Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
-
0:01 - 0:10[Music]
-
0:10 - 0:107
-
0:10 - 0:14>> And people will say to us after eight weeks
in our Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Clinic -
0:14 - 0:17at the University of Massachusetts
Medical Center that they felt -
0:17 - 0:20like they got their life back in some way.
-
0:20 - 0:25And these are people with cancer of various
kinds, heart disease, chronic pain conditions, -
0:26 - 0:28people who've in some sense
not gotten satisfaction -
0:28 - 0:31from the mainstream health care system.
-
0:31 - 0:36And where the invitation in MBSR,
mindfulness based stress reduction is -
0:36 - 0:41to actually do something for yourself that
no one else on the planet can do for you. -
0:42 - 0:44And it really involves this quality
-
0:44 - 0:48of cultivating what I would call
affectionate attention or mindfulness, -
0:49 - 0:55and they're specialized ways that you
can use to help facilitate that process. -
0:55 - 0:58And so people who understand
about meditation or have heard -
0:58 - 1:01of meditation often think, oh,
yeah, it's about breathing. -
1:02 - 1:05Oh, yeah, it's about breathing for instance.
-
1:05 - 1:10And a lot of our patients when they're finished
with the MBSR, and you ask them, "Well, -
1:10 - 1:11what did you get out of the program?"
-
1:11 - 1:13A lot of them will say the breathing.
-
1:13 - 1:14And I say, "Wait a minute.
-
1:14 - 1:17You were breathing before
you took the MBSR program. -
1:17 - 1:20You're going to be breathing
for a long time after that. -
1:20 - 1:22What are you talking about with the breathing?"
-
1:22 - 1:25So they're not really talking
about the breathing or breathing. -
1:25 - 1:29What they're talking about
is my intimate relationship -
1:29 - 1:31with my breath that I didn't have before.
-
1:31 - 1:35And that is called awareness,
pure and simple or mindfulness. -
1:35 - 1:40But when you pay attention to the
breath, to the rising of the breath -
1:41 - 1:44on the inhalation, and the
sensations in the body. -
1:44 - 1:48We're not talking about the thinking about
the breath, but just the sensation of the wave -
1:48 - 1:50of the breath coming in, and then peaks,
-
1:51 - 1:54and we can feel that peak not
breathing in, not breathing out. -
1:55 - 2:00The wave of the breath leaving the body,
and then the trough, and then the next wave. -
2:00 - 2:03And when we ride on those waves, like
surfing on the waves of the breath, -
2:03 - 2:07first of all, it naturally calms us down.
-
2:07 - 2:09It naturally slows us down.
-
2:09 - 2:15It naturally centers the focus of our awareness
in the present moment, and in the body. -
2:15 - 2:20So when people talk about the breathing,
what they mean is mindfulness of breathing.
