Wellness Central: Helping Others

  • 0:01 - 0:05
    >> Well, I would like to think that I've helped
people who have had their own share of anxiety.
  • 0:05 - 0:08
I volunteer at the David Lambert
    Community Center for the Homeless.
  • 0:09 - 0:13
And we see a lot of people who come in
there who have anxiety or are depressed.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    >> Well, see I was Assistant Drug Counselor.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
I've dealt with some serious situations
where I had to do things to help people.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    >> So, as a tutor, I help
    students very frequently.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
And a lot of students when they come
in, sometimes they know they need help
  • 0:28 - 0:33
    but they don't know specifically
    how you can help them.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    >> I'm in the, the nursing program, right now.
  • 0:35 - 0:39
And so, and we're doing our, our
    mental health rotation, right now.
  • 0:39 - 0:44
And so, what I'm learning about, about
helping people deal with stress and anxiety.
  • 0:44 - 0:52
And basically, being available to listen to
somebody is the biggest thing you can do.
  • 0:52 - 0:59
    >> I seek out a close friend and I have to say
that if we don't build those relationships,
  • 1:00 - 1:02
then those close friends aren't there
to help us through time of need.
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    So, it's kind of a, a two-way street.
  • 1:07 - 1:11
    >> Generally, anytime someone's available to
talk with me, they help me in a time of stress.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    So, friends have helped me.
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    Siblings have helped me.
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    Parents have helped me.
  • 1:16 - 1:17
People that I just meet walking down the street
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    that are willing to talk,
    they've helped me, too.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
Just as long as I have someone to talk with.
  • 1:21 - 1:27
    >> He said, ''Mike, do you
know who you are?'' I said,
  • 1:27 - 1:33
''Yeah.'' ''Do you know what you do?'' I said,
''Yeah.'' He says, ''So, why are you worrying
  • 1:33 - 1:40
    about somebody's false report?'' People
gossip and say things all the time.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
You know. If you allow yourself
to be caught up in that,
  • 1:44 - 1:46
you won't be fulfilling what you need to do.
  • 1:48 - 1:52
    >> So, it's sometimes difficult
    to help others because sometimes,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
they don't know how you can help them.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
But what happens, very frequently, is
they don't know that they need help.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    >> Sometimes it's difficult to help others
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    because you don't know exactly
    where they're coming from.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    >> It can be difficult to help others
because you have enough problems yourself.
  • 2:11 - 2:16
    >> You could be the first to help
someone find the resources they need.
  • 2:17 - 2:22
The prospect of seeking out resources can be
stressful and frustrating for someone in need
  • 2:22 - 2:24
and is a barrier to getting help.
  • 2:25 - 2:30
You can help remove that barrier by doing
the research and helping them connect.
  • 2:31 - 2:34
Crisis Text could be a good start.
  • 2:35 - 2:36
    >> I just refer them to this card.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
I just, I keep it with me
just in case someone needs it.
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    It's because I'm not professional.
  • 2:44 - 2:44
    These people are.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    >> It's definitely important to help others.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    >> A long term cause of happiness
    in us is helping others.
  • 2:51 - 2:57
So, it is sort of a selfish
thing, as well, but in a good way.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    Because you're helping them.
  • 2:59 - 3:00
They're getting the benefit of your help.
  • 3:01 - 3:02
    It's a win-win.
  • 3:03 - 3:05
