Hello everyone.

Um, I hope you and your family
are doing well,

uh, your loved ones are doing fine.

Um, wow, we've come to this right?

We're transitioning to online.

And, uh, most of your classes, I believe
at ACC they sent out an email

that all the classes will be transitioning
to online, even those, the ones

that they thought where you might
have to go in person and do,

like, those hands-on kinda classes like
auto mechanics or welding.

Uh, I think they have decided that they're
gonna go ahead and

just bring them on to an online setting.

So, with that being said, there's a couple
of reasons that I'm doing this video.

Uh, and I want to first begin with
some disclaimers, if you would allow me.

The first disclaimer is, uh, unfortunately
my air conditioner broke in my home.

So, uh, I am sweaty, sorry,
it's just super hot in here.

Uh, you know, so I'm also going to be
drinking a lot of water.

I gotta stay hydrated.

Unfortunately I have underlying
health conditions

that I have to make sure I drink

a lot of water and not get overheated.

So, uh, bear with me when I'm talking
and I'm gulping down my water.

Excuse that, I don't mean
to be rude or anything.

Uh, also to, I'm sorry for my distraction
of pictures in the background.

It's because I'm actually
filming in my bedroom.

I do not have office space in my home.

When I finished my Ph.D.,
I did away with office space.

That was just not something that I'm real
too crazy about, because every time, for me,

an office space, it meant school.

So, you know, anyway, I kinda
regret that now because

I sure could use office space.

But anyway, uh, I don't
have an office space,

so the best place in my home is my bedroom.

The most, quietest place because all
my family is in the other room over there.

And, uh, I want to try to have,
minimal distractions.

Another disclaimer is I live
close to a military base,

so this means I may have
airplanes flying overhead.

So if that happens when I'm talking
I'll just turn silent,

I'll wait for it to pass,
and then I'll continue to talk.

Again apologies if this is not
a clear, wonderful video.

I'm not a YouTuber.

I am not digital anything.

I'm just, I'm on here just for
the purpose of, um, giving

y'all some course updates.

And again, apologies for the distraction.

Apologies for the lighting.

Again, I'm just working with what I have.

Um, a lot of you, have been emailing
and texting me and calling me

very, very concerned.

And I totally get that, a lot of you
are really, have anxiety, really nervous

about going into an online setting.

What I want to say to you is:

You know me.

You know what I expect from you.

You know the assignments.

So, the class is not a brand
new class, thank goodness.

We've had a while together.

So we're now in the last 7 weeks
of our course.

So let that be a source of comfort for you.

Uh, also too, I am always available
for you the best way I can be

text, call me, uh, we can video chat,
whatever you're comfortable with.

Definitely find me, look for me,
hunt me down.

I will respond back to you.

Give me 24 hours at least.

I'm, I'm usually quicker at responding,
but if you can, give me 24 hours.

Uh, and also too, I will be having
surgery this Friday but, you know,

I will be able to get out of it
and you know,

if you need to get in contact with me,

I will try my best to call
you back on Friday.

Okay?

So, uh, I, I made this video
and I quickly learned,

we just got a software, the faculty did,

uh, it's called Collaborate Ultra.

And, uh, we're having to learn it, uh,
very quickly, so I am not a guru at this

particular software, but I at least
tried to learn how to record.

So that's a start.

And I wanted to give you a tour of our
course room and be able to give you some

type of face-to-face interaction
in terms of explaining updates and

modifications to assignments and etc.

Okay?

Uh, please, if you're taking other classes,
make sure you get in touch with

your professors, read their emails,
be reading their announcements if they

do that in Blackboard, their texts,
however they communicate with you,

make sure that you are up on that.

Because every professor will set up
their course room differently.

There will be different expectations,
different modifications to assignments,

maybe some professors will not do
any kind of modifications, that would

depend upon the professor, okay?

So, I tried, during this whole last week—

I didn't have Spring Break, 'cause

I started working on this right away.

I really wanted to just make things very
simple for y'all, and, uh, doable.

I didn't change the assignments, per se,
but I just wanted something that you

could follow along without me
seeing my face and reminding you.

So, um, I wanna begin also too with, uh,

I can understand the anxiety
of what you're feeling.

Um, my concerns are a couple of areas.

One, are students who continue
battling procrastination,

that are putting things off
to the last minute.

Students who fail to turn in assignments.

Students who fail to reach out to me.

Um, they're coming to class, but they're
not turning anything in.

If you fall into any one
of those categories,

this is the time for you to step up.

And really, um, dig in, and try to finish
the last 7 weeks of the course

And so, uh, again, this means
sticking to deadlines.

This means working ahead of time.

I know our situations have changed for a
lot of us, especially in the job arena.

We may have to take another job.

Maybe our job has ended, etc.

But please know the expectations
in terms of completing assignments

and completing them complete complete,
not halfway, and on time,

is still expected from you.

And the only reason for that is I want
you all to move on forward from this class.

Don't make this drag out longer than
you have to is what I'm saying.

The other, the other concern
that I have are

students that do not have
access to technology.

So, if you're just relying on your
cell phone, I'm gonna tell you right now,

you may have some challenges because
Blackboard sometimes has glitches

and technical issues, especially with
the display or video such as this.

On Blackboard, when you use, sorry,
when you use a cell phone or tablet.

So just kind of keep that in mind.

It's not that you can't do it, it's just
that you're going to have to allow

yourself more time for those kinds
of weird things to happen.

Okay?

So make sure you keep that in mind.

I would really, strongly recommend
a laptop or a desktop.

Uh, Apple works pretty good.

If you're not an Apple fan, you're
a PC fan, it's probably even better.

I'm actually using, I'm an Apple person,

but I'm actually using
my husband's PC laptop

because I couldn't do Collaborate on Apple.

So, my, point 1 for my husband
because he's always ragging on me

to get a, uh, PC.

So anyway, so um, so If you see me
kinda like getting frustrated

because I'm not used to
his computer, his laptop.

So anyway, sorry about that.

So I'm not used to his laptop,

so if you see me kind of
stumbling, it means that I,

I know what I'm doing I just don't
know how to work his laptop.

So anyway, um, just be aware
of that if you're counting.

The other thing too is if any
of your classes, such as this one—

I'm not gonna do a lot of videos of this
class in terms of me sharing a video

uh, with y'all like I'm doing right now.

This will be probably the longest video
for the rest of the semester.

I may do a couple more,

if I need to send you an urgent message
or something to that extent.

But most of the time time,
I think this will be

the longest one I ever send to y'all.

Um, uh, be aware that other
professors may use it a lot, the video.

It will eat your battery.

So, uh, on your laptops, cell phones.

I tried watching a one-hour training
online using Collaborate,

uh, what we're using right now,

what you're looking at right now, and
my Apple was at 100% and then by one hour

it was down to like 20%.

And, I did it purposely,
I didn't hook it up,

because I wanted to see.

So, yeah, it, it does eat up your battery,
so be very aware of that.

Um, so make sure you are using those
things or cell phone to watch videos

of your professors on
this Collaborate Ultra,

that you are plugged in somewhere,

because it will kill your battery.

Again, like I mentioned I'm very concerned
about students that don't have access

to internet or WiFi.

This is gonna be the
biggest challenge for you.

Before when I taught online I
could always tell my students cafes,

go to the library, go to ACC campus.

We can't do that right now,
at least for a while.

Uh, all of us, as you know, are
under lockdown, so I want to stress,

that I do not want this to discourage you,

but I do need for you to reach out to me

as all your professors are gonna want
the same thing from you.

Please, let us know, what is going on
with you technology-wise.

What issues are you having?

I am not a technical guru;
that is not my area of expertise.

However we do have the ACC Help Desk and,
uh, they will probably be backed up,

but they will get to you if you
have some kind of question.

But let your professor know if you can't
upload, download, reload, whatever.

Any weirdness is happening with Blackboard,
uh, let us know, so that that way we

know, we know something's going on.

Uh, and you will need to contact the
Help Desk to solve it quickly.

Do not let it drag on.

I will, for me, I have an
alternate way for you all

to submit things in worst-case scenario.

But we will deal with that if
you should have trouble.

But for me I've done this
with my students in the past.

Those who've had issues with Wi-Fi
that failed at their home or whatever,

internet, um, they, I, I, we,
we could still get your assignment in,

let me put it that way.

But anyway, for your other professors,

they might be a little bit
more of a challenge.

With me, I can, I can work around that.

But let me know, okay?

And in advance too, don't wait,
don't wait til the day it's due,

the assignment and I
had a technical glitch.

Let me know ahead of time, you know.

So, um, those are the ones that
I'm kind of worried about,

is those students that really don't
have that technology and also too,

I will work with you, I'm gonna show you,
we're gonna do a little tour

of our updated course room and how
you could submit assignments and

what you see when you
open up your Blackboard.

Okay.

But, again, uh, I'm concerned
about my procrastinators, my,

uh, not submitting anything.

Uh, you guys are at a high risk and
you've gotta, uh, please know that,

and really step up if you are
wanting to pass the course.

Okay?

Um, also too, the ones that have
technology issues are my concern as well.

And again, I'll work with
you on that as well.

But I really, I know we haven't talked
for almost two weeks and I want

to try to give you as much information
as I can tonight before

a lot of times, you may find that,
um, gotta open up in here,

you may find that, um, sorry, you may
find that you get thrown out

or that there's a glitch.

So there is a way for you to click on
here, and you can go out of Blackboard

and still access your OER textbook.

So if you ever have any weirdness
that happens, while you're reading

your OER textbook while you're inside
Blackboard, you can go back over here

and pull up that link right here and it
will take you to outside of Blackboard.

start with chapter 15.

We only have 15-16-17 and 18, okay, to go.

That's we've got four chapters left
aside from the other assignments.

And I'm gonna get more into that
in a little while, okay?

I am really wanting to give
you the grand tour.

And so we're gonna look at chapter 15,
planning for your activities.

You will see the deadline.

So everything, all the activities and the
assignments associated with Chapter 15

will be due April 14th.

Okay?

That is your next big date.

Now, can I just say that every, you have
until midnight on the 14th, 11:59 pm

to be precise, to turn everything in.

Make sure you do not, I repeat,
wait to the last minute.

The thing with Blackboard, folks, most,
most schools in the United States

are going to Blackboard.

Okay?

Most schools K-12 and higher, we have
Canvas, it's like a Blackboard, but most

are using Blackboard.

So if you've got students who are like
yourself procrastinators and want to

submit an assignment at 11:59, imagine
millions of students at the same time

trying to submit, you run the
risk of it crashing on you.

That, what, you know technology, right?

It's convenient and it's great
but it, it's not,

it's not 100% foolproof, so just make sure

that you're not pushing your luck by
waiting to 11:59, because you run a

real good risk of it not going through,
crashing, acting weird, etc, okay?

There is a chance that Blackboard can
crash, but we professors get notified

and our Blackboard will crash.

So, uh, just know that we will let you
know if there's something going on

in regards to that.

So, if you look on here, it, it
tells you about Activity 1.

You're gonna read your
OER chapter in textbook.

So you're gonna read your chapter,
you're gonna read chapters now,

I've taken out the power points
because that's for lecture and

I'm not gonna be lecturing.

So, um, you can
read the chapter.

And then you're going to
review the presentation

on FOCUS 2 and you're gonna find that.

So you kinda scroll down.

I'll let you in your own time
read all of that stuff.

But let's just go down here and it kind
of tells you what you're going to get

out of chapter 15.

And then as you keep going down it tells

you the first activity
you're gonna read.

Second activity you're gonna, uh, get the

Career Exploration Presentation
and Directions.

before I forget,

With FOCUS 2, if for some of you
who have taken EDUC1300 before,

and you failed it, and this is your
second or third time taking the class,

not with me, but with any
of the other professors,

you might have already
done a FOCUS 2 assignment

and you may run into problems,
with, um, setting up your user name,

or you forgotten your
user name or password.

There is a way to reset that,
but if you're still having problems,

I want to suggest you go talk to a,
uh, your AOS adviser and let them

know you're having trouble logging in
and, uh, they will reset it for you.

But that requires you to get
working on this ahead of time,

because you don't know.

Okay, so then the next activity
is FOCUS 2 the actual assignment.

You're gonna download it right in
here and you'll start working on it.

I don't mind if you write out this
assignment, just as long as you've

got very nice handwriting.

You can print.

But if you have handwriting issues,
may I suggest you type out your answers.

You don't have to type it on the form,
you can type it in a Word document

and just submit that.

Like number 1, type out the
question and then the answer.

Again, you're gonna be sent
directly to the YouTube video.

Activity 5, ah,
Journal Assignments, right?

So, on here, the journal assignments—

I made some modifications to that and
I'll talk about that in just a little bit.

But we will not do 7 entries for
the second round of journals.

We're only gonna do 2 and
each one will be worth 25 points.

So they don't lose the value.

Remember round 1 the journal
was worth 50 points.

Round 2 will be worth 50 points
as well, except in Round 2, you're

only gonna have two journal entries.

For those of you who are working ahead
and you've already done your journals,

please submit 'em.

I do not do this, okay?

But for those of you that have not,
then follow directions here on Blackboard.

I want to click on one of these links
because I kind of want to show you, uh,

let me click on the journal assignment.

Anything that has an underline,
you're gonna click on.

Okay?

So, you will see the due date
and you will see the points.

Remember this
is just one journal.

Twenty-five points.

You're gonna have another journal
and it'll be worth 25 points

for a total of 50 points, okay?

And that's gonna be Round 2.

So, you will see here where it says
write submission, this does give you

the option you want for those of you
who do not have a clue about online,

have never taken an online course.

You can write out your journal
and submit it that way.

But, especially those that don't
have Word at home, but let me suggest,

let me tell you this,

the problem with that is,
if you get up or get distracted,

it may log you out and you've lost it.

So if you know you're gonna sit down and

you're gonna finish it and
make sure you save it,

you may wanna copy and paste
it to some kind of a,

you know a, some kind of a,
not if you don't

have Word, but maybe some kind of other,
uh, software where you wanna

you know, spellcheck and a
ll that kinda good stuff.

But I would be saving this.

I would not be leaving it open and walking
away because it can close down on you

and you lost it, so, uh,
be aware about that.

Again, this is for students that really,
are gonna sit down and they're gonna,

they're gonna spell, copy and paste it,
and they're gonna spellcheck and wrote

within 30 minutes or an hour kinda thing.

Uh, I would write it.

But if you don't like that, then I would
just go ahead and type it in a Word

document like you've been doing, or
any other kind of software that you use

for writing out documents.

And I would just go browsing
through my computer and upload it.

And once you browse through your computer,
you, you can look to see where, um,

you know, you're you're document is.

You can, you don't, like what you do.

You click on it, you attach it.

All that kinda good stuff.

And then you're gonna hit submit.

Okay?

Alrighty.

And if you're ever unsure, you're
like, did it got through?

Text me, call me.

I'll look it up.

You know, don't just assume because,
you know, technology is one of the great

um, can be a headache, right?

Okay.

So I'm just gonna back

Okay, so, um, each of your chapters
are going to be called like

"Chapter 16: Planning," you
know, that kind of thing.

You get activities and I'll
show you the next module.

Let me just stress this.

So, the first one is due April 14th
with all its little activities.

Make sure that you do
adhere to the deadline.

This is gonna be part of your
attendance and participation grade.

I'm not gonna have you posting to
discussion boards or anything like that.

But, uh, because some professors
do that to count that as your attendance.

I'm going to look at you
completing your activities, okay?

And your participation grade.

Remember we had the
library assignment, okay?

These activities are gonna not
replace the library assignment,

but they're gonna replace

the career portfolio because
we're not gonna do that.

And some other assignment I had
for you all, I forgot what it was,

but it's gonna replace that.

So, make sure you do
these activities because

it will count toward your attendance
and participation grade.

And make sure you do it on time.

The next thing I want to say,
make sure you do it on time, because

if, when this deadline passes,
this module has closed.

You cannot get back to it.

It's finished.

And, uh, whatever you
didn't turn in, it's a zero, okay?

So be very, very careful of that.

So I'm gonna take you to the next,
uh, little module here.

I'm gonna show the link because
you're not going to see it right now.

Let me just kinda scroll down again.

Now you see, I, I, skipped chapter 16.

I'm gonna, It's gonna come after 17.

And it was because, that's the
way it was in the syllabus

and i didn't want ya'll to, um,
I didn't want to change

a whole lot of things because
I know it's overwhelming,

the transition in itself.

So we're gonna jump to chapter 17,
diversity and cultural competencen—

competency, uh, unit lesson plan.

And you click on there
the same thing, like chapter 15.

You're gonna have, uh, you know,
your activities listed.

This deadline for everything is April 21st.

So, every week, if you notice the
date if you look at a calendar,

every week something is going
to be due from here on out, okay?

until we finish the semester.

So, um, you will see that and again, uh,
you're going to click on these

that have lines, you're
gonna click because

it's gonna take you to somewhere.

And there is activity 3.

Your journal assignment again.

Same thing like chapter 15.

And this will be your last
journal entry, worth 25 points.

Together number 15 and 17
will be 50 points.

And that's the end of that.

Again, that's for those students
that have not begun their journals.

Those who have already
done them, submit those.

So then the next thing I'm
gonna show this link, 'cause there,

these are hidden links here.

This, the next one your gonna have after
chapter 17, is managing your mental

and physical health.

All the activities are gonna be listed.

It, it, it's the same thing.

There's, there's nothing that I changed
or made too different.

And so again, you've got April 28th.

If you notice, the last, uh, unit activity,
everything's due on the 21st.

You've got 7 days to turn
everything for chapter 16.

And the activities are light,
they're not heavy.

So it just means you just, maybe,
maybe two hours tops.

depending how much
interruptions you have, uh.

It shouldn't take you very long
to do those activities.

Okay?

And again, the next and
final chapter for the course,

is going to be chapter 18, oh, sorry,

chapter 18, which is managing
your money, and same thing, guys,

next due date May 5th before midnight.

And this one has a self-change
project to that.

Okay?

So, don't worry.

Like, for example, chapter 17, uh,
I think that, chapter 16, sorry,

there's your learning profile in there.

So all of the major assignments,
they're gonna be, they're

they're gonna, they're gonna
fit into each unit plan.

So that's the next major assignment,
the learning profile paper.

Uh, that's like worth
100 points and all that.

That's gonna be in chapter 16.

And, in, uh, chapter 18, will be
the self-change project.

And then, uh, chapter, uh, 15
will be the FOCUS 2.

So all activities counting towards
attendance and, and presen,

uh, attendance and, uh, participation

and, uh, any major assignments they're
all gonna be inside one of those chapters.

Okay, so, once you read it, you go through
it, you know, you complete everything,

you not only completed toward
your attendance and participation,

you've already completed towards
the major assignments, okay?

So, I didn't want to separate a lot of
that out, I just wanted to

build it into each of these units.

Okay?

So again, you will no longer see this once
the date has passed, it will close off.

Close off.

Close off.

Each time the date passes.

Okay?

Now, the next thing that I,
because I'm still working on this,

by the time you see this video,
they'll be ready to go.

Um, you see your co-curricular assignment,
a lot of you have

been really, um, calling me and
saying "I'm worried about this,"

you know, "what happened?"

Of course, the campus closed, and
now we are on complete lockdown

from the campus until the 13th of April.

So, everything has been cancelled,
even then, even if it were to reopen

uh, we wouldn't go back to the classroom,
we're gonna continue the rest

of the semester uh, online.

So, you know, we're not going to see each
other anymore in the class, okay?

Uh, and, in terms of the campuses
being open, it will be til April 13th and

that might still be limited.

And it may not open on the 13th, depending
on all this, uh, stuff that's going on.

Okay, so, all what ACC, ACC, excuse me,
has done is cancelled everything

for the rest of the semester.

So, for those of you who did have a chance
but you just haven't written it out

write it and submit it.

You have, you know, get that over with.

And remember you've got until May 5th.

But, I would just go ahead and knock it
out if you can, get credit for that.

For the rest of you that
didn't get a chance,

and I get it because you've gotta work

and you just didn't have the time, etc.,

you can choose one of these, uh,
one of these things here,

choices here, click on the website,

In an ideal situation, you would be
attending those events because

all of these offices sponsor
on campus events.

But unfortunately, uh, you know, the situation.

So, the next thing that I'm here,
I'm gonna open up again,

you're gonna see is, extra credit.

My computer is getting super hot.

Whenever your video is,
uh, it gets super hot.

So be careful on that too.

Make sure that your laptop is kept cool
because that fan will just

working overtime.

So, you have extra credit.

Some of you have been asking about that.

Again, all extra credit, just like
in the syllabus, is due May 5th.

I did not change the due dates
on assignments.

If you kind of look at it closely, you'll
see they still follow the syllabus, okay?

So extra credit and the uh,
co-curricular, they're due on the 5th.

So extra credit, I gave you some choices,
some little activities to do.

Just choose one, um,
and it's worth 10 points.

Okay?

And so, again, again
you've got your choices.

you may click on here.

You see the due date, the points.

You can write the submission,
or you can attach it.

choose one of the videos to briefly
summarize, a half-page reflection

that includes the main points
in the video and etc., etc.

So, you know, again, read through all
of this choose the one that you,

you find most interesting.

We will have a final exam.

Uh, that will be down in here.

But I haven't, I've gotta work on that one.

And uh, it's gonna be, of course,
something you submit online, okay?

It's not gonna be, it's gonna be
different from the midterm.

So, uh, don't worry too much about that.

Be more concerned about
meeting the deadlines

and turning everything in.

Again, if you know you're, uh, running
the risk of failing the course,

you might have the opportunity
to turn things around.

But, the last day to drop I believe
is April 27th; I'm not too sure.

But anyway, you want to check
with your adviser on that.

out or confuse you by any means,

What I want to point out is this
shows you the value of each,

now, when, I'm not counting this,
so please uh, I don't really want,

you to get too confused on this,

But you probably have an
idea what I'm talking about.

But, now that I've added

I've had to re-put the assign—

So, just know that we are still operating
on the same grading system and so forth.

don't think it's not worth anything,
again you need to do that activity

to count towards your attendance
and participation grade.

Just know that if you do
everything, you will get

the full credit for attendance
and participation.
