In on a secret? That's dramatic irony - Christopher Warner
-
0:15 - 0:19What do horror movies and comedies have in common?
-
0:19 - 0:21The two genres might seem totally different,
-
0:21 - 0:23but the reason they're both so popular
-
0:23 - 0:25is perhaps because what they have in common:
-
0:25 - 0:27their use of dramatic irony.
-
0:27 - 0:29First, let's clarify.
-
0:29 - 0:31There are three types of irony out there.
-
0:31 - 0:34Situational irony is when you expect one thing,
-
0:34 - 0:35but get the opposite.
-
0:35 - 0:38Verbal irony is when someone says something,
-
0:38 - 0:39but truly means the opposite.
-
0:39 - 0:41Dramatic irony, though,
-
0:41 - 0:43is what we will be looking at right now.
-
0:43 - 0:44Dramatic irony is when the audience
-
0:44 - 0:46seems to know more about an event,
-
0:46 - 0:48a situation,
-
0:48 - 0:49or a conversation
-
0:49 - 0:50than the characters in the movie,
-
0:50 - 0:51on the show,
-
0:51 - 0:53or in the book do.
-
0:53 - 0:55The audience is in on a secret
-
0:55 - 0:56that the characters have missed.
-
0:56 - 0:58This is a great story-telling device
-
0:58 - 1:01that creates tremendous emotion within that text.
-
1:01 - 1:03Think about it for a moment.
-
1:03 - 1:05How does it feel when, in a horror film,
-
1:05 - 1:07you know that the scary villain is hiding
-
1:07 - 1:09behind that door in the darkened room.
-
1:09 - 1:11The music becomes eerie,
-
1:11 - 1:14the lighting creates complete shadows,
-
1:14 - 1:16this has to be bad for the hero!
-
1:16 - 1:19Of course, though, that hero must enter the room
-
1:19 - 1:20to find the villain.
-
1:20 - 1:23You feel tremendous tension and the suspense
-
1:23 - 1:26of knowing that someone will jump out and be scary,
-
1:26 - 1:29but you just don't know when.
-
1:29 - 1:32That tension is dramatic irony:
-
1:32 - 1:35you know something more than the characters in the film.
-
1:35 - 1:37Now, take the typical comedy.
-
1:37 - 1:41There will probably be some type of "misunderstanding".
-
1:41 - 1:43Again, we know more of what is going on
-
1:43 - 1:44than the characters do.
-
1:44 - 1:46Picture two characters making a plan
-
1:46 - 1:48for a birthday surprise for their roommate
-
1:48 - 1:49while that roommate overhears
-
1:49 - 1:52the entire conversation from the hallway.
-
1:52 - 1:55From there, confusion and misunderstanding occur,
-
1:55 - 1:57and the tension builds.
-
1:57 - 1:59This isn't the same tension as the horror film
-
1:59 - 2:01since it is probably pretty funny
-
2:01 - 2:04as the character tries to figure out the whos and the whats,
-
2:04 - 2:06but it serves as a great example
-
2:06 - 2:09of the tension and suspense of dramatic irony.
-
2:09 - 2:12This tension or suspense in both genres
-
2:12 - 2:14drives the story and keeps the plot progressing.
-
2:14 - 2:17The audience wants, no, needs,
-
2:17 - 2:20to see the tension of the dramatic irony broken
-
2:20 - 2:23either by the scary person jumping out of the shadows
-
2:23 - 2:26or by someone finally revealing someone's true identity
-
2:26 - 2:28and clearing up the confusion.
-
2:28 - 2:31So, when you feel like you are in on a secret,
-
2:31 - 2:33that is dramatic irony,
-
2:33 - 2:36a hallmark of all the great writers,
-
2:36 - 2:38from Shakespeare to Hitchcock.

You're in a movie theater, watching the new horror flick. The audience knows something that the main character does not. The audience sees the character's actions are not in his best interest. What's that feeling -- the one that makes you want to shout at the screen? Christopher Warner identifies this storytelling device as dramatic irony.
