Train Your Cat to Let You Sleep

  • 0:00 - 0:03
  • 0:03 - 0:06
    Jackson, I haven't
    slept in three days.
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    My cat keeps me
    up all night long.
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    I'm gonna kill her.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
No, I'm not gonna kill her,
but Jackson, you gotta tell me.
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    I'm gonna kill myself here.
  • 0:12 - 0:15
Tell me, how do I sleep
    through the night?
  • 0:15 - 0:17
And I say, oh, that one?
  • 0:17 - 0:18
    That's easy.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    So let me ask you
    something, people.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    You ready to get cat-ified?
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    Let's go!
  • 0:24 - 0:30
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    As you have noticed
    I'm sure, this
  • 0:32 - 0:33
is not exactly the cat cave.
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    It is a cave.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
It's a little echoey in here.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
But no, I am in a hotel room
    in San Diego, California,
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    where we are wrapping
    up filming the season
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    of "My Cat from
    Hell" season five,
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    premiering-- coming
    up in the spring.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    Do stay tuned because
    you'll find out
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    everything you have to know
about the premier of "My Cat
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    from Hell" here, on
    the Cat Daddy channel.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    Just, you know, stay tuned.
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    So today we're
    talking about what?
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    Your cat allowing you to
    sleep through the night.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    Now, the last
    episode I was talking
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    about the concept of
    circadian rhythms,
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    a cat's 24 hour clock,
    and how naturally it
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    wants to get them
    up at dusk and dawn.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    We can help guide
    their circadian rhythm.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
We can reset their body clocks.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    But there's a couple of
    really important things.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
Now when last we met I
    also gave you homework,
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    and that homework
    was about making sure
  • 1:21 - 1:25
    that you established a daily
    rhythm, that you establish
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    rituals that happen
    throughout the day that
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    helps keep their body going.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
And the one thing that is
    most important to what we're
  • 1:31 - 1:35
going to do right now is
    they're feeding schedule.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    Remember something,
    if you allow your cats
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    to graze all day
    long, if you allow
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    them to eat whenever
    they want to eat,
  • 1:41 - 1:45
then not only do you not
    have a chance of affecting
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    their behavior
    even a little bit,
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    but you're not
    allowing their body
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    to process food in
    the natural way.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    They're constantly in
    this arc of digestion.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    And we don't want that
    because then their energy
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    is totally unpredictable to us.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    Here's what I would
    ask you to do.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
If you free feed, make it stop.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    The next step is, you
    bring in meal time.
  • 2:05 - 2:10
Real big change in a cat's life
is not met with nice things.
  • 2:10 - 2:14
And you do not want to
    encourage bad behavior,
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    and by making rapid changes
like that, you kind of are.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    We'll keep the dry food
out, but then every day you
  • 2:19 - 2:21
just put less and less in there.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
And by the end of that first
    week that, there is food
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    down there, they don't feel
    like they're missing anything.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    But by an hour after
    you leave for work,
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    they've polished it off and
now they're waiting for a meal.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
Now here's the rule of thumb.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
I would like to see no
    longer than between six
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    and eight hours you
    can make it happen.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    So you're feeding
    three meals a day
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    and then your cat's
    energy is coming up
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    to meet those meal times.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    And I guarantee you,
    within a week or two
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    of instituting this meal
    time, your cat's energy
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    will come up to
    meet your schedules.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    Your second step
    is to try to get
  • 2:52 - 2:54
them to go to sleep when you do.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    Let's say your bed
    time is 11 o'clock.
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    OK.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
So by 9:30 you should be
    feeding your last meal.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    But you don't want to
    do that in a vacuum.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
In the past-- you know me-- we
    have been talking about hunt,
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    catch, kill, eat.
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    Right?
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    And so that means playtime.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    That means you have a
    really nice, chunky play
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    time right before
    that last meal.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    You bring them to a
    boil during play time.
  • 3:15 - 3:16
You get them just pooped out.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    Then you let them come
    down for a second.
  • 3:18 - 3:22
    Again, all cats have the
    second wind, the third wind.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    Cats are built for
    speed, not for distance.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
So bring them to a boil,
    let them come down.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    Bring them to a
    boil, now it's going
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    to take less time for
    them to get worn out.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    Now less time, now
    they're tired, right?
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    When they pooped out, boom.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    Now, hunt, catch, kill, eat.
  • 3:36 - 3:38
Feed their last meal of the day.
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    What comes after eat?
  • 3:39 - 3:40
    Groom.
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    Yeah, baby.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    We're all about getting
    clean right now.
  • 3:43 - 3:44
    And then sleep.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
And then you go to sleep.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    Now we're getting
    to the hard part.
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    Because now you've got
    to do some serious work.
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    So now it's 3 o'clock
    in the morning,
  • 3:54 - 3:55
and your cat is waking you up.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
But you know, I gave you
    a meal at 11 o'clock.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
I wore you down at 9:30.
  • 4:00 - 4:04
You should be down for the
count right now, but you're not.
  • 4:04 - 4:07
    Now here's the tough part.
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    I mean, I'm laughing
    only because I
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    know how ridiculously
    hard this is.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
What you've got to do at
    3 o'clock in the morning,
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    your cat's driving you crazy.
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    You ignore them.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    You ignore them completely.
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    Completely.
  • 4:24 - 4:28
    And you definitely don't get
    up, feed them, walk around,
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    go to the bathroom,
    come back again.
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    You don't play with them.
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    Nothing.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    You ignore them completely.
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    Because that is payoff.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    Negative attention, positive
    attention, any attention
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    whatsoever is still attention.
  • 4:40 - 4:43
    You have to
    extinguish the payoff.
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    If you tell them
    night after night
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    after night that nothing's
    going to happen when they
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    do that certain behavior,
    that behavior will stop.
  • 4:51 - 4:54
    So people, what that means
is that for about 10 days
  • 4:54 - 4:59
to two weeks, it may be
    really, really long nights.
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    Don't kill me.
  • 5:00 - 5:04
Now, if it goes past 13 nights?
  • 5:04 - 5:05
    Whatever, come find me.
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    Because I'm telling
    you, it won't happen.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    In conclusion, let's
    give you some homework.
  • 5:10 - 5:11
Take a look at that blackboard.
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    Now, write it down here.
  • 5:13 - 5:15
    First thing you do
    is change your cat
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    from free-feeders
    to meal-feeders.
  • 5:17 - 5:18
    Big change.
  • 5:18 - 5:21
Next thing you do is you feed
    in conjunction with play.
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    Third thing, remember
    that your cat's energy
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    moves with your energy.
  • 5:26 - 5:29
    So remember that you're trying
    to merge the two together.
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    Your energy, your cat's energy,
    your clock, your cat's clock,
  • 5:32 - 5:33
    merge them together.
  • 5:33 - 5:36
    Then don't forget, the last
meal of the day an hour
  • 5:36 - 5:37
and a half before you go to bed.
  • 5:37 - 5:40
    You're going to hunt, catch,
    kill, eat, let them groom
  • 5:40 - 5:42
and sleep until you go to bed.
  • 5:42 - 5:42
    Boom.
  • 5:42 - 5:44
Then we get through the night.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
And then the last step, folks--
    the last, most important step
  • 5:46 - 5:47
    is, ignore them.
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    You guys can do this.
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    You can affect your
    cat's body clock,
  • 5:51 - 5:53
and that's how you do it.
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    That's how you sleep
    through the night.
  • 5:55 - 5:56
    Boom.
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    Consider yourself cat-ified.
  • 5:58 - 5:58
    Alright.
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    Let's wrap this up.
  • 5:59 - 6:03
    Hey folks, if you're trying
to find me, I'm easily found.
  • 6:03 - 6:06
    Take a look at Facebook
    and Instagram and Twitter
  • 6:06 - 6:08
    and YouTube and Google+.
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    And don't forget,
    speaking of Google+,
  • 6:09 - 6:13
    every month we do Live
    from the Cat Cave.
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    And that is a live
    Google Hangout.
  • 6:15 - 6:18
This month I'm just going to be
    doing live question and answer.
  • 6:18 - 6:19
That will be a lot of fun.
  • 6:19 - 6:22
    In the meantime, folks,
    take care of yourself.
  • 6:22 - 6:24
    Take care of your cats.
  • 6:24 - 6:28
    And all light, all
    love, all mojo to you.
  • 6:28 - 6:29
THEME SONG: You're a bad cat.
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    I'm not a bad cat.
  • 6:31 - 6:32
    You're a bad cat.
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    I'm not a bad cat.
  • 6:34 - 6:35
    You're a bad cat.
  • 6:35 - 6:37
    I'm just misunderstood.
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    Meow.
  • 6:39 - 6:41
