-
You got to be at peace
-
with the people around you those who
love you in your life, as well as with
-
God because you never know when your
last day on earth is going to be.
-
It also teaches us about the chaos
-
of an active shooter situation,
as well as being aware
-
of multiple attackers and that trailing
gunman.
-
And always being aware of what's
-
going on around you.
-
This footage right here is the reason
that I tell you, that generally speaking
-
I would not step in to an active shooter
situation.
-
I would not step into a
third-party encounter
-
unless my life depended on it or the
life of my loved ones,
-
because the cost could be so high,
that it might cost you your life.
