Can Mental illness PHYSICALLY affect you?

  • 0:04 - 0:06
    Hey everyone. Happy Thursday.
  • 0:06 - 0:08
Now today I'm going to just answer a question.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
I was gonna do coffee and a chat, but it is later in the day
  • 0:10 - 0:15
and I don't know if you are like me, but I can't drink coffee that late, 'cause then I can't sleep.
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    It gives me the jitters.
  • 0:16 - 0:20
So today's question is actually something that I'm surprised I haven't talked about before,
  • 0:20 - 0:22
so we're gonna talk about it.
  • 0:22 - 0:28
And the question is "Hey Kati. Can mental illness/illnesses physically affect you?"
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    Good question.
  • 0:30 - 0:34
"I don't mean behavior. I mean physical illness and pain.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
More specifically, I've been diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorder.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
I wake up almost every morning feeling physically ill.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
(sick heavy head)" -they say in parentheses-
  • 0:43 - 0:47
"but more than that, it's really hard to compare it to any other feeling.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
I'm pretty sure it's not an anxious stomach, but it's only when I wake up,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
even when I've had a really good night sleep.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
I stay off of school because of it and it's hard to explain it to my dad so I just refuse to go."
  • 0:57 - 1:01
And the truth of it is that this is very very common.
  • 1:01 - 1:07
Yes, it is completely normal to physically feel what's going on with us mentally.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
And I'm sure you've heard people talk about how powerful the human mind is,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
and how powerful it can be.
  • 1:12 - 1:16
I mean I can get anxious and make my stomach upset like finger snap if I want to.
  • 1:16 - 1:21
So we know that it is linked, and those are actually called somatic symptoms.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
Not to be confused with somatic disorder and all of those different things,
  • 1:24 - 1:29
but somatic symptoms are the physical manifestation of mental illness,
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    and that is very common.
  • 1:31 - 1:36
Some of the most common ones that people talk about are stomachaches, headaches, heavy heads
  • 1:36 - 1:38
kinda like what she talked about. Like a sick, heavy head.
  • 1:38 - 1:43
Those are very common, and that is why we usually end up,
  • 1:43 - 1:45
if we've never been diagnosed, we haven't gotten treatment,
  • 1:45 - 1:48
a lot of people end up in their GP or regular doctor
  • 1:48 - 1:50
or primary care doctor's office first.
  • 1:50 - 1:55
Because we don't feel well. We think we're sick, but we don't have like green snot
  • 1:55 - 1:57
or other things that tell us we're sick or a fever.
  • 1:57 - 2:01
But we just don't feel well and it keeps going on and persisting
  • 2:01 - 2:05
so we go to our doctor and we say "What gives? Why do I feel so sick?"
  • 2:05 - 2:10
And then they usually refer us to a therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, something like that.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
So if you are out there and you are feeling achy-
  • 2:13 - 2:16
That's the most common symptom by the way that I've heard,
  • 2:16 - 2:19
is that people who are depressed or anxious have like body aches
  • 2:19 - 2:22
like ugh kinda like when you're sick and you ache.
  • 2:22 - 2:26
We feel that way and so if you have any symptoms like that
  • 2:26 - 2:29
and you've maybe even gone to the doctor and they checked you out
  • 2:29 - 2:33
and they're like "Nothing's wrong but you can take these antibiotics if you want".
  • 2:33 - 2:40
This is somethin to think about and consider, because our bodies work as a whole. Right?
  • 2:40 - 2:42
Healthy mind, healthy body. That is our motto.
  • 2:42 - 2:46
And that is because they're so intrinsically linked.
  • 2:46 - 2:49
If one is off, the other's off. If the other one's off, the other one's off.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
So you can see that if something is wrong in our brain
  • 2:52 - 2:56
If we are feeling really down and out, that body aches might be common.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
We might wanna sleep a lot.
  • 2:58 - 3:01
A lot of symptoms that we could think of and associate with illness.
  • 3:01 - 3:06
So get checked out by your doctor first because we all know it could be sickness,
  • 3:06 - 3:09
but if it's been going on and you've gotten checked out and everything is fine.
  • 3:09 - 3:13
Ask them for a referral to see a therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist, someone,
  • 3:13 - 3:16
some mental health professional, so that you can get properly diagnosed
  • 3:16 - 3:18
and get the help that you want.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
And if you have not hopped over to the Shorty awards.
  • 3:21 - 3:22
I'm gonna put the link in the description.
  • 3:22 - 3:30
Mental health is finally being recognized, and we as a community are finally on the board!
  • 3:30 - 3:35
And so you can vote once a day, each day. Once a day until February 18th.
  • 3:35 - 3:39
And if you put it on your Twitter or Facebook, we get an extra point like another vote
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    that counts twice. So exciting!
  • 3:41 - 3:44
So if you could share the link. Share it on your Twitter or Facebook.
  • 3:44 - 3:51
We could really rally the masses and mental health could get an award. That's so exciting.
  • 3:51 - 3:55
I used to like beg and plead to try to get us involved in this stuff
  • 3:55 - 3:59
and I never heard from anybody. And now we're on it so please vote if you haven't.
  • 3:59 - 4:00
    Link in the description.
  • 4:00 - 4:05
Also I wanna give a whole-hearted thank you to all of my patreon patrons.
  • 4:05 - 4:09
I usually put their names at the end of a Monday video but I had a collab this Monday
  • 4:09 - 4:11
so everything was off so thank you so much.
  • 4:11 - 4:15
Here are the people who give and if you are interested in helping the kinion community
  • 4:15 - 4:17
helping us reach more people and supporting this channel,
  • 4:17 - 4:19
I'll put the link in the description for that as well.
  • 4:19 - 4:29
I love you all and I will see you on Monday. Bye!
  • 4:29 - 4:41
I think that's about the only dance I know.
