Secrets of The Psychics (Part 3 of 6)

  • 0:00 - 0:05
(narrator) If he does his job well
    they want to be fooled.
  • 0:05 - 0:11
    (tutor) Uh, Sharla, could
    you pass that back? Wendy?
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    (narrator) From the astrology test
    each student was given a
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    detailed horoscope.
  • 0:17 - 0:18
    (tutor) Robin, could you
    pass that over.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
(narrator) They were told it was
    drawn up by a professional
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    based on information they
    had supplied about when
  • 0:22 - 0:31
    and where they were born.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    Actually, these horoscopes
    were not quite what they
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    appeared to be.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
I'd like you to share something
with me if you'd be so kind,
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    just with a show
    of hands...
  • 0:39 - 0:42
(narrator) I asked the students to grade
    them for accuracy on a scale of one to five;
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    five being the most accurate.
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    Uh, how many gave it
    a one?
  • 0:46 - 0:57
Let's see a show of hands.
    Two, three, four and five.
  • 0:57 - 0:57
    Okay.
  • 0:57 - 1:01
    So we scored pretty highly
    with this, then.
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    Let's do a little experiment.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    You've got your horoscopes right
    in front of you.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
Take them in your hand like this
    and hand them
  • 1:06 - 1:09
over your shoulder to the person
    behind you,
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    okay everybody?
  • 1:10 - 1:12
And the guy at the end down
there you'll have to come up
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    to the front because these
    people in
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    the front don't have one
    now.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    Okay?
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    Everybody change them
    around?
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    Everybody's got one.
  • 1:19 - 1:24
    Open up somebody else's
horoscope and read it carefully, please.
  • 1:32 - 1:32
(offscreen voice) This is the same thing.
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    Oh, it does!
  • 1:33 - 1:35
This is the same as mine says!
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    What a surprise.
  • 1:37 - 1:44
(narrator) They had all received the same
    horoscope.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    The personality descriptions
    were generally true of everyone,
  • 1:47 - 1:52
like recently you have had to recover from a disappointment.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    Some of them seem specific
    because they were so personal.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
    Your sexual adjustment has
    presented some problems for
    you.
  • 2:00 - 2:05
    And there were others that
anyone might hope would be true.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    You have a great deal
    of unused capacity.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
    People like to believe
    certain things are true,
  • 2:12 - 2:15
and they like to fall for
    very specific, absolutely,
  • 2:15 - 2:19
    enormously accurate horoscopes,
    right?
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    Of course they are.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    Did you have a question?
    Yes, I have a question.
  • 2:23 - 2:28
(offscreen voice) So why do people persist
    in ascribing to these systems?
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    That's the big question,
    of course,
  • 2:30 - 2:34
    and psychologically that is
    the most interesting question.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    I think that people are
    trying to get some control
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    over their lives.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    By knowing more about
    themselves of course they
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    get control over their lives,
    but that's what we're doing,
  • 2:42 - 2:46
all of us, each and every day of
    our lives, whether it's financial,
  • 2:46 - 2:49
whether it's emotional, whether it's a love interest,
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    whether it's health,
  • 2:50 - 2:52
we're trying to get control of
    our lives,
  • 2:52 - 2:56
    we're looking for power and
    astrology offers you apparently
  • 2:56 - 2:58
a very old and a very easy
    formula
  • 2:58 - 3:01
whereby you can do that sort of
    thing.
  • 3:01 - 3:06
    What you've presented me
    today is evidence that
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    this can be misused or
    abused,
  • 3:08 - 3:10
but you have not convinced me
that there is nothing to this.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    Oh no, no, I didn't
    intend to do that.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
Okay, and I feel that your
    exercise today was kind of
  • 3:15 - 3:18
    cynical and one-sided and
somehow it is wise to be
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    unbelieving of this sort of
    thing.
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    Well, I can't prove it doesn't
    work.
  • 3:22 - 3:23
I can never prove it doesn't
    work.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
And I've seen a lot of times
    where intellectuals have had,
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    have wanted to disprove mystical
    things because since it
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    didn't fit into their framework
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    of beliefs ...
    they wouldn't allow it.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
But I can't prove to you
    that Santa Claus doesn't exist.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    I really can't.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    I can't disprove anything.
  • 3:39 - 3:40
    I can't prove a negative,
but I can show you that
  • 3:40 - 3:44
it's not very likely to be
    true.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
That's the best I can do.
  • 3:52 - 3:56
    (narrator) Needless to say, my
    message isn't always popular.
  • 3:56 - 4:01
My friend Ray Hyman is a
psychologist and he has an idea
    why.
  • 4:01 - 4:03
We seem to be taken, as
    we're taking something
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    away and not giving
    something in return,
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    and these people want something,
    they're looking
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    for something and I think
    we have to understand what
  • 4:09 - 4:12
    is it they're searching
    for and what they're seeking.
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    (narrator) Ray has an insider's
    perspective on these questions.
  • 4:15 - 4:18
    He once worked as a
    professional palm reader.
  • 4:18 - 4:21
On a recent visit to Florida he
    allowed me to
  • 4:21 - 4:26
    observe while he
    gave readings to two volunteers.
  • 4:26 - 4:28
Now, I want to look at a
    few other things before we
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    go very far.
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    I looked at your thumb,
    it's the most important.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    Ray started reading palms
    to help put himself
  • 4:33 - 4:34
    through college.
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    There's a little narrowing
    of the second joint here.
  • 4:36 - 4:40
    That, that's tact,
    that's just tactfulness.
  • 4:40 - 4:43
At the time he was convinced
    there was nothing to it.
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    Ah, this is the
    spiritual mental.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
I had no belief that it
    would work, but to be
  • 4:47 - 4:50
    convincing I did read the
books and I did study the
  • 4:50 - 4:55
lines and told it as it's
supposed to be told and to
  • 4:55 - 4:58
my surprise it worked, and then
    it became a very
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    rapid believing in palm reading.
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    There's a break in your
    lifeline;
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    this is your lifeline right
    here,
  • 5:04 - 5:08
so you've had some physical problems and you still may
    have some problems here,
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    some medical problems
    of some sort.
  • 5:10 - 5:13
    He was right about that;
    that I have had some
  • 5:13 - 5:15
    health problems.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    Is there anything
    there about my mother?
  • 5:17 - 5:21
    About your mother - um,
    the one thing that,
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    the thing that's clear is
    that, uh, right from the
  • 5:24 - 5:27
    beginning, uh, you didn't
want to be dominated by her.
  • 5:27 - 5:29
You wanted to make up your
    own mind about what your
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    life was going to
    be like and so on.
  • 5:31 - 5:34
I have been very headstrong when
    it comes to my mother,
  • 5:34 - 5:37
and she has kind of tried to
    dominate me sometimes and I've
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    rebelled against it.
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    At the same time you
    wanted to be,
  • 5:41 - 5:43
you wanted to be on your own
    terms and stuff like that.
  • 5:43 - 5:46
    He was pretty right on
the money with a lot of things.
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    Maybe he's got some part
    to himself that others are
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    not in touch with and
    he knows these things.
  • 5:52 - 5:53
    ....concerned about the
    relationship between your
  • 5:53 - 5:54
    mother and yourself.
  • 5:54 - 5:58
(narrator) As a palm reader Ray was
    quite successful,
  • 5:58 - 6:00
then a college friend bet him
that he would do just as
  • 6:00 - 6:03
    well if he told his
    subjects the opposite of
  • 6:03 - 6:05
what he read in their palms.
  • 6:05 - 6:08
He decided to give it a try.
  • 6:08 - 6:12
And I did this on my first client and she didn't say a
    word;
  • 6:12 - 6:14
she had no reaction at all which
    is very spooky to me
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    because I'm used to feedback.
  • 6:16 - 6:20
I thought it was because I
    bombed, but it turned out
  • 6:20 - 6:23
    because she was so stunned
    I was so accurate.
  • 6:23 - 6:26
    And this was really a
shock to me because I had
  • 6:26 - 6:28
    done everything wrong,
so I did the next client
  • 6:28 - 6:29
    wrong and then I realized
    it doesn't make a
  • 6:29 - 6:33
    difference what you tell
    them it's more what you
  • 6:33 - 6:38
    convince them how good you
are and what you get them to believe.
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    (narrator) As a professional psychologist,
  • 6:40 - 6:43
Ray is very much aware of the
    role that careful observation
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    can play in a reading.
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    You're living in a strange
    world.
  • 6:47 - 6:51
You'd be better if you're living
    maybe 50,
  • 6:51 - 6:53
40 years ago in some ways.
  • 6:53 - 6:56
    I've always said that, I
    should've been born a long
    time ago.
  • 6:56 - 7:00
    This present world is, is,
    presents problems for you
  • 7:00 - 7:02
    and you're not
    too happy with it.
  • 7:02 - 7:03
    You'd be much better...
  • 7:03 - 7:05
    From the way she was
dressed and so on, I could
  • 7:05 - 7:08
say that she'd rather be living
    in an earlier time than today;
  • 7:08 - 7:10
in fact she was dressed for an
    earlier time anyway.
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    There's a change.
  • 7:12 - 7:13
    There's been uh, there for
    a while looked like you
  • 7:13 - 7:17
    had two jobs or two
    careers, I'm not sure,
  • 7:17 - 7:19
and, uh, very recently you have
    switched.
  • 7:19 - 7:22
In fact there's been a major
    career change.
  • 7:22 - 7:25
I've been in the same career for
    six years.
  • 7:25 - 7:28
    Next year I'm thinking about
    changing careers,
  • 7:28 - 7:31
but I haven't done it yet so he
    could just be a
  • 7:31 - 7:34
    little off on his timing.
  • 7:34 - 7:37
If you set people up right
you can tell them most anything.
  • 7:37 - 7:38
    If they've really got a
    creative and intelligent
  • 7:38 - 7:40
mind they can make sense out
    of naught.
  • 7:40 - 7:42
How crazy it seems to be, they
    can find a way of,
  • 7:42 - 7:48
    of reinterpreting it so it
really fits them like a glove.
  • 7:48 - 7:50
    This person wants
    me to succeed.
  • 7:50 - 7:53
    I should work out
    some accommodation.
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    Well you certainly
    don't need someone to
  • 7:57 - 7:59
    deliberately fool you to
have what seems to be a
  • 7:59 - 8:00
    psychic experience.
  • 8:00 - 8:03
Your mind can create one all
    by itself.
  • 8:03 - 8:05
    Let's say you don't like
    to fly and you're worried
  • 8:05 - 8:07
about a trip you're going to
    take then suddenly
  • 8:07 - 8:08
    during the flight the
    plane suddenly, whoa,
  • 8:08 - 8:12
    drops a few thousand feet
    because of a downdraft.
  • 8:12 - 8:14
    You might very well choose
to think that you had some
  • 8:14 - 8:17
    kind of psychic intuition
    about this,
  • 8:17 - 8:19
but what you forget is that
    you've had that same queasy
  • 8:19 - 8:22
    feeling every time you've gotten
on an airplane and if it
  • 8:22 - 8:25
    doesn't fulfill itself,
    you forget about it.
  • 8:25 - 8:27
    You see, the brain is
    constantly searching for
  • 8:27 - 8:28
    relationships.
  • 8:28 - 8:31
    It's trying to work out
cause and effect so we can
  • 8:31 - 8:33
    know what to expect
    in our lives.
  • 8:33 - 8:34
    That's natural.
  • 8:34 - 8:36
The brain is very good at this
    but it does make mistakes,
  • 8:36 - 8:39
and one way to explain these
    mistakes is by some kind
  • 8:39 - 8:43
    of psychic explanation.
  • 8:47 - 8:51
    My investigations have
taken me to dozens of countries,
  • 8:51 - 8:52
but until recently one of the
    most
  • 8:52 - 8:57
    interesting wasn't open to
    scrutiny.
  • 8:59 - 9:01
    It's long been rumored that
    Russia harbors
  • 9:01 - 9:06
    psychic talent like nowhere
    else in the world.
  • 9:06 - 9:09
    The country has an
    ancient,
  • 9:09 - 9:11
    mystical tradition, and the
    government has encouraged
  • 9:11 - 9:13
    psychic research.
  • 9:13 - 9:15
    To Moscow?
    That's right.
  • 9:15 - 9:16
    Any luggage to
    check in, sir?
  • 9:16 - 9:19
    Two pieces.
  • 9:21 - 9:24
    Now that the country is
    open to visitors, I wanted
  • 9:24 - 9:28
    to check things out for
    myself.
  • 9:30 - 9:37
    I've seen the films that
came out during the Cold War.
  • 9:37 - 9:40
    Juno was a famous healer
who had Brezhnev as a client.
  • 9:49 - 9:51
    Karl Nikolaiev could
    apparently turn on lights
  • 9:51 - 9:55
with the force of his will.
